Predicting Giants, rooting Braves.
― In "Bob" There Is No East or West (WmC), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 19:58 (fourteen years ago)
Barry Zito was fantastic early on this season, going 5-0 with a 1.49 ERA through six starts, and he had an ERA under 3.50 as recently as mid-August, but the veteran left-hander went 1-8 with a 6.66 ERA in his final 11 starts and now the Giants have decided to bump him from the playoff rotation.Tim Lincecum will start Game 1, followed by Matt Cain in Game 2 and Jonathan Sanchez in Game 3. Bruce Bochy said today that he's undecided about who would get the Game 4 call, but the options don't include Zito. Instead, it'll either be rookie Madison Bumgarner or Lincecum coming back on short rest.Normally that would mean a trip to the bullpen for Zito, but with Jeremy Affeldt, Dan Runzler, and Javier Lopez the Giants aren't exactly short on left-handed relief options. In other words, the $126 million man could be left off the postseason roster entirely for the first round.

SF in 5 low scoring games
― Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago)
I'm fairly certain that SF can do it but nervous.
― A Reclaimer Hewn With (Michael White), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:18 (fourteen years ago)
Lowe vs. Timmeh is an exciting matchup. If the Braves had any teeth in its batting order, I'd be a little more confident, but they're not going to go anywhere trying to gum SF to death.
― In "Bob" There Is No East or West (WmC), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:24 (fourteen years ago)
San Francisco should take this in five.
hope they leave Zito off the rotation and put him in the bullpen.
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:32 (fourteen years ago)
Hope they leave Zito on a curb during garbage pickup.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/10/04/SP5R1FO5DT.DTL
in other words, the Barry Zito question.
The Giants need only four starters for the best-of-five series. Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez are locks. The decision comes down to Zito and Madison Bumgarner for Game 4 at Atlanta. Often, the starter left out of the rotation goes to the bullpen for long relief, but the Giants' bullpen is stuffed with quality arms.
Do they drop a Chris Ray or Dan Runzler to add a starter to the bullpen? Do they bite the bullet and drop one of the five starters? That could be risky if another starter gets shelled early, because the Giants do not have a true long man. If Zito is the odd man out of the rotation, do the Giants have the guts to leave a $126 million player off their roster?
Even though Zito struggled in Saturday's game against San Diego, he has playoff experience and pitched one of his best games of the season at Atlanta, holding the Braves to two runs in seven innings on Aug. 6. The Giants won 3-2...
― Bee OK, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 03:02 (fourteen years ago)
The long man can be Bumgarner, with Lincecum pitching on short rest. Anyway, the starter most likely to be shelled early is Zito, no?
― Daria Law (Leee), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 04:46 (fourteen years ago)
Zito would be a terrible long man. He was terrible in relief when he lost his starter's spot last year.
― funky house skeptic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 05:00 (fourteen years ago)
Zito is an average pitcher with an extremely above average salary.Don't blame Zito for Sabean's idiocy.

The amazing thing about the SF's success is that they seem to be doing it without the aid of their clueless GM/executive management.
When their three highest salaried players are left off the playoff roster, that has to be a huge hint that the GM is a complete idiot when it comes to allocating resources, right?
Zito + Rowand + Renteria = $43M in 2010, more than 1/3 of their payroll will go to bench cheerleaders in the playoffs. Good stuff.
― Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago)
Hes done a good job with the scrap heap tho - Uribe and Huff. And obviously has had success with the draft in Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, and Posey. I guess you get decent talent like that when your team is in the shitter for like 5 years in a row because of said shitty FA contracts.
― mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
I guess what I mean to be asking is: has there ever been a playoff team where the 3 highest salaried players (who are also healthy) have been left off the playoff roster? That has to be some kind of record right, esp on a bigger budget team!
― Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
Been a pretty dull round so far (unless you fetishize no-hitters over wins). Save us, Jints and Braves!

Because of the score, Lincecum's a more valuable performance than Halladay's.
As for the blown Posey call, BRING ON THE ROBOTS.

More valuable perhaps, but until Lincecum mans up and does that rinky-dink stuff in the actual WORLD SERIES, then I'm not ready to list his name among the all-time strikeout greats like Carl Erskine.

And BTW plz explain the difference, performance-wise, between giving up zero runs in a 4-0 game and zero runs in a 1-0 game because if you're saying that these guys are PITCHING TO THE SCORE then we might have to re-poll the AL Cy Young winner thread.

― Andy K, Friday, 8 October 2010 12:57 (fourteen years ago)
The Braves' eagerness to chase meant Lincecum could go out of the zone and still get strikes. Only 44 percent of his pitches were in the zone, second-lowest in a start since the All-Star break, yet Lincecum got 24 strikes on bad balls (17 swings-and-misses, three fouls, two called and two in play). Eleven of his strikeouts came on balls out of the strike zone. Most swings and misses in a gameThis seasonTim Lincecum 31 Oct 7 vs ATLBrandon Morrow 26 May 5 at CLEJosh Johnson 25 Jul 22 vs COLClay Buchholz 25 Apr 22 vs TEXLincecum forced 31 swings and misses, which is easily a career high and the most for ANY pitcher in ANY game this season. There were some called balls mixed in, so it's not nine pitches, but every strike in that inning was a whiff.

thank god they're going over a pointless play in excruciating detail, of all things
no problem though, the Giants are only playing the Braves
― Bee OK, Saturday, 9 October 2010 04:11 (fourteen years ago)
Sure, give away outs against the other teams' closer when you need three runs to win and haven't been able to score all series.
The Braves got a double to tie the game as I was writing that but the run would have scored from first anyway, there was no need to give up the out.

Amazing, in the middle innings the Braves were as dead in this series as dead can be, now the series is tied and they're heading home for two games (where they have the best record in baseball). Cons: Prof. Farnsworth is their new closer.

^r0m0^
that series was pretty great because Jose Cruz Jr won a gold glove and he singlehandedly (pun intended) blew game 2 for SF by dropping a routine can o corn flyball hit directly to him. SF had a decisive lead and that sealed their fate. They went to FL and proceeded to get blown out and then scrap a little in the final game but 2003 Giants fans knew... remember this was less than a year after game 6 of the 2002 series... that something's were not meant to be.
― Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 9 October 2010 06:05 (fourteen years ago)
As a Cardinals fan, I don't know how to feel about Ankiel's home run tonight after La Russa sent him up to pinch hit against Jonathan Broxton with two outs in game three of the 2009 NLDS. I can't decide if that or his home run tonight was the more divine comedy.

Yeah, that was a great post.
Why won't Wagner be eligible for the NLCS roster (if the Braves make it) if they replace him on the roster vs the Giants? What's the rule there? Side note: why wasn't Saito on the DS roster in the first place?
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 10 October 2010 02:47 (fourteen years ago)
i think that's the price u have 2 pay 2 demote/replace an injured player 2 prove theyre really injured
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 October 2010 02:50 (fourteen years ago)
xp yea and jurrjens wasnt either? did they carry more position players for some reason?
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 October 2010 02:51 (fourteen years ago)
Smoltz was just reading that substitution rule (badly) on the Twins-Yanks broadcast. If you make a roster substitution, the substituted player is out for that round and the next one, tough noogies, the end. Sounds like it's a moot point with Wagner though.
― In "Bob" There Is No East or West (WmC), Sunday, 10 October 2010 02:52 (fourteen years ago)
xp they're still carrying 11 pitchers, but more young bullpen arms instead of starters. But that still doesn't explain why Saito isn't on the roster?
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 10 October 2010 07:00 (fourteen years ago)

cmon WmC, it's the Giants... this is a 5 game series for sure.
Also w/r/t who has been worse for Atlanta: Heyward vs. Conrad
An OF misplay is far more costly than an infield one. Jason "the best RF in the NL" Heyward's misplay (which the scorer ruled as a "hit" for Fontenot) cost the Braves 3 bases defensively, the same as all of Conrad's errors added up. Heyward's excuse "I lost it in the sun" seemingly shrugged off by all involved.

"Cox got himself into this mess. If Conrad really isn't good enough to start, Cox should have known that before today. And I can't stop thinking that all this could have been avoided, if Cox had simply lifted Conrad for a better defensive player in the ninth inning of Game 3.
I'm sorry to say this about a Hall of Fame manager who's on the way out. But he blew this one from seven ways to Sunday. Plain and simple."
