O.Leee.B. (Leee), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Schmidt and Nen doubtful for opener

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark Prior will be on the 15-day DL to start the season, but is expected to start during the first homestand, April 12-19.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

More Cubs injury news:

Prior and his "mysterious" Achilles tendon to return to pitching off the mound Tuesday. I don't like the part where they describe his injury as recurring with "suprising fierceness."

Sammy Sosa got hit in the head by a Brian Giles triple (video anyone?).

Top Cubs pitching prospect Angel Guzman could be ready to go by May (coming off shoulder surgery last year after punching a dugout wall, YEAH!), and Shawn Estes replacement Ryan Dempster (reconstructive elbow surgery) apparently "far ahead of schedule," much to the delight of hitters around the league.

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 29 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Woody Williams has been pitching with pain all Spring. If he gets shellacked again in his next start, the Cards will probably sit him for awhile and go with Danny Haren.

Looks like Lankford will be in Left and Womack at 2nd (if his arm doesn't fall off). Also, bye bye K-Rob.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

tony's road ops over the past 3 years: .543. paging bo hart.

bnw, what's the cards rotation look like with williams? i had thought haren was a lock. and do you know if wainwright is likely to get a look this year?

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

rotation is matty mo, woody, suppan, carpenter, marquis. I think "rufus" wainwright is behind haren and maybe simontacchi in the pecking order (but the top pitching prospect by a mile). He's been impressive during the Spring. Don't know if he'll get a look but I imagine they'll keep him in AAA unless a second starter were to go down or struggle mightily.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to turn this into the Mark Prior injury status thread, but the Trib is reporting he's out for April. Apparently back spasms were part of the problem, along with the chronic Achilles thing. And if that weren't enough, there are rumors that the Cubs were intenionally trying to disguise some sort of elbow problem that he got an MRI for yesterday. Certainly not good news for Dusty's pitcher abuse PR problem.

"The Cubs, who ordered Prior back home for an in-depth examination of his right elbow and right Achilles tendon, hadn't publicly addressed Prior's elbow issues. An MRI on Prior's elbow showed no damage to the medial collateral ligament or ulnar nerve."

Prior seems OK

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

this morning's sun-times said he's going to be on the shelf for "the next several days" (5? 7? 30? 180?) because they don't want to risk other injuries as a result of prior overcompensating for the inflamed achilles.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

just when he thought it was safe to go back on the field

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

want a good laugh? on my team for my other league I have griffey, matt mantei (paper cut from fan mail), and b. donnelly, who took a liner to the face in spring training and is still suffering from headaches! my team's decimated already!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

kaz matsui out 2nd time this spring

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

garciaparra out at least 3 weeks

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't let me down, Pokey!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Jack McDowell insinuates steroids might be to blame for Prior's nagging Achilles injury.

At first I was skeptical, but then I compared head sizes.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, it'll probably be bellhorn filling most of the vacuum, if anyone does. in 2002 he posted an OPS of .886 in chicago with a G/F ratio of .79; in 2003 his G/F rose to 1.49 and his ops was .646. if he starts hitting flyballs again, look out.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Prior has gained at least 25 pounds from about 20 years ago... it's pretty obvious, do we even need to discuss this? NEXT!

FYI: Then PAC10 ace Jack McDowell got his assed handed to him on numerous occasions (don't have the box scores online) when he was a senior at Stanford and Bonds was at sophomore at ASU. Bonds went 5-5 with 3 HRs one game and a 3B. Of course Bonds' best friend at the time was Greg "W8 GURU" Anderson so you know he was obviously injecting massive amounts of growth hormones and "the clear".

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Prior has gained at least 25 pounds from about 20 years ago

That's one monstrous three year old! Point taken though, it's obvious there were high amounts of HGH in his system that allowed for some very rapid growth between the ages of 10-23.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe even elevated levels of testosterone! Or is that killing the joke dead?

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, John, that's who I meant to give the Gipper speech - he slipped my mind when gygax! ripped out my heart w/ his news bulletin. I have faith that Bellhorn won't suck too badly (cf. his success in 1998, & the I HOPE stellar BoSox scouting & coaching staff noticing those trends). And, if suck comes to suck, there's always Carlos Febles waiting in the wings, w/ his peculiar "potential" cache.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Bellhorn was always more than happy to take a walk, and that was the primary reason the Cubs got rid of him last year (that and he wasn't hitting the long ball at all). Hopefully the Red Sox will be a bit more forgiving of his plate discipline. I wouldn't be surprised if he exceeds expectations filling in. Granted the expectations are fairly low, but still...

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i know it's not right to revel in someone else's misfortune, but it looks like omar daal is out for the season. whether this forces the o's to make a trade or gives a youngster an opportunity, this is an overall positive development.

gosh...if only sequi and cordova could go on the ir.

j.q. higgins, Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Segui down for a visit to the DL sometime in early June. If a slot opens up, I'll be happy to push up his appointment (meaning I'll send out Gilooly w/ the lead pipe a little earlier).

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

dear god!

i hadn't even considered that daal's injury could be an april fool's joke!

j.q. higgins, Thursday, 1 April 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like Woody Williams will pitch in the opening series, but I doubt he'll go past 5 innings. (Seems like a stupid move when we have Haren ready and waiting.)

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 4 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Prior out until May at the earliest

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 April 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Notice that the focus now is on the shape of Prior's arm, not his ability to push off a mound. For my money, his true injury is and has always been on his throwing elbow, though he may have stubbed his heel awhile back which gave Cubs brass a nice cover. Not good news either way, but Sergio Mitre came through nicely in his absence last week (7 IP, 2 ER vs. the Braves).

"I'm just trying to find my release point," Prior said.

But as far as being able to get on the mound and throw a baseball, Prior said he's not there yet.

"My arm's not in shape yet enough to get on a mound," he said. "I want to get on the mound, but I know that the more in shape I am on flat ground and long-toss, the easier it will be once I get to the mound."

mattbot (mattbot), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

something wrong with Sabathia?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i fuckin hope not, i just traded for him last week.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Apr 24 Indians.MLB.com's Justice B. Hill reports Cleveland Indians SP C.C. Sabathia (shoulder) had an MRI on his left shoulder and it came up negative. The doctors concurred with the original prognosis with an irritated bicep tendon. He should return to the rotation next weekend. "It's hard to describe. It was pain I couldn't pitch through," said Sabathia. "But 15 minutes later I was in the clubhouse and I felt better. It's been fine ever since. I never had anything like that."

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard on the radio (dubious?) that someone read that Robb Nen claimed that he would be back around the all-star break...

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

byung kim could be back friday.

j.q. higgins, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm.... supposedly he's pitching right now in Portland-AA (???).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Prior still on track for late May according to the Sun Times, threw two innings in a simulated game yesterday and felt "crisp."

Note that first series with the Astros starts May 25.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hopefully the last Prior update. He's was placed on the 60-day DL after K-Gonz broke his wrist to make room for another SS on the roster. if all goes as planned, he'll be be in the rotation for the series that begins June 4 against the Pirates.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Troy Glaus out for shoulder surgery, possibly for the year. It sure looked like he'd regained his 2000-01 form in the early going, and Oakland's chances of catching the Angels just got a bit better.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus. Now Sammy on the DL. FROM A SNEEZE.

First Glaus, now this; I fear the Kings of Oblivion may not soon regain the top spot in fantasy...

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Garret Anderson is still on the DL for a bad back, Salmon is gone for the year and Erstad went on the DL last week; the Angels potential lethal lineup is down to just Bad Vlad and his mini-me like sidekick The Eckstein.

earlnash, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget CHONE!!!

(Still haven't heard anyone pronounce that name, I'm very curious.)

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

shawn, unfortunately

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, I was hoping for cho-NAY. *sigh*

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

As they said on BP the other day... the Angels are better with Erstad out.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Red Sox 3B Mueller to miss six weeks

Boy, I'm sure glad someone took him in the third round before I got the chance to waste a pick on him!

Leee's a Simpson (Leee), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, i'm not the one with the shrine to mueller in my bedroom¡
besides, the way he was going this year, keeping him out of the lineup will only improve my team.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Gonna take more than the absence of a slap hitter to improve your team¡

Leee's a Simpson (Leee), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

another scary night for my hobbling catastrophe of a fantasy team:Floyd day-to-day after collision

"I'm not hanging my head on it," he said. "I'm disappointed. I'm trying to figure -- why me? I'm not living bad. It's not like I'm playing ball by day and robbing people by night. I'm just tired of getting hurt so much."
- well there goes that theory¡

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 30 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

chavez w/ broken arm, no news on how long he'll be out.

terrible blow for the a's obviously

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Maggs' injury -might- be worse than previously thought

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope minnesota can overtake 'em.

supposedly maggs turned down 5 years 70M. not very wise, i don't think.

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

1) I don't.

2) Maggs said that report was 'a lie'.

Back to discussion of injuries.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

They're saying 6-8 weeks for Chavez, which oddly parallels the Glaus injury (except he's probably gone til Sept, at least).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"terrible blow for the a's obviously"

Not to mention my fantasy team, which has a gimpy Chipper Jones and had Torii Hunter on the DL for three weeks.

earlnash, Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

There have been some strange injuries this season.

There's the harrowing: Red Sox first-base coach Lynn Jones, who "accidentally stuck himself in the eye with a screwdriver trying to open a package and lost both the eye's lens and iris." He's set to rejoin the team after doctors actually managed to save some of his eye's vision.

And the predictable: David Wells, who fell "onto a wine glass" in his kitchen, severing tendons in his wrist.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

so what really happened to wells¿

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

drunk roughhousing in his kitchen.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

how did a heckler get into his kitchen¿

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Heckler = Rod Beck?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god. A picture of the two of them together would be priceless. They were actually in the same league for a year or two, weren't they?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I didn't realize Beck was playing for the Pads?? I never pay attention to the National League.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 10 June 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Not a fan of baseball TH?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

TH 4 DH.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 10 June 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that the Angels check has cleared, Raul Mondesi is now on the DL.

earlnash, Thursday, 10 June 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

DL'd just in time to miss the PNC homecoming, nice.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Stick a fork in Nen: "With Nen on the verge of returning from a month of no baseball activity, Giants trainer Stan Conte is admitting that it's unlikely Nen will return to major league action in 2004. The Giants' closer took a month off after his throwing sessions consistently led to tenderness in his right arm. He will rejoin the team next week, but there's no push to get him ready for game action this summer."

mussina leaves (a dominantly-pitched) game after 3 with groin tightness, apparently precautionary. shockingly, felix herdia blows the game.

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 12 June 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

More bad news for you John: Domo Arigato Mr. Mariano Rivera is out with back pain/tightness as well.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

and yet i was laughing when i read that...

torre was very nonchalant about it, and he should be ok, but it's obviously worrisome. the yankees bullpen triumvirate (rivera gordon quantrill) has been heavily overtaxed, and although rivera's job is pretty much set in stone, the message should be getting through that it's time to lighten the load. prinz, bean, and proctor are all potential quailty RH RPs that have been wasting in the minors for awhile, and i heard a short while ago that karsay may be back this season, or even soon, which is really surprising.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Brown did this last year, right? He was mowing down everyone for the first half, then his back flared up and he became very average.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, no. 2.30 ERA first half, 2.50 ERA second. he didn't even have a bad month in the second half, which is strange because what you're saying sounded right to me. looking at the month-by-month breakdown i think what happened is that the wins stopped coming, but he was still pitching well.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"prinz, bean, and proctor are all potential quailty RH RPs that have been wasting in the minors for awhile"

forgot that jason anderson (central chip in the benitez trade, also a RHP w/ a pretty good AAA k-rate last year) is also back in the yankee system.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, so much for having dinner tonight.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Wood probably won't be back before the All-Star break. He won't commit to any timetable, probably just to keep the media from hounding him Prior-style. He initially thought he would only miss one start.

There's still no sign of any structural damage, and I think he's been to three separate dudes in the know about these things. He can throw breaking pitches just fine but still feels tightness on the fastball. The official word is that it's taking longer than anticipated because they want him solid for the rest of the year. And supposedly Rothschild is working with him on smoothing out his mechanics, a consultation probably long overdue.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

is it still "tightness in the forearm"?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, whatever that means. They've examined his shoulder pretty thoroughly, so I'm inclined to think it's just a case of slow recovery more than someone deliberately hiding a more serious injury.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

continuting the trend:

carlos zambrano 15 day DL = allergies
matt clement 60 day DL = herpes
derrek lee out for the season = papercut
moises alou career-ending injury = ingrown toenail

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Clement's would be chin crabs. And Sosa had the ingrown toenail last year, I'm not sure how contagious it is.

But otherwise, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see those injuries at some point this year.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 24 June 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Josh Beckett going on the 15 Day DL with a back injury, appearantly the injury sustained in the game against the White Sox last week. He had just come off of the DL for blisters.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Griffey's hamstring is torn and he is gone for the rest of the season. Not a suprise I realize, but it is sad none the less as his career is has turned into a complete wreck since he went home to the Natti. It is getting so bad, Griff has to be starting to contemplate OPERATION: SHUTDOWN.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Does the guy ever stretch before a game? I know I've seen Will Carroll hint that he doesn't have a very serious stretching routine. But a guy with such chronic leg muscle problems surely knows that hammy injuries and not stretching are pretty well correlated?

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 12 August 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Cincy needs to trade his ass to an AL team where he can live out his days as a DH.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Griffey makes too much money in comparison to how often he is hurt, so he is close to untradeable.

I figure Cinci should honor tradition and ship him to Baltimore for a couple of nobodys and then Jr. will get his act together and win an another MVP and a World Series like Frank Robinson.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 12 August 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Jerome Williams of the SF Giants underwent arthroscopic surgery and may miss the remainder of the season. Just when you thought the Giants pitching woes couldn't possibly get any worse.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 13 August 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Reds put Paul Wilson on the DL, who was their most effective starter (sic). It makes them a bit easier on contenders down the stretch.

Then again, Willy Mo Pena has really come into his own since getting a bunch of playing time when Griffey went down. If you haven't seen this guy bat, he has a wicked attacking swing.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 15 August 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Since I'm too lazy to resurrect the "ESPN assface" thread... Rob Dibble had Paul Wilson as his #3 NL Cy Young choice the other night. Can't make that shit up.

And he spells it WILY Mo! He should pronounce it like the Coyote.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I also saw that feature where Dibble said that about Paul Wilson, that is funny. What a homer, maybe he is bucking for a job in Cinci.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

lay off the Dib! Paul Wilson is projected to have a stellar 12-6 record with a 4.54 ERA! currently he's 9-4! why that's more than two wins for every loss!

Dibble would probably cast a HOF ballot for Jack Armstrong if he could...

The Other Zambrano goes on the DL, but the Mets are relieved it's "only" a strained elbow that doesn't need surgery. Thanks a fuckin' lot, Jim Duquette.

Are those Yankee fans still crying about losing Pettitte, just in time?

I think he gets paid something in the 13mil range, half of which the dodgers will recoup because of insurance. but man, it looks like his body is straight up falling apart. did he do steroids or something? theres something very scott steiner about this..

Will Carroll last week:

As the vultures circle Mark Prior, picking off what's left of his career and reminding you that he was never "perfect" and that they knew he'd fail, I'll remind you that Prior might be the last of his kind. No, not the last injured pitching phenom—we're not that lucky yet. Instead, he's perhaps the last of that lost generation of pitchers that came of age in between the full conversion of all teams to five-man rotations, the expansion and exposure of additional pitchers on those new teams' staffs, heavier reliever usage, and no focus on pitch counts or mechanics. As Prior came up, there were no blogs touting or taunting him; his draft day wasn't even aired on radio, let alone ESPN. The pitchers we're seeing today have come of age fully in the "pitch count era," from high school on. Many saw high pitch counts, but there was notice and concern. We saw pitchers over and over fail, breaking down due to usage not just in the pros, but from years before. Dr. Glenn Fleisig's analogy of pitching arm damage to smoking is apt, because not all smokers get lung cancer, but we don't really know why or why not. It's the same with pitching and pitcher injuries, but as with smoking, the warning labels have helped improve matters. The focus on health may just be the beginning an era where we get more and more healthy young pitchers. The next Mark Prior might avoid a second surgery in Birmingham and if it took sacrificing Prior on that altar, well, I hope it was worth it.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

:( I'm not a Cubs fan, but it's tough not to feel bad for Prior.

Carroll:

Chase Utley, it was just announced, will undergo arthroscopic hip surgery to evaluate and correct any “labral or bony injury.” It’s stunning news and more surprising due to the high level of play from Utley throughout the season and playoffs. This is a serious injury that in the worst case could keep him out six months if there’s significant tears to the acetabular (hip) labrum. Several pitchers have come back from this type of injury - Justin Duchscherer being one - but no player comes to mind. (Update: Gordon Edes reminds me that Mike Lowell has a similar issue, but that his timetable is much shorter. Lowell is still expected back for Spring Training.) The timetable tells us that Utley may have more severe damage that Lowell.
