The Wilpon family, stung by losses and litigation stemming from convicted swindler Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme, is considering selling a minority stake in the New York Mets to infuse cash into the organization.

Principal owner Fred Wilpon and chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon announced Friday they had hired former deputy baseball commissioner Steve Greenberg, managing director of Allen & Company, to explore "potential options including the addition of one or more strategic partners."

Regardless of the outcome, the Wilpons added, they intend to maintain majority controlling interest in the Mets.

The Mets have vigorously asserted that the team has not been affected by the Madoff affair, so Friday's announcement that an infusion of cash from other investors is needed marks a deviation from past statements. The team has committed only $8.1 million in major league contracts this offseason, although the Wilpons still estimate the club's payroll will be in the $145 million-$150 million range this season because of past contract commitments.

"Regardless of the outcome of this exploration, [Wilpon-owned] Sterling [Equities] will remain the principal ownership group of the Mets and continue to control and manage the team's operations," the Wilpons said in a statement. "The Mets have been part of our families for more than 30 years and that is not going to change.

"As we have said before, we are totally committed to having the Mets again become a World Series winner. Our fans and all New Yorkers deserve nothing less."

Alderson was a great hire, even if he is a Selig crony. Terry Collins is a shitty retread, but it's not like managers really matter anyway. Hey Morbz, I need your expert advice. I'm buying tickets tomorrow for a Phillies/Mets game in July (the Sunday game to be exact) at Citi but I don't actually know the stadium. It's gonna be the two of us w/ a baby. What seats do you recommend? I don't want to pay a ton, but I also don't want to bring binoculars to see the game.

Alderson was pretty much the best possible hire IMO and has said all the right things. The only thing that keeps me from loving the Mets unreservedly right now (in a 'look out for them in 5 years' kind of way) is Wilpon idiocy. The most likely scenarios seem to be that the Wilpons sell the team (best case for fans, so long as the new owner doesn't also clean house on Alderson & co); turn the Mets into a small-market operation a la the Pirates or Royals and pocket as much money as they can year in and year out; or lose the team in a bankruptcy auction.

i think i've said it before, but i think that the Mets' decision to defer paying Bobby Bonilla in 2011 was defensible at the time. it didn't turn out so well in light of the franchise's current financial status, but it freed up a lot of cash way back when and got rid of a notorious clubhouse cancer (though they never should've brought him back either).

that doesn't mean that i can't get some cheap LOLs and zings out of this, though.

even expensive LOLs and zings are ok if you don't defer the payments

PHOENIX -- New York Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez has been traded along with cash to the Milwaukee Brewers for two players to be named, the Mets announced.
Rodriguez was in the final season of a deal that guaranteed three years, $37 million. He has a vesting option for $17.5 million that is due to kick in at 55 games finished for 2012. Rodriguez currently is at 34 games finished.
That contract vesting would have crippled the payroll-strapped Mets' attempt to re-sign Jose Reyes next offseason.
The news comes days after K-Rod had switched agents from Paul Kinzer to Scott Boras.

Well then in that case, the other guys are not. 20 bullpen losses = #1 (or #30) in MLB. They would be dominating the NLC if they had a more stingy bullpen.

i guess it's possible or even likely that this is a straight salary dump & they're giving back two pretty marginal prospects, but their system is so depleted as it is that i'd think they'd need to save every piece to try & upgrade the left side of their infield
