I know chipper keeps threatening to retire if he can't play his best, but I hope he keeps playing as long as he can OBP in the 380s. that shit's valuable. too bad we cant DH him :[

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 02:07 (thirteen years ago) link

He seemed to have such a weird season last year. After a long stretch of dismal and hurt, he seemed to suddenly turn the corner and said he felt better than he had in years. I assumed he found some great drugs that suddenly kicked in. 2-3 weeks of productivity, one dumb midair pirouette, and there went the knee.

xp - sorry, Morbs, I wanted a non-mod login.

David Schoenfield said that Heywayrd has already lost 4 at bats this year hitting 6th. Couldn't the 50 at bats he loses if he stays in the 6th hole be worth the win that keeps them out of the playoffs?

http://www.ajc.com/sports/atlanta-braves/braves-pitching-coach-accused-927447.html

McDowell is accused of yelling "Are you a homo couple or a threesome?" to fans sitting in the left-field bleachers. He's also accused of simulating a sex act with a bat.

Giants fan Justin Quinn, attending the game with his wife and 9-year-old twin daughters, said he asked McDowell to watch his language in the presence of children.

According to Allred, the former New York Mets pitcher told Quinn, "Kids don't (expletive) belong at the baseball park."

McDowell, 50, then "picked up his bat and started walking in a threatening manner towards Quinn," Allred said.

Quinn, 33, said McDowell asked him, "How much are your teeth worth?" The Fresno, Calif., resident said he managed to diffuse further hostilities but was encouraged by other fans who had witnessed the scene to file a report.

http://www.ajc.com/sports/chipper-heyward-would-help-970337.html?cxtype=rss_news_128746

Jason Heyward was eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list and play Tuesday, but the Braves’ young slugger had not swung a bat in more than two weeks and was probably still a few days from hitting off a tee.

Braves third baseman Chipper Jones said he understood Heyward wanting to be healthy before he returns, but said the 21-year-old right fielder also needs to understand how important he could be to the Braves right now.

Heyward recently said that he wouldn’t return before his shoulder is completely recovered, that he learned his lesson from trying to play through injury as a rookie in 2010.

“There’s not (pat answers); it’s within each individual player,” Jones said. “I think where Jason might have erred was the comment that he made, ‘I’m not coming back until it doesn’t hurt anymore.’ That has a tendency to rub people the wrong way. And we understand where he’s coming from. He wants to be healthy when he plays, so he can go out and give himself the best opportunity to be successful. I get that.

“What Jason needs to realize is that Jason at 80 percent is a force, and Jason at 80 percent is better than a lot of people in this league. And that there are a bunch of his teammates that are out there playing with discomfort and not healthy.”

The biggest reason why those numbers are so low: HEYWARD HAS PLAYED IN 45 OF THE TEAM'S 61 GAMES AT 80% OR LESS (.214 average, .317 on-base percentage).

Everything has gone down the shitter tonight. Shafer out with a fractured fingertip, Chipper's quad hurts (though he pinch-hit tonight), McLouth got tossed arguing balls and strikes (followed by Fredi), and McCann just bunged up his back trying to throw out a runner. He tried throwing a soft toss to the pitcher and headed straight down the tunnel. And it's another extra-inning game.

I've noticed some Braves players doing a thing lately -- when a player comes back to the dugout after scoring or driving in a run, instead of high fives or chest bumps or forearm bumps, there are a lot of long, slow, tender hugs. It's kind of hilarious and awesome. Is this a Braves-only thing or is it something that's going around baseball in general?

heyward is playing really terribly

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 August 2011 17:57 (thirteen years ago) link

In case you couldn't tell I was just kidding, but this whole thing is just a total WTF situtation. He's having a down year but Heyward is still a major talent who is likely going to be a worldbeater when he's 24. Costanza = perennial 5th outfielder who had a hot run at the right time.

frogbs, Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Not "had" -- that hot run is still happening. And we're a couple of years from Heyward's 24th.

No argument with either of those assessments, but I blow my nose on critics who get after Fredi for taking advantage of the fact that JH's slump and JC's hot streak are happening at the same time. (Not necessarily you -- I'm thinking more of Peter Hjort, who apparently can't take being disagreed with and has closed comments at the CAC blog.)

polyphonic, Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Mattingly does ok. The mistakes he makes arent necessarily because he makes a bad decision, its just that the players he has at his disposal fucking suck, or are hurt. Handing the bally to Javy Guerra (26 yo straight out of AA) in the 9th inning has been kind of awesome. Hes 10/10 in save opportunities. He'll also let dudes like Kenley Jansen and Scott Elbert close out games.. both of whom are rookies.

Not particularly stressed by this slo-mo trainwreck -- could see it coming after the home series with the Mets, made my peace with it during the Nats series. Go Brewers.

Hope Larry reconsiders coming back in 2012 and retires as a player, stays on as hitting coach.

is fredi gonna get savaged for this collapse? felt like there was a lot of misguided hate at him this year, and i'm not sure how much of this was his doing

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 04:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess i wasn't paying that much attention because somehow their situation didn't seem in doubt, but

not that his numbers were that great but it seemed like maybe teheran might have gotten more use. or kimbrel might have been used less. i dunno.

mookieproof, Thursday, 29 September 2011 05:01 (thirteen years ago) link

the thing about him overusing kimbrel & venters is the worst complaint of em all to me

first of all, they didn't throw an exorbitant amount of innings. secondly, if those two throw a combined 25 less innings, the braves prob aren't even in position to win the wild card on the final day.

ajcbraves David O'Brien
Actually he ended group interview when asked. RT @Dylan_Reeves: @ajcbraves Did he answer why we pitched to Pence with Martinez on deck?

What's amazing about last night is, Northeast bias aside, this game is hardly being pored over (outside of ATL I'm sure).

we should all take some time out from lol'ing at the BoSox to lol at the Braves a little i guess.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 30 September 2011 01:13 (thirteen years ago) link

true, but the braves were not unanimous picks to win the toughest division in baseball either

not clowning on you but it's been remarkable today how today all my Braves and Red Sox fan friends were cool about this. It's like they passed through the fifth Kubler-Ross stage of grief well before the games last night.

sanskrit, Friday, 30 September 2011 02:12 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha, that's exactly how it feels to me! Believe me, I was doing plenty of screaming and pleading last week. But by the time it came down to the Braves vs. the best team in the league and the Cards vs. the worst team in the league, I was pretty calm. The idea of calm Red Sox fans is a little surprising though.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Friday, 30 September 2011 03:07 (thirteen years ago) link

And since I did one for the Red Sox, it's only fair --

Fredi announced Thursday that coaching staff would return. Did they not tell him, or did he not consider LP part of the staff?

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Friday, 30 September 2011 20:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I like both moves -- Braves dropping LP and Wren reminding Fredi who's boss.
