the team this year is like if you simulated the first season of a video game & then made some moves in the off season to ensure that your team was unbeatable

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

We should just admit that every AL East team is flawed now, so we have room to be surprised later.

Elegant Bitch (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think they're unbeatable, the talking heads on nesn are already suggesting this could be the first modern sox team to win 100 and i'm thinking geez they're really setting up everyone for some major potential disappointment

i think last year's yankees looked about as good on paper at the beginning of the season. and they were good, but they didn't win the division or the WS.

eh no one would blink if it was a 17 year old dominican kid; the fact that he's playing softball not baseball is more or less immaterial.

fast-pitch softball, it's worth noting, is extremely difficult for batters! so if he's holding his own than he has as much of a chance as anyone (i.e. not all that much) of being able to hit pro pitching in 4-5 years.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 26 February 2011 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

i think they would if it was a dominican kid who had never played baseball!

softball is really hard for batters but its also very different w/r/t angles, techniques etc

just because its hard doesnt mean excelling at it it makes you cut out for major league baseball imo

as far as catching goes they seem to like his arm strength--that should translate fine.

kinda LOL @ the optimism in this thread... "video game team"?

If your video game team is starting JEllsbury, Scutaro, Ortiz, JDDrew, Salty you are doing something wrong (or you might prefer a more "challenging" mode). That said RSox are solid from #2-#5 in their lineup, but compared to the Yankees, gtfo.

Obvs. pitching/defense is the difference in the fan's mind. Yet I could see them finishing 3rd again this year with <90 wins. Tampa continues to kick these guys' asses day in/out and nobody remembers that *shrug*

J0rdan S., Saturday, 2 April 2011 04:02 (fifteen years ago)

ideally i think you'd have crawford batting first, pedroia second & ellsbury last or ellsbury first, crawford second and pedroia fifth but idk if you want ellsbury & crawford hitting back to back

J0rdan S., Saturday, 2 April 2011 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i think the most important thing is pedroia-gonzalez-youk for 2-3-4, everything else doesn't matter much if you've got that. sticking your best hitter at 5th is nagl

i think sabermetric cw is that the most important lineup spots are #1, #4, #2, #5, #3 (in that order) - and that its a fun thing to debate but ultimately not a big deal (ie. the difference between the best and worst possible lineup over the course of a season is a couple dozen runs at most)

that said, i'd never hit ellsbury higher than 6th, and definitely never ever leadoff... you gotta be able to take a walk or two man

Insane game, I didn't think we'd see any homers, the wind was blowing in hard from left field the entire game.

Go to a Rangers-Sox game in the last decade and ~1/2 the crowd were Sox fans and no one gave you shit. Rangers fans were a lot cockier this year.

Neyer:

"According to the preseason predictions and projections, one of the [0-5] teams is (or was) great (Boston), one is good (Tampa Bay) and one is lousy (Houston).

In 2010, only one team (Houston) opened the season 0-5.

In 2009, only two teams (Cleveland and Washington) opened the season 0-5.

In 2008, only one team (Detroit) opened the season 0-5.

Some of these teams were expected to be better than others, but I think it's safe to say that none of them were expected to reach the World Series, as so many of expected the Red Sox to reach the World Series this year.

But we can chase our tail around all day, and wind up devouring ourselves. The Red Sox' start probably doesn't tell us a great deal about how good they are ... but it does tell us, in the most concrete of terms, that they've dug themselves a hole. Not a massive hole, perhaps. But if the Red Sox are going to win 90 games - a rough minimum for a real shot at the postseason - they now have to go 90-67 the rest of the way.

Which of course is far from impossible if they're as talented as we thought, just one week ago. But each new loss does make us question our judgment just a little bit, doesn't it?"

This "...to begin a season" stuff is a bad case of compounded small sample size.

Extrapolating results based on not just 5, but the first 5 concurrent games of historical data?

How about these guys find out how many playoff teams had at least one 5-game losing streak during their season? Boston might not even have another streak like this all year.
Losing games is not good, but suddenly everyone forgets why this team was unanimously picked to make the playoffs.

I know this kinda thing is easy fodder, but wtf come on

anyone who had a chance to watch angels bball for the past decade would tell you that lackey was a shane reynolds type who was lucky to have a superior team behind him to pad his win totals and make him look a little more schilling-esque. reynolds was also washed up by age 32-33....

2007:

After fouling back a good pitch on Bootcheck's first offering, Huff took a ball and then smacked the third pitch inches foul down the third-base line. If it had been fair, Huff could have easily reached second, and he said he wouldn't have stopped at first -- even to complete the cycle.

"In that situation, I'm going two [bases]," Huff said. "I feel like you cheat the game if you stop at first. I wouldn't even count that as a cycle."

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

1987:

In the 7th inning of a June, 1987 game in San Francisco, right fielder Kevin Bass needed only a single to become just the third player in Astros history to hit for the cycle. With the Astros leading, 6-2, the game seemed well in hand. So when Bass lined an easy single to left field, he seemingly joined an exclusive group. But Bass was not thinking about individual accomplishments, but rather making sure his team won the game. Instead of stopping at first, he hustled to second and barely beat the throw in to pick up a double. He lost the distinction of hitting for the cycle, but won a place in the hearts of countless Astros fans. For that, he deserves consideration on this page. Bass batted #5 in the lineup behind Glenn Davis. Jim Deshaies started for the Astros against Kelly Downs. A summary of Bass's game:

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

Reaching second when you need a single for the cycle should count as a cycle, like how you still get a double even if you're thrown out trying to reach third.

Mark C, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

so should we count a triple as a double? or a HR as a triple?

Mordy, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:44 (fifteen years ago)

Jeff Frye:

Frye got the hardest part of the cycle, the triple, out of the way in the second inning. He then doubled in the fifth and barely cleared the left-field fence for his second homer of the season in the sixth before facing Texas Rangers rookie Kevin Foster in the seventh inning.

With a full count, Frye hit a liner to the gap in right-centre field for what should have been a double. After rounding first and looking at coach Garth Iorg for advice, he trotted back to first base and received a standing ovation.

"Before I went up there I asked (Jays hitting coach Cito Gaston) what I should do if I hit a pitch like that," said Frye.

"He said `stay at first and tell them I told you to.' So if he says it's alright then I guess it's alright."

got electrolytes (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

(x-post) Perhaps not a HR as a triple as that's such a specific and tricky skill. But 3B as 2B makes sense. Yes I know I'm being arbitrary and it'd never work!

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

i think they should stay on first. when you're up by 10 in the last inning it's no more selfless to take the double than take the single. it's just silly. get the cycle. those are pretty cool.

cad; it is stupid, but I remember when the Brewers 5th outfielder hit one last year, and it got them the lead on Sportscenter for the first time in forever. I mean yeah it's a dumb accomplishment but people do think it's nify and if nothing else it gives you a lot of free publicity (for you and the team). Besides, up by 10, last inning...what how much more WPA do you really get for a double there? Like .001%?

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

we are playing a game however, and hitting for the cycle happens rare enough that it's kinda neat when it happens. i'm not so attached to it tho so don't feel a big need to convince me. i just enjoy watching stuff that rarely happens, even when it's totally arbitrary and meaningless. it's not totally meaningless obv -- it means you hit a HR, a triple, four hits in a game, etc etc, but the combination obviously doesn't matter and something like this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major_League_Baseball_hitters_with_four_home_runs_in_one_game - is obviously way way cooler.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

No I'm just saying that "the way the game is played" changes when one team is up by so much that the other team would have to pull a historical comeback to win. I think there's a point in the 9th inning if you're up by so much where some managers stop putting in actual pinch hitters and just send up their relievers, for example. Like, I wouldn't blame Fuld if he just took the cycle there.

I was at that Jeff Frye cycle game. What made it awesome was that Kelly Gruber - the only other blue jay to hit for the cycle - happened to be in town that day and ran onto the field to congratulate him, it was pretty epic. Apparently Kelly was across town and they called him up to tell him that Frye only had a single left to complete the cycle. Pretty bullshit move to stop at first imo, but when you're there at the time and you're killing the other team it seems ok. Especially if the rest of your career is completely unremarkable :D

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I don't mean the Rays in general but I mean for the season so far, yeah

I mean look at the first 10 games; you got the team hitting like .136, the horrible 2-8 record, the team somehow losing on Manny which was supposed to be a "win-win", I mean it must be demoralizing especially considering that they were supposed to have a shot this year...all I'm saying is that hitting a cycle is usually a big story and you can argue it picks up the team, so whatever. I know to you and most people who think critically about baseball that it doesn't mean anything really and I'm not going to pretend that it does, but smacking a double with a 10-run lead in the 9th doesn't really mean much either

btw for the record no team has ever came back by scoring more than 9 runs in the 9th inning, that's why I said historical

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i guess i would say that putting up 16 on the even-more-hapless red sox ought to accomplish the same thing, in the more valuable context of winning a baseball game. but ok.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

ought to. maybe it will because it's in the AL East. from what I've read most of the discussion was "Dice-K GTFO". maybe I'm just biased because I remember the only time my team ever really being a big story on SC was when someone hit a cycle (iirc he was released like 2 months later, so it wasn't even like a name player)

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

iirc your team was a big story in 2008 when they were rolling down the stretch and CC was pitching out of his mind

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 04:35 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry I meant to say "last year", yeah their 2008 run was a pretty big deal, but nowadays I'm wondering if the only reason that was a big story was because they knew Sabathia would become a big star next year in FA, most likely with the Yankees. I mean if Sabathia pitched a 1-0 shutout where he scored the only run (say he's the DH this game too), I'm guessing Sportscenter/ESPN.com would go apeshit over it, but for small market teams that's pretty much a non-story, gripe gripe gripe

so earlier in this game, the sox had pedroia on first with two outs and gonzalez at the plate. pedroia steals second and injures his left ankle while sliding (he did stay in the game). gonzo is then intentionally walked, because marco scutaro was batting in youk's spot (youk having left the game earlier after fouling a ball off his foot). scutaro then grounds out or something.

this just really annoyed me--pedroia came up limping and they took the bat out of the hands of the best hitter in the lineup with no one batting behind him.

When he won his first game, in 1992, there were 26 teams in baseball. The Rockies, Marlins, Rays and Diamondbacks weren't around.

Wakefield once threw 172 pitches in a game. It was on April 27, 1993 against Atlanta. He allowed two runs in 10 innings despite walking 10, hitting two and striking out just one. The Pirates won the game 6-2 and he got the win.

Jim Leyland, the manager who allowed those 172 pitches, is with the Tigers these days. Imagine if he tried that again?

My friend and I were down to see the Jays tonight, and we spent the whole game talking to the Boston guy seated next to us. Pretty interesting--younger than us by a couple of decades (he had a six-year-old's memories of the '86 Series), with amazing recall for recent history. He was able to reconstruct the whole sequence of events, batter by batter, around Pedro's departure from Game 7 of the 2003 Boston-New York series, plus lots of other detailed background about trades and such from the past few years. Of course, when my friend asked him who was on base for Bucky Dent's home run, he was lost.

Jim Palmer, broadcasting on the Orioles' network, is stunned by how passive Erik Bedard is now. Leads 2-1, but early pitch count very high.

What the hell does this mean? Wouldn't a passive pitcher float fastballs over the heart of the plate?

That's what was truly astounding. I'm watching Papelbon on the computer, looking like god himself couldn't foul one off through two batters, and the announcer says the Yankees have first and third, none out. Boston falls apart, I go back to the TV assuming the Yankees will be in the middle of a rally, and within 30 seconds Longoria wins it. I still haven't found out how the Rays got out of that jam. Incredible.

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

kalish prob not an everyday player if that spike of plate discipline he had earlier in the year isn't real. also was surprisingly bad in rf for a young athletic guy.

i think there are some more nuanced questions in terms of how you can change this team. one legitimate one is what they have in youkilis going forward--bad body, playing 3b every day really seemed to take a toll on him, i wonder if he'd have some value to a team like the giants.

well from up here in the trenches i don't think there are a ton of ppl, certainly not a majority, who feel good about moving on from tito.

it really sounds like a mutual decision--he needs a change, they potentially need a change. i think if they picked up both his options years and made a couple of personnel moves he could easily get the clubhouse back. but he may just need to move on.

let's run down all the fun stuff that's come out in the last two days!

youkilis - cynical, sour asshole who is too vocal about other ppl's business

gonzo - clueless, apparently lacks understanding of what it means to play for a winner in a major market

ortiz - publicly questioned management on how aceves was being used

beckett, lackey, lester, varitek - formed assholish private clique

"unnamed pitchers" - sat around the clubhouse drinking on days when they weren't starting

some portion of the team - fat, unconditioned, and/or out of shape

no ego to speak of, rarely made a misstep with the media, brilliant playoff manager

call all destroyer, Friday, 30 September 2011 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think anyone would accuse joe torre of being a brilliant in-game manager, but managing a team of v. highly paid stars in a high-pressure town takes people skills that the pirates' job doesn't require.

but both torre and tito seemed to be pretty good at it

mookieproof, Friday, 30 September 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not shocked that the Red Sox supposedly morphed into "25 players 25 cabs v.2011" but of course nobody seemed to complain about that in August when they looked like the best team in baseball, which is just another reason why "chemistry" in baseball is a misused term.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 30 September 2011 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

well isn't the point of "chemistry" that when things aren't going good the chemistry (lack thereof i guess) doesn't exacerbate it?

call all destroyer, Friday, 30 September 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

dammit i liked tito

lol-qaeda (am0n), Friday, 30 September 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

xpost it doesn't help, but who's to say that it makes the problem worse? In this case, no amount of chemistry would have helped the fact that the Red Sox starters had a 6.5 ERA in September.

Jackie McMullin used the Patriots as an example of good leadership or whatever, which is a bizarre comparison to make ... Bellichick and Brady are heartless, calculating bastards with absolutely no sentimentality whatsoever. They win because they know how to assemble the right pieces and how to motivate people, I don't think that "chemistry" factors into it at all.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 30 September 2011 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

honestly, and this is not directed at you in particular, but i feel like ppl who discount chemistry in baseball have never worked in a medium to large size organization in their lives. because your level of investment in what you do every day actually does matter.

call all destroyer, Friday, 30 September 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

if you generalize and apply the things we've heard about the 2011 red sox to any other type of organization, any reasonable person would say "wow that sounds fucked up" but baseball is an exception for some reason.

call all destroyer, Friday, 30 September 2011 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

But baseball teams that hate each other win all the time. And I don't think it's comparable to other medium size organizations because there's more turnover in sports, in a company you want people to build their careers there and buy into the company philosophy, I don't think there's anything like that in sports. Plus, there's the money -- when you're earning 10M/yr then there will always be guys who want to get paid and go home.

That's why MLB isn't like the NBA, in basketball you have maybe two big stars and if they're not on the same page then the team falls apart, everyone else on the team has to adapt themselves to the style that the star(s) and the coach want to play to be successful. If you don't fall in line then there's no place for you on the team. Baseball isn't like that.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 30 September 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

they missed manny as a focal point for everyone's hatred

mookieproof, Friday, 30 September 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

i think where chemistry might come into play is when a team starts to slide downhill, if the chemistry sucks and people start pointing fingers then it may start to snowball a little more than if everyone had been all "we are family" or w/e

omar little, Friday, 30 September 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

mookieproof, Friday, 30 September 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's hilarious that Lackey was part of this bitchfest drinking clique when he sucks so much.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 30 September 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

lackey had this rep as being a poor man's schilling when he was with anaheim, based upon some forgotten postseason performances and his very good '05-'07 run, but he was more like the righty zito at the end there. lots of warning signs and it was a pretty iffy signing even at the time.

mookieproof, Saturday, 1 October 2011 05:16 (fourteen years ago)

Wrong guy got fired here it seems to me as a total outsider. Their pitching staff especially the starters totally imploded. They had 18 games in the final month giving up 6 runs or more (going 3-15 in those games). Fire the pitching coach. The GM was the one that spent a kings ransom on John Lackey and Dice K; one guy who got clocked a ton by the Red Sox in Fenway and a starter from Japan, which outside of Hideo Nomo for a few years has never really panned out.

To me, this wasn't nearly as nasty as the dumpster fire that went on with Baker, Sosa and those 2004 Cubs. That was a club that was at each others throat, getting into conflict with the announcer and all sorts of bad play.

This was ugly and there was a lot of people on the outside pointing fingers but to me this is just a pitching staff that turned to total crap.

I like reading all the dirt and gossip as much as anyone else, but this kind of behaviour probably isn't all that unusual, it probably happens with a handful of teams every year but because they're 20 games out of first or they win despite being disfunctional, nobody cares and it never gets written about. And if the Rays get blown out 7-0 on the final day of the season and the Red Sox hang on to win 3-2, then we wouldn't be hearing about any of it now. Plus, there isn't really anything shocking in that story, almost everything described in there could have come out of "Ball Four".

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

And if the Red Sox had won the WS, we'd probably be reading about how playing video games and drinking beer in the clubhouse helped keep the players loose, "you've got to stay loose to win", etc.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

all of that unsubstantiated shit about francona is particularly sleazy imo. the chicken and beer and videogames stuff is hilarious and believable from that trio of increasingly fat choads.

In the '70s, poisonous, dysfunctional clubhouses won exactly half the World Series played. (I don't know if the A's count, though--it was more that all the players hated the owner.)

On October 31, 2005, Epstein resigned, rejecting a three-year, $1.5-million-per-year contract for personal reasons. According to The Boston Globe, "This is a job you have to give your whole heart and soul to," he said. "In the end, after a long period of reflection about myself and the program, I decided I could no longer put my whole heart and soul into it." Because it was Halloween the night he resigned from the Red Sox, Epstein left Fenway Park wearing a gorilla suit in an attempt to avoid reporters. A witness reported spotting a person wearing a gorilla suit driving a Volvo similar to Epstein's that night.

it's weird to me that ppl keep bringing up "but all the great teams were drunks!!" or w/e -- i mean that's true, but it's also not the point -- i don't think the piece intended to paint the drinking/eating chicken/video games thing as inherently bad, but rather that there is a feeling that those actions by the three pitchers were isolationist and divisive in a way that was detrimental to the team. i mean, that last part i guess is debateable -- not like we'll ever know 100% either way -- but it was kind of dismaying seeing smart writers deride the story on twitter

i aaw a lot of tweets saying things like "but if the red sox won, we'd be celebrating their camaraderie, right?" which is just a really disengenuous (or stupid) thing to say, bcuz the point is that there was no camaraderie, as evidenced (allegedly) by the drinking and eating and gaming.

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 13 October 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

except, according to Big Papi, the drinking and eating and gaming has been a clubhouse cornerstone for his entire tenure

right, which is why the "they were doing it for years!!" retort doesn't really hold for me. it's like, your boss prob wouldn't care if you posted to ilx all the time while at work as long as you also got your work done, but your ilx posting at work would start to be seen in a very negative light if you just stopped doing work and also pretty much dropped the pretense of caring about work

someone in the Red Sox organization blamed their collapse partially on Francona's failed marriage and chronic pain medication abuse

Here are the side notes:

I'd like to briefly address the complete moron in the Red Sox organization who insinuated to a reporter that Terry Francona had a problem with prescription pills.

Dear Moron,

Congratulations! You have just (a) attacked the best and most popular manager your team has ever had while (b) displaying a complete lack of institutional loyalty, which (c) pretty much guarantees that no one in his right mind will want to manage your team now, and (d) turned everyone against each other causing (e) massive paranoia which will undoubtedly lead to (f) a thousand more stories about how dysfunctional your organization is, which will only intensify the ill effects of (b,c,d,e). You are the worst person in the world. Quit.

For future reference, you fucking moron, when the greatest manager in the history of your team leaves, under any circumstances, you say the following: "He did a wonderful job for us, for many years, and we wish him only the best." You do not insinuate to a reporter that he had a drug problem or that he was distracted by a failing marriage. This is true whether or not he actually did have a drug problem, by the way. It's 100 percent irrelevant. You take the high road. Do I really need to explain this to you, you fucking moron?
