let the omar infante era begin~~
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:01 (fourteen years ago)
Talk to baseball people, and they will tell you how much the Marlins’ bullpen has improved from the group that went 17-25 and blew 25 saves – second most behind Baltimore – in 2010. “We have one of the best bullpens in the league” now, manager Edwin Rodriguez said, eyeing Friday’s start of spring training. But ask Marlins executive Larry Beinfest if this is the team’s best group of relievers in years, and he’s cautious. “You’re asking the wrong guy,” he said. “Bullpens are so unpredictable. We had a very good bullpen in 2009 and we brought back most of them in 2010 and it struggled. But we have more weapons.”The overhaul began with the trade of Cameron Maybin to San Diego for right-handers Edward Mujica (2-1, 3.62 ERA) – who held batters to a .226 average, with 72 strikeouts and six walks in 692/3 innings – and Ryan Webb (3-1, 2.90). Hard-throwing lefty Mike Dunn (2-0, 1.89), acquired with infielder Omar Infante from Atlanta in the Dan Uggla trade, allowed just a .211 average, was effective against right- and left-handed hitters, and struck out 27 in 19 innings. And lefty pickup Randy Choate (4-3, 4.23) allowed left-handers to hit .202 against him with Tampa in 2010.With those four, Leo Nuñez, Clay Hensley (2.16 ERA) and Brian Sanches (2.26) – and Burke Badenhop still around – there’s no blatant weak link, though Nuñez (30 for 38 on saves) must prove he’s closer-worthy.“Webb and Mujica have closer-type stuff,” Beinfest said. “So does Dunn. When we made the trade with San Diego, we had an eye on Webb being a closer candidate. But we think Leo can do the job.”Rodriguez said Nuñez will begin the season as the closer. But he hasn’t done enough to earn the multiyear deal that his agent inquired about. “Leo doesn’t command the ball well enough to be consistent,” one Marlins official (not Beinfest or Rodriguez) said. “When he airs out his fastball, he tries to overthrow and gets out of control.”Rodriguez said Monday that Nuñez “needs to study hitters better, watch video, and have a plan before the game.” Nuñez “got the message” when Hensley replaced him as the closer in September, Rodriguez said, adding he used his change-up too much at times and knows “he needs to make some changes.’’Scouts rave about Dunn: “His stuff is electric,” one scout said. Although he walked 17 in 19 innings, control wasn’t a big problem in the minors and he’s not another Andrew Miller, the scout said. “Dunn is a power arm and we haven’t had that power lefty in the pen for some time,” Beinfest said. There are questions, beyond Nuñez’s consistency. Mujica allowed too many homers last year (one every five innings), and 14 each of the past two years. Rodriguez cannot use Choate much against right-handers, who hit .410 against him (16 for 39). And it will be interesting to see how Webb and Mujica fare away from San Diego’s spacious Petco Park, where they pitched much better. Webb, for example, allowed a .232 average at home, .319 outside Petco. Chatter• Any chance of a Marlins trade for Texas third baseman Michael Young hinges on the Rangers agreeing to pay well over half of the $48 million left on his contract (through 2013). The teams have talked, but the Marlins didn’t appear optimistic Tuesday. …

i think i will be watching this team a bit this year, they are ~intriguing~
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)
yeah... i think they have a chance to be competitive if pretty much nobody on the team gets hurt, and even if they're like 5 games under .500 again it should still be fun watching jj/hanley/stanton/morrisson
at least that's what i'm telling myself
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:16 (fourteen years ago)
is omar infante out for six weeks or was that a weird dream that i had?
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 16 February 2011 15:17 (fourteen years ago)
oh he WAS out for six weeks
anyway i hope they give dominguez the starting 3B job even if he hits like .220 -- klaw said he's already as good a defnder as zimmerman, and as much as i love the comedic stylings of emilio bonifcaio, the defense could really use it

can anyone explain to me why this is legal in baseball? how far off the base do you have to be before someone isn't allowed to try and break your legs?
http://i52.tinypic.com/2h3u6n9.jpg
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 9 April 2011 02:37 (fourteen years ago)
1. No.
2. As long as the runner can somehow reach the base, it's "fair" game -- right?
― Andy K, Saturday, 9 April 2011 02:45 (fourteen years ago)
lol j0rdy, that is really a clean play right there.
did you see Swisher break that kid's leg last night? he wasn't even in the same zip code as the bag.

apparently Swisher felt so guilty he visited the kid in the hospital (it was his 3rd? game in the USA).
― City of Jorts (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 9 April 2011 02:49 (fourteen years ago)
it's still fucked up and a useless play -- i understand that baseball ppl view it as "clean" but i don't understand why mlb tolerates it -- there is like 6 star middle infielders, i don't think it's in baseball's interest to have 250 pound players throwing their bodies at these guys ankles/lower legs
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 9 April 2011 02:51 (fourteen years ago)
if the player is standing ON the base fine, but bill hall sliding over the bag and then going a foot to the right is pure BS
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 9 April 2011 02:52 (fourteen years ago)
btw no one from the twins took offense to swisher's slide, at least not publicly
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 9 April 2011 02:54 (fourteen years ago)
it is "part of the game"...
i'd venture to say the gameplay is much cleaner today than it's been historically.

― sanskrit, Saturday, 9 April 2011 12:10 (fourteen years ago)
actually Swisher could reach the base on that play, so it's legal. (more boring 'I hate major markets even tho I won't rep for a team' trolling)
He visited Nishioka in the clubhouse before they knew it was broken, which cleared up for me why Swisher said "I'm just glad it wasn't worse."

Yeah, the Marlins would definitely be one of two clubs that are eliminated if I was MLB king. They might be the first against the wall.
My second step would be getting rid of the Pirates ownership and giving it to Mark Cuban. I guarantee with that cool stadium, he would turn that club into something into something sweet and interesting.

― earlnash, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:45 (fourteen years ago)
on Monday night (NYT):
With the Marlins winning by four runs and the veteran reliever Randy Choate trying to end it with one out in the bottom of the ninth, McKeon pulled him from the game after Choate had put runners on first and second and fallen behind, 2-0, to the rookie left-handed hitter Lucas Duda.
It is something McKeon has done more than once since he was rehired by Florida on June 19, including once before with Choate. But this time Choate did not take it well, storming through the dugout after he was replaced, and later proclaiming through pursed lips to reporters: “He’s the boss. I’m a player.” He was not hiding his anger.
McKeon, who would rather slip back into retirement than compromise himself by doing something not directly related to winning, shrugged when told of Choate’s reaction.
“I’m running the show,” McKeon said, adding that he did not care what Choate thought of it. “What’s the name of the game? W. It doesn’t matter how you get it.”
...Mets Manager Terry Collins, who like most managers is concerned about his players’ feelings, said he thought Capuano pitched well. McKeon was not so impressed, and turned his assessment into an indictment on today’s lower standards.
“What do you want me to say?” he replied to a question about Capuano. “He gave up four runs. Did he pitch well? You ask him that. This is the problem you have with guys today. They give up four runs and they think they did a hell of a job. You ask Bob Gibson and one of those guys, Bob Feller and Tom Seaver, if they gave up four runs and you find out what they tell you.”

Emilio Bonifacio (OF) FLA 8/4/2011Bonifacio was named the NL Player of the Month for July. His 26-game hitting streak got the headlines, but Boni also led the majors for the month with a .466 OBP and 16 stolen bases. Based on my conversations with people, there were some events leading up to the demotion that had to do with team-related promotional functions. To be clear, the Marlins said they optioned LoMo to New Orleans because he was batting .249.Earlier in the day, he refused to participate in a photo session with season ticket holders at Sun Life Stadium. That might sound surprising, given Logan’s outgoing personality and popularity with fans, but apparently there were some hard feelings related to earlier promotional activities.I know that this past Thursday — a Marlins off day — Logan canceled a charity bowling tournament in Miami because he said the Florida Marlins Community Foundation “dropped the ball” and didn’t sell enough lanes in advance.Logan wasn’t happy about that. And there apparently were some other events in which players were supposed to participate. There was also an autograph signing earlier Saturday, which Logan participated in. But he put his foot down and did not participate in the photo session with season ticket holders.

"We just thought it was in the best interests of Logan to go down and concentrate on baseball and all aspects of being a major leaguer, and work his way back," president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said Sunday.
Morrison, who is in his first full major-league season, has quickly developed into a fan favorite with his outgoing personality and Web wisecracks. He has 60,000 Twitter followers.
Beinfest and manager Jack McKeon declined to say what prompted the decision to send Morrison to the minors. But McKeon often talks of how young players should be seen and not heard while they earn the right to remain in the big leagues, and he's not a fan of Twitter.
"You've got to leave your distractions at the door," McKeon said. "Too many young guys come into the game today and think they've got it made. They're the darlings of the media and they want to run their mouth instead of tending to business. The record books are full of one- and two-year phenoms."

the marlins have had so many terrible drafts in the past 5/6 years and have made some really terrible moves (everything involving cameron maybin comes to mind), and as far as anything positive that they've done in recent memory, the front office could always point to stanton & lomo and reasonably say "hey, we're doing alright up here". so if they run lomo out of town...

i wish stanton would never run hard. he's already pulled his hamstring three times this year. i'm scared that he's going to turn into nelson cruz.

Mike Stanton just hit a ball three miles.

― Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Monday, 19 September 2011 23:53 (fourteen years ago)
that first one might be the longest homer in the history of the stadium
i'm pretty sure he and THE BIG CAT are the only two guys ever to go upper deck
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 September 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)
i'm glad he managed to get one up there before they moved
the second one O_O
he stands so far off the plate that oftentimes when he barrels a ball up it seems like he hits it off the end of the bat but then it just keeps going and you're like "oh, right"

Braves crew showed the Big Cat HR landing spot, split screen with Stanton's. Gallaraga's was longer by a few rows, plus it was about 20' farther to straightaway center. But still, dayummmm x 2.

Joe Simpson was clowning on the Marlins for not measuring home runs ("it must cost money or something") and they were talking about getting a golfer's laser range finder before tomorrow's game so they can report the distance.

have you never read an ozzie guillen tweet or heard him speak before?
― congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)
dude the wsox got the marlins #5 prospect for ozzie..
Martinez, a 23-year-old shortstop, hit .245/.296/.322 in 371 Triple-A plate appearances this year. Prior to the season, Baseball America ranked him fifth among Marlins prospects, saying he profiles as a “solid No. 2 hitter” with a strong arm, good instincts, and soft hands at shortstop. At that time, BA saw a future as a versatile but quality utilityman the worst-case scenario for Martinez.
― strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

this is like the 15 prospect in any real organization
― yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 21:21 (fourteen years ago)
ozzie's been up a few times over the past few years -- there's no way he could start for a good team in the majors, but he could prob hang around as a super utility player like omar infante or something and have good years when his batting average breaks right

i don't feel like digging up the link but basically what happened was some poster on a sports uniform/logo message board did a mock up of the marlins unis and posted those images asking for feedback. i guess then a marlins blogger (this exists) ran across them but either didn't see or didn't comprehend that it was just some uniform nerd looking for some feedback on his designs.
in any event the real unis will prob be worse.

whole design (incl. color-scheme) is bad.
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 12 November 2011 02:41 (fourteen years ago)
the color scheme is bad because there's just too many colors, and PASTEL MIAMI is so old. the problem is that they are sorta boxed in by the other teams in the city having normal, sensible color schemes, and it would be weird for a miami team not to have some brightness to their colors, and i guess that's how they ended up with yellow and orange and blue and whatever else. the uniforms weren't as bad as they could've been tho.
