Let us remember Jeff Kent for his contributions to the Prop 8 campaign, the first political campaign to which he had ever given money.

A source close to the team indicated Tuesday that there is "exasperation" with Zito, that his status as the No. 5 starter is "definitely not safe," and that the team would even consider buying out his expensive contract before Opening Day if that's what it takes to say farewell.

Zito has the rest of spring to either resurrect his worth to the Giants or show an opposing team that he'd be valuable in a trade, according to others familiar with the situation. Meanwhile, the Giants will take a close look at 16-year veteran Jeff Suppan (three shutout innings against Milwaukee on Monday), Class AA left-hander Clayton Tanner and other options for the No. 5 slot.

Heading into spring training, it was widely believed that the Giants were more than willing to ride it out with Zito, given the overall excellence of their rotation. But there's a healthy sense of urgency in the world champions' camp. They didn't clinch a postseason berth until the final game of the 2010 season, and they realize that just a single loss - something that could be avoided - could cost them a chance to repeat.

There is concern that Zito hasn't been properly diligent in maintaining his physical conditioning, and that Monday's performance (five walks in 13 batters) was all too reminiscent of Oct. 2, when he walked home two runs in the first inning against San Diego and took the loss at AT&T Park.

Zito might not realize it, but after being left off last year's postseason roster, he could greatly benefit from a change of scenery. He has been a sub-.500 pitcher in each of his four seasons with San Francisco (40-57 total), the fan base has completely given up on him, and he wouldn't be anywhere near the Giants' roster this spring were it not for his contract: $18.5 million owed this season, $39 million more through 2013 and a $7 million buyout for 2014.

Bank on this: There's no way Zito will be wearing a Giants uniform in 2013. At some point, the team has to cut the cord. That time might come sooner than expected.

i would love to get rid of Zito and maybe even Rowland but with those contracts it's not going to happen. i don't want to pay Rowland's contract and have him play somewhere else, if we are paying these guys than swallow it and let them remain on the team.

this is sort of like saying "well i already have cancer, i might as well let it spread!"

i.e. if you're paying them, regardless of how much, and they're actively hurting the team on the field, then you pay them not to play -- plenty of teams have done that before

1) They aren't going to release Zito.
2) They can't trade Zito (because no one wants that salary.)
3) Even though he's ridiculously overpaid Zito's still way better than most 4 or 5 starters are (certainly better than Jeff Suppan).
4) Zito's also ridiculously durable which even if he wasn't a league average starter would still have value (see Jeff Suppan haha).

SAN FRANCISCO -- When Giants rookie first baseman Brandon Belt was called into manager Bruce Bochy's office after Wednesday's exhibition finale against the A's, he didn't have to wait long to learn his fate.

"He kind of got right to it," Belt said. "As soon as I walked in he said, 'Congratulations, you made it.' I immediately started crying. I tried not to be too big of a wuss in there, but it's hard when you've been dreaming about this your entire life and it finally comes through. I couldn't be happier right now."

Belt made the 25-man roster and will be the everyday first baseman beginning at at Los Angeles on Thursday night, when the Giants begin defense of their World Series championship against the Dodgers.

Belt's inclusion on the roster set off a ripple effect of moves. First baseman Travis Ishikawa was designated for assignment, and Aubrey Huff, who spent much of last season at first base, officially became the team's starting right fielder. Cody Ross, who was slated to start in right, will begin the season on the disabled list with an injured right calf.

"I'm going to be tearing up the rest of the year in right field with my legs," Huff joked, as reporters surrounded Belt.

Huff was one of a long line of veterans who dropped by Belt's locker to shake his hand and congratulate him on making the team.

"He's done everything right in spring," Huff said. "He's a great guy. ... He's a real quiet, humble kid. A lot of inner confidence."...

Belt, a fifth-round pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Texas, had a meteoric rise to the big leagues. He hit a combined .352 with 112 RBIs and 23 homers last year with stops at Class A San Jose, Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Fresno. He hit .282 with three homers and 13 RBIs this spring.

He'll make his big league debut against Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, a player he faced in high school in Lufkin, Texas.

"This is an unbelievable feeling right now," Belt said. "Almost doesn't seem real. I've got a lot of emotions right now I'm trying to contain.

"I've been thinking about it, pretty much my entire life, and it all came to a head today. Like I said, it's just surreal. I don't know what's going on right now. I'm just trying to process this whole thing. Hopefully it will go well."

Bochy hinted on Tuesday that Belt might make the team, but he said the news seemed to stun the rookie on Wednesday.

"When you have a guy like Belt and you're able to give him great news, and see what it meant to him, it's special," Bochy said. "He was a little floored, I think, very excited, but also a little overwhelmed with the fact that he's in the big leagues. It's your dream, and he's very, very excited about this. But he's earned this. He makes us a better club with what happened with Ross. We wanted to break with the best club, and right now we feel having Brandon on the club makes us that."

so i just watched the Giants get their rings, pretty cool stuff. it showed the visitors dugout and you see Tony La Russa watching. i know he lives in the East Bay so his heart seems to still be in San Francisco.

a few more things about the ring ceremony. the Giants brought back four of their living Hall of Famers, with two not able to make it. there was nothing about Berry Bonds whatsoever, i thought he would be there. they brought in Hall of Famers from the 49's, Raiders, Warriors and the A's to throw out the first pitch. Lincemum ran out to the field to shake Reggie Jackson hand, then Steve Young shook Timmy hand. Sammy Hagar sung God Bless America and stunk.

as i said before it sucks getting drilled at home plate, although i also played hockey so i was used to getting hit and it didn't happen all that often. what was worse was getting foul balls off your legs, arms, head, feet and balls.

i watched that play live last night and didn't think it was going to be a season ending injury. Wow, that is really bad news. this team has no offence, as they must be close to last in runs scored. losing our big man in the heart of the order is going to be the big blow of losing him. yes he controls our pitching staff but it's the bat we will miss more.

This team is done. They performed well above their heads for the first 2 months considering the injuries (panda, wilson, torres, ross, zito, de rosa, etc.) but with the loss of Buster I don't really see how they can fill in his 3-headed role (bat, game-calling, defense). When I heard about the injury, I was anxious to see how this happened. Buster put himself in such a bad position. First of all, my catchers don't sit in front of home plate. They stand away from home plate and work back to the plate. But we (catchers) are just fair game. You've got a guy running around third base at 210 to 220 pounds with 3 percent body fat and with sprinter's speed. I teach my kids to stay away from the plate when you don't have the ball so the runner actually sees home plate and his thought is, slide. But Buster is laying in front of home plate, and it's like having a disabled car in the middle of a four-lane highway. You're just going to get smacked. Show them the plate. You can always catch the ball and step, or step and catch the ball, as long as you've got the runner on the ground. And if you have the runner on the ground, there's less chance of any severe collision.

The Giants on Thursday hopscotched their best catching prospect, 21-year-old Hector Sanchez, from Class A San Jose to Triple-A Fresno, where he will catch the majority of games and be tutored by manager Steve Decker, who gave Buster Posey a crash course in catching. Sanchez hit .301 with an .832 OPS in San Jose, where he shared the job.

The Giants want to see what they have in Sanchez before making a deal. It's not far-fetched to consider a catcher that young jumping from San Jose to the majors in the same season. Pablo Sandoval began 2008 in San Jose and was in San Francisco by Aug. 14, three days after he turned 22.

Sabean called Sanchez "a legitimate prospect. He's a very mature kid and he can swing the bat. What better place to get a baptism by fire?"

One of the bloggers on the Yahoo sites was saying that Ramon Hernandez would be a good guy for the Giants to maybe go and get from the Reds to cover catching this year. He's on a 1 year extension, so there is no long contract. Hernandez has been pretty solid for the Reds, but I will say he seems to play better when he doesn't have to catch 'every game'. It works out well platooning him with Ryan Hanigan in a 60/40 kind of setup. The Reds have a big bat catching prospect named Yasmani Grandal that is ripping it up at Louisville, so moving Hernandez would open a slot for him.

Devin Mesoraco is the catching prospect at Louisville. Grandal was the Reds first round pick last year and another catching prospect, but he is at A ball.

I think Ivan Rodriguez would be the logical fill-in for the G's.

Burriss, unfortunately, makes too many mistakes to be at this level. he is pretty bad on defense and just an OK hitter. he is only playing because we lost Freddy Sanchez.

in other words, Mike Fontenot will get the bulk of the playing time when he get off the DL. Manny Burriss might become a good player some day but it hasn't happen this year.

Burriss's fielding stats aren't bad at all. He hasn't hit but neither has anyone else on that team.

As you may have figured out I'm no fan of the Giants, but Vogelsong has had a fantastic 2011. I've got no problem with his selection.

Then stole a base, got moved over, then got called out trying to advance home on a passed ball. Oh Foamfingerpaws.
