btw I don't want to jinx this (the Brewers have not won a playoff series in my life) but I can't imagine they don't have a huge pitching advantage here

frogbs, Thursday, 29 September 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

they also have a HUGE 1B advantage.

Brewers in 5. Guessing here. Honestly know nothing about these two teams.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 September 2011 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

D'Backs should have a small pitching advantage Game 1, but Games 2 and 3 should be Milwaukee. Both offenses are quite similar, though Milwaukee has a better 3-4-5. Plus Milwaukee easily has the better bullpen. Still should be a good series, really hoping for a Brewtown sweep!!

frogbs, Friday, 30 September 2011 13:14 (fourteen years ago)

I want to root for the brewers to go all the way but that left side of the infield is a black hole. Their defense cant be good on the whole either.. #secretsauce

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 30 September 2011 13:43 (fourteen years ago)

Believe it or not, McGehee is actually a plus defender this year. Yuni B still sucks though. Honestly the defense isn't as bad as we'd thought it would be (worst in the league), Hairston is probably gonna get a lot of playing time and does well at any position, and Counsell is still one of the best utility men in the league (though he really cannot hit anymore). In the outfield, both Nyjer Morgan and Carlos Gomez are great defenders (Gomez may actually be the best CF in the league right now)

Can't vouch for the rest of those guys though

frogbs, Friday, 30 September 2011 13:47 (fourteen years ago)

How dumb was it to let Kennedy pitch to Fielder in that situation, especially with a base open? That's one of those managerial decisions that shows you don't deserve to win the series.

Dbacks are fucked now that collmenter is the last line of defense

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 3 October 2011 05:43 (fourteen years ago)

Collmenter shut down the Crew last time though

I do agree though, Kennedy/Gallardo was their best matchup. Hope they can sweep and rest their starters for the NLCS. Any team facing Grienke/Gallardo/Marcum twice each is going to have problems, Phillies or not (though I'm hoping not)

frogbs, Monday, 3 October 2011 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

How dumb was it to let Kennedy pitch to Fielder in that situation, especially with a base open? That's one of those managerial decisions that shows you don't deserve to win the series.

Not dumb at all considering Weeks was up next. Fielder's not better than Weeks by enough to justify the IBB. It seems like one of those decisions that only comes up because it didn't work out.

frogbs, Monday, 3 October 2011 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

Rob Neyer thought what wd've worked out was a new pitcher.

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 October 2011 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

At the postgame press conference, Gibson realized he had set himself up to be second-gussed, and he confessed his mistake after barely being prompted.

"I left him in, it was a bad decision on my part obviously," Gibson said softly. He must have been seething on the inside.

"Ultimately that's what he wanted to do, and it was my decision to let him do it that way," he said. "It didn't work out."

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Monday, 3 October 2011 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

Kennedy was terse, angry, disappointed. Maybe it's because manager Kirk Gibson let him make the decision to face Prince Fielder, and Kennedy chose poorly. Or maybe he's just an extremely sore loser, which explains why he wins so often.

Either way, he took a shot at Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who fisted an RBI single to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning. At the time, pitcher Yovani Gallardo was in the on-deck circle.

"It was a guy who can't really hit and Gallardo can swing it a little bit," Kennedy said. "There was no thought at all for me at least."

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Monday, 3 October 2011 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

Rob Neyer thought what wd've worked out was a new pitcher.

mathematically, it's close once you figure out platoon splits, but it still doesn't work out. the only way you can really justify it is if you figure that getting the out gives you Hairston/Betancourt/Lucroy next inning instead of Weeks leading off. either way it's super close, not "clearly wrong" as sportswriters are putting it.

frogbs, Monday, 3 October 2011 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

If it's the regular season, then you might leave Kennedy in. But in the playoffs every game is too important so you have to manage against the worst case scenario, which in this case was Fielder hitting the ball out of the park and basically ending the game. And if you're going to carry 500 pitchers on your playoff roster, then facing the other team's best power hitter down two in the 7th on the road when your starter is obviously tiring would be a good time to make a pitching change.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 3 October 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

kennedy is such a dick

with the yankees, he would get rocked and afterwards be all like, nah, i pitched well f u

mookieproof, Monday, 3 October 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

wait a minute I totally misread that thing I quoted
I'm not sure if the D'Backs really have a good lefty to bring into a situation like that

frogbs, Monday, 3 October 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

well a tiring kennedy is not the solution, so a fresh righty or lefty is probably the best bet, regardless of how much "better" thay are than ipk. ipk is still a soft tossing control guy, remember.

Waxahachie Swap (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 3 October 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

btw I didn't mean to misrepresent Neyer -- he thought Gibson mighta done the best thing. I'm not convinced.

Marcum and Wolf look like crap in this series. Finesse pitchers comin to az to die.

this fucker is gonna take 4 hours

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 6 October 2011 02:55 (fourteen years ago)

As a Jays fan I really wanted to see Marcum doing well in his first postseason start, but a 3:3 K:BB ratio for me speaks of him being off his game.
His K:BB has always been high, and game to game he seems to need a good ratio to win, keeping those guys off base. It's true for every pitcher, but that's just what I've observed over the years.

francisF, Thursday, 6 October 2011 04:28 (fourteen years ago)

Is it fair to want teams that are at relatively full strength to win? I mean, I'd like to see Wainwright for STL and Drew for ARI in there, but because they're not, I'm favouring their opponents

francisF, Thursday, 6 October 2011 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

why would you root against a team because they have players injured?

(unless you are planning ahead and need a fully stocked team to beat the yankees/phillies, of course)

mookieproof, Thursday, 6 October 2011 04:34 (fourteen years ago)

I think that's pretty much the reason - a subconscious desire to have a full-strength team take down the Yankees.

The tbs guys seem to think Gibson switching Roberts and Young in the lineup meant something. Thought them hitting back-to-back HRs tonight would've shut them up about that, but no

francisF, Thursday, 6 October 2011 04:47 (fourteen years ago)

was not expecting the D-backs coming back to tie this series

Bee OK, Thursday, 6 October 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

Definitely didn't expect this series to go five. Have there ever been three Game 5's in the LDS in one year?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 6 October 2011 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

Was wondering how the heck Randy Wolfe was chosen to start this game. Is it usual for a team to start their 4th guy in a five-game series?

francisF, Thursday, 6 October 2011 07:11 (fourteen years ago)

I just talked about Marcum, I don't know what my brain is thinking. I thought I heard Wolf was starting before the game began, my head is stuck in an alternate reality right now, haha
I digress.

francisF, Thursday, 6 October 2011 07:17 (fourteen years ago)

OOOOOOohh, I'm just stuck in yesterday. The blowouts/workdays are blurring together

francisF, Thursday, 6 October 2011 07:21 (fourteen years ago)

Was wondering how the heck Randy Wolfe was chosen to start this game. Is it usual for a team to start their 4th guy in a five-game series?

it happens all the time - AJ Burnett, Porcello, and Oswalt have also started playoff games

john axford really is not good, i have no idea how he hasn't blown a save since april

he strikes out 10.5/9 and has an ERA under 2. he's pretty good.

did the Brew Crew just win the WS? you would think so by the celebrations..

give 'em a break, this is their first playoff series win in nearly three decades, most of those guys have no playoff experience whatsoever. hell Nyjer Morgan's been stuck on last place teams his whole life so I don't blame him for being jacked up
