Bring Valdez in to shut the door.

Mordy, Sunday, 2 October 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

boom

dayo, Sunday, 2 October 2011 00:04 (fourteen years ago)

too early to make any kind of firm statement but so far it looks like jayson stark was right about pitching on short rest-- generally a terrible idea

Mordy, Monday, 3 October 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)

well, there's a reason why players aren't routinely throwing on 3 days rest, but plenty of pitchers have done it in the postseason or end of the season and been successful

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 October 2011 00:52 (fourteen years ago)

bases loaded + howard at the plate

Mordy, Monday, 3 October 2011 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

TLR tried it to terrible results in '04.

very public (bnw), Monday, 3 October 2011 00:54 (fourteen years ago)

xp, that's not true tho! i mean, sometimes it has worked out, but not plenty of times
http://espn.go.com/mlb/blog/_/name/stark_jayson/id/7050258/the-perils-starting-short-rest-october

http://i54.tinypic.com/anznt0.png

Mordy, Monday, 3 October 2011 00:55 (fourteen years ago)

and the article reminds u, those are all aces (bc why short rest a non-ace)

Mordy, Monday, 3 October 2011 00:55 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's pretty hard to tell either way, unless the pitcher explicitly says "it was a bad idea" -- guys have bad starts on full days rest too \(o_O)/

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 October 2011 00:56 (fourteen years ago)

for sure, but look at those general results. they're terribly bad.

Mordy, Monday, 3 October 2011 00:56 (fourteen years ago)

carpenter is obviously not up to the task in any case

Mordy, Monday, 3 October 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

mookieproof, Monday, 3 October 2011 02:01 (fourteen years ago)

Carp was a mess but the Cards are somehow back in it. The Phillies were probably a pitch away from knocking out Carpenter in the second.

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Monday, 3 October 2011 02:18 (fourteen years ago)

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Monday, 3 October 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

that had to have been a decoy so that they would pitch to jay

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 October 2011 02:33 (fourteen years ago)

The plays by Furcal and Chris Young tonight were two of the best I've ever seen in the postseason.

This really underscores how difficult (or maybe improbable) it is to win a World Series. All that stuff I'd read (I think you'd find a bit of it here if you checked back) about how the Phillies were sure things once they signed Lee was always crazy. A zillion things can go wrong in a season, even one where almost everything goes right. Tonight it was Chris Carpenter.

Playoffs are dumb? Are you suggesting they go back to how it was in 1968, one league winner and straight to the World Series (which was fine when you had eight- and ten-team leagues), or that there be no postseason at all? If you're just pointing out that what would appear to be the best teams don't always win, well, yes--that's what makes the postseason compelling. Dumb, I don't get.

When Howard made the last out, the place let loose with boos. It was a Philadelphia's cover version of the angry serenade Yankees fans gave to their team and their highest-paid star, Alex Rodriguez.

Like I was sayin'... the bad guys got screwed. Dance!

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

You don't think the Phillies had a/an historic pitching staff? Or at the very least, a/an historic front three (or all five starters)? Outside of Halladay I'm completely indifferent to the team, and I'd concede that point.

clemenza, Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I think that pitching staff was pretty historic, but wtf @ Phillies fans for booing Ryan Howard, you guys don't deserve anything

frogbs, Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

They had an historic pitching staff.

The Phillies had the lowest team ERA but were third in strikeouts and didn't have the lowest BAA, either. You need more than that to be historic, right? Or is he referring to the talent of the rotation?

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know what his barometer is, but I quickly checked the total WAR for Halladay/Lee/Hamels against Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz in '95, and the Phillies were higher. And no one in the Phillies front five was lower than 1.7--I don't know how many teams you could find with a front five where that's true. (Listen to me, Mr. WAR.) I don't know...to get a little more old-school, they felt historic to me.

clemenza, Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

the thing about this phillies staff is that this is prob the best that they're going to be -- first of all they were all pretty much healthy this year, secondly altho doc, lee and hamels might repeat their years next season, it's highly doubtful that worley or even oswalt will be better

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

also if you're going by WAR, the 03 yankees & 02 d backs staffs both were equal, and the 97 braves were better

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

not that i necessarily disagree w/ you clemenza, just saying

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

Not that it matters, but by my calculations--I'm using Baseball Reference--all the teams you mentioned had a WAR from their front three of less than the Phillies' 19.6 this year. (The '02 Diamondbacks were basically Ruth, Gehrig, and three mediocrities.) I'm sure you can find some front threes that topped the Phillies, though. But I do think it would be hard to find a rotation five-deep where the fifth starter was as good as Worley.

clemenza, Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

The '98 Braves are an interesting comparison. Their front five went 18-9, 20-6, 16-11, 17-8, and 17-3; three had ERAs under 3.00, one in the mid-3.00s, and one slightly above 4.00. (This was the McGwire/Sosa year.) Whether you do top three (19-6 > 13.7), top four (21.3 > 14.3), or top five (24.1 > 17.5), though--the order based on number of starts--the Phillies always beat them in WAR. And the '98 Braves were ESPN's pick a few years ago as the greatest rotation ever.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=list/greatestrotations

(One thing you can say about the '98 Braves that I'm pretty sure won't be true of this year's Phillies is that they had three Hall of Famers starting--two for sure, and very likely Smoltz too.)

clemenza, Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 8 October 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

Isn't Oswalt a free agent after this year? Not sure what kind of contract he'll want, but letting him walk and going with Lee/Doc/Hamels/Worley should be plenty good enough to keep them competitive. They've got to save money somewhere -- Howard's extension starts next year! Their lineup needs an overhaul though, they're too old and slump-prone.
