Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

still holding out hope that the yankees' rotation blows up in their faces

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

Verlander-Sabathia not the match-up that Halladay-Lincecum was last year, but still pretty great.

clemenza, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

det's got arguably the best pitcher and definitely the best hitter in the series. fister's been maybe the best pitcher in the game over the past month (41.2 IP, 40 K, 3(!) BB, 0.65 ERA, 0.53 whip.) martinez, peralta, and avila are good so i think offensively the tigers are a little closer to the yanks than a lot of people might imagine. if fister keeps it up and verlander dominates i think it's the tigers in 5.

omar little, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

How is Detroit's middle relief?

Benoit: very effective since a rough start.

Alburquerque: K/9 is almost 14 with a wicked slider.

Schlereth: still has the serious control issues.

Perry: terrble.

Pauley: lousy as a Tiger.

Coke: nu Grilli (either excellent or terrible, with the latter slightly more likely).

Not great overall. I have a feeling Porcello is going to get shelled, and that the bullpen won't fare much better that night. Fairly confident that Verlander, Fister, and Scherzer will do very well or hold their own. If I'm not mistaken, the Yankees have had trouble with Scherzer.

Tigers in five.

Y in 4

Waxahachie Swap (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 29 September 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

I don't trust either of these teams to get it done in crunch time but I'll be rooting for Det to send NY to meet the Red Sox on the 2011 lolf course, probably in five games.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 30 September 2011 05:50 (fourteen years ago)

i think the narrative here is going to be TIGERS MUST WIN GAME 1 but honestly i think they're in just as good if not better position to win the series w/o winning game 1

and if verlander goes all cliff lee than the yanks are fucked

tigers/rangers ALCS wouldn't shock me in the slightest

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Friday, 30 September 2011 06:16 (fourteen years ago)

if verlander throws 8 shutout innings in game 1 and the tigers win 4-1 the yankees are staking their season on starts by hughes/garca/colon/nova???? yikes

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Friday, 30 September 2011 06:18 (fourteen years ago)

Tigers in 4. Yankees pitching is awful.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 September 2011 12:47 (fourteen years ago)

I mean other than CC obv.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 September 2011 12:48 (fourteen years ago)

i doubt the Yanks would be using a 5-man rotation.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 30 September 2011 13:41 (fourteen years ago)

Last I read, Girardi was going with Sabathia, Nova, Garcia.

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Friday, 30 September 2011 13:43 (fourteen years ago)

that could be more than enough, or it could be a complete disaster

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Friday, 30 September 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

Predicting at least one Granderson-Schlereth match-up that results in a (Yankee Stadium) HR, btw.

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Friday, 30 September 2011 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

how could a team be in better position to win a 5 game series down 0-1?

k3vin k., Friday, 30 September 2011 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

i meant a better position than the yankees if they were to lose

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Friday, 30 September 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah i could see that

k3vin k., Friday, 30 September 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

Totally looking forward to sitting down and watching tonight's game. Hope the final score's 1-0. (Normally I'd root for the Tigers to win this Series, and if that's what happens, great--but I would like to see the Rays beat the Yankees in an ALCS.)

Two plays where it didn't look like #Tigers infielders had a good grip on the ball. They've been aggressive on plays like that lately.

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 1 October 2011 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

Jay Jaffe:

Last night, friend of BP (and partner in Pinstriped Bible crime) Cliff Corcoran and I chatted about the series, as he had previewed it for SI.com while I delivered here. The way the rotations lined up, we agreed that the number of games the series went would likely dictate who won; in a three- or five-game series, the edge was with Detroit, with the Yankees' best shot to do it in four behind Sabathia's early return on three days' rest. Now, with Burnett almost certain to start, this has to be considered a blow to the Yankees. There aren't many pinstriped partisans who can feel confident about a four-game series going their team's way anymore.

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 1 October 2011 13:31 (fourteen years ago)

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Sunday, 2 October 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

Cabrera ranging too close to second has been a "constant theme for the Tigers this year." Probably the first time I've seen it happen all season. It was a problem when Cabrera first converted from third, though (years ago).

Parking pro tip for Thermo: Southbound Woodward, near the the park, take a left on Widner. Take Widner past the next cross street, John R. Park on Widner between John R. and Brush. It's free. A gentleman might come out of the abandoned building on the block and approach you, but he is friendly (though sometimes silent). It won't hurt to give him a few bucks. Walk three blocks south on Brush, turn right on Montcalm, enter the park through the the beer hall to avoid lines. Easy in, easy out, not much traffic.

Enjoy!

Asked if he was still absolutely committed to starting A.J. Burnett in Tuesday night's Game 4 of the ALDS if the New York Yankees happened to lose Game 3 to the Detroit Tigers and Justin Verlander, manager Joe Girardi's response was practically inaudible.

"Yeah," Girardi said. "I mean, who am I going to go to? Mo (Mariano Rivera)?"

..."I think A.J. is going to take the mentality of, 'I have to pitch well,' no matter where the series is, I do," Girardi said. "The one thing about A.J. is he's never backed down from a challenge. This is a guy that's always went out there and taken the ball and said, 'I'm gonna do the best I can.' And that's what he'll do."

But Girardi conceded that if Burnett runs into trouble early in the game, "I could have a very short leash (on him)."

http://mlb.sbnation.com/2011/10/5/2471149/just-how-good-is-curtis-grandersons-defense

There have been numerous ideas put forth trying to explain the discrepancy between Granderson's perceived ability and the results in the advanced metrics. The one that makes the most sense is positioning, as pointed out by the Wall Street Journal's Dan Barbarisi in August: Granderson plays to right-center, rather than straight-center, thanks to the presence of Brett Gardner, one of the more ridiculous left fielders you'll see. Gardner takes balls away from Granderson, and while those lost plays don't exactly count against Granderson, they are plays that simply aren't available for him to make -- something that would hurt his numbers, as the creator of FRAA, Colin Wyers, says:

A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)
