Manager Ron Washington filled out the rest of his four-man rotation behind C.J. Wilson, who on Wednesday was announced as the Game 1 starter. Just as it was in the AL Division Series, Derek Holland will pitch Game 2 and be followed by Colby Lewis and Matt Harrison.
Rotation change for Tigers:
Meanwhile, Leyland announced that after Justin Verlander starts Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, Max Scherzer will start Game 2, Doug Fister will start Game 3 and Rick Porcello will go in Game 4.

It is starting to feel like it's the Tigers' year. The Rangers have been the forgotten team of the playoffs, which is I guess what happens the year *after* you make team history by finally winning a postseason series. I would rather see the Tigers win, but I have a feeling the Rangers will somehow sneak through in six.

You see what I see? If you believe PITCHf/x -- and from what I've noticed, whatever tool FOX is using -- Verlander's lost six strikes that were inside the strike zone, while gaining none that were outside the zone. When you think about the fine line between success and failure for a pitcher in the major leagues, you might guess how damaging that could be, having a six-strike deficit in just three innings.

to clarify:
Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a comprehensive chart of every player who has hit a (super) walk off grand slam. Super? Well if we only counted walk off grand slams the event would not be as rare as people think:
From 1950 though 2011 there were more than one-hundred seventy instances of players hitting a walk off-grand slam!
So to make it "super" Baseball Almanac lists below players on the home team who came to the plate and hit a grand slam when trailing by three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning (except one, which happened in the 10th inning), thus winning the game, and hitting a truly super walk off grand slam.

Keith Law BlogMariners come out ahead on Fister deal July, 31, 2011Jul 312:49 PM ET
Seattle really made out like a bandit here, converting two pitchers whose value came in large part due to their home park and Seattle's great defense into three known prospects and reportedly a fourth who might be the best or second-best guy in the deal. Detroit gets a little depth in its rotation but gives up more value than it gets back.
Doug Fister doesn't throw hard, topping out at about 92 on his four-seamer and 89-90 on his two-seamer, but throws both pitches for strikes. He generates a lot of foul balls when he throws the two-seamer in the zone but rarely gets swings and misses on either fastball when he throws them for strikes. Instead, he rarely walks hitters and "trusts his defense," code for a pitcher who can't miss many bats because he doesn't have an above-average pitch.

Typically, the Tigers sell game-used bases as memorabilia. But that is no way to treat the hero of ALCS Game 5.Actually, there were varying theories within the organization about how Third Base should be honored. The plan actually changed following Schmakel’s initial instruction to the Major League Baseball authenticator after the game.Cabrera, approached in the clubhouse, insisted that he hadn’t requested it. “Talk to Lamont!” Cabrera called out, smiling. Lamont confirmed that, yes, he asked for the base but clarified that he didn’t want it for himself.“For the team,” Lamont said. “Between that and Victor hitting a triple, standing on there, that’s quite a bag.”Tigers manager Jim Leyland had his own designs, telling reporters after the game, “I have that bag in my office right now, and that will be in my memorabilia room at some point in my life. I can promise you.”He may have to wait awhile.Around the time Leyland made those remarks, team owner Mike Ilitch sent word that he wants Third Base for the sports archive he maintains at the Fox Theatre — across the street from Comerica Park. Since Ilitch has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to ensure that the Tigers are good enough to play in a thrilling ALCS such as this, I’m guessing he’ll get his wish.
