Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 13:18 (thirteen years ago)

South Korean officials have sent a letter of protest to Major League Baseball (MLB) accusing the Baltimore Orioles of breaking protocols in signing 17-year-old schoolboy pitcher Kim Seong-min.

Supposedly in the state college game the orioles minor leaguers were pitching and the position players were from state college. Then again, they still lost.

i wish they were not permitted to bring up all their triple-a relievers tomorrow

mookieproof, Sunday, 6 May 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know the intricacies of the orioles rotation, but

you've got a three-run lead in the 17th and you've already gotten away with one inning from your first baseman. is a starter *really* not available to pitch an inning? a win is a win

mookieproof, Monday, 7 May 2012 00:36 (thirteen years ago)

matusz was in the pen iirc but he's scheduled to go tomorrow and we're already going to be out of relievers, so

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Monday, 7 May 2012 00:37 (thirteen years ago)

The SI game report says that the last time two position players pitched in the same game was 1925: Ty Cobb and George Sisler.

clemenza, Monday, 7 May 2012 02:46 (thirteen years ago)

kinda wonder why teams never take a dive rather than play 17-inning games - I'd think that you're probably improving your chances of winning over the next several games by not using every single pitcher on your staff and wearing out your position players

I'd think that you're probably improving your chances of winning over the next several games by not using every single pitcher on your staff and wearing out your position players

I disagree with that - first of all, they didn't use any starters (which they definitely could have and actually probably should have after they got the lead), and secondly, getting a W is really important, much more than not getting the best out of your relievers over the next few days

guess it's Honker Burger tonight...#fml (frogbs), Monday, 7 May 2012 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, you can get tomorrow's win in all kindsa nutty ways too

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Monday, 7 May 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

patton only pitched a third of an inning. i'm guessing he'll get the bulk of the relief innings tonight if matusz can't get far.

it's worrisome that we don't have another off day for two and a half weeks though.

At what point do you think it’s possible that you could enter a game and pitch?:

“I didn’t actually ever think that would be possible. And Buck [Showalter] didn’t tell me until literally about two minutes before I ran out across the field to the bullpen. It was one of those games that was so crazy, you just wanted it to get over. You just wanted to win it and get out of there. I’m glad we were able to get the win.”

What pops into your head when Buck says that to you?:

“Buck was like, ‘Hey Chris, you got a glove?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I do.’ He was like, ‘Besides your first baseman’s glove?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ve got a third base glove.’ He’s like, ‘All right, well, grab it and go down to the bullpen and get warmed up. If we go ahead, J.J.’s still in. If not, you’re going in.’ I was like, ‘Sweeet!’ I ran up into the clubhouse and ripped my wrist tape off and almost ran out to the bullpen without a hat.”

Is it true you struck out Jarrod Saltalamacchia?:

“On three pitches. … At first I was just trying to get my bearings straight. I didn’t want to hurt myself and I wanted to keep us in the game. I didn’t want to just go out there and be a joke. I looked up and he was walking to the dish and I was like, ‘Oh yeah.’ I love Salty, but I wanted to strike him out and he would’ve done the same thing to me. I threw two fastballs to him and then Wieters put down a wiggle and I’m like, ‘I think that means split, so I’m going to throw it.’ I ended up throwing a pretty good one and he wouldn’t even look at me the next inning when I came to the plate.”

You also struck out Adrian Gonzalez, one of the best hitters in the game. Walk us through that:

“At first I was just trying to stay away from him because … there were two runners on and I didn’t want him to end up winning the game. My ball always has run on it, even when I play catch. … When I’m trying to pitch, it makes it even worse because I’m trying to not make it do that. I threw one inside and it kind of came back over the plate and he fouled it off and I had two strikes. … I wasn’t even thinking about striking him out, but I just took a little bit off a fastball because pitchers have done that to me in the past and it really works and it worked out in my favor.”

According to a 2010 Baltimore Sun article, Orioles fans have embraced this tacky tradition since the mid-1970s. In 1993, Sun sports columnist emeritus John Steadman “considered the shouting a ‘repulsive act,’ ” suggesting at one point in his half-century career that the Orioles should forfeit any game at which the “OH” was shouted rather than sung. What Steadman, who took God’s buyout in 2001, failed to realize was how unnecessary his stand was; Angelos owned the team, meaning they were going to lose those games anyway.

"Sometimes you wonder if the umpires are just trying to get out of there," said Teixeira, who had argued a strike three call in the eighth. "They don't want you to make a comeback. They want to go home because those were terrible calls. It is what it is. We are out there fighting. I'm out there playing on one leg. I wish it had gone my way."

It's kind of amazing that Buck Showalter and Davey Johnson are shoo-ins for manager of the year (*checks calendar to be sure it's not still 1995*).

OK, maybe not a shoo-in, but the Orioles making the playoffs would be a bigger story (and bigger accomplishment) because of their division.
