wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

I think the stats are by TH's SABR friend?

The funniest thing I read by a saberhater on another board was that WAR was "a made-up stat."

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

sox's home opener is friday the 13th

war is kind of a made-up stat? and fangraphs and bref made it up differently?

mookieproof, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

ross slugs .563 career vs lefties, if they have a strict L/R platoon split b/w him & sweeney, ross could get somewhere in the neighborhood of .550 slugging when he's got the monster to play with

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 April 2012 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

not that i would bet on it, but it's not insane

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 April 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

Thx, M. I realized I could have just consulted the old Google but saw the thread and figured someone would know. Friday the 13th, tho? Ruh-roh.

I guess I thought all stats were "made up" when someone invented them.

DJP, you can confirm the common rumor that the singer(s) always do(es) a recording first, then either lip-sync or do not.

This Red Sox/Rays conflict began when Moore drilled Gonzalez for saying he was going to hit a home run? Didn't Gonzalez say he was going to hit a home run as a reaction to writers asking him about his struggles? It's not like he said "That piece of shit Matt Moore, who plays for a team I hate in a dump of a stadium -- I am going hit a home run off him."

Some hitter should say "I am going to get on base four times" and see what happens.

Continue the old baseball, sensitive players.

ESPN’s T.J. Quinn reports on Twitter that Byrd’s positive test came for a drug used to deal with the side effects of steroids, not a performance-enhancing drug itself.

J0rdan S., Monday, 25 June 2012 21:32 (thirteen years ago)

this made me laugh:

Kevin Youkilis is one of the most oddly shaped human beings in professional athletics. His torso is giant and cylindrical — he looks like a cartoon poor person wearing a barrel. He is completely bald — like, aggressively bald, like he hates hair — except for a fiery red goatee bush that tumbles out of his face like Play-Doh from a fun factory. When he hits, he stands with his feet so close together the ump could tip him over with one quick index-finger jab to the sternum — an action that must have been tempting for many umps over the years — and as he raises the bat above his head and aims the barrel back toward the pitcher in a manner any Little League coach would surely curtail ("No, Kevin, not like that, that's all wrong … just … is your dad here? I need to talk to him"), his hands are a foot apart on the handle of the bat, and he then slowly slides them toward each other as the pitcher moves through his delivery. It's fucking insane. ("Kevin? Buddy? Hands together, buddy. See? Like this? … Is your dad here?") From this stevedore's frame, alopecic head, and just completely goofy stance came a truly elite ballplayer. Who is also kind of a dick.

For a guy who's never won a playoff series, Adrian Gonzalez seems to have a lot of opinions.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

that's mentioned in the comments up there.

Peter Abraham, Globe:

The Red Sox have become accustomed to losing. With a few exceptions, most of the players shrug their shoulders and go about their business. That business, with few exceptions, is not winning baseball games....

John Lackey and Carl Crawford are obviously uncomfortable in Boston and it has affected their play. If Adrian Gonzalez was indeed the ringleader against Valentine — and he didn't deny Passan's charge that he was — that speaks poorly about his character, too. It is worth noting that Valentine was a staunch defender of Gonzalez in the spring when the first baseman was hitting .256 and going weeks between home runs.

Josh Beckett, hailed as the leader of the pitching staff when he was signed to a huge extension, has been anything but. Unless, of course, the Red Sox wanted their pitchers led by somebody who doesn't seem to much care what happens to the team.

It's telling that earlier this season, Valentine pulled Clay Buchholz aside and advised him to be his own man and not to follow the example set by others.

Then again, you might be doing him a favor. Then he can sit around for a season, collect on his contract and not worry about winning. In that sense, he would be just like the players he was given to manage."

Kind of amazing how many dumb/whiny quotes could be avoided by stat knowledge. Seems apparent that, given the way his quote begins, that he was asked something like, "What took your power away?" (San Diego slugging percentage: .514; Boston slugging percentage: .513.)

Andy K, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 14:58 (twelve years ago)

A-Gonz isn't a bum but had a ~.725 OPS for the first half of the season. That's pretty rough for a $21mn-per 1B and when it lasts that long it remains in the public's memory even if you start hitting again (as A-Gonz has).

An X-ray taken before Monday night’s 10-2 loss to the Yankees revealed that Pedroia suffered an avulsion fracture of his left ring finger, a team source has confirmed to the Herald. Thus, Pedroia won’t play in the Red Sox’ final two games.

break finger in meaningless game? DEFINITION OF SCRAPPY

Valentine on Big Show: Do you think all your coaches have been loyal to you? 'No.' Have they undermine you. 'Yes.'

mookieproof, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago)

@DKnobler
Asked what he would have done differently, Bobby said: "I would not have made the Youkilis comment."

Andy K, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago)

@JonHeymanCBS

#redsox plan to fire Valentine soon after season ends. "no comment,'' responds Ben Cherington.

No. of times Bobby Valentine's teams finished 4th or worse: 8. No. of times they have finished first: 0.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago)

MLB teams, obviously

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:28 (twelve years ago)

he did win a pennant in Flushing, and usta be fine the first few years with low-expectations teams. Nothing left, it appears.

kizz my hairy irish azz (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago)

aaaann.. he's done. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/05/sports/baseball/red-sox-fire-bobby-valentine-after-one-season.html

@Ben_ESPN
On Bobby V inquiries: We're happy with our current roster of MLB commentators and haven't discussed options for 2013 at this time.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago)

amazing to think that none of this would have happened if not for game 162 last year.

sanskrit, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago)

well it was a fait accompli w/ "my coaches undermined me," you don't say that unless you know yer done.

kizz my hairy irish azz (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:56 (twelve years ago)

Maybe Japan will have him back, but I can't but think he's crapped in his own cistern Stateside.

Death Grits 2 (WmC), Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago)

herald headline - that's a wrap! ?

johnny crunch, Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:59 (twelve years ago)

He kinda burned some bridges in Japan too. His owner fired him despite being beloved by the fans. Musta been something there.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 October 2012 17:59 (twelve years ago)

one of the most genuinely unlikable public figures i have ever witnessed.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:05 (twelve years ago)

well in his Mets days he LOVED pissing off dumb media guys on camera, so that went a long way with me.

kizz my hairy irish azz (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago)

bobby v is totes hilare imo

omar little, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:21 (twelve years ago)

he is arrogant, blunt, unfeeling about players' images sometimes, but all of that was ameliorated when you win. NAGL when the team crashes.

kizz my hairy irish azz (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:23 (twelve years ago)

he basically acted like a dumb media guy the entire time he was here. he did their jobs for them.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:25 (twelve years ago)

i just wish the yankees had inexplicably hired him tbh.

La Russa in 2013

sanskrit, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:37 (twelve years ago)

well, even the Mets didn't have to deal with the Boston media shark tank, unchanged since praising the cabbie who ran over Casey Stengel in the early '30s.

kizz my hairy irish azz (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:39 (twelve years ago)

the narrative is garbage and has been for years!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:42 (twelve years ago)

EVERY single nasty story about the 2012 sox was broken by a national writer!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:43 (twelve years ago)

ok, maybe so. I'm not disagreeing that he was no help and is done managing by any sane standard.
