Torre Turns Down Yankee Offer
The Yankees offered Manager Joe Torre a one-year deal with a base salary of $5 million and the chance to make another $3 million in performance bonuses. But after 12 years and 12 postseason appearances (including four World Series titles), Torre turned it down.
“We respect his decision. We appreciate everything he’s done. But it is now time for the New York Yankees to move forward, and we will be doing it very quickly,” team President Randy Levine said.
General Manager Brian Cashman said that Torre’s successor has not been named, nor have potential candidates been formally identified. “I can promise you that the process is going to take some time,” Cashman said. “I ask for everyone’s patience as we review the individuals and make recommendations to ownership.”

I don't think Hank Steinbrenner has what it takes to be the Boss. Too soft.
“The point is, the objective of the Yankees since the ’20s has been to win a championship every year, just like the objective of Lombardi with the Packers or Belichick with the Patriots,” Hank Steinbrenner said.
“Our goal is to win it every single year, even though we know, obviously, you can’t win it every single year. But nothing less than a championship is considered really acceptable.”

girardi hired as mgr
― max, Monday, 29 October 2007 17:23 (seventeen years ago)
good choice but im still way :-/ abt next season
i don't blame a-rod at all, esp when taking into account how meth-eyes giambi called him out last year for underperforming and not proving himself (and jeter and torre weren't really backing him up either), and no one came to his defense. compare it to jd drew, who sucked mightily most of the year but his teammate as far as i know never said anything against him. i thought this might happen, with a-rod having an awesome year, carrying the yankees much of the way, and then telling them to fuck off. i think it's kind of about the money but also kind of like, "oh now you like me? too little, too late!"
― omar little, Monday, 29 October 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago)
though a-rod is still a big douche, tbh.
yes, and a great player -- it'll be fun seeing him have a good postseason eventually (as Bonds did) and listen to the Stankee fans whine
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 29 October 2007 17:36 (seventeen years ago)
stankee on my hang-low
― am0n, Monday, 29 October 2007 17:37 (seventeen years ago)
fwiw i wish the yanks hadnt let a-rod go; he's had bad postseasons but so have most of the other hitters on the team--not to mention that if they had the kind of pitching that say cleveland (or boston) did/does, a-rods "choking" wld be less of an issue. and without him i dont know that the yanks wdve made the postseason this year.
― max, Monday, 29 October 2007 17:42 (seventeen years ago)
(i mean i know im just repeating conventional wisdom for non-fans at this point but there are plenty of us yankee fans who dont write letters to the post complaining or whatever)
Yanks can still choose to swallow some pride and sign the guy anyway. ARod/Boras have been really careful in not saying that they want out of New York. The Steinbrenners are the people making it ugly by preaching about loyalty, but really, what's the difference between this and any other player who becomes a free agent and wants to test the waters?
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 29 October 2007 17:58 (seventeen years ago)
Especially considering that they're throwing away 7-10 wins by letting ARod walk, which will probably be the difference between 1st and 3rd place in the AL East next year. It's not like there are tons of quality free agents on the market this year.
It'd be interesting though, if they traded for Santana, picked up another bat, and tried to win more through pitching/defense/speed. Ozzie Guillen would be proud!
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 29 October 2007 18:01 (seventeen years ago)
Girardi was the best choice out there but this is about as far from the 06 Fish as you can get.
― bnw, Monday, 29 October 2007 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

an additional $21.5M due from Texas that is now gone forever?
that's huge imo, basically a $8M/yr. fuck-you from Boras.
― Steve Shasta, Monday, 29 October 2007 18:29 (seventeen years ago)
I don't have a problem with A-Rod opting out. I would have opted out. But I wouldn't have filed the paperwork during the World Series.

― johnny crunch, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago)
I wish there was someway he could end up being the only player on one team, where his salary is all they can afford, so a-rod has to be like the starting pitcher, bat boy, hot dog vendor, etc.
― bnw, Monday, 29 October 2007 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

Former Cincinnati Reds player Pete Rose spoke with Mike Missanelli on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia and told a wild story about a trip he took to Vietnam in 1967 with baseball legend Joe DiMaggio.
Rose explained that when they were in the middle of the jungle, DiMaggio said he needed to take a shower.
"And the only way you can take a shower, Mike, is they have these big bamboo bags, like, and somebody's got to get on a chair and pour the water and pull a rawhide thing and the water comes through and the guy takes a shower," Rose said. "So I saw everything that Marilyn Monroe saw."
Rose went on to say that the best way to describe the former Yankee is that "he was a penis with a man hanging from it."

The eyes were red and moist. The voices were whispers and words failed to exit Jorge Posada’s mouth. Heads hung so low chins were almost on the dark clubhouse carpet in a room so quiet you could hear the mice burp.

i really wonder how the yanks will look in 2-3 seasons. a-rod looks almost finished. jeter had a solid '12 but it wasn't exactly great or even very good, just "good". tex is less giambi and more adam laroche now. granderson has a lot of holes in his game. swish, who knows? are they keeping ichiro? beyond sabathia (who knows how he'll look in a couple years w/his mileage and body type), the staff is iffy. these are all questions pondered before the last several years too but they looked and played like the worst playoff team in a very long time.
― omar little, Friday, 19 October 2012 19:46 (twelve years ago)
all the talk of a-rod being moved seems like hysterical NY media. Like, find me .280/20/100 (healthy caveats) or .260/15/100 @ 3rd base on the open market. yes, he is overpaid but that ship has sailed and you're not going to be able to move him unless you take back 3 heath bells, nevermind one.
jeter: the broken ankle thing will probably push him into sub-sub-replacement territory. it wouldn't shock me to see him hang it up next year if he goes off a cliff.
tex was a bad idea at the time and it looks even worse now. not sure what you do about it except take problem children back and hope for the best. I would think that he would be a more attractive trade target for a team than A-rod. i have no prospective targets to back that up. maybe chicago cubs?
a lot of talk about letting grandy go, but I could also see him replacing swish in RF and gardiner (lolhealthy?) in center. this is price-is-right stuff. Find me 40 HR on the open market etc.
I could see ichiro coming back on a make-good/stopgap contract until someone shakes loose in the minors a la eric chavez.
swish wants werth money lol
i would take kuroda back on a 2 yr contract w/ modest raise if he wanted it. everyone else besides he and CC can burn.
― Grimy Little Pimp (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 19 October 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago)
yeah forgot kuroda. great pickup. he's 38 or something though right? i can see him going for a couple more years at the same level.
what FAs are coming up that they have a shot at signing? i don't see them investing in josh hamilton.
