omg, one of the few things I got on the nose in my BP Predictatron ballot was this ALCS matchup! So I'm sticking with my March pick: Tribe in 6.

I honestly like both teams, but I think if Manny and Ortiz are due up late and close vs. Borowski, it could get real ugly real quick.

Red Sox in 6.

Go Tribe! I thought the game was over when a. the Indians didn't score with a runner in scoring position and one out in the top of the tenth and b. the Red Sox had Ortiz, Ramirez, and Lowell in the bottom of the tenth. So what happens? They go 1-2-3! Crazy.

every right-thinking person should hate the Red Sox.

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

When the alternative is the Yankees? I don't think so.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:01 (seventeen years ago)

sox r awes - theyve got big papi, green monster and a guy named coco crisp. also theyre from the city where i grew up.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

i pretty equally despise the bosox and yankees...theres enough hate to go around!

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:17 (seventeen years ago)

tragic forever before finally winning while completing the greatest comeback in the history of sports and now everybody hates them

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:20 (seventeen years ago)

i like the yankees but i don't hate the sox. it's too much work to actually hate a baseball team. besides the cubs, i mean.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:33 (seventeen years ago)

i hate the yankees - its pretty fun

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:34 (seventeen years ago)

i can see it being fun to hate the yankees though. i was thinking about this tonight, who can i hate on the sox? like, schilling, maybe, but i think he's hysterical. i can't hate anyone on that team. i can see people hating a-rod, jeter, etc etc etc though.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:36 (seventeen years ago)

yeah thats what im sayin - besides shilling all the sox are pretty lovable or innocuous

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

...and that game was poopy

bases loaded w/no outs wtf

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

Urgh.

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:40 (seventeen years ago)

It's easy to hate the Red Sox -- they are just a team built with money and lots of it ... just like the Yanks. Two best hitters stolen from smaller market teams that couldn't afford them. Fans that actually somehow manage to be *more* annoying than Yankees fans. Jimmy Fallon. I don't hate any of the Red Sox players individually. (except of course Schilling but that's a given) I don't hate any of the Cubs players either .. they all seem pretty cool actually. It's all about the annoying fans.

And jhoshea I didn't start disliking them "now", in fact I was actually rooting for the Yankees throughout that "greatest comeback".

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:48 (seventeen years ago)

oh man, its not difficult to hate the sox but thats for another day. GO CHIEF WAHOOS! 2 MORE PLZ..

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

Two best hitters stolen from smaller market teams that couldn't afford them.

Um, dude - not that actually acknowledging you're half wrong is going to matter any, but: David Ortiz was let go by Minnesota. He wasn't picked up by Boston because Minnesota couldn't afford him. He was picked up by Boston because the Twins didn't think he'd be worth a damn, & tried their best (according to some accounts) to make him hit against his strengths. In fact, if it wasn't for Jeremy Giambi (the Sox DH starting in 2003) sucking, Ortiz would either be going gonzo for another team, or going gonzo in another baseball league.

But, hey, whatever works for you, broseph.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

i will take dice-k apologizing to the next level: has anyone else noticed umps getting CONFUSED by dice-k's pitches?? from the very first game he pitched, it seemed like some pitches corkscrewed into or out of the zone in a way umps hadn't seen; they ended up calling strikes balls and balls strikes. i know the CW on this - that it all evens out. but still. i feel like dice-k gets robbed pretty consistently.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

It's easy to hate the Red Sox -- they are just a team built with money and lots of it ... just like the Yanks.

it was a faustian bargain, in order for the Red Sox to beat who they despised the most, they had to become them.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

dice-k is just his nick name morbs

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

but no one ever uses his first name, to the point where I think ppl don't know that.

Anyway, can either Byrd or Wakefield break a pane of glass?

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

So "Daisuke" is not pronounced Dice-K, but everyone pretends it is?

it's a very close approximation... the "ke" at the end is not a "kay" sound, it's a short brief "keh" like the first syllable in "kettle".

If his name was "Daisukei", then "Dice-K" would be very accurate.

But to be fair, his nickname is actually one of America's better attempts at pronouncing a Japanese word ending with an "e" sound (cf: karate, karaoke, sake) which usually get butchered with a long "e" sound, rendering nearly incomprehensible to Japanese speakers.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

I was waiting for you to clarify, thx

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

Top 5 ALCS Relievers, by WXRL (Expected wins added over a replacement level pitcher)

Rafael Betancourt, CLE, 6.85
Jonathan Papelbon, BOS, 5.14
Hideki Okajima, BOS, 4.43
Rafael Perez, CLE, 3.14
Joe Borowski, CLE, 2.78

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

Borowski? metrics has failed you.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

Steve OTM, that U sound gets dropped in some regional accents too so Dice-K is actually really close (but I lived in Ottawa for a long time so my "kay" sounds like the Japanese "ke" already-- one of the most close-mouthed accents in North America!)

Will M., Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

On the bright side, we're one game away from me getting my #83 shirt for my Halloween costume - "Sexy Eric Gagne" - for like $2 at the Twins store.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 19 October 2007 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

Postseason comparison:

Bob Gibson(WS only):

7-2, 81 IP, 92 SO, 1.89 ERA

Josh Beckett:

4-0 65 IP, 72 SO, 1.78 ERA

Yeah, yeah, there weren't three rounds of playoffs in Gibson's time, it's kinda dumb to make comparisons before the 2007 playoffs are even over, and Mariano Rivera has been better than both these guys. Also worth considering: Gibson played in an extreme pitchers era, whereas Beckett is not. As for the quality of competition they faced, I'd call it a draw.

Also, is Casey Blake a fan of The Chameleons, circa Strange Times?

"There's no sense sitting here dwelling on what happened in the past," Blake said. "We've got to have a warrior mentality. We have no future, and we have no past. We've got to just show up and get the job done."

Tracer Hand, Monday, 22 October 2007 02:50 (seventeen years ago)

Michael F Gill, Monday, 22 October 2007 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

G00blar, Monday, 22 October 2007 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

the third base coach may have just cost them a run right there

Tracer Hand, Monday, 22 October 2007 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

Although I guess it is the 3rd base coaches fault for not waving him home

Michael F Gill, Monday, 22 October 2007 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

he's like "stop uh i mean, no go ahead -- wait stop -- go"

how about them Boston rookies

Michael F Gill, Monday, 22 October 2007 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

is ellsbury the luckiest red sock? in this game he reached on a squirt ground ball, fielder's choice that bounced off a dude's glove (which otherwise would have been a DP), and an error by casey blake

Tracer Hand, Monday, 22 October 2007 03:10 (seventeen years ago)

i mean dude's 1 for 3 which ain't shabby but he's reached every time

Tracer Hand, Monday, 22 October 2007 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

you know what is awesome about watching this on channel 5 (uk):

- no commercials
- no network logo or promos during the game

Tracer Hand, Monday, 22 October 2007 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

by the way, you know why there are no commercials? channel 5 literally can find no one willing to pay.

Joel Patrick Skinner (born February 21, 1961 in La Jolla, California) is a former catcher in Major League Baseball and is currently the third base coach of the Cleveland Indians, who he just helped lose the American League Championship Series Game 7 against Boston by holding up Kenny Lofton. He is the son of Bob Skinner, a National League outfielder in the 1950s and '60s. He is known for making the best call in baseball history and advancing the Red Sox to the world series.

Slightly disappointing postgame "riot," Boston. :(

Highlight of the game = random brahdudes (total strangers, I think) in RF grandstand mouth-kissing each other after Pedroia's homer like they were auditioning for a community theater production of "Take Me Out" or something.

wow the media might be making a little too much of the lofton play - final score 11-2 guys

jhøshea, Monday, 22 October 2007 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

asleep by the 5th this time.

Damn few competitive games since the NYY-CLE "bug" contest.

In the middle of the fifth, it was a 3-2 ballgame. In a game 7. Does a game have to be tied to be "competitive"?

G00blar, Monday, 22 October 2007 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

yeah uh

jhøshea that's true but at the time it was 3-2, the next pitch was a double play ball, and then...

Tracer Hand, Monday, 22 October 2007 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

so 11-3 then

jhøshea, Monday, 22 October 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

7th inning or later, I mean

Dr Morbius, Monday, 22 October 2007 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

The Sox caught some breaks early in game 7 (bad hop single, lofton safe on the double) but the Tribe was never really going to win anyway. When they couldn't close it out at home I felt their chances slipping away.

Westbrook finally settled in was yanked after retiring 8 straight hitters. Can't really fault Wedge for going with Bettancourt but Westbrook was looking good and I hoped he'd go one more inning.

All in all though the collapse was a team effort- hitting, pitching and coaching. disappointing

brownie, Monday, 22 October 2007 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

ppl sure like "collapse." To use Eric Byrnes' fave word, Indians were just "outplayed" for 3 nights.

At least SABR might get better seats at the Jake next June.

Tracer OTM re: Lofton at 3rd base. It seemed like a tough call for the coach, as Manny actually RAN in at the ball, maybe looking like he was going to throw for home, but then didn't. but yeah, if they had tied it up there and not gotten the subsequent double play, the came MIGHT have been different.

then again, Blake turned in such a disgusting performance at 3rd base...NOT running after the ball he flubbed and making the fielder sprint in after it?? DO YR JOB

river wolf, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

i hate blake's stupid ass beard

Mr. Que, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

dudes the lofton play and the double play are unrelated. why not just say like if the red sox had scored 10 less runs the indians wouldve won.

jhøshea, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

If the Red Sox had scored 10 fewer runs, the Indians would've won.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

yr being ridiculous, dudes

if lofton had scored or not been called out at 2nd, the game WOULD have been different. they may not have won, but still. you're acting like things don't happen sequentially or something

river wolf, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

It's like everyone blaming Bartman for the Cubs losing in 2003. Like he was responsible for the Marlins to score eight more times that night.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

rw OTM on the Fallacy of the Predetermined Hit(s)

Dr Morbius, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

these are not the arguments to make abt an 11-2 game. cleavland got destroyed. this game clearly didnt hinge on one or two plays.

and in general that sort of cherry picking is kinda ridiculous as a baseball game is made up of a lot of situations - the team who get more of them to go their way wins.

jeez if only the red sox hadnt hit into 3 double plays they couldve scored 17 runs which wouldved just edged out cleavland's 15 that they wouldve got if only kenny lofton had scored that one time and then instead of a double play they got a three run homer and then scored 5 more runs in the inning getting to boston's bullpen early leading to extra innings w/the score tied 15-15 when pinch hitter eric gange drove in two runs in the bottom of the 21st w/a sacrifice bunt that glanced off the imagination of the 3rd base coach...

jhøshea, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

and i am not acting as if things dont happen in order or indulging in "the Fallacy of the Predetermined Hit(s)"

jhøshea, Monday, 22 October 2007 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, this. that lofton run might have bucked up cleveland morale. because after they all looked like a bunch of sad sacks.

river wolf, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

The impact of the Lofton events (umpire's call at 2nd, coach's call at 3rd) reminds me of Krakauer's Into Thin Air. Small choices and judgment calls resulting in disasters seemingly out of all proportion to their individual causes. It's not about "blaming" Skinner for the blowout that came later. His judgment call wasn't disgraceful; it was just mistaken. But that's not to deny that its impact on the opportunities available to both teams and the psyche of the players and crowd. That's baseball.

collardio gelatinous, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

er, "not to deny that its impact"

collardio gelatinous, Monday, 22 October 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

Every inning is a new inning just like every game is a new game.

That's why I hate the Yankees so much. Used to be that they could be behind 10-4 in the eighth inning and still pull a win out of their collective asses.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 22 October 2007 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

The Indians couldn't afford to blow the opportunities they had available last night. Red Sox hit into a thousand and one double plays and still win going away. Hafner strikes out with two guys on and nobody out- Indians can't recover.

Hafner is slowly turning into Russell Branyan.

brownie, Monday, 22 October 2007 21:08 (seventeen years ago)
