I guess conventional rooting heuristics suggest I should root for the Giants now but in I don't think I can pretend to care

I can't bring myself to vote for Huey, so I'll take the Jefferson Airplane instead.

Andy K, Saturday, 13 October 2012 04:58 (thirteen years ago)

so anyways i need to break this down in my head.

Tim Lincecum needs to start game one. he has been the Giants worst pitcher this year, no way he should have even given a shot. then a funny thing has happened however, he has dominated. was the only thing the Giants fan got excited about during those first two miserable games...so why not bring him back, and at home nonetheless, for the first game.

Matt Cain is your ace and he goes second and can come back for game seven...

I didn't watch more than five minutes of last night's game, but I've looked at the slide on replay; did they end up throwing at Holliday?

clemenza, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:05 (thirteen years ago)

Nope, most of the time he came up there was either someone on base or the lead was still less than 5 runs. With all the amazing Cards comebacks they were probably wary of giving them a route back into the game. He'll get drilled at some point this series tho.

pandemic, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:15 (thirteen years ago)

Was nice to see him boot a ball in the outfield tho.

pandemic, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:15 (thirteen years ago)

did they end up throwing at Holliday?

Buck actually skirted the issue with Cain at one point and then, while they were talking, Pagan hit his homer. Scutaro got his revenge in runs before they pulled him.

really really need Allan Craig of 99% of the time to come back.

bnw, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

seriously though, i'm guessing the thought process is like this:

1) if they displayed the regular season stats, then some people would think that those stats are still evolving and could be impacted by postseason performance
2) some idiot at a bar would see beltran hit a home run and then complain that the home run total didn't increase by 1 the next time he came to bat. "they forgot to update the stats! fucking idiots!"
3) nearby people at the bar would know better but wouldn't want to interfere, causing uncomfortable feelings all around

Andy K, Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

When Posey was asked after the game how Zito did it, he said "He pitched." I know that's really corny, and I know Zito's a walking punchline, but from the little bit that I saw (just can't get interested in this series), it seemed apropos. I wouldn't be surprised if karma's about to catch up with St. Louis.

clemenza, Saturday, 20 October 2012 12:45 (thirteen years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised at all. To be fair to Zito, the contract is really the walking punchline (and Zito's had the misfortune of earning it while at times being the fifth best starter on a very good staff.)

Nah, Zito's been the bane of the cardinal's existence all year, in a similar way that astro's legend bud Norris has dominated the cards for the past few seasons. Before last nights game a friend and I were like "well, lol Zito's probably going to kick our ass tonight", and sadly we were right.

Anyway, I just mean that getting stomped by Zito isn't some sort of demoralizing event for this year's cardinals (or their fans), they'll be fine. Remember that part at the end of rookie of the year where the kid loses his magical ability to throw 100 mph and he throws the giant arcing softball pitch? 2012 cardinals = the slugging doofus who strikes out on that pitch. But the epilogue is that the slugging doofus came back the next year and won the MVP

its pretty standard for Cards to take hardest road possible. they'll get to vogelsong this time around. but carp is not dominant. both games are 50/50 imo. media/everyone overlooks how good lohse has been. and Cards only have to win one, so still advantage us.

atlas sug (bnw), Saturday, 20 October 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

Vogelsong is the Giants best pitcher this year. he had a rough stretch but come back and is pitching at the top of his game once again. Cain pitched one of his best games last game and lost. that should not have happened but it did.

Cardinals have the advantage as they only have to win one. the Giants have the momentum. if the Giants just play Giants ball than that is all us fans can hope for. Cards are a tough out and to win two is very hard to do. this team seems to like to have their backs against the wall. well see it's going to be great and the Giants can pull this off.

WilliamC, Monday, 22 October 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

from BP:

PECOTA Odds of Winning: Giants 65.7 percent, Cardinals 34.3 percent

Odds if Carpenter replaces Holliday again: Giants 67.9 percent, Cardinals 32.1 percent

PECOTA does not like Lohse. It’s nothing personal—at least, as far as we can tell—but the system views the Cardinals’ Game Seven starter as only slightly better than replacement-level pitcher, and hence, it expects the Giants to ride Cain to the pennant by nearly a 2-to-1 margin.

greatest comeback in MLB history seems a little j0rdan-esque hyperbolic. according to this completely trustworthy website i just found, of the 76 MLB playoff teams that have been up 3 games to 1 in a 7 game series, 65 (or 85%) have gone onto win the series, and 11 (or 15%) have lost). so i'm not sure how the giants, in equaling the achievement of 11 other teams, while playing 2 of the 3 remaining games at home, in the LCS (rather than the WS), against the overachieving cardinals, would be part of the greatest comeback in MLB history. at least not this year.

but i'm just pissed because the cardinals are pulling a 2012 cardinals again

ESPN Radio online missed pitches all night, AND the final out, WTF?

Just caught the beginning and very end. That's gotta be the worst 7th-game blowout since Joaquin in '85.

(xpost) Don't remember that all...Cards on the losing end all three times. They made out better in '34.

The Giants outscored the Cardinals 20-1 in Games 5, 6 and 7 and won a decisive seventh game for the first time in franchise history.

6-0 facing elimination in the postseason! Wow.

giants baseball is torture except all the winning and shit

johnathan lee riche$ (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 08:10 (thirteen years ago)

The weird thing is that this was one of the most boring seven game series ever. None of the games were close and they were all decided in the early innings.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 12:32 (thirteen years ago)

I mean it wasn't boring in the sense that you had a lot of great individual performances on both sides of the ball and the drama of the Giants' comeback from 3-1, but none of the games themselves were exciting.

TS: Boring seven-game CS vs least-dominant CS in which the swept team never led

Andy K, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 12:33 (thirteen years ago)

Although three out of four games were close!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

Both LCS's sucked, hoping the WS at least has a bit of drama (though Giants coming back from down 3-1 vs. the king of comebacks was pretty cool)

frogbs, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't watch Game 5, but Neyer wrote that Zito pitched okay and got a lot of help from his defense and/or the Cards hitting balls right at people. I'd still feel better with Lincecum out there, but Bee OK would know better.

that link is awesome, morbs. look at yadi's bat wobble, that's amazing! i had no idea bats did that, to that degree.

I love watching those high speed clips, there's a physics gold mine in there.

i wish i could get access to the raw footage (besides the clips in the link morbs posted, i mean).

I am so mesmerized by that camera, watched the game on DVR and kept rewinding all these and trying to get my wife to care. LOOK AT THAT, THATS SO COOL as she rolled here eyes, etc.

Sam Miller in BP:

Now that it’s over, let’s be honest: That was probably the worst seven-game series of our lifetimes.

The average margin of victory was 4.9 runs. The average game reached a 90 percent win expectancy with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. There was one lead change in the entire series, and it took place in the third inning. There were two saves. No game was tied later than the fourth inning. There were few true heroes -- imagine the Cardinals had won the series, which they very nearly did; now tell me who would have been the series MVP? Can you?

Furthermore, it was a matchup between two teams that had just won the World Series, two teams whose fans could elicit no sympathy from the general population, two teams with top-10 payrolls. One team had Brian Wilson's beard in the dugout; the other had, somehow, become the villains of the National League. It was almost impossible to get into this series.

And yet it was incredibly fun. Baseball can’t be ruined. That’s the takeaway here. Baseball can’t be ruined. Gosh, we’re lucky.

crazy uncle in the attic (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

would like to thank the sf giants for ending the game in time for me to watch most of the debate, thx

As if the Game 7 triple-double wasn’t strange enough, Hunter Pence revealed Tuesday that the magical bat had a name.

“Fryer,” Pence said. “I name all my bats. Whatever word comes to mind, I write it on them.”

Fryer?

“F-R-Y-E-R,” Pence said.

So now we know, Fryer was the hero that died for a great cause Monday night. Fryer was also the bat that hit a baseball deep into the St. Louis night in Game 4. Pence said he has no idea what happened to Fryer, but Andrew Baggarly did some digging and found that a season-ticket holder bought it at the team store and later called the Giants and said Pence should have it back.

This story may have a happy ending after all for Pence, who thought the bat was long gone.

“He will always be Fryer to me,” Pence said.

Fryer might be coming home, and with the way Pence breaks bats, surely will soon be joined by another named bat. What are the other names?

“Man,” Pence said, smiling. “You all are getting personal.”
