And once again Saturday, after the sixth start of his puzzling spring, it remained impossible to say what kind of pitcher the great Roy Halladay can be anymore. The results? They were nothing he'll tell his grandkids about someday. You can book that.He faced 18 hitters. He retired seven of them. Seven. He allowed three doubles, four singles, two walks and a hit batter. Another hitter reached when Halladay made an errant throw to first after fielding a bunt. The Phillies announced afterward that he had pitched four "innings" and allowed three runs (two earned). But his pitching coach, Rich Dubee, pulled the plug on one of those innings with two outs and the bases loaded. And four of the remaining 11 outs came on a caught-stealing and three double-play balls. So only seven hitters actually headed back to the bench without reaching base. Just one of them struck out -- looking, on a fourth-inning changeup, on Halladay's 76th pitch of the day.More messy details: Halladay threw first-pitch strikes to only eight of 18 hitters. (“That,” muttered one bystander, after another ball one, “isn’t him.”) He induced three swings and misses out of 81 pitches – none on his fastball. He touched 90 miles per hour on the radar gun once, on his seventh pitch of the day. But mostly, when he delivered his fastball, the guns lit with numbers ranging from 86 to 89. Aroldis Chapman, it wasn't.

$20m guaranteed this season for a #4 starter at best.at least he won't hit his vesting options this year and we can sign a 37yr old has-been on a minor league incentive-laden contract. or he'll reluctantly retire.he's done for.

Wacky line for Halladay: 9 Ks in 3.1 innings, but that's as far as he got because the Braves were kicking the stew out of him between strikeouts.

"We got positive feedback from everybody who has interacted with him recently,'' Proefrock said. "We did our due diligence. It's just good business.
"We got a feel for his desire to come back and his sincerity about that, and what kind of condition he's put himself in. It's a minor league deal. We're not signing him to a $90 million deal like the Cubs did, but you still want to get a guy who's committed and is going to conduct himself appropriately. As far as we're concerned, that was satisfied."

I haven't gone through Hamels' game log, but when I looked at his overall stats yesterday, 1-8 didn't seem right--they weren't that bad.
http://mlb.si.com/2013/05/27/cole-hamels-record-philadelphia-phillies/?sct=uk_wr_a2
7-3 seems overly optimistic--his ERA is almost 4.50, and you're bound to lose some quality starts. Maybe 6-4 or 6-5 would be more in line with everything else?

woo! .500!
― Mordy , Wednesday, 5 June 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)
(pedantry alert)
Mayberry was not the first player to hit two homers in extra innings:
Mayberry-- who did not start the game-- also homered in the bottom of the 10th to re-tie the game after Miami took the lead in the top half. No player in the majors had hit two extra-inning homers in the same game since Baltimore's Mike Young did so against the Angels on May 28, 1987. And Elias confirms he was just the sixth player ever to do that.
Mayberry also didn't start the game. Since RBI became official in 1920, no player had ever come off the bench to record 5+ RBI, with all of them coming in extra innings.

what will it take to get him canned? they've gone downhill every year since he took over, which isn't necessarily his fault, but he's only aided the process. no one (except j-paps) has any expectations of the team anymore, so it's not like ppl will be let down by a fourth- (okay, fifth-) place finish next year.
and if his failure to trade byrd/papelbon/cliff/hamels/anyone to shore up a terrible farm system hasn't gotten him fired yet, then what's left?

rosenthal's column on why the phils need to lower their expectations if the red sox is where they want hamels to go, drawing the expected twitter hate from the ijit parade http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/philadelphia-phillies-boston-red-sox-cole-hamels-trade-040915
like the sox farm system was just named #1 in baseball by baseball america, they have really valuable prospects who are just not as valuable as swihart or castillo or owens that they'd prob give up - deven marrero, sean coyle, garin cecchini, rodriguez. in terms of major leaguers i'm sure the sox wouldn't want to lose holt's utility value but if push came to shove they could and it'd be fine.

Jerome Williams is pitching today. Here's a classic Jerome Williams moment:
"I just told Righetti one day. I'm doing a bucket, and I'm like Rags, we need to talk about something. He's like, 'What?' Ummmm. What's my name? He's like, 'Jeremy.' Ummmm. No. It's not, actually. It's actually Jerome. He's like, 'so for a couple years I've been calling you Jeremy and it's not even your name? Why didn't you correct me?' I told him the same: I was scared. 'What were you scared about?' I don't know. And he slapped me."

Velasquez's big game and Signature Significance:
http://www.billjamesonline.com/indicative_impressions/
So, what does this all indicate? I do think the list of pitchers having games like this bodes well for Velasquez. While there are a handful of starters mentioned that may not fit everyone’s description of a quality pitcher, it’s still full of players who went on to fine careers. Not 100% of them, of course, and certainly injuries derailed a few, but it’s a pretty compelling list.

Colin: The only thing with Hoskins that is really out of whack is his HR/FB, which currently stands at 40%. It’s not unreasonable to think he’ll be close to 20% given his power and the park he plays in. That’s still like 50 HR. Pretty good, I say!
Dave Cameron: Well, yeah, no one can really keep hitting 85% of their XBH as HRs. Every well struck ball he’s hit has left the yard, basically. That’s not going to last.
