Wrigley is calling my name sometime in April.
― felicity, Saturday, 8 March 2008 20:14 (eighteen years ago)
If I make it to the states this year can I press-gang some of you to take me to a game? (so far only planning Chicago in October which might not be ideal)

gabbneb would go to a mets game with a morbs, but might require lots of explanation of what all those funny men are doing with their sticks and cowparts

warm, Maine -- almost tempted to go Shea.
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 10 April 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)
I'm not even going to Chicago any more so the White Sox triumphant journey to the world series will have to happen without me.
― Mark C, Thursday, 10 April 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)
the temp in Flushing will drop 15 degrees during the game anyway...
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 10 April 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)
I am going to the Cubs-Pirates a week from Sunday. I think colette and toby are going too.
Chicago FAP at some point that weekend, probably Saturday.
― felicity, Thursday, 10 April 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)
^^that is a sunday postgame beer invitation to the chicago ILBBers BTW. Are there any?
― felicity, Thursday, 10 April 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)
i don't think there's anyone from chicago here.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 10 April 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)
but, out of idle curiosity, where is this FAP to occur? i've heard good things about beer.
mr. diamond is from the south side.

ukrainian village.
― chicago kevin, Friday, 11 April 2008 02:29 (seventeen years ago)
I'll let you know when I hear back from colette and toby. Probably on the North Side.
― felicity, Friday, 11 April 2008 02:39 (seventeen years ago)
the gingerman (next to the metro on clark, just north of wrigley) is the only non-jagbag place up there if you're looking for suggestions. better yet would be getting the hell out of wrigleyville but whatever, i'm easy.
― chicago kevin, Friday, 11 April 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I think colette might put something on the Chicago thread. Wouldn't mind visiting Wicker Park places like Rainbo and Holiday Star, or wherever the kids hang out nowadays.
― felicity, Friday, 11 April 2008 03:40 (seventeen years ago)
Gold star
― felicity, Friday, 11 April 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)
wow, i was at both gold star and rainbo last week . and rainbo tonight. the neighborhood is changing, goldstar, which was one of the most reliable bars for most of the time i've lived here, is now either over run by bike messengers (early) or neighborhood douches who are out slumming (later). but again, whatever, i'm easy.
― chicago kevin, Friday, 11 April 2008 05:24 (seventeen years ago)
I like Rainbo better, but also totally open to suggestions.
It is very, very reassuring that ILXors still go to only the same handful of bars in Brooklyn and Chicago that we did 6 years ago.
― felicity, Friday, 11 April 2008 05:29 (seventeen years ago)
no it's not.
I'm glad I didn't go to 4-hr Mets game last night, even with happy ending.
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 11 April 2008 13:22 (seventeen years ago)
It is very, very reassuring that ILXors are still contrarians.

― chicago kevin, Friday, 11 April 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)
same. i've had to stop going to my local for a bit but a few of the regulars there are baseball obessives. lately when i've gone out for drinks in the neighborhood i've been going to inner town pub.

after I move one stop closer to Coney!
― Dr Morbius, Saturday, 21 June 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)
Somewhat related:
There were theatrics during the game, as well, when a switch-pitcher on the mound for the Yankees and a switch-hitter at the plate for the Cyclones, unable to settle on their respective approaches, engaged in a bizarre late-game standoff that lasted several minutes.
― mattbot, Saturday, 21 June 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)
the rule is the pitcher must declare what hand he's going pitch with before the batter has to declare what side of the plate he'll bat from. the red sox had a guy in the late 80s/early 90s who was ambidextrous with a special glove that he could wear on either hand. the old red sox never let him pitch left handed though. i think he did with the rangers later on.
can't remember his name, greg something i think.

players "declaring" stuff brings welcome 1870s vibe.
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 23 June 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)
from the minor league umpire manual, via SABR's David Vincent:
6.15 AMBIDEXTROUS PITCHERS In the rare occasion of an ambidextrous pitcher, the pitcherand batter may each change positions one time at-bat. For example, if the pitcher changes from right-handed to left-handed and the batter then changes batter's boxes, each player must remain that way for the duration of that at-bat (unless the offensive team substitutes a pinch hitter, and then each player may again "switch" one time).

― Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)
I might be up for the 25th (have the Mets the next night).
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)
There are stay-in-your seats fireworks afterward, if it's any inducement.
― Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)
I went Saturday and the Reserved Bleacher seats weren't so hot. The woman policing the section was needlessly authoritarian about the seat numbers, despite the section being about 1/3 full. Plus it's a long ways away from the action and the RF and t-shirt cannon guy were paying zero attention to us.
― mattbot, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe we can get lucky on Craigslist.

― chicago kevin, Saturday, 19 July 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)
I went by the ballpark last night because I spent the day in C.I. anyway, and I asked if tix were sold out and they said no. Either box seats or standing were available. I took a box but it was out between right field and third base and some big guy's head was blocking my view. Went shopping for T-shirts, came back and took a seat right behind home plate basically. There were tons of empty seats. I think even with standing room only seats, you can definitely pick a good seat near the field (at least after the third inning). The people there didn't seem to care at all. It was a kind of boring game as the Cyclones were ahead by a lot until the last inning when the Yankees starting getting all these hits and runs. Cyclones still managed to win it. Oh, why do they play all that music between every pitch? Kind of annoying.
Up for a visit to the S.I. ballfield now. Let's coordinate.

VP, you seem like a time traveller who is used to the halcyon games of 1956.
― Dr Morbius, Saturday, 26 July 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)
There are very likely things happening Wed and Thurs--but how are those of us who work in Queens until 6 p.m. supposed to partake?
I guess I'm used to '80s baseball--my how times have changed. I was pleased with Giants Stadium when I went to see soccer--the food and beer offerings hadn't been all yuppified like in DC's RFK.

Joe Sheehan of Baseball Prospectus:
Not to be all Will Carroll here, but Jay Jaffe, Derek Jacques and I, among others, will be at tonight’s Brooklyn Cyclones game. If you’re around and want to talk some baseball, or just ask Jay why Joe Maddon bites his style, swing by the first-base side and I’m sure you’ll find us. (And yes, I’m annoyed that we missed Brad Holt by a day.)

For one night this summer, the Brooklyn Cyclones will be transformed into the Baracklyn Cyclones, honoring the 44th President of the United States with a night of patriotic partying at the ballpark.
