May have discovered the walk--eight in his last 11 games. If he were to play every game the rest of the way, and continued getting up to bat at the same rate (3.87 AB per game), he'd have to hit .119 (24/201) to fall below .250. He'd stay above .300 hitting .224 (45/201), and he'd need to hit .274 (55/201) to finish up at .325. Unlikely he'll play every game, though, making all of those slightly easier.

He still hasn't had more than a mini-slump; .300-.324 looks pretty good.

Agree with that. Puig's arrival (June 3) and Ramirez's return (June 4) were almost simultaneous. The Dodgers have been 50-20 starting on June 4. (If you wanted a counter-argument, they didn't start winning immediately: from June 4 to June 21, they were 6-10. That's when they took off.)

But I do believe that the arrival of certain players can spark a team in ways that can't be measured, sure, though not in the way Morbius dismisses the idea.

Dodgers big turnaround was stabilizing their rotation with Kershaw-Greinke-Ryu-Nolasco-Capuano. They had 8 starters going into the season and were on their 9th in about 2 weeks. The bullpen turnaround with the intro of Withrow and promotion of Paco and Jansen to higher leverage situations staunched the bleeding there. Hanley replaced mendoza line production from SS. Puig made up for the complete absence of Kemp, and Either started hitting higher than .220.

Weird that four voters thought him ROY, but not outlandish, I guess--6.3-5.0 isn't that big gap in WAR. If you look at historical context, though, not to mention Cy Young stats for a team that lost 100...

I'm being silly. When you think about how much of an early jump Puig had, and all the attention he attracted, 26-4 is a very reasonable result.

I agree--after a moment's thought, I realized I was doing the kind of nitpicking I hate. Also, Fernandez made up so much ground the last month, credit to the voters for not freezing the vote in August.

not that fernandez's season wasn't historic, of course. but puig had a pretty insane season (or 2/3 of a season) too, 4th in the majors in wRC+

The interesting question is, in light of how mercurial Puig's season was, and weighing that against how much of a roll of the dice young pitchers are, who would you rather have going forward? Puig's about a year-and-a-half older.

definitely puig, mostly because he plays every day and like you said is less of a gamble than a young pitcher. he's not just going to forget how to hit, and his walk rate showed a pretty steady improvement over the course of the summer. i feel pretty good about him being a star

also he's got so much defensive talent, i think once he grows up and settles down a bit he'll be a definite plus in the field

If "going forward" means the next ten years, I'd take Puig, but if it's the next five years (i.e. until free agency) I would probably take Fernandez. Great pitchers are a lot harder to find and develop.

The only thing that surprises me is the runs column--I would normally expect 110-120 for such a high level of play. He's had Ramirez and who else coming up behind him...? Probably mostly beyond his control, with a few baserunning gaffes mixed in.

He's either hit anywhere between 1st and 6th so its hard to tell.. He had Hanley but Hanley only played like 55 games last year. Behind him mostly last year was Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier Juan Uribe and AJ Ellis. Kemp was hurt more than Hanley was.
