John Perrotto in BP last week:

Dallas Green turns 73 next week, but that doesn't mean the Phillies' senior advisor to the general manager is mellowing. In fact, Green was as candid as ever when asked about Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins by the Bucks County Courier Times' Randy Miller recently. "I think we're all disappointed in Jimmy's reaction to what's going on," said Green, who managed the Phillies to the only World Series title in franchise history in 1980. "His body language is just brutal right now. The body language doesn't say that 'I'm busting my ass' right now.'"

Rollins has a .276 EqA and 23.8 VORP a year after being voted the NL's Most Valuable Player. Rollins was removed from a June 5 game against the Reds by manager Charlie Manuel for not hustling, and then benched for a key game against the Mets last Thursday after arriving late to Shea Stadium and saying he had been stuck in New York traffic. "Jimmy doesn't sense, I don't think, that [his teammates] are starting to get upset with him," Green said. Green also stated that he would not hesitate to share his feelings with Rollins the next time their paths cross. "Jimmy and I have a pretty good relationship," Green said. "I'll tell him when I think he's done right and I'll tell him when I think he's done wrong. He's done wrong. He's done wrong for the team, he's done wrong for himself, and he's done wrong for Charlie."

.248 with 196 strikeouts is true, but if he is hitting a 3 run homer to take the lead every three at bats instead of a single I think that counts for something. In this day and age of sabremetrics, raw numbers aren't the only things that matter. As this article states hes far and away the best clutch hitter (with both runners in scoring position, and in the 7th inning and later). If the Phils win the division he is the reason. Pujols team is out of contention. Explain to me who is more valuable to their team...

In the 10 games since Myers' last start, Phillies starters are 8-0 with a 2.66 ERA, and in the last eight games, they're 6-0 with a 1.70 ERA.

Or:

Howard extended 5/125.

Antoine Joubert Singers (Andy K), Monday, 26 April 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

Keith Law
A bad deal for Philly?
"This is one of the worst extension of its kind -- it's an overpay in both years and dollars. Howard is one of the last guys in the middle of the lineup I'd give that kind of money, too. He's 30, has a bad body, is not a good defender, and has struggled to make contact to versus lefties -- he's gone backwards in that area over the past couple of years. If you were locking him up through age 31, it's not so bad. How happy are if you're Albert Pujols? If Howard is worth $25 million, Pujols is worth $50 million a year."

nabisco infiltrator (J0rdan S.), Monday, 26 April 2010 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

wow that's a bad contract

ciderpress, Monday, 26 April 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

Beyond the Boxscore has analysed the deal and reckon that if a healthy, 700 AB/year Howard plays to his projections, the Phillies have overspent by $49m.

Mark C, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 12:37 (fifteen years ago)

Hindsight Phillies GM action: Extend Lee at market rate for 4 years, or sign the Howard extension?

Rob Neyer (12:34 PM)
Look, here's the biggest problem with the Howard deal ... it was, at this moment, utterly unnecessary. He was already under contract through 2011. What have the Phillies *possibly* gained by adding five years to that now? Cliff Lee is a separate issue.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

Howard's b-ref comps

1. Richie Sexson (918)
2. Cecil Fielder (893)
3. Mo Vaughn (891)
4. Willie McCovey (891)
5. David Ortiz (890)
6. Tony Clark (890)
7. Mark McGwire (889)
8. Carlos Delgado (889)
9. Fred McGriff (885)
10. Norm Cash (876)

mayor jingleberries, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

All those guys were more or less finished as impact players by their mid-30's (and half of them were washed up and out of baseball by that age). Nice one Phillies!

How silly does Halladay feel right now? He willingly agreed to an extension that will end when he's the same age as Howard will be at the end of his new contract -- and he'll be making about half of what Howard makes per year. He obviously could have held them up for so much more money (especially since Lee had already been traded, so he knew they wouldn't be competing against each other for superstar pitcher money with the same team), and not least because he won't be sucking in four years.

one thing that kinda bugs is why on earth folx are all ZMGRFLMAOWTF @ howard's contract when Teixiera's is about the same (~90%), 3 years longgggger and Teix is just as old and not as good (IMHO).

is it because the phils aren't the yanx and people are used to the yanx throwing crazy money around like it ain't no thang for most of the past decade with precious little to show for it?

Ryan Madson kicked a chair in frustration after he blew a save in the 10th inning on Wednesday in San Francisco.

The chair won.

Madson broke his right big toe and the Phillies placed him on the 15-day disabled list Friday just as they activated right-hander Brad Lidge, who had been on the DL since the season started. The Phillies recalled left-hander Antonio Bastardo from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Madson's place on the 25-man roster.

The Rockies lodged a complaint with MLB after Monday's game, in which Phillies bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer was seen peering through binoculars at home plate while the Phillies batted in the second inning, and Shane Victorino was spotted on the bullpen phone in the dugout. The Phillies claim Billmeyer was checking out their own catcher, an excuse that doesn't hold water because, well, the Phillies were at bat.

The Rockies are the second team in little more than a week to make this accusation, as the Mets apparently did the same after Johan Santana gave up 10 runs to them earlier this month.

I remember the Dodgers got chippy with Victorino a year or so ago for doing the same thing..

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley will be out at least eight weeks after having surgery on his injured right thumb, Phillies athletic trainer Scott Sheridan said.

The operation was performed Thursday in New York by hand specialist Dr. Andrew Weiland. Trainers said Utley must wear a splint on the thumb for five weeks before he begins rehabilitation. Utley and the Phillies will get a better idea exactly how long he will be sidelined once the stitches are removed from the thumb.

yeah i mean... what starting pitcher would constitute "a major deal"? dan haren? that doesn't make sense bcuz there is no way the d backs would trade for werth and no way that the phillies could give them fair value in return w/o giving up brown

so it must be roy oswalt? that really isn't that major tho cuz it should be pretty easy to get him

two weeks pass...

Today's game was EPIC.

Maltodextrin, Friday, 13 August 2010 03:55 (fourteen years ago)

Agreed!

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 04:03 (fourteen years ago)

I've never seen a pitcher called for a balk for faking a throw to an unoccupied base before. That's the kind of weird shit that has been happening to the Dodgers this year.

Maltodextrin, Friday, 13 August 2010 04:14 (fourteen years ago)

After hitting the two-run double that capped an incredible Phillies rally, Carlos Ruiz tried to escape his teammates. But that wasn't happening. Not on this night.

He ran away from the happy mob of players sprinting from the dugout. Brian Schneider and Mike Sweeney were the first to tackle him.

"And then it was a big mess," Ruiz said.

I don't know if I should 'aw' at how much they clearly love each other, or gag.

This is brutal. (Bottom of the 8th v. Giants, Giants just got charged for a balk, now it's 8-3, came into the inning 4-3.)

Mordy, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 01:47 (fourteen years ago)

Oh man, this game.

Mordy, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 01:52 (fourteen years ago)

Ibanez had a great catch this inning (Nationals game), caught the ball like an inch off the ground.

Mordy, Sunday, 22 August 2010 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

which means that it was hit, what, 2 feet in front of him?

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

Nah, he did some serious running/diving

Mordy, Sunday, 22 August 2010 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

It's not super controversial to say Halladay has been playing better than Oswalt atm, I don't think. Dude has a perfect game this season and 19 wins.

Mordy, Thursday, 16 September 2010 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

And even still... look at Oswalt's stats. You may be surprised.

JUST SAY IN

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

maybe since aug 1 but theres no way you'd justify picking oswalt over halladay head to head ever

ciderpress, Thursday, 16 September 2010 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

VORP:

Oswalt 48.2
Halladay 70.4 (best among pitchers and 3rd most in MLB)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

How much of VORP is defense dependent? Because Roy O. with HOU vs. PHI defense is pretty O_O.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

VORP is so 2005

ciderpress, Thursday, 16 September 2010 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

xpost Let's just say that it isn't 50% defense dependent, which is what it would need to be to make up the difference between them.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

wait I thought you were a maths guy. how are you getting to the 50% diff.?

~2/3rds of his season (to date) was with Houston.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

I meant that Halladay's VORP is 50% higher than Oswalt's.

That would have to be one really shitty defense in Houston. Like, me playing all the positions kind of bad.

Oswalt has pitched better than Halladay since Aug 1 though. (which is more of a credit to Oswalt -- Halladay has still been really really good)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

That would have to be one really shitty defense in Houston. Like, me playing all the positions kind of bad.

― NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, September 16, 2010 9:21 AM (8 minutes ago)

this is what I am thinking is the case! Would love to have access to that Stats Inc data.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 September 2010 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

WAR adjusts for team defense, and Fangraphs has Halladay at 6.4 WAR and Oswalt at 4.0, if you prefer that stat. Disregarding the whole dueling definitions of WAR thing between different websites (which I don't really care about), that's still a huge difference.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 16 September 2010 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

baseball-reference WAR is the one that adjusts for team defense

fangraphs WAR uses FIP for the defensive component which only looks at K, BB, HR, and ignores actual runs allowed completely

ciderpress, Thursday, 16 September 2010 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

err the pitching component i mean

ciderpress, Thursday, 16 September 2010 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

Ah, OK, so using B-R's numbers it's 6.7 vs 4.4. Not sure what we learn there, besides the fact that Halladay is still way ahead on the season.

sanskrit, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

I can't get my head around the math (what I'd put up, what I'd win), but if someone offered me those odds, I'd definitely take the field. The Phillies front three is awesome, but there are lots of moving parts on a baseball team; those guys could pitch more or less as well as expected, and lots else could go wrong to nullify that.

what am i doing wrong here? 9-5 odds = 5/14 = 35.7% chance of winning?!

i'll do some bad math:

80% chance of securing first or wild card, 75% chance of winning NLDS, 70% chance of winning NLCS, 60% chance of WS victory

even that wildly optimistic scenario comes out to a 25.2% of winning.. will they let you take the other side of that bet?

The obvious cautionary note for the Phillies' chances: all those World Series won by the Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz Braves (close, but a front three I'd take over the Phillies').

clemenza, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

Something else (seems like I'm knocking the Phillies; I'm not, just trying to look at this realistically): Roy Oswalt's been a great pitcher over his career, but is anyone looking for him to duplicate what he did after he came over to Philadelphia last year? When he left Houston, he was on the third year of a normal mid-career decline (or, if you will, adjustment); after the trade he did something not all that uncommon, which is to pitch lights out for the last couple of months. Who will the Phillies get this year: the guy they saw in August and September, or the guy who left Houston? My guess would be the latter.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:14 (fourteen years ago)

2 things: better defense and change of scenery. playing for one of the worst teams in baseball can't be good for the ERA/WHIP in both factors.

Agreed, in explaining what happened last year. One of those factors presumably remains, the other's gone--and I think the one that's gone can be pretty huge.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:23 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not saying he won't pitch well; even an average year from Oswalt will be pretty good. I'm saying he won't be putting up a 1.74 ERA, and there are reasons to believe he's more inclined to be in the mid-three range or higher.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

If you're going to ignore the SABR figures, I'd try not to limit your focus to straight ERA. Something that's telling even in his "off"-first half of the year with Houston is that his WHIP was 1.11 and his BAA was .229. Those #s are in line with your #1-#2 pitchers. He will be fine.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:28 (fourteen years ago)

yeah is anyone saying roy oswalt is gonna put up a sub-2 era? i must have missed that.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:29 (fourteen years ago)

I'm watching the Lee press conference and I can't think of any player I've seen in my lifetime who ever wanted to be a Philly as much as he does

Mordy, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:29 (fourteen years ago)

yeah is anyone saying roy oswalt is gonna put up a sub-2 era? i must have missed that

Not explicitly, no. But I'm addressing the idea that the Phillies are now overwhelming, off-the-chart favorites to win next year (which is what the past 30 posts have been about)--to believe that, I think one of the assumptions you'd be making is that Oswalt next year will be something close to the Oswalt of August and September. "He will be fine"--sure, no argument. I'm questioning the idea that Halladay + Lee + "He will be fine" = 1970 Orioles.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

Let me be even clearer: no one here is saying that about Oswalt--but whoever pegged the Phillies at 5 to 2 to win the Series is.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:36 (fourteen years ago)

I think even the phillies fans (like me) think the 5 to 2 number is ridiculous

Mordy, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:45 (fourteen years ago)

Another thing I'd be interested in doing is going back over every postseason since '69 and asking two questions: who among the playoff teams was favored to win, and who actually did win? If you eliminated the occasional year where there was no clear favorite, I'd be surprised if even half the favorites ultimately emerge as the WS winner. (I'm just guessing.) And a) it becomes even more a roll of the dice in the wild-card era, and b) all of that presupposes that you make the playoffs in the first place. Winning a World Series is really hard!

But you're right, probably everybody here realizes those odds are crazy.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:52 (fourteen years ago)

uhhh you realize vegas sets odds to get action, not because they have an actual opinion?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:53 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks for the clarification; I assume it's also meant for all the other people upthread who commented on the absurdity of those odds.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:55 (fourteen years ago)

Clem, just to back up a bit I think perhaps you are underrating Oswalt's tenure with Houston in 2010. Take a look at some defense independent stats. He had a great YEAR, he was one of the top 15-20 pitchers in baseball (nb: I was his biggest cheerleader on ILB). Yes he was particularly great down the stretch. but take a deeper peak at his season with Houston outside of ERA and you may be surprised...

UNLESS you're going "retro-cool" for ERA like you did for RBIs earlier this year, and in that case, I am just gonna shrug.gif

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:04 (fourteen years ago)

xp yes it is, talking about odds is pointless unless you are gambling

I have, and you're quite right; his H/9 and SO/BB with the Astros were very good last year. How about we split the difference between his four months with Houston and two with the Phillies, add a year for age, and say he'll have an ERA around 3.00 next year?

talking about odds is pointless unless you are gambling

And talking about the Academy Awards is pointless, unless you're a marketing executive--but we do, all the time. Most everything we argue about here is pointless. But it's fun, so we do.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not a big gambler, but it seems to me that the odds have a lot more to do with popular conception than some realistic set of facts. like, phillies are probably a very hot bet right now because of this trade and so vegas responds appropriately by giving you far less payout for your bet.

Mordy, Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

Anyway, I'll admit that I misunderstood the initial origin of these 5:2 odds. I thought they were the opinion of a writer, or someone at ESPN--I didn't realize they were actual Vegas odds.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

but you have to factor in the vig.. which at this stage must be pretty steep. perhaps a good 10% more which would wipe out insured profit. and to cad's point, it's largely pr blathering to churn up interest.

sanskrit, Thursday, 16 December 2010 04:19 (fourteen years ago)

As soon as you start talking about the vig, I'm seeing Morrie the wig salesman getting his head bashed in by Jimmy the Gent.

How often does the team that won the most games in that season go on to win the WS? It's fairly rare (they show these numbers every year during the playoffs).

Yes, but this has to be balanced against offering too-favourable odds on the other teams, which a boomaker needs to avoid, at least before the betting has really started. Joe Posnanski is baffled the Royals are 125-1, for example. I'm baffled the Dodgers and their sexy new rotation are 30-1 when there's no guarantee the Rockies or Giants will be obviously better in 2011.

Mark C, Thursday, 16 December 2010 11:13 (fourteen years ago)

James put a new piece up yesterday called "Thirty-Three Rotations." I love the subtitle: "The 33 Greatest Starting Rotations of All-Time in Chronological Order, Apropos Nothing in Particular." The five most recent: '02 Braves, '01 Mariners, '01 A's, '97 Braves, '93 White Sox.
