eah.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 19 April 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe? Sherrill's a lock to get many saves (as many as BAL will allow, anyway), tho:
1) I imagine CC's going to straighten out (you're trading him at the worst possible time, obv), and Randy Wolf's pitching as well as he will be all year (and is only a 6-inning pitcher, and ridiculously injury-prone, and could be meat outside of Petco).
2) Hawpe's going to outproduce CQ by a wide margin, I imagine.
If saves mean that much to you, go for it. Otherwise, I'd pass.
― David R., Saturday, 19 April 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)
That's one of the better offers I've gotten for CC so far. Other was him and Papi for Westbrook, Crede, and C-Pat. This being the Bora$ league, I have to think that these trades are actually not stupid, but some elaborate psy-ops overture to the soon-to-materialize knuckle-deep negotiations.

His guys are all the sort you can get off the wire all year if you look for them, whereas CC is a top 50 fantasy player who's struggling right now. You're better off hiding him on your bench and trying to cover for him with some young guy for awhile. We're not even out of April yet.

― Grisly Addams (WmC), Saturday, 22 May 2010 19:11 (fifteen years ago)
Recommendation: Hill doesn't have a multi-hit game since May 9 and is now batting .156 on the season. He was definitely due to regress this season, but this is getting ridiculous. With a 25:20 K:BB ratio, he remains a strong buy-low target.
― Andy K, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:20 (fifteen years ago)
so in my other league i proposed a trade to a SP starved team, buchholz (from me) for denard span (from him) -- my outfield right now is a bunch of guys who are gonna hit .275 w/ homers & rbi (ethier, heyward, hawpe, marlon byrd, victorino) & i'm looking for a solid average outfielder -- i feel like this is a pretty even trade, but my friend was telling me that span was pretty worthless

denard span is the real but must suffer from some shin-soo choo disease as no one appreciates him.to bring it back to ilxor people were all NO WAY about the Jones/Capps trade which i thought was odd. then a week later found out Jones was a first half all-star last year which sort of explains it.
i was more incredulous at Prado/Span as the former is an infield switchblade due for some serious regression while Span could be Uptonesque soon.

― sanskrit, Sunday, 3 October 2010 23:10 (fourteen years ago)
^^ looking back at the box score Venable K'ed twice but I still took the league by the skin of my teeth.
Was thinking about starting an auction league one-off for ilxors and/or friends. Never done an auction before and thought it might be fun, but I don't want to distract from Therm's ILB roto league.
What's a good set up for a minimum maintenance league? Didn't Ade run one? I was thinking roto style auction, with no trades, no free agents, and no faab. Sort of like a set it and the fun would be in the auction itself and how it plays out months later. Would people get bummed about injuries not being able to replace? And how would one set up pitching scoring so active managers with an eye on their starters wouldn't have an advantage? No bench?
Any interest out there?
― sanskrit, Monday, 14 February 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

The stat service I use for the five money leagues I run (Fanball) is shutting down. Which means I have to pick another service and re-enter ~1800 players and their contracts. And thus far it looks like Fanball was the only one with a semi-modern front end (type in part of a name and it fills in the rest or gives you the nearest options), all the others require a lot of scrolling.

That's what makes it so awesome! The risk of drafting poorly is sooooo much higher.
― reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 00:59 (fourteen years ago)
so how does that work anyways? are you bidding against other teams - or is there a set price for players or what?or what.
― got electrolytes (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)
You are bidding against other teams. Poly is correct about the risk, but there's additional tension as it's a little like monopoly or eBay -- you want to deplete other team's resources. If I hate Jeter but my projections say he's worth $10 and he's about to go for $4 then I price enforce with an $8 bid.. and I might be stuck holding the bag.
The main problem is that these drafts can last 4+ hours, really more of an in person thing.
― sanskrit, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 01:43 (fourteen years ago)
btw milo z that sounds like a horrifying situation
― sanskrit, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 01:44 (fourteen years ago)
If you do in-person leagues at all, I highly recommend auctions. Much more fun, much more exciting, and it seems to involve people in their teams more than if they just drafted.
One league I made up the rules for has a small roster (one apiece at each infield spot, three outfield, one UT/DH, six pitchers) and a cap of $220. Your entry fee is whatever your team initially cost. Aside from the usual 'nominate someone you don't want to flush out the money' gamesmanship (which is totes fun), you also have to weigh whether that late-in-the-auction player is worth five real dollars or if you're content to wait for a one-dollar player. And it hurts just a little more when you're actually dropping $70 on Pujols and he shatters every bone in his body on the first play of Opening Day.
For our keeper leagues, prices increase by a set amount each year based on what their salary was last year (so a $1-5 player becomes $7, $6-10 becomes $12, etc. on up to topping out at $54). So you can keep that rookie $1 steal forever, if you want, but after six years he'll cost you $54 and from then on you can keep him forever at that. Or if you buy Pujols this year for $60 you keep him forever at that (or don't).
I don't like the free agent bidding process in the season, too complicated. We do reverse-order pickups, and any new pickup starts at a salary of $5 or $10 depending on the league.

Found Fantrax, they seem awesome, and they're half the price per league Fanball was last year.
― boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)
Also if you realize you have a shitty team right off the bat (you chickened out on buying any superstars, etc.) it's fun to try and steal young cheap players during the auction and build for the future. Only applicable if you don't care about losing money this year and you're sure it will be around down the road. I first played in one of my leagues in 1990, when I was 9 (and won! courtesy Bobby Thigpen and Cecil Fielder), so I'm pretty comfortable in assuming we can keep them going from year to year.

When I get to pick the guy who's up for bidding, I always pick guys I know I don't want at all and let other people spend their money, so I have more money left over for the guys I do want.

My other league is 8 people that I know IRL and it's super casual, 9 batting positions, points H2H, 5 bench spots, lock players for the week, and most interestingly you pick a pitching staff instead of individual pitchers. We each got 2 keepers (picked in rd 1/2) and the expansion teams got two "free" picks in the first two rounds from the non-keepered dudes. Every team looks like a separate all-star team, it's silly. Here's mine:
Rd 1, Pk 7 - Mike Trout (Keeper 1)Rd 2, Pk 2 - Matt Kemp (Keeper 2)Rd 3, Pk 7 - Ian KinslerRd 4, Pk 2 - Ryan ZimmermanRd 5, Pk 7 - Paul GoldschmidtRd 6, Pk 2 - Washington NationalsRd 7, Pk 7 - Billy ButlerRd 8, Pk 2 - Jacoby Ellsbury (yeah nobody wanted to fuck with JE)Rd 9, Pk 7 - Ian DesmondRd 10, Pk 2 - Miguel MonteroRd 11, Pk 7 - Oakland AthleticsRd 12, Pk 2 - Adam EatonRd 13, Pk 7 - Jimmy Rollins (seriously I just took the dudes nobody wanted to fuck with)Rd 14, Pk 2 - Mike MoustakasRd 15, Pk 7 - Chris DavisRd 16, Pk 2 - Angel Pagan (dropped for Yasiel Puig as a stasher, gonna pick him up again when Eaton gets DLed finally)
Arguably one of the worst teams in the league, and my first H2H opponent:
Rd 1, Pk 2 - Jose Bautista (keeper 1)Rd 2, Pk 7 - Chase Headley (keeper 2)Rd 3, Pk 2 - Prince FielderRd 4, Pk 7 - Aaron HillRd 5, Pk 2 - Danny Espinosa (apparently an accident, he got real mad when he realized he did that)Rd 6, Pk 7 - Michael BournRd 7, Pk 2 - Toronto Blue Jays (homer)Rd 8, Pk 7 - Joe MauerRd 9, Pk 2 - Shin-Soo ChooRd 10, Pk 7 - Elvis AndrusRd 11, Pk 2 - Josh ReddickRd 12, Pk 7 - Tyler ColvinRd 13, Pk 2 - Michael Saunders (canadian homer)Rd 14, Pk 7 - Pedro AlvarezRd 15, Pk 2 - Alex AvilaRd 16, Pk 7 - Arizona Diamondbacks

drafted for my annual money league which is the only league i care about (bc money) and i ended up drafting every single trendy sleeper pitcher and now i'm worried. i just couldn't stop. i even compiled a list of boring pitchers to aim for because i always ignore boring pitchers. and i ignored the entire list. this is getting to be a problem :(
Yu DarvishMatt MooreMax ScherzerTim LincecumJeff SamardzijaBrett AndersonMatt HarveyJason Hammel
well, take off hammel and add marco estrada and julio teheran and i would've had all of them
― This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Monday, 25 March 2013 20:51 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, it's through them.
I actually find it really refreshing. Way, way way less streaming/other shenanigans w/ pitching (altho sometimes people will pick up a middling team because their ace has two starts or particularly weak opponents). But also a lot of people in the league, god love em, would probably be overwhelmed if they had to know the difference between two different non-Toronto 4th starters or 8th inning loogies. The system wouldn't work if the points weren't so well-balanced between pitching & batting (or if it were roto or if you could swap out players/staffs ever day).
This is the second year we've run it though and last year was an absolute blast, probably the most enjoyment I've ever gotten out of a fantasy game, because I knew everyone and even the least fantasy-geek inclined people were completely engaged all season.
xp btw
― Samsung Galaxy SB (Will M.), Monday, 25 March 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)
and then in my points league i ended up with a really weird team bc pitchers always get more points than hitters, so if you organize ESPN's draft module thing by projected points you end up with a top 50 that includes like 35 pitchers. apparently EVERYONE else in the draft only paid attention to this and filled up quick on pitching because they don't understand how value works. so i ended up with this lineup:
C: Buster Posey1B: Albert Pujols2B: Ian Kinsler3B: Pablo SandovalSS: Marco ScutaroOF: Matt HollidayOF: Jason HeywardOF: Norichika AokiUTIL: Nick Swisher
and meanwhile my pitching staff is worse than the norm but not by much

12-team traditional rotisserie league, $300 cap - I won it my first year playing in 1991 w/ Cecil Fielder and Bobby Thigpen leading the charge; I don't remember collecting winnings as a 10-year old, tbh, so I think I might have gotten screwed. I think I've managed to win every 4-5 years since then on average.I had to throw back Jason Heyward @17, Mike Napoli@17, Billy Butler@27, some other good ones due to keeper restrictions. But I have Strasburg and Bryce Harper cheap and some other quality youth cheap - prices increase by a schedule every year, so if you keep a $16-21 player this year, he's $22 next year then $27 and on up until $52 where the price sticks.
C - Arencibia $3C - Posey $171B - Rizzo $72B - Uggla $11 - I really wanted Jedd Gyorko here but I started bidding on Uggla and I don't know why 3B - Beltre $27SS - Castro $121/3 - Alvarez $172/S - Jeter $8 - there was no one left, fuck fuck fuckOF - Bourn $21OF - Harper $7OF - Adam Jones $22OF - Markakis $6OF - BJ Upton $35 - oh shit have him in two leagues fuckUT - VERNON WELLS - lol cut him for the best free agent left
Josh Beckett - $1AJ Burnett - $4AJ Griffin - $5Dan Haren - $7Hellickson - $8Motte - $12 - hope you don't need a new elbow, broNiese - $7Parnell - $5Strasburg - $17Verlander - $27

I tend to blow off saves and try to get them during the season, but our auctions don't really work out for going with super-cheap pitching so I never quite nail down the LIMA plan/etc.
also two big roster (24 active, 10 reserve, 5 minors) draft leagues but they're boring and I only play in them because I always have. Auctions are so much better. If you've only played draft or online, find a local group and have an auction league!
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 26 March 2013 04:27 (twelve years ago)
Second one I have buyer's remorse on keeping Adam Jones @ $22 over Heyward @ $17, but I think Jones has a lower floor for this year at least.

Posey, Rizzo, Castro, Harper, Strasburg all started out in my minorsfirst year call-up, the salary is $5, goes up to $7 then up in $5 increments every year. If you pay attention to your minors, you can build a solid, cheap core. I'm jelly of the guy who beat me to Trout in the minor league draft.
The only thing that's screwed me is that we only protect 6 position players/4 pitchers max. Everyone else uses Baseball America or w/e for their minors draft, so they wind up with single-A shortstops who can't hit beyond the five or six guys who get a lot of press.

with grandy off the dl and heyward hitting better, i had a v packed OF -- those 2 + bautista, rios, de aza and aoki for four spots. and ben zobies can move over in a pinch. so i just traded rios for aj burnett w/a dude with a whole lot of pitching desperate for a OF. sort of surprised he jumped on it so quickly, sort of worried abt burnett being a million yrs old

I'm overthinknig this so much. In the finals vs. a guy I really don't want to win my other glorping league. Starting to overthink this.
7/9 of my starters are decided -- the rest of my team is "stacked" on paper but seriously having my doubts. I'm starting Trout and Harper in the OF (big trade last year & this year to get them in a keeper league, awwww yeeeeah), but I need to start another OF and another U. Who would you pick from this list?
Swisher (hot), Jupton (not so much + lots of righties), Granderson (cold), Butler (hmmmmm), Kemp (ugh), Ellsbury (injured until at least Wednesday). Rosters get locked tonight for the week, btw.
Any thoughts?
― I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Monday, 23 September 2013 16:54 (eleven years ago)
You have Trout, Harper, Granderson, Butler, Kemp, and Ellsbury on the same team? Jeez.
― polyphonic, Monday, 23 September 2013 17:35 (eleven years ago)
It's a super shallow 8 team league, and I made a massive trade near the deadline shipping out my late round goldmine Chris Davis (along with the Tigers pitching staff and Ian Desmond) getting Grandy, Jupton and Harper back. It was a pretty lopsided pull but the other guy was out of the running and wanted a keeper for next year who'd give him a big advantage (Davis over Jupton or Harper or Grandy makes sense).
Year before I traded the same guy Fielder and got Trout. Which at the time might have looked like kind of an over-pay... that one worked out. :) The others -- Kemp, keeper; Ellsbury, fell realllly far in the draft for some reason; Butler, mid-round pick that hasn't really been good enough for my starting nine (did I mention I jumped super early on Goldschmidt, too?)

at the very end of the very last games played today, every single thing went wrong to prevent me from taking third place and $125
-tulo walks instead of making an out-venable gets a useless hit, giving denorfia one last chance to make an out, which he does-pence gets the walkoff, preventing sandoval from giving me one last chance to get a hit and tie BA-rex fucking brothers loads the bases in the bottom of the ninth with a 1-run lead and fails to fucking continue failing-ron fucking washington decides to continue abusing his elderly pitchers and goes with nathan for the bottom of the ninth after using him the previous 3 days, rather than letting the young, virile scheppers get the two-inning save
and none of this would've been a problem if it weren't for PEDRO FUCKING STROP, EX-ORIOLE BENT ON REVENGE AGAINST ME PERSONALLY, giving up a useless run to STL, ensuring that there wouldn't be a save opportunity for trevor rosenthal.
JUST ONE of these things happening/not happening is the difference between nothing and $125. I NEED $125
― ^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 29 September 2013 23:49 (eleven years ago)
shld mention, this was a two week matchup, and this is what our final batting averages looked like:

I was just one home run away from $160 yesterday

dunno the stats you track, or what the people in your league value, but when i have a tough pick (esp between a pitcher and a batter) i try to figure out which one is most likely to still be available in the last pick of the first round. if you think you can grab one in the redraft, drop that one.
― Sam Malone, no relation (Will M.), Sunday, 9 March 2014 20:57 (eleven years ago)
the keepers are so pointless it doesn't matter, it's just a 3-keeper league and my other 2 are cabrera and yu. my plan is just "pick the top three players according to ADP" and because mockdraftcentral has bautista way higher than scherzer, i figured i'd take him. and then ESPN actually started drafting and scherzer's like 10 spots higher than jose (this is an ESPN league). MDC rankings are always better but i'm actually not sure who value more. probably going with jose but it's annoying.

― johnny crunch, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 14:14 (eleven years ago)
wacha/moore over ryu. i'd lean wacha between the two personally, but moore might be a better option depending on your league (ie. which one is worth more in trade value? which one can you not just redraft later?).
that said tho, i haven't mentioned werth bc you need to rule out 2 SPs... the real question is, does it make more sense to keep a pretty great OF or a pretty great SP in your league? i'd say odds are werth is the best option in most leagues, but i dunno yours.

A bit of controversy in my irl league. There's a manager in my league who has made the following recent trades:
Traded David Wright for Nolan Arenado (before Arenado's hit streak, btw) (approved)Traded Mike Trout and Gerrit Cole for Masahiro Tanaka and Ben Revere (vetoed)Traded Evan Longoria for Tommy Hunter (vetoed)
Now he's pissed off that we vetoed those two trades. He's at the bottom of the league and the guys he's trading to are at the top.
My philosophy is that all non-colluding trades should be accepted, but in this league we don't do it that way, so I voted to veto.
How do you guys feel about the veto? Are we being unfair?

― linda cardellini (zachlyon), Saturday, 6 September 2014 01:00 (eleven years ago)
in the past few weeks i've lost yu darvish, anibal sanchez, anthony rizzo, starlin castro and daniel murphy
now desperately sprinting towards 3rd place ($125) with no pitching limits so at this point it becomes a free agent free-for-all trying to take wins and K's, and among my opponent's 6 matchups today he had arrieta, lohse and buehrle. only one stinker. 40 innings, 1.99 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 43 K's. 3 wins. jfc. now i'm scared. meanwhile i started jake odorizzi (3IP 5ER) and jake odorizzi (3IP 5ER) only.
so now i'm doing something that probably isn't kosher and scooping up as many FA probables as i can with no intention of playing them, just so he doesn't get them. it isn't against the rules but eeeehhhhh

Guys I got this trade offer in my other GLORPING league and I need feedback... on the face of it it's a great deal for me.
Pts league (TB+RBI+R, +2(SB)-CS) where we get two minor league keeper slots for free. The offer I got: Jose Reyes + Rusney Castillo (M), forXander Bogaerts + Corey Seager (M)
I think he wins the minor league deal, Seager is more exciting than Castillo, but like... Reyes for Xander? Am I insane to not pull the trigger on that?

tough to look past seager. hitting .300 in june, against shaun marcum today, doesn't give you a 50% K rate (gallo -- small sample, but not out of line with expectations either) or a .074 ISO with only one steal on the year (Yunel). in fact, trade joey gallo now unless it's a dynasty/keeper!
― Who M the best? (Will M.), Thursday, 11 June 2015 15:17 (ten years ago)
Thanks. I'm new to this but my league seems pretty conservative about trading. I'm not seeing anyone doing much trading at all, and I've put up a couple of offers recently that were just ignored for several days, not even rejected.

― johnny crunch, Saturday, 4 July 2015 16:29 (ten years ago)
i've gotten a little obsessed. i got a lot more interested when i found out about some of the different options for playing. right now i play strictly 50/50 leagues, which means that if you place in the top 50 out of 100 for a contest, you win - doesn't matter whether you finish in 1st or 49th place. they have the 50/50 contests at different price levels, but i play the $2 games which give you $3.60 if you win. so basically, if you can place in the top half of the contest 55% of the time, you'll break even. i like the 50/50 games because they reward having a consistent method - i don't have to rely on luck to pick someone who has a 2 HR game, i just need to pick a set of players who will get me consistent production so that i can get into the top half of the field of entries.
a lot of other people play head-to-head games and tournament style entries where placing in the top 3 gets you a ton of money and you have to place in the top 10% or so to make any money back. i might dabble with those later but for now i'm very content to refine my 50/50 method. currently i'm winning 65% of my games, well past the 55% breakeven point.

win rule is just pissing me off so much lately late season/playoffs now. just give it to the fucking starting pitcher if he did a decent job. i really don't get it. why are umps allowed to award it willy-nilly to middle relievers who threw 8 pitches if they don't think the SP did well enough but it doesn't work the other way around? i got fucked out of two wins that way towards the end of the season. now my playoffs w/$450 prize are in somewhat more jeopardy because my wily peralta isn't going to get a W for a well-pitched game and his francisco rodriguez is going to get a W because he blew a save.

also in my h2h pts league i set a 4-year record for regular season points, then my team plopped one in the semis, and then in the "finals" (when my team wasn't counted because our league is 100% payout to #1) i would have set an all-time points record. fuck fantasy baseball

in my big money league there's no limits on pitching, at all, because the guy who runs it is an obsessive streamer, and the playoffs every year end in a ridiculous war over every starter
i still managed to pull off a 2.66 ERA and 1.10 WHIP and 235 Ks in 229 innings in the finals though (he had 241 total). i had a freakishly good playoff run, 4 RBI away from sweeping both rounds. i don't think i'll ever have a team this good again.

8 homers today for one of my opponents
this is in a league where i finished the regular season as the leader in 6 categories and second in 2 more
― qualx, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 03:47 (nine years ago)
i'm currently in first place in mine, probably gonna set the regular season record after 5 years of play, and the team that is gonna sneak into fourth did so on dozier and freeman's backs (he was in last place out of 10 before the ASB) which is... concerning
i like the dude and i was cheering for him to pull this epic comeback but now i am looking at the current 2-4 teams and going SHIT THEY ARE ALL FLAMING OUT but this dude is RESURGENT

― johnny crunch, Saturday, 17 September 2016 19:09 (nine years ago)
right there with you, desperately clinging onto Ks in a streaming arms race and trying to scrape them together without killing my WHIP
tomorrow is the last day of a 2-week first round and it's just a total streaming shitshow, it's enough that i've finally brought up my displeasure with unlimited pitching and how this happens every single year in the playoffs where it isn't about making smart choices it's just about going nuts streaming horrible september pitchers. i'm set to have 40+ starts when this round is all said and done
awkward because this league is family, the guy in charge of the rules is my cousin's husband, the guy i'm having an arms race with right now is his dad who i've never met, and his dad's on my side. i think everyone in the league is probably on my side, the problem is my cousin's husband loves streaming.
― qualx, Saturday, 17 September 2016 22:23 (nine years ago)
meanwhile this team is the best i've ever had in this league, i won 6 categories in the regular season with 2nd place finishes in 2 others (dominated in everything but HR and RBI)
and my entire team has decided to stop doing all of these things right as the playoffs began
struggling like crazy to get 5 wins because a tie wins it for me, i have ERA down but it's a race for Ks, WHIP is shaky, AVG is extremely shaky (he was briefly beating me yesterday), and i've literally restructured my entire offense minus 3 spots (both corner infield and C) to produce stolen bases, and NO ONE is stealing bases right now. hamilton went down and i had to drop him for streaming SPs, and it's been so very tough without him. i'm starting terrence gore! every day! he hasn't even stolen a base since i picked him up! i picked up stanton off the scrap heap when he started to chirp about coming back early, then he came back WAY early and ended up being a huge albatross on my bench. he's still an albatross because he doesn't contribute in AVG and SBs, the only cats i have any hope in. it sucks.
had to punt saves after winning it in the regular season because the goddamn trade deadline cut them in half. i'm usually very good about winning saves in the playoffs via streaming for vultures, but i had to give that up for the Ks arms race.
i'm just gonna go crazy about these stolen bases. i'm on vacation right now and this fucking league is gonna ruin my last day tomorrow. if these assholes don't start stealing some goddamn bags i swear
― qualx, Saturday, 17 September 2016 22:35 (nine years ago)

― qualx, Saturday, 17 September 2016 23:05 (nine years ago)
had an amazing day in the end, anchored by jon gray
but only 2 SBs, keeping us in a tie, and him up 5-4-1
i thought maybe i could pull a quick one and drop my streamers tomorrow to fill in every single batter with someone who is at least capable of stealing a base (machado apparently, MCab and gary sanchez are not) but he has 5 starters tomorrow and the lead gray gave me still isn't enough to potentially cede Ks
― qualx, Sunday, 18 September 2016 04:32 (nine years ago)
in the semifinals of my h2h point league right now. i just set the league record for best regular season ever, 19-5. third season out of five where i've finished the season in 1st place. and now once again i am getting shitkicked in the semis. granted the week is only half over but the score's 135-106, my opponent who limped into the POs decided ot go high-risk and start basically every available NY Met due to the pitching matchups, and now lol EVAN FUCKING GATTIS has hit like 400 home runs in 3 days.
my team this week: molina, votto, kipnis, seager, villar, bryant, trout, hanley, abreu (+ LAD pitching staff, we do team pitching)his team this week: gattis, goldschmidt, drury, healy, asdrubal, granderson, myers, springer, ortiz (+... you guessed it NYM staff)
the worst part is, i almost didn't have to face him at all in the semis, it came down to the last day and he could have easily finished 3rd (only face in finals) or 5th (not in POs) but of course not. fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck
ADD TO THIS THE FACT THAT I AM LOSING GROUND IN THE ILX LEAGUE AND I AM VERY CROSS INDEED
― a simba man (Will M.), Thursday, 22 September 2016 17:30 (nine years ago)
i didn't know team pitching was a thing
at least you have kershaw, he's capable of much disruption
― qualx, Thursday, 22 September 2016 17:54 (nine years ago)
mlb.com does team pitching, we transitioned to fantrax but recreated the team pitchin. it honestly makes so much sense for our league where the two-start-pitcher thing would almost certainly cause a huge points gap between the check-every-hour folks and the check-every-week folks. plus idk it makes sense! it's a v cool system actually & you don't get completely fucked if you lose a pitcher (which you always do)
but yeah... kershaw put up 20 points (MASSIVE) on monday, and i'm still losing by 30. that's how fucking fucked i am. i guess he gets another go this week but honestly i need my BATTERS to do something ffs.
― a simba man (Will M.), Thursday, 22 September 2016 17:57 (nine years ago)
ugh – i hated team pitching, but i guess it makes sense in a H2H (which i'm also not crazy about).
i'm in a crazy tight 1-2-3 battle in my other league. started yesterday in 2nd place, 4 points behind our long time league leader. my team hit 5 home run (thanks Gattis/Sanchez!) – dropped to 3rd.
― Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 22 September 2016 20:21 (nine years ago)

man I wish I wasn't stuck streaming starters and vulture saves so I could actually bench francisco lindor's underperforming ass for a day
I've considered just dropping him for drubes but there's no discernible reason for him to be sucking so hard right now.
― qualx, Friday, 23 September 2016 15:32 (eight years ago)
the six non-playoff teams aren't allowed to make moves so there's always a freakish amount of hot hitters (like drubezzzz) who never get picked up while I keep a spot on my roster for sean fucking manaea

this sounds like the worst league set-up ever.
― Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 23 September 2016 20:23 (eight years ago)
now i have to determine if i should punt saves and drop britton colome and the newly minted i guess neris... maybe neris is enough to compete in it but i'm already behind by 2
everyone says uehara is the backup guy in boston so who gets the vulture save today? ziegler. i could've gotten drubez with that spot. or roman quinn and his bag.
― qualx, Saturday, 24 September 2016 03:34 (eight years ago)
also lol the rangers are about to clinch so i guess it's time to pick up RAUL FUCKING ALCANTARA to face their b-team tomorrow, worked with chase anderson vs the cubs
my new meta is planning this shit out way in advance. eno sarris said he loved it but he's sort of gone off the deep end lately.

and indeed the rangers are throwing out the worst lineup in history today
watch out for glasnow vs the nats and anderson vs the dodgers, though anderson might have better luck with their real lineup of mostly lefties

― I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Sunday, 2 October 2016 04:07 (eight years ago)
second time i've caught him doing it. first time was years ago when matt kemp mysteriously migrated from the bench after hitting a bomb. i called him out on it on fb, he told me he had no clue what i was talking about, i gave him the benefit of the doubt and convinced myself i looked at his roster too early the first time.
13th time he's done it this season according to the TranLog. i didn't know until just now that it specified via the "(By LM)" thing so i just did a ctrl-f. he did it 10 times last year, and that seems to be as far back as the logs go. maybe a few of those were more or less kosher but i know for a fact that the one he just did wasn't.
― qualx, Sunday, 2 October 2016 04:28 (eight years ago)
i should point out that he's won the entire league 3 out of the last 5 years
last LM transaction before this was exactly 2 weeks ago in the semifinals, right after they got close

― Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 2 October 2016 14:08 (eight years ago)
i won -- second year in a row i beat him for it. his cheating resulted in him tying me in RBI but i still won 7-2. at one point i was winning 9-1 with all starting pitching categories. had 10 starts yesterday and 10 starts today, mostly garbage scrap guys, and they combined for a 3.16 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP along with 8 wins and 99 Ks. that's freakishly good isn't it? would've been even better if i'd only picked jose berrios.
not sure what to do now without making thanksgiving really awkward. and my damn dad's in the league now. and HIS dad! that's the weirdest part.
― qualx, Monday, 3 October 2016 03:18 (eight years ago)

2018: .285/.309/.529 9HR 4SB
For this league's stats, he was rated 140 in preseason and is currently rated 43 for the season.
His trend is downward, but not horrible:Last 30 days rating: 17 Last 14 days rating: 336 Last 7 days rating: 445
My other eligible outfielders are Whit Merrifield, Dee Gordon (DL), Teoscar Hernandez, Mark Trumbo, Nelson Cruz (DL?), Daniel Descalso.

i'm in a shallow auction league where after the draft i was like "lol my team is going to be the best"
currently floating in 3rd of 8 teams, and fully 33% (8 of 24) of my squad is on the DL: donaldson, belt, pollock, archer, kershaw, syndergaard, darvish, robbie ray (i said it was a shallow league)
like... shallow or not, i can't drop a single one of thes fucking guys
― challops trap house (Will M.), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:03 (seven years ago)

― challops trap house (Will M.), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:39 (seven years ago)
Archer was dropped in my 10-team AL only league (I snatched him up); but if he's droppable there you're probably safe to turf him.
― Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 5 June 2018 20:43 (seven years ago)
done, let's see what berrios can do. i was initially gonna just ride it out because i was killing my innings limit, but when half of your pitchers go down that head start begins to erode real quick

so in my other glorping league - we have a team that missed the (auction) draft and has been pouting about it all season (the auto draft left him with an abomination of a team). he was doing some weird waiver wire shit - dropping a few of his respectable players and literally benched his entire team. weird, but whatever. the commish, who is a smart, talented, decent guy knew about all this as well. no biggie. but then over the weekend this trash team trades literally his only two ok/good players to the commish – for two nobodies. trade was voted down a day later; but i was kinda of appalled at what poor judgment he exercised. he took over the commish job from me a few years ago, so i don't want to rag on him... the other team should really be locked imho. maybe he got the hint when his trade was smacked down and that will be enough... maybe i should fire him a message? leaning towards keeping quiet.
― Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 30 July 2018 20:34 (seven years ago)
is there a public place to berate and embarrass the offender? a chat room or fb group or something? i'd say that's a good start, and get the rest of your league on it... is there an incentive to tanking this obviously?
― challops trap house (Will M.), Monday, 30 July 2018 20:43 (seven years ago)
no - not a keeper league, or a cash league or anything. he's just being a suck. that i don't care about so much as our commissioner deciding making a blatantly one sided-trade with that team. i have no idea what he was thinking.
― Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 30 July 2018 22:48 (seven years ago)

in another roto league i just moved into joint 1st place today, after taking first for the first time only 3 days before the end of the season. same guy was on top all year until i ruined it! Had my WHIP been 0.0038 lower, I would have won outright. Perhaps more shockingly, had my WHIP been 0.00026 (!!!) higher, I wouldn't have finished in first.

So my team name in my other league has been WHIP Priest for a few years, a nod to the Fall song as well as the baseball stat, walks plus hits over innings pitched.

i have my AL-only league's auction draft coming up this weekend. with 10-teams putting together a full roster can get a little daunting – and bidding for all-star caliber players can easily turn batshit.been thinking about it non-stop all week, whereas i did literally no prep-work for the ilbb draft!

Seems like yahoo! got rid of roto leagues unless you run your own league, you can't just jump in and join an open league... or is H2H just that much more popular?

I want to take this opportunity to extol my pitching staff in an eight-team league I have with some friends who only watch Giants games.
Scherzer, Verlander, Kershaw, Bauer, Thor (he's been bad), and Paxton (someone dropped him!) are my vets, with Chris Paddack and Shane Bieber as the up-and-comers.
My offense is also good! I love it.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 1 May 2019 17:32 (six years ago)
Yahoo! standard H2H leagues have always had something like this:
Note: Each week, your pitching staff must total a minimum of 20 innings pitched. If you fail to reach this mark, you will lose all of your pitching games for that week.
A manager in a league that I'm in says this week he may have his pitching stats zeroed out as he potentially won't hit the cutoff this week as games with his SPs keep getting PPD.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 6 August 2020 16:27 (five years ago)
It's Thursday. He can't stream a couple of pitchers?
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 6 August 2020 16:54 (five years ago)
Yeah that was mentioned but it's a 10 manager league so he'd have to drop some heat.

...for example Jack Flaherty (#4 average pick overall in Yahoo!) has pitched exactly one game this season: July 24th which was exactly 2 weeks ago.

In my head to head league where I finished pretty much at the bottom, I finished 2nd overall (aggregate) in steals but went 1W-5L-1T.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 25 September 2020 18:40 (four years ago)
...in that category.
i am in first place by two points right now in my brutally shallow AL only league and the guy in second has been overtaking me on and off for a month now. in a desperate attempt to keep/gain points i have dropped both closers and all normal starters in favour of set-up (holds) guys and to hopefully not lose out on wins i am starting Skubel. which might be incredibly stupid since I can't afford to bloat my ERA

I was targeting Cron very intentionally in the ilx league but I also targeted Daniel Murphy and Ian Desmond when they first signed with the Rockies so...
― ✖, Wednesday, 24 March 2021 17:39 (four years ago)
love that bell and cron have come up in our various fantasy threads as guys who might be disappointing and i had them both written down as sleepers (and missed both in ilx, but it worked out)
my h2h points league team is weird and might be good? my keepers are nowhere near as good as others, we have a complicated system that makes some teams better for a couple of years (maybe i explained it before, i'll explain below this)
C - Daulton Varsho1B - Matt Olson (K)2B - Ha-seong Kim3B - Rafael Devers (KD3)SS - Adalberto MondesiOF - Eloy Jimenez (KD5)OF - J.D. MartinezOF - Trent GrishamUT - Randy Arozarena
TmPit - San Diego
BN - Christian WalkerBN - Josh BellBN - Ryan Mountcastle (KD5)BN - Josh DonaldsonBN - Royce Lewis*BN - Kyle Lewis
Min - Gavin Lux (Free)Min - Nick Madrigal (Free)Min - Brendan Rodgers (Free)Min - Wander Franco (Free)Min - Jo Adell (Free)
― Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Wednesday, 24 March 2021 18:02 (four years ago)
our keepers rules -- we look at the fantasypros rankings for batters on whatever day ends up being the "settle date" (usually the day after the super bowl) and those are the keeper costs -- so if they rank Mike Trout 1 he costs a first round, if he's ranked 11th or 19th he costs a 2nd, etc... and you have to make your 4 keepers fit into the picks you have for that year. However, you get discounts: we also have a "minors" system you can keep for free. the second you pull a player up and start him, his "timer" starts, and the next 3 years you can keep him at a 5/3/3 round discount. Also additionally you have one "bullet dodge" to keep any one player an additional one round later, in case you have a logjam.
So as you can see I have Eloy and Mountcastle as last-year-call-ups for my team, Devers is 2nd year I think (technically third, but we made a rule to not count 2019 as a year if you chose to bench a guy all season, which I did w/ Devers and Eloy). Olson was ranked in like the 6th round so he was a good deal. I had like 5 of the first 20 actual picks or something, but of course most of the good players were never even up as options. also yes we have team pitching, it's kinda nice! i took SD 3rd overall (the 1st overall pick was freeman, bc the guy who had him had too many good keepers but was picking first anyway so it's like he got a free keeper), 2nd pick was LAD and then I went SD. Picked a few good players in those first few rounds -- JD, Mondesi, Grish, Randy -- and then spent 3 rounds "picking" my keepers, so everyone after Randy was the second half of the draft. Took Kim knowing I'd probably call up Lux or Madrigal quickly this season, so you can imagine one of them is starting there. Royce Lewis with the asterisk because he'll move into my minors, drafted him to replace.

So my other league just drafted... AL only. Auction. Just added a new manager to bring the total to 9. It lasted three hours and was batshit insane. Top players and regular, mid-draft types were going for a few bucks more than you’d expect - but once we started hitting the later-round players in a normal draft, and people started to panic, prices skyrocketed. Fringe set-up guys going for $12. I had to pay double the bag price for Plesac and Luzardo, who are my #1&2 starters. My catcher is Wilson Ramos. Gary Sanchez want for $22. I saw some shit tonight.

Wish I had convinced the old timers in my old leagues to try a free form roster version - 26 roster spots, one at each position and five pitchers, fill the rest however you want.
I almost had that going with a small roster auction league (one at each position, DH, six pitchers) but it would have been interesting to see people strategize between dominating hitting or pitching or falling into the safe territory of ‘normal’ rosters.

― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 12 April 2021 23:50 (four years ago)
Ottoneu in the Washington Post https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/04/13/ottoneu-fantasy-baseball-niv-shah/
Shah added a player pool into the web app, then realized he could access stats, too. There was no longer any reason to keep their league on Yahoo. And now they could choose new scoring categories that better reflected modern baseball thinking, swapping out batting average for on-base percentage. (Later versions would incorporate scoring based on the Wins Above Replacement metric, a sabermetric shibboleth.) They began to play on Shah’s site, naming the league after a player, Otto Neu, who appeared in one game for the St. Louis Browns in 1917 but never made a plate appearance or had a chance in the field.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 19:49 (four years ago)
xp - semi-standard 5x5, we did OPS, net steals, a reliever formula (holds plus 2X saves minus blown, I think?) and I think the stat service we used had FIP the last season we held leagues. There would also have to be some PA/IP minimums to keep people from having a 0.00 ERA with 6IP for the entire year.

Like our buddy ✖, here's reason #18972340918 I hate H2H:
I got lucky with the #1 pick (Acuna) in this league but look at this shit...
Category/my team rank (of 12):R: #4HR: #3RBI: #7SB: #5AVG: #12W: #11SV: #2K: #10ERA: #6WHIP: #9
Seems like I'd be midpack right?
Wrong. I'm 4-16 and in dead last place.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 19 April 2021 05:06 (four years ago)
i hate it! i've had such a bad week in both my H2H leagues, it's frustrating because i spent more time preparing for them than most years and then 90% of it just comes down to dumb luck
i think at the very least 2-week matchups should be the standard. one week is ridiculous. week 1 i got 10 SBs and lost. this week i got 3 SBs and won. it's stupid. and unless your league has very restrictive weekly IP limits, so much comes down to which owner gets more starts.
― ✖, Monday, 19 April 2021 05:23 (four years ago)

― Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Monday, 19 April 2021 19:20 (four years ago)

― Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Monday, 19 April 2021 19:21 (four years ago)
It's H2H so 10 categories per week. I went 2-8 week one then 2-8 week two. Mathematically I should be 6th or 7th but I am just getting incredibly unlucky losing ratio cats by tenths of percents and counting stat cats by a handful, if that.

need a shrink to tell me why i keep caring so deeply about a family league run by my cousin's husband who has been using admin powers to cheat for years. he just did it again today, even though he's already beating me 7-1-2. just flipped ohtani with urshela so he can get ohtani's SB and bring him a little closer in the one category i'm beating him in (why was he starting urshela over ohtani anyway??)

Hopefully you're in a CG/SO league. When I started the ILX league in 2003 I think we had CG/SOs (or maybe that was in 2004?).
So the rando yahoo H2H league where I'd gone 2-8 the first 2 weeks, why yes I did go 2-8 in the 3rd week as well bringing me to 6-24.
So now in week 4 I'm up against the #1 team in the league (and I'm dead last @ #12)... I'm up 9-0 after one day. Nice to see some regression but I hope I can hold on.

one thing i've complained about over the years in my family league is the complete lack of pitching limits - no transaction limits, no IP or GS limits - so any team with bad pitching can just stream like crazy the last few days of their matchups if they're already losing ERA/WHIP and get wins in Ws and Ks by sheer quantity. if your pitching sucks and you have no attachment to your players, you have no reason not to. if you have a decent staff full of pitchers that are too good to drop, you basically just have to lay over and lose those categories
my opponent did that to me this week - i was winning 8-2 and killing him in all pitching categories, so he streams 7 pitchers the last two days. started today winning 5-3 in Ws, he gets 3 wins to go up 6-5 before the night game, where he has both pitchers. i have craig kimbrel. if craig kimbrel gets the win, i tie instead of lose that category. craig kimbrel is currently the pitcher of record in the bottom of the tenth. if craig kimbrel doesn't win here i will quit forver

I managed to pick up Eloy when they announced he would be starting rehab! And my OF was already stacked, so Reyes seemed like an easy choice to shop. The AL only format can be really tough, I lost Madrigal and there were no playable options for middle infield, so I’d been running Torres and Polanco out there every day.

family league has apparently reached the point of insanity with people desperately trying to hold onto relevance, have recently picked up gallo, fletcher and crawford off waivers. softens the blow of losing acuna a bit. also just traded walsh/mccullers/blackmon for matt olson which hopefully won't blow up in my face like most trades i make

― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 01:06 (four years ago)
it is a lot but i feel like my team is deep enough that i can start consolidating for upside... it's a shallow league and there's always solid options on waivers. i always want to pull off these 3-for-1 deals where i get the best player back but no one ever wants to bite
walsh has been dogshit for a month which sort of validates his cruddy statcast numbers (which i try not to put a lot of stock in but...), blackmon doesn't bring high enough upside for a starting role in a 4OF league, mccullers hurts but he's lost some spin without the goop and tends to get hurt a lot. i proposed trevor rogers first but he countered with mccullers
this is also a keep 3 league, not a big deal but olson might be a keeper. no way i was gonna keep any of the 3 i gave up

ah. so i sent him an anonymous email last week telling him to stop and included a screenshot of the logs just to show him there's a record of it happening. and to vaguely threaten him with the possibility of sending it to the rest of the league (which i'm not gonna do). he didn't respond, and i have no real way of knowing whether he read it or not (might've gone to spam, who knows). he hadn't cheated since then but it was mostly because he didn't have an opportunity to - lots of rainouts and he started running a short bench (which i thought might've been a strategic move after reading the email, cause he always keeps a lot of possibilities on the bench, for cheating purposes). but he cheated today, moving mark canha onto an active spot after he homered.
i don't know what to do at this point. i've been in this league for i think 13 years, i've always considered it my "main" league. i've won twice, i'm almost always in the playoffs. if i were going to call him out publicly the time do it probably would've been before his teenage son joined, i don't want to be the one to tell his son that his dad cheats against him at fantasy baseball. fantasy baseball in general doesn't seem like a big enough deal to start a whole *thing* about. maybe this is why my other family members (my cousin and his FIL) quit.

anyone else getting their asses beat this playoff season
― ✖, Saturday, 11 September 2021 23:36 (four years ago)
thought i was a genius streaming tyler wells in a doubleheader and he decided to give up 4 runs, which makes it my second 4+-run reliever appearance this week. that plus ryu/rogers/framber the past 2 days balooned my previously good ERA/WHIP to 5.83/1.45. i'm still somehow beating the other guy but i'm still getting my ass kicked. it isn't sustainable. i had 1 home run until last night.
also my cheating LM (facing the other seed this week thankfully) did his most obvious cheat yet - moved ohtani (pitcher)'s bad start to the bench and moved ohtani (hitter)'s home run to the active lineup. it's ESPN so you can't have both active at the same time. is anyone supposed to believe he benched an ohtani start in the playoffs? i know it's the astros but come on

My other league, I am neck and neck with the guy who’s been in first for half the season. Overtook him for one full day a couple days ago before dropping a few points. All my guys are healthy - and I’m about to get Giolitto back. I like my odds. I am hopefully overtaking him in sb and holds today.

― ✖, Wednesday, 15 September 2021 04:21 (four years ago)
annoying thing is my cheating LM instituted a rule years ago limiting teams to 5 adds per week in the playoffs, in response to me winning the league 2 years in a row in part because there was no rule or limit against streaming a crazy amount of starting pitchers at any time, which is how the league always functioned because he personally likes to stream pitchers without limits. i had already made a post in the league requesting a limit because i didn't like how every year turned into a stupid race to see who could stream the most pitchers, which he completely ignored. he only added the limit after i won the league streaming like crazy out of spite. he then had the audacity to tell my father that he had to institute a limit to prevent me from abusing the system again, and that i'm probably really angry about it. when i'm the one who was pushing for the limit in the first place.
anyway he instituted it in the dumbest way possible, by making a straight up add/drop limit instead of a GS/IP limit, or just limiting pitcher streams. it basically freezes all position player add/drops in the playoffs because everyone needs to use their precious 5 changes on pitchers. i would like to be able to drop the ice cold josh donaldson for any number of super hot hitters on waivers right now but i gotta save that so i can stream cole irvin on friday. i hate this league.

bear in mind that second ERA should probably be a full run higher than it is... he used LM powers to move 18 ER (4 different starts) to the bench

― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 19 September 2021 21:48 (four years ago)
yeah, but it shouldn't come down to that... he has montas and ohtani both going (and they just got him the lead back), if one of them blows up he'll move them to his bench. and then i'll make a message board post "wtf just happened...i've been watching this matchup with a laser focus because i need to know who i'm facing next week, why did ohtani just get moved" etc
it's all in the transaction log anyway

I’ve managed to slide back into first again by a single point and I am going to be a mess for the next 1.5 weeks. Nowhere else for me to gain points unless I get stupid lucky with SB. I basically need to stay ahead of the guys right behind me in runs, holds, and wins. In a few more games I should be good to dump my closers for a set up guy and maybe a SB-prone outfielder.

― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 25 September 2021 19:07 (three years ago)
i'd heard about dussault and wanted to check out his rosters but everything is private on NFBC. crazy that he did it without drafting youths........
contrary to that i lost my random non-family H2H money league by being a complete dumbass. came into the sunday of round 1 in a decent lead, only really nervous about losing wins. put 2 FAAB claims in for paolo espino and logan gilbert. wasn't paying attention to how many adds my opponent had, just assumed i would be able to get one of them. didn't think to even put any money on them, just assumed i would get one. opponent scoops both of them up with $1 and $3 bids and adds JA Happ too, gets a win out of all three and beats me by one. a hundred bucks down the drain because i got cheap and refused to bid $2 FAAB on paolo espino. hubris!
― ✖, Saturday, 25 September 2021 19:18 (three years ago)
i've never played that way before, where you have to bid on FAs. seems weird.
― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 25 September 2021 19:28 (three years ago)
it's interesting in leagues where there's a weekly bidding period (like NFBC). in daily leagues it's much less impactful, most teams aren't putting crazy claims in based on one game or one day. it's just like waivers except you can cut the line if you want to use a little FAAB.
― ✖, Saturday, 25 September 2021 20:04 (three years ago)
6 days to go and am back ahead again by a single point (was in second for a couple days).
things that could go right (all long shots): I gain 2 nsb on the 2nd place team and gain another 2 points on the lead. Gain 7 RBI on 2nd place team for 2 points.
Things that could go wrong (all very possible): 2nd place team gains three holds and overtakes me, moving into 1st. Another team overtakes me in era (difference of 0.05 right now) costing me a point. Another team gains three wins on me costing me a point.
I’ve already stacked my team with set-up guys. Might drop my last closer for another in a few days. Might also drop my lone bench bat for a speedier dude. I can’t really stream starters because it’s too risky for my ERA, but as long as I maintain my staff I should be ok. Last season I lost the lead on the last day of baseball and I plan on being totally strung out until Sunday keeping an eye on everything!

may look like a commanding lead but it sure doesn't feel like one. especially when my opponent only needs a tie to win and is willing to cheat at every opportunity. my entire offense has suddenly died, either hurt (starling, belt) or just completely stopped producing (bogaerts, dalbec, olson, yordan, tucker). i only have 2 adds left and i can't waste them on a hitter. my opponent's entire pitching staff seems to be having another start today or tomorrow, where all of mine have their starts hypothetically scheduled for the weekend - most if not all will have their starts cancelled or shortened. not feeling great!

i'm down to just a 0.5 point lead in my other league. on the plus side, i'm only 3 RBIs behind the second place threat after last night and he's maxed out SS and 3B. if i can overtake him there i should be golden... i might even take on an extra catcher just to get as many rbi opportunities possible over the last three games.
― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 30 September 2021 16:21 (three years ago)
well he decided to get 7 HRs and 11 RBIs today, which is 7 HRs and 11 RBIs more than i got. i don't think i've ever seen a other shoe drop so powerfully

Dude had an unholy day at the plate yesterday and jumped two points into a tie for first place with me. I can take first if his average drops or if I get a few more RBIs or SB than him. But I can lose if he gets so much as one hold while hanging onto his other stats. Today is going to be nuts!

realizing i actually have a pathway to win via pitching... i have 4 starts today vs his 1 (he was out of adds), and his 1 (morton) is hopefully on a pitch limit. unfortunately i decided to stream reiver sanmartin, who is sucking but has a cool namehttps://i.postimg.cc/rm2BCdy1/image.png

oh i have not removed my bookmark, my other glorping league has just been such a boring bummer it hasn't been worth mentioning. but i'll give my season recap!
we have pitching staffs in this league instead of individual pitchers, which works well enough -- the team's collective pitching result scores them 0-27 points a day (technically like 30+ is possible but that's like a 15k perfect game). players score for all of the regular stuff, no minuses for strikeouts. also worth mentioning -- we have a "minors" system, where you can get not-yet-mlb-players during a second draft around the irl mlb draft, slot them in one of your six minor slots, and once you call them up, you "start a timer" on them. see, our keepers cost whatever round they're "ranked" at per fantasypros, but there are a bunch of ways to get discounts, the main one being your minors callups, who are at a 5/3/3 round discount in their first second and third years. we have 4 keepers (5 next year), so it's definitely worth getting minors guys in the pipeline. we had a guy with trea, acuna, and a couple of others all in rounds like 4-6 for years.
went into the season looking at a bit of a rebuilding year -- have a strong core of keepers -- devers, eloy, mountcastle on 3, 5, 5 rd discounts, olson at sticker price minus one, and a bunch of minors players ready to get called up -- lux, wander, rodgers. started the season EXTREMELY strong due to a bunch of my picks firing on all cylinders -- my first round pick of the padres pitching looked fantastic, jd martinez was raking, mondesi was raking when he played, chris taylor inexplicably solid -- so my gameplan was kind of out the window. i was in first place by the ASB despite having a middling overall score (5th or 6th out of 10, but my matchups had just been exceedingly lucky). my plan to sell at the deadline now made no sense, but buying in didn't feel right either, so i just kinda coasted. of course, when the sticky scandal ended in the sticky ban, the padres turned into dogshit and i started losing. failed my way into the playoffs, got beat in the first round, and our finals were... well, actually i need to go backwards again for a second.
so one of our managers quit midseason. he was in the league 5 years, but wasn't really enjoying it the past year or so, and this year after going like 10-2 in the first six weeks and 2-10 in the next six, quit. we had an "interim" guy step to the plate just to make sure the team was starting healthy players etc, although he wasn'tsure if he wanted to be a permanent manager going forward. the reason i bring this up is because the finals were that guy, and the commish who has won 3 of the past 10 years (he's no cheater like ✖'s commish, although he is definitely an absolute trade beast who knows when people are weak enough to make a bad trade). def not the finals i wanted to see! (obv i wanted to see me, or if not me, there are two other teams who had dominant seasons and have never won a pennant -- they both fell in the semis). the new guy won!
what gets funnier is that the old manager was like "oh cool, so we'll split the winnings?" and the commish was like "wtf you quit" and the new manager was like "uhh yeah ok i guess" and the commish was like "don't be soft!! you don't owe him anything!!" and it was a very minor scandal i guess. new manager ended up giving old manager back his buy-in at a charity event, and gave his entire winnings to the charity. no word on whether or not the old manager also donated his entry fee, i hope he did.
that's the whole story! i don't have advantageous draft picks next season yet, but i do have an overwhelming number of discount keepers that i might flip some of -- rodgers -5, wander -5, lux -5, devers -3, eloy -3, mountcastle -3, hiura -3, jp crawford -3... and adell, madrigal, marcelo mayer, elijah green and andruw jones jr (!) in the minors ready to call up when i have the room. almost certainly this coming season i will have to pull the trigger and really go for it, and the pipeline means my window is probably a few years.

(btw im not saying the sticky ban is why the padres tanked, but the timing more or less lined up with them going from Best Pitching In League to uhh in my league *checks stats* 22nd best)

― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 October 2021 17:38 (three years ago)
ten or eleven years of additions makes it pretty overwhelming to describe at first, but week-to-week it's pretty easy because you just try to have good players locked in for the week (no in-week changes). and we had pretty stable managership for a few years so everyone was pretty up to date on it.
― Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Monday, 4 October 2021 17:48 (three years ago)

I think there’s two sets of keepers - one for majors and one for minors?
― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 03:22 (three years ago)
yes exactly! sorry i didn't see this
the "minors slots" are keepable in perpetuity for free, but once you start them, they are no longer a "minors player" -- and must be kept with a "keeper slot."
― Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Wednesday, 6 October 2021 21:18 (three years ago)
to enter the minor slot they must A) be in the irl minors, and B) never been started by any team (so like, if a 30 year old spends a rehab stint in the minors, you can't put him there). once they're there, you can keep them there forever, even if they get called up, but they aren't earning you points. luckily we haven't had to make a rule about how long they're there yet because nobody's abused it. i came close by keeping buxton in my minors for like 3 years of his major league career (i was waiting for him to get good)

Love the early season standings chaos. Could use a day like that myself (or two)

Confluence of SPs and RPs all pitching today, but take a look at the Ks (esp K/IP):

Total see-saw in my H2H league playoffs. I was up on 9-1 on Saturday morning. I woke up this morning and I was down 2-8. At first peek on today, my hitters were 0 for 17.
In the last few days, at least one of our pitchers would have a complete meltdown. Today the other manager (the commish who I've known for years) picked up Bubba Chandler... oof.
Somehow I was able to turn it around and squeak out an 8-2 victory, advancing to the semis.
