what i want to know is how you going to have a potential BOS vs LAD World Series.. with no Manny?

Amazing. Is Barry Bonds still on the Giants payroll?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 11 October 2013 04:12 (eleven years ago)

no, but will pay Zito's seven million buyout.

Bee OK, Friday, 11 October 2013 04:30 (eleven years ago)

Not quite as indifferent to this as I initially thought.

KILL MASSHOLES

Of what's left to root for, a couple of Kershaw/Verlander match-ups would be near the top of the list for me.

With the right carom and throw, we could see a 7-3.

I'm pulling for the Tigers to win but I think with Cabrera hurting and that scary bullpen I don't see them getting past Boston. I'm not so sure Boston isn't the most evenly talented team of the four left, they do the whole game pretty well.

k3vin k., Sunday, 13 October 2013 02:09 (eleven years ago)

Pull him--no way I'd let him pitch to another batter.

clemenza, Sunday, 13 October 2013 02:37 (eleven years ago)

Worked out...I wouldn't have let him stay in there. The something-something's not even an issue, since he won't be there at the end anyway.

clemenza, Sunday, 13 October 2013 02:41 (eleven years ago)

He's got the bottom of the order in the next inning.

timellison, Sunday, 13 October 2013 02:43 (eleven years ago)

I don't know how solid Detroit's middle relief is, but I don't think I'd send him out. He looked like he was really laboring those last few batters.

k3vin k., Sunday, 13 October 2013 03:09 (eleven years ago)

Not much talk from the Tigers fans who thought Peralta didn't deserve to be in the playoffs.

Andy K, Sunday, 13 October 2013 03:20 (eleven years ago)

Andy K, Sunday, 13 October 2013 11:51 (eleven years ago)

According to Pitch F/X, West called five strikes out of the zone for both Sanchez and Lester. The two worst ones were in Lester's favor.

Andy K, Sunday, 13 October 2013 13:39 (eleven years ago)

Right near the beginning, you can see Cookie Lavagetto break up Bill Bevans' no-hitter in the ninth:

Hmm that's quite the on-field celebration for 1947. Usually they'd just shake hands and run to the dugout after *winning* the WS.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 13 October 2013 15:54 (eleven years ago)

ha that newsreal is delightful

lag∞n, Sunday, 13 October 2013 16:18 (eleven years ago)

Bleacher Report ranks '47 as the 10th greatest Series ever:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/903479-power-ranking-the-25-greatest-world-series-in-mlb-history/page/17

I'm guessing the on-field hysteria was some combination of the all-NY angle, Robinson's first year, and general post-war euphoria--lots of psychic energy out there. Between Cookie Lavagetto, Al Gionfriddo, DiMaggio, and Berra, was there ever a better Series for Italians?

clemenza, Sunday, 13 October 2013 16:41 (eleven years ago)

Sanchez walked six last night; Bevens walked ten.

clemenza, Sunday, 13 October 2013 16:49 (eleven years ago)

I bet the game took less than 2:30 too.

So will Peralta continue to be the postseason PED poster boy? Bet there'll be a lot less handwringing than if it had been The Centaur.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 13 October 2013 18:57 (eleven years ago)

There's been no handwringing at all, on TV they mention it in passing as if he missed two months rehabbing an injury.

The first thing that baffled me last night was the short leash on Veras. He entered with a four-run lead in the eighth, is the "eight inning guy" (or the "seventh inning guy"), threw three pitches. And, of course, I'm not sure why you would want to bring in Benoit with the bases loaded.

That was the one-year anniversary of Valverde's blown save against the Yankees. He entered with a four-run lead.

I mentioned the other day about Verlander's career/post-season stats being very close. Looked at Ortiz this morning, and his slash stats are now almost identical:

Regular Season: .287/.381/.549
Post-Season: .284/.394/.542

Obviously, he sure picks his spots.

I'd tentatively still give Detroit an edge the rest of the way, based on (duh) starting pitching and Cabrera showing signs of life.

Agreed about the Dodgers, but I don't think the Tigers are boring -- not with three 200+ K pitchers, one of the best hitters in the game, one of the best defensive shortstops, two comically bad corner infielders, and 3-4-5 hitters who are hysterically slow/gimpy.

Andy K, Monday, 14 October 2013 16:19 (eleven years ago)

It's an expression, Morbius--I'm not saying he willfully picks them. I'm actually suggesting that his post-season record isn't quite as superhuman as selective memory might indicate (without wanting to say so, because I don't want to diminish someone who's had so many memorable hits--most of them concentrated in 2004/07, hence the casual aside).

All Verlander has to do is pull up GameDay from Sept. 21: Buehrle vs. Victorino. HBP was an obvious strike and registered as such. #BlueJays

Alright, some information is coming in. My friend was with his girlfriend most of the morning.

"Well that guy had already said a racist comment to this guy who is a Detroit fan who was wearing a Prince Fielder jersey and looks like him."

"That woman was his wife/girlfriend/baby mama and she had already been mad at him for being an ass and because they almost kicked his ass. But the homerun landed behind her but she got the ball. She jumped up in celebration and was so happy and some of us were saying 'just throw it back!'".

"Then her guy, the asshole, ripped it from her hand and threw it back and they came to take him away. That Detroit fan stood up and said 'see you later' and that ass hole fan said 'sit down trevon' which is a black name racist thing to say and so about 5 police held back that big black man and his dad, and they escorted both parties (including the poor girl who caught it) out of the park. But later the detroit fans came back as they should have and many Red Sox fans went over and shook his hand and apologized".

I'm fairly certain that the Detroit fan my friend was talking about is not in the OP's .gif, but I'll include a picture once I get it off my phone.

I showed the Ortiz clip four times in class yesterday. It really is incredible. Once for Ortiz and the drama of the moment, once focussing on Hunter, once focussing on the cop, and a fourth time for the bullpen catcher.

Ortiz obviously added to his legend (exaggerated or not). If it's possible to not make a catch and add to your defensive legend (again, exaggerated or not), then I think Hunter did too.

clemenza, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 14:43 (eleven years ago)

I think by definition calling a player who is not HOF-caliber a "legend" is exaggerated.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 16 October 2013 14:44 (eleven years ago)

C'mon...again, even if you don't agree, the popular perception of Ortiz is that he's a legendary post-season performer. (If you're conceding that that's true and just disagreeing with the perception, that's fine.)

Lots of players who aren't in the HOF are legendary for a variety of reasons: Mark Fidrych, Dusty Rhodes, Joe Pepitone, on and on and on. As someone who's regularly dismissing the HOF, you're attaching a great deal of importance to it on this one narrow point.

Funny "Hey Bill" that I'm sure will drive Morbius crazy. (James may have a slight bias here...And for what it's worth, I've never once thought of Ortiz in this way; I think of him more in terms of Orlando Cepeda or Tony Perez.)

Hey Bill, did you ever think of David Ortiz as the new Babe Ruth? By that I mean if Ruth had been born in 1975 rather than 1895, he'd have not just Ortiz' statistics but his demeanor, his build, his stature on the team...Once that idea came into my mind, I can't look at David Ortiz and not see Babe Ruth. Do you think that's a fair comparison?
Asked by: TJNawrocki

Answered: 10/17/2013
Honestly, I do the exact same thing. I think of Ortiz as a modern Babe Ruth literally every day; I'm kind of shocked that you asked. It started for me one time about 2006 when David stopped in our office...which players do not do very often...and was wearing a leather hat. I don't know the name of the hat style, but it was very much like a hat that I have seen pictures of Ruth wearing, out of uniform. I thought then that this man has a lot of Babe Ruth in him, and...as you point out...once you start thinking that way, it fits like a glove, so things happen constantly to re-inforce that way of thinking about him.

clemenza, Thursday, 17 October 2013 14:20 (eleven years ago)

I can't deny the guy has tons of personality and larger-than-life persona, and that he has hit characteristically well in the numerous postseasons he's appeared in. (Babe Ruth had some qualities I hope Ortiz hasn't emulated.)

Why he should go in the HOF when Edgar Martinez hasn't come within shouting distance, I don't know.

A couple of interesting tidbits — at No. 11 on the list in Uehara again in 2011. No. 12 on the list? Pedro. That was 2000, his WHIP was 0.737. And when you consider he threw three times the innings of the rest of these guys, when you consider that his strikeout-to-walk that year was 284-well, it’s no wonder many believe Pedro’s 2000 season was the best season in baseball history.

def the most ive ever enjoyed baseball was watching this era of pedro, only player ive seen who seemed better at baseball was bonds during those years where you had to walk him or hed hit a hr

I’m now going to give you Uehara’s numbers the rest of the season. Please hold your applause until the end.

Innings pitched: 44 1/3
Hits allowed: 14
Hits allowed (seriously): 14
Come on, how many hits did he allow?: 14
That’s ridiculous: I know.
Runs allowed: 3
Home runs allowed: 1
Strikeouts: 59
Walks: 2
OK stop it right now: 2 walks. Look it up.
Batting average against: .097
On-base percentage: .108
Slugging percentage: .152
WHIP: You sure you’re ready for this?
Say it already: Ask nicely.
WHIP: 0.358

Japan has a rigorous exam system for incoming university students. Uehara did not pass his exam. He spent the next year studying in advance of retaking the test. "It was a very difficult year," he said, "because I had to study all the time."

To make ends meet, he said through Matsumoto, he took the job as a security guard. Baseball? "I wasn't even playing at that point," he said. "My dream was to teach."

But he did read Ryan's "bible," and from it picked up some weight-training techniques that paid off in added strength when he entered Osaka University of Health and Sports Sciences, and returned to playing.

"My college was not really a baseball school," Uehara said, "so the manager told us just choose whatever position you want to play. The last year in high school, I pitched five innings and I thought it was fun. I thought pitching would be fun."

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 04:36 (eleven years ago)

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 20 October 2013 04:48 (eleven years ago)

jesus that's 3 hours out of at least four days of my life

actually 4 hours bc BOS is playing

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 20 October 2013 04:49 (eleven years ago)

Come on, you guys survived Yanks vs Phillies, you'll get through this.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 20 October 2013 04:52 (eleven years ago)

Is Flag Post the same as Suggest Ban? This dude's whining is pretty tedious.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 20 October 2013 06:14 (eleven years ago)

i'm fucking livid that this game got pushed back to 8pm. living in england, this would have been the last game i got to see in real-time, and a potential decider; i sat down on the couch, cracked open a cold one and stared slack-jawed at my entertainment devices, which all reported that the 4:30 start time i'd anticipated, and planned my evening around, was apparently just an invention of my imagination

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 20 October 2013 11:09 (eleven years ago)

4:30 was the original start time, yeah. I didn't discover the change until 4:00.

House Sharknado (Andy K), Sunday, 20 October 2013 12:33 (eleven years ago)

yah thats dumb, sux 4 tracer especially

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 12:43 (eleven years ago)

cause maybe you like the game of baseball not just baseball teams idk

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 12:46 (eleven years ago)

#lifehack only truly loathe one team (recommend yankees) then if they make the ws you can at least root against them and its still fun

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 12:47 (eleven years ago)

diamondbacks v yankees was def one of the series i liked best

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 12:48 (eleven years ago)

cosine, total heel bout

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 20 October 2013 12:52 (eleven years ago)

[i]Come on, you guys survived Yanks vs Phillies

Watched Game 1, said 'I can't do this,' stopped.

did u forget the phillies winning

Tampa Bay won the pennant, so that was a salve. (I had to look that up, so yes I have sort of forgotten.) Also rain-delay hilarity to make Selig look like an ass.

There'll be lotsa good ballgames on my computer in April, with no freezing.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:11 (eleven years ago)

(actually I think I skipped all of Yanks-Phils, it was 1999 NYY-ATL where I watched one game.)

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:13 (eleven years ago)

obv no team's fans/"culture" are currently as awful as Boston's, but root for Cardinal "values" etc no thank you.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:16 (eleven years ago)

no way boston has the best fan culture: beards, getting trashed and yelling shit in a boston accent

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:18 (eleven years ago)

whats not to love

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:18 (eleven years ago)

can't believe i've been hanging out with so many phils haters, ugh

乒乓, Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:19 (eleven years ago)

i know! its like when people say they hate philadelphia sports fans *glances over reading glasses* these people booed santa claus and kobe bryant, they are nothing short of heroic

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:21 (eleven years ago)

the only truly loathsome fan culture is the yankees cause thats just all stockbrokers from indiana talking about monument park

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:23 (eleven years ago)

Yankee fans go off the grid when they don't win

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:50 (eleven years ago)

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago)

sux bear week is right in the middle of the season, fake an injury maybe

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 15:50 (eleven years ago)

i am the same as morbs, i can't watch a sports game without a rooting interest, even if i'm just choosing one at random because i don't care about either team. if the result of the game is gonna piss me off either way why would i waste my time, enough things piss me off already, *pursue a beautiful life*

also i've never had anything against the phillies, they were my dad's team growing up and their fans at least own up to being assholes. and 2001 was a great WS! it ended in jeter crying.

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 20 October 2013 16:02 (eleven years ago)

and i usually don't have a problem with the WS bc the cards are the only NL team i really don't like. wld have no problem rooting for any other NL team vs BOS or NYY.

i do like beltran and i love koji, maybe i'll watch some games for them

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 20 October 2013 16:09 (eleven years ago)

Rooting for the Red Sox

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 20 October 2013 16:21 (eleven years ago)

yeah i like baseball so there's have to be better reasons than "both teams are gross" to not watch the world series. seems like a weird position. i mean, a couple years ago i would have dreaded a lakers/celtics finals, but i still would have watched it

k3vin k., Sunday, 20 October 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago)

my concerns re sporting events where my fav team isnt playing

1. competitiveness
2. quality of play
3. style of play
10. is teams i dont like in it (does not apply to yankees or lakers who i root hard against which is fun and cool)

can usually find someone to root for even if im not into either team tho

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 16:38 (eleven years ago)

i know there are tons sports fans who feel different, so many super hardcore sox fans wont even watch the playoff if theyre not in it, which always seemed weird to me but hey free country

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 16:39 (eleven years ago)

i mean, i apologize for being annoying, i have nothing against any of u for liking teams i hate

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 20 October 2013 16:50 (eleven years ago)

i know someone who is a snotty diehard sports fan who just hates every single team, player or "story" that comes out of espn, the only team i know he roots for is the bills, which means he also hates his own team, and it's tiresome and i just want to tell him "maybe you should just stop watching sports for a while"

^^ post obviously honoring and supporting Qualcomm (zachlyon), Sunday, 20 October 2013 16:52 (eleven years ago)

i do like beltran and i love koji, maybe i'll watch some games for them

This is how I invent my rooting interest when all else fails, I root for whichever team has the most players I like.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 20 October 2013 17:04 (eleven years ago)

lol oh man that is so sad

lag∞n, Sunday, 20 October 2013 17:18 (eleven years ago)

i would probably never not watch the finals or world series, football i think is a dumb sport but i watch occasionally just because everyone else does, i'd totally skip out on the super bowl if i didn't care about either team but there are always fun parties and food associated with that

k3vin k., Sunday, 20 October 2013 17:48 (eleven years ago)

the superbowl is our greatest and most important american tradition you nasty bolshevik
