Saw someone point out this morning that this is only the second Series between two teams with identical records ('49 and '58). As Morbius pointed out, also the two league leaders in run differential, and, extending that, the two best teams in baseball as measured by Baseball Reference's "Simple Rating System" (which makes some adjustments to run differential).

Two teams that have won too often recently. So I'm trying to figure out which team sounds better completing this statement: "I can't believe that the ___________ have now won three World Series in the past ____ years." That'll be the team that wins.

clemenza, Sunday, 20 October 2013 13:14 (twelve years ago)

^^^ based on that, it's clearly Boston, because it was always about the curse and not winning the WS for 250 years, so nobody is ready to cope with a three titles in nine years mini-dynasty.

Hey, I know it's unfortunate that two really boring teams filled out the World Series. And it's regrettable there's no WS Pittsburgh Cinderella story or lol Puig can't miss tune-in heroics.

Erin Andrews stated it best in her succinct analysis of the essentialism of postseason baseball, and I think it's a salient point all of ILB can agree with:

schadenfreude!

Scott Miller, CBSSports.com:
“Tough not to wonder how Albert Pujols will be spending the next 10 or so days at home in St. Louis. Navigating his way through a sea of Cardinals red in the aisles when he stops for bread and milk at his local Schnucks grocery store? Threading his way through the 24-hour, wall-to-wall World Series coverage with every click of the television remote? Reading Michael Wacha's life story? Hard to believe there was a time two years ago when we wondered what October would be like for the Cardinals if they dared allow Pujols to escape. Not only did life go on, but the quality of it never wavered. We also now know what October is like for Pujols, post-Cardinals: He has a lot of free time on his hands. So do his Angels . . . But for one more win against the Giants last October, the Redbirds would be 2 for 2 in World Series appearances post-Pujols. As it is, they're 2 for 2 in NL Championship Series appearances and now have a chance to win a second World Series in three seasons.”

Now that Musial's gone, I assume Gibson is the current Cardinal Emeritus who'll throw out the first pitch. If not, maybe they can get the Mad Hungarian in there.

I guess matheny hasn't committed to games 2 & 3 starters though I see wacha and kelly listed. Kelly has been average in the post-season. whip is up, era is up. a rested Miller sure seems like a third plus starter you could drop in there.

What a strange season for carpenter. I don't know how pitchers that are out for the season stay active and cheery in the dugout. if I was out for the season I'd feel like Dustin Hoffman in the pool in the Graduate. Or Cameron in the pool in Ferris Beuler. Or my uncle in the pool after another bad day at work.

Sam Miller of BP:

Victorino has developed quite a reputation for getting hit by pitches this year. He led the American League in HBPs this year. He has been hit six times in the postseason. That’s convincing. Funny thing, though:
•He was hit 18 times this year.
•He was hit 19 times in the previous three seasons combined.

He has been hit six times this October, which matches his season totals in 2012, 2011, and 2009. This is either a skill that is almost totally under his control, or one of the all-time great cases of October sample shenanigans. All six of his October HBPs have been in important situations: four times with the game tied, twice with the Red Sox trailing by a run. If it’s a skill, he wields it effectively.

There's an important principle to remember here: Before the first game of the World Series, when the teams are tied 0-0, there is no way that the series could possibly be closer at that point. But when a team wins the first game and is up to 0-1, the series couldn't possibly be closer after one game. Tense!

Do the math.

The Cardinals had one game all season in which they committed three errors. That was Sept. 22, against the Brewers. It didn't particularly feel like Game 1 of the World Series. At Fenway Park. With the whole continent watching.

Or at least the portion of the continent that was wondering why it turned off "The Big Bang Theory" to take in this mess.

But the big bang in this game had nothing theoretical about it.

Pedantic here but that was managerial candidate(!) Tom Brookens' base-coaching error -- the fact that he thought Cabrera had a chance to score, and then that he thought Cabrera could stop (with a fucking groin injury!) and get back. Healthy Cabrera would have had no chance on that play.

Danny Knobler
Baseball Insider

BOSTON -- The Cardinals weren't making mistakes, but they still weren't hitting.

They were losing again.

And then, quite suddenly, they weren't.

faaaaart!

They still may have issues, but they also have life. What's more, so does this World Series, which could still be every bit as close and every bit as interesting as so many of us expected (hoped?) it would be.

ooooh, that IS more! goddammit danny knobler, you switched "expected" and "hoped?", right? or maybe you meant to write it that way.? many of us hoped(?) it would be interesting! breaking

It wasn't David Ortiz driving in four runs with one swing, as he did to swing the ALCS in Boston's favor in the eighth inning of another Game 2. But just as that inning changed that series, perhaps this inning just changed this one.

"I don't know if you can say that," said Daniel Descalso, who was right in the middle of it. "But that was definitely where the game changed. It was a big inning, but I don't know if you can say it was series-changing just yet."

i picture descalso massively rolling his eyes at danny knobler as danny asks him if the 7th inning in game 2 changed the entire world series that is currently tied at 1-1, as close as it could possibly be at this point in the series

The story before the seventh inning began: The Cardinals aren't hitting, and they're about to head home down two games to none. One of their best hitters (Carlos Beltran) is compromised by a Game 1 rib injury, and another (Allen Craig) may not start the next three games because his foot injury may not allow him to play in the field.

...They had followed a Game 1 they all called "uncharacteristic" with a Game 2 that everyone in the Cardinals clubhouse felt was totally characteristic. They still have issues (Beltran's health as the series goes on, Craig's ability to play in the field in three games that will be played without a designated hitter), but they now have room to breath as they think about those issues.

and in conclusion, i'm= danny knobler and beltran's rib and craig may not be able to field, momentum shift, big game coming up

baseball is a game where the man stands on the pile of dirt and throws a ball and the other man hits it and there are four bases and you run around the bases and then when you get back to where you started you get a run and whoever gets the most runs at the end of the game is the winner, and at the end of the day we had the most runs and we were the winner of the game

(i) He fails to avoid a fielder who is attempting to field a batted ball, or intentionally interferes with a thrown ball, provided that if two or more fielders attempt to field a batted ball, and the runner comes in contact with one or more of them, the umpire shall determine which fielder is entitled to the benefit of this rule, and shall not declare the runner out for coming in contact with a fielder other than the one the umpire determines to be entitled to field such a ball;
Rule 7.09(i) Comment: When a catcher and batter-runner going to first base have contact when the catcher is fielding the ball, there is generally no violation and nothing should be called. “Obstruction” by a fielder attempting to field a ball should be called only in very flagrant and violent cases because the rules give him the right of way, but of course such “right of way” is not a license to, for example, intentionally trip a runner even though fielding the ball. If the catcher is fielding the ball and the first baseman or pitcher obstructs a runner going to first base “obstruction” shall be called and the base runner awarded first base.

http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?topic_id=28898650&content_id=31185453

here's the play

weird how the call was made -- third base ump made some sort of motion with his arm but then doesn't seem to do anything after that. the rules say that unless a play is being made on the obstructed runner, the ball remains live. but the runner was entitled to home, and scoring would have ended the game... so seems like he should have stopped the play. maybe that's why the home plate ump waited until there was a play being made on the runner to officially call the obstruction.

twist boat veterans for stability (k3vin k.), Sunday, 27 October 2013 05:36 (twelve years ago)

The third base ump signaled obstruction right away but once play continued there wasn't much to be done to physically stop it unless the home plate ump had jumped in front of Salty and into the path of Craig, and I can understand the umps not wanting to risk their own bodies there in the insanity of the moment.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 27 October 2013 05:51 (twelve years ago)

He did, yes.

I don't know whether it was the right call or not.

Obstruction” by a fielder attempting to field a ball should be called only in very flagrant and violent cases because the rules give him the right of way, but of course such “right of way” is not a license to, for example, intentionally trip a runner even though fielding the ball.

I've watched it a few times now, and I honestly don't think it was intentional. If the leg coming up was deliberate, Middlebrooks's instincts are preternatural. Maybe he could have made more of an effort to get out of the way rather than passively lie there, but to me, that's a long way from flagrant or violent obstruction. In any event, Boston didn't put up any kind of an argument, so I must be missing something.

clemenza, Sunday, 27 October 2013 06:06 (twelve years ago)

Go lie on flat on your stomach in your apartment and then stand up as fast as you can. It won't look anything like what Middlebrooks did. Now do it again and stick your legs up in the air first. It was intentional tripping, there's just no other reason for Middlebrooks to do that.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 27 October 2013 06:17 (twelve years ago)

Maybe he was lifting his legs to clear the space for Craig to run down the ACTUAL base path and wasn't expecting him to try and hurdle him when he was 5 feet off the bag?

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Sunday, 27 October 2013 06:23 (twelve years ago)

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said "in hindsight" he should have avoided having rookie reliever Brandon Workman bat in the ninth inning of Saturday's Game 3 of the World Series.

Farrell said he should have instead performed a double-switch with his lineup in the middle of the eighth inning.

The runner defines his own baseline in that situation, if he then runs out of that baseline to avoid a tag, he's out. But regardless, Craig definitely wasn't five feet inside the line when he stood up, watch the replay again.

Intent isn't necessary to make the call, sure, but there's no conceivable way to stand up from that legs in the air position, it just adds to the evidence that the call was right.

cameron:

The rule, as written, seems pretty clear in addressing plays very similar to this. I don’t know how the umpires, guided by the rulebook as written, could have called anything else.

The rule, as written, is problematic. Will Middlebrooks simply had no way to not interfere, given that definition of interference, so once he dove to try and catch Saltalamacchia’s errant throw, his fate was sealed.

reckless woo (Z S), Sunday, 27 October 2013 10:37 (twelve years ago)

that seems about right.

there's the issue of middlebrooks' golden legs reaching to heaven, but

The leg kick issue seems to be a sideshow. Craig’s path to home plate included running directly through Middlebrooks, and had Middlebrooks laid perfectly still, Craig still seemingly would have tripped. The leg kick doesn’t appear to be the cause of the trip, to me, but instead, the fact that Middlebrooks body was laying in the path Craig chose to run.

reckless woo (Z S), Sunday, 27 October 2013 10:38 (twelve years ago)

The rule, as written, is problematic. Will Middlebrooks simply had no way to not interfere, given that definition of interference, so once he dove to try and catch Saltalamacchia’s errant throw, his fate was sealed.

If that were true, these calls would happen a lot more often. Bad throws don't always lead to fielders flopping around on the ground with their legs in the air.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 27 October 2013 12:13 (twelve years ago)

Here, I've updated NTBT's dance ("The Middlebrook"):

Go lie on flat on your stomach in your apartment and then stand up as fast as you can. Do it again and stick your legs up in the air first. Now flop around on the ground like you just don't care.

There's a "Hey Bill" this morning from James's right-hand guy on the site, Dave Fleming:

When I first saw the replays of the Middlebrooks/Craig play, I figured that Middlebrooks had raised his legs to impede Craig getting to the plate. I figured that anyone trying to get out the way would a) put their hands under their shoulders, in a push-up position, and b) tuck their legs under, to stand up. Then I actually DID it: I got on the floor and tried to get up as quickly as I could. The first thing I did, instinctively, was raise up my feet up to a right angle, just like Middlebrooks. I don't mention this to argue the umps call: I just want to clear WMB's good name and reputation. He didn't kick his legs up to trip Craig: everyone in that position, trying to get up and get out of the way, would instinctively kick their legs up.
Asked by: DaveFleming

OK, thanks.

Again, James does have a vested interest here. I like the Fangraphs conclusion: right call, poorly worded rule.

Maybe the Red Sox win, and maybe they don't. But we're having a completely different conversation right now. And we're robbed of one of the more controversial and exciting endings in World Series history.

Ultimately, it's just lore. Excellent lore. But the Red Sox really should try to protect the baseball before worrying about those silly bases. Or bitching about the umpires."

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 27 October 2013 16:34 (twelve years ago)

one thing that's being forgotten in the wake of obstructiongate was the crappy managerial decisions by both teams earlier in the game. managers generally don't have nearly as much influence on the outcome of the game as is commonly believed, but this was one game where both managers actively hurt their own club's chances of winning.

also, cosign with this x100:

We'll get to the post season heroics in a moment but there's another stone that needs to be thrown briefly. This post season roster construction sucks. It sucks terribly. Edward Mujica should have been left off the World Series roster. Shelby Miller -- if not available -- should have been left off the World Series roster. Adron Chambers would be a nice compliment to Allen Craig at this point in time given Craig's limitations on the bases. A third left hander could prove to be useful against the lefty dominated lineup of the Red Sox. Two wasted roster spaces are an unforced error that is unacceptable.

The place for Shelby Miller to make a mark was last night after the 4th inning when Kelly should have been pinch hit for. His non-appearance further raises the specter that something must be physically wrong ... or Mike Matheny is doing a really poor job. If something is wrong, then the pendulum has swung too far on team morale by including a player who is of no value on the roster. The Cardinals may end up winning the World Series but it will be in spite of the inclusion of Mujica and Miller, not because of it.

reckless woo (Z S), Sunday, 27 October 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)

how'd ya run, boyo?

from Lindbergh at BP, on mgr mistakes:

"4. The Red Sox let Brandon Workman hit in the ninth.

This may have been the most mismatched at-bat of baseball’s modern era. Workman had never had an at-bat as a professional player. He wasn’t a two-way player in college, so it’s possible that he hadn’t been in a batter’s box since his senior year at Bowie (Texas) high school (2007). And he was facing Trevor Rosenthal, who was throwing 97-98. AL pitchers in 2013 posted a collective .117 on-base percentage, and most of them probably had more recent offensive experience. With Rosenthal on the mound, I’m going to guess Workman’s expected OBP here was… .050? I’m in a generous mood.

Rosenthal threw three fastballs right over the plate, as if he hadn’t noticed Workman was there. And in the ways that mattered, he wasn’t....

(Another way to think about this: Brandon Workman batted; Mike Napoli spent the game on the bench.)"

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 27 October 2013 16:54 (twelve years ago)

So the Red Sox were mostly giving away the inning to keep Workman in. The question is whether that was a good strategy.

Never heard of Kolten Wong before

yes, we know you are as familiar with the NL as you are foreign films. He's one of their best prospects after Oscar Taveras.

Wong's eyes were red from tears when he spoke after the game.

"I was ready to go from first to third with Carlos driving me in," he said. "Went to plant, and my back foot just came right out of me. From there, I was dead. I knew I was dead once it happened."

That's too bad, kid, but THEY STILL HAVE TO DRIVE IN SOMEBODY ELSE SO YOUR RUN DOESN'T "MATTER."

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Monday, 28 October 2013 11:21 (twelve years ago)

Kolten Wong btw

You must be under the impression I keep with the AL.

clemenza, Monday, 28 October 2013 12:53 (twelve years ago)

kolten wong will be good someday (i hope), but he's been a big disappointment this year for the cardinals. he's good with the glove, has decent pop for a 2B - .303/.369/.466 in AAA this year - and is not only a fast but a smart runner (20 steals out of 21 attempts in AAA this year).

when he came up for his cup of coffee this september, it coincided with david freese sucking even more than he had during the rest of the season. so matt carpenter was shifted to 3B (his natural position) and wong got an extended look at 2B. it was a miserable cup of coffee. he had no punch whatsoever, every at bat seemed to end in a groundball, and he also just kind of looked nervous all of the time! i mean, i can understand why, i get nervous sometimes when i'm in public and i don't even have to deal with curveballs and anonymous baseball internet assholes writing obituaries for my month-old career. but he didn't exactly project the confidence of, say, michael wacha. i'll have to check, but i don't recall him ever really driving the ball, either.

anyway, i kind of feel bad for him. he'll still be good, i think. but a lot of people were hoping that he'd kick some ass and that we could trade away david freese this offseason.

reckless woo (Z S), Monday, 28 October 2013 13:27 (twelve years ago)

Ortiz, perceiving his teammates to be somewhat tight, even rallied them in the dugout, Hunter Pence style, before the sixth inning, essentially telling them, “This is the World Series. And it might be the only chance you get.”

2. Hairy Situation: Much has been said and written about the Red Sox players' beards. But less attention has been devoted to another aspect of Boston's follicle follies: Many of the Sox have three short lines shaved into the hair just behind their left ear. It refers to the players' unofficial motto, "Three Lines, 2 Chainz, One Goal," (which in turn refers to the rap artist 2 Chainz, whose song "I'm Different" has become the team's clubhouse anthem following each victory).

J0rdan S., Monday, 28 October 2013 15:37 (twelve years ago)

i felt bad for Wong too. Cardinals offense has to do more again dead arm bucholz, anything beyond that is a lot of hand-wringing.

Cards lineup looks sooo short now. Adams and Freese look helpless. Having Waino / Wacha to win it is not a bad place to be, but it looks like they will have to pitch near perfect.

With no margin for error, Uehara brilliantly recorded a four-out save in a 1-0 Sox victory in Game 3 against the Tigers.

“To be honest, I feel like throwing up. Stomach also hurts,’’ he wrote afterward. “We’ve come this far so I guess I have to whip my body a little bit more and keep pushing myself. After everything is finished, I’m going to drink a lot of beer.’’

He noted that Detroit fans taunted him by calling him “Ichiro’’ and “Daisuke.’’

“They also say ‘konichiwa,’ ” he wrote, which means “hello’’ in Japanese. “This isn’t an insult, though.’’

I think it's been a good series -- close games (except G1) and a lot of good individual performances.

I really don't understand all the hate for these two teams. I wanted to see teams that hadn't been to the WS lately but at least BOS and STL are legitimately great teams. And there aren't really any Jeter/A-Rod punchable guys, or Ryan Howard-type pseudostars that you want to see taken down a few notches. my guess is that for one reason or another matheny just didn't use him for a while, and then it became 'well, he hasn't pitched in a month, i can't use him *now*'

that doesn't explain why he's on the roster, tho. or mujica. good thing they haven't had any use for an extra right-handed pinch hitter or two

Ashley Griffeth, an intern at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols School, was making a taco at lunch, and scooped up a pepper in the shape of the Red Sox “B” logo.

“I put my spoon in and that was the first thing that came out,” said Griffeth.

“I was like, ‘Oh my god!’ and turned to show the person behind me,” said Griffeth, 27. The sign from above stirred quite a commotion in the cafeteria. Everyone came up to take a glance at Griffeth’s taco, she said.

“Everyone thought it was a sign,” she said. “Bostonians would think that’s cool.”

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 31 October 2013 05:14 (twelve years ago)

I think the biggest obstacle for Ortiz and the HOF might not even be the PEDs, which he seems to have skated his away around better than most--it's that the greatest DH ever, Edgar Martinez, is not in there, and I assume there's a block of newer voters who would never vote in Ortiz before Edgar (who drew 36% of the vote last time in his 5th year on the ballot).

clemenza, Thursday, 31 October 2013 06:16 (twelve years ago)

Write the alternate timeline if the Twins hang on to David Ortiz (or if the Mariners never traded him in the first place.) There's a chance the Red Sox are still working on a championship drought. Think that three wins in nine seasons is annoying? Can't be nearly as bad as hearing "Curse of the Bambino" over and over and over again for the next 20 years. The Twins probably did baseball a favor. - Brisbee

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 31 October 2013 06:29 (twelve years ago)

I think most voters don't link Edgar and Ortiz together in that way -- it's not like with Rickey and Tim Raines where they always get compared (or rather Raines often gets negatively compared to Rickey). The perception is that Ortiz was the cornerstone of three championship teams and a perennial MVP candidate, it's almost like he's transcending DH'ing. Whereas Edgar is a DH who played in an era of inflated offense who never won anything.

Also the statistical gap between them is closing -- Ortiz now has a higher OPS+ than Edgar, and will soon pass him in virtually all the important counting stats.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 31 October 2013 08:38 (twelve years ago)

well, at least St Louis lost.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 31 October 2013 11:07 (twelve years ago)

It'll be interesting. I think a lot of voters will look at them exactly as you say, but I do think there will be enough voters supporting Martinez (and who might be reluctant to put two DHs on their ballots) to keep Ortiz below 75%, especially when combined with a small but not completely negligible PED factor. (If I had to guess, I'd say that those who'd vote for Martinez are exactly the voters who wouldn't care about PEDs anyway, whereas more traditional voters, the ones who'd be more inclined to vote for Ortiz, might, or at least some of them might.)

You must just be looking at Ortiz's Boston years: for their careers, Martinez is ahead in OPS+ 147-139. (Admittedly, what Ortiz did in Minnesota is peripheral to his candidacy.) In WAR, Martinez has a big edge, 68.3-44.2. But again, anyone who puts great weight on Ortiz's post-season performance is likely someone who doesn't pay a whole lot of attention to WAR.

I'm doin' a lot of speculatin'-on-a-hypothesis there, I know.

clemenza, Thursday, 31 October 2013 12:32 (twelve years ago)

What is the general perception of where the inflated-offense era begins and ends? To me, Ortiz's four monster years (2004-2007) come at the tail end of the same era (which starts in either '93 or '94), but maybe it had already ended by then, I don't know.

clemenza, Thursday, 31 October 2013 12:50 (twelve years ago)

You're right, I was looking at his OPS+ in Boston, not his career.

I don't understand the difference in WAR, considering how close they are in OPS+ (and OBP, Edgar has 30 points on Ortiz but I don't see how it adds up to a 25 WAR difference).

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 31 October 2013 13:22 (twelve years ago)

edgar played in a worse environment for hitting and has a couple dozen walks per season on ortiz, which is where much of the difference is. that extra OBP counts for quite a bit in the batting runs formula

this team isnt exactly loaded w star power, the best players are a 38 y/o dh and a cast off closer, they hit terribly and like half their playoff games were decided by one run yet they dont have a single dominant starter, this whole playoff run was very pulled out of their asses and super easily couldve gone the other way

― lag∞n, Thursday, October 31, 2013 12:02 AM (13 hours ago)

any playoff run could go either way thats how the baseball playoffs work, the team led the league in run differential, had great starting pitching and the best closer in the game, have one of the ten best hitters in the game and great players up the middle, i mean given the way last year turned out you could say it was surprising in retrospect but there was no magic, the best team won

need a Cinderella team in the WS next year, badly. What's the point of overlong October Madness otherwise?

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 31 October 2013 17:43 (twelve years ago)

i mean like the baseball playoffs can go either way that just how it works, wow really, but was this playoffs for the red sox more or less either way-y than usual, recall them having one hit through the first 15 innings of the alcs before ortiz got the grand slam

sure the sox lead the league in run differential, but was this to be expected based on their roster, did anyone at all predict this before the season, was there a greater than usual chance of reversion to some sort of -talent-mean

and did they have great starting pitching, they got great starting pitching, but all three teams they faced in the playoffs undoubtedly had better starting pitching than them

their strength was more offense and bullpen during the regular season, their bullpen came through bigtime with a bunch of no names who are now being painted as inevitable, but their offense really fell apart hugely

so they won in an unexpected way with an over achieving roster in a particularly fraught manner and now everyone is all of course they were gonna win its obvious you can tell by the fact that they won which is kinda true but basically not that insightful or intersting

this is sort of an interesting discussion--they never played an elimination game, and they beat the cards real good in two of their four wins, but there was some living on the edge for sure--idk how many times fox showed that graphic of all the dudes who were like 1/10 but their one hit drove in three runs and won the game.

the pitching discussion is interesting too--the general consensus i think was that the sox had a sort of deep/flat rotation while they kept going up against teams with a couple of clear aces. conventional wisdom says in a short series the aces are an advantage (while the sox couldve legit started three or four guys in any order after lester) but it didn't work out that way.

What would you consider to be Matheny's major managing mistakes during the World Series?

Klaw (1:17 PM)

Leaving his starters in too long. Very consistently wrong on that point. The roster construction issue, where they played the whole month with a 23-man roster (the rules let you take 25), isn't an in-game mistake, and I don't know how much is on Matheny and how much is on the front office. It is, however, an interesting datum in support of the argument that you can get through October with a 10-man staff.

He might be on the opponent's team, but man is Carlos Martinez (aka Carlos Matias) fun to watch. Besides his incredible pitches, I enjoy how badass he looks. Shame on the Sox FO for letting go of him due to some fake-name contract-voiding shenanigans. The scout who found him must have lost his mind when this went down.

Some stats I found interesting: the Cards outhit the Sox 45 to 41 in the Series, though the Sox scored almost twice as many runs (Cards 14, Sox 27). The two teams had nearly the same amount of opportunities to hit with two outs and runners in scoring position, but the Cards hit .159 in such situations (3 hits in 19 instances) while the Sox hit .500 (10 hits in 20 instances).

Those intentional walks to Ortiz:

Always thought the same about Bonds those few years. I know he was putting up numbers that were unheard of, but the intentional walks seemed needlessly panicky.

Let me rephrase that, because I know comparing Ortiz in a short series to Bonds over a full season (or to what he'd done over the past three or four seasons) is weak. The three years where Bonds went 68/61/120 in IBB--in terms of risk/reward, wouldn't half that many have been more mathematically sound? I'm sure someone must have studied this.

Excerpt from the Posnanski post clemenza posted:

The Cardinals completely bought into what a man had done in 15 measly at-bats. They knew how good David Ortiz was before the series started. Suddenly, they believed he was actually much better than that. They threw their entire playbook out the window based on 15 at-bats. Instead of respecting David Ortiz for the player he really is, they worshipped him as an immortal and brought out a self-destructive intentional walk strategy based on a tiny sample size and the folklore of the World Series stage.

I think Posnanski gets a bit carried away here. I agree that the IW is a questionable strategy (esp. in hindsight after a 6-1 result), but you don’t need to “worship” Ortiz as an immortal or be blinded by “the folklore of the World Series stage” to seriously consider it in this situation. It’s not just the size of the sample that matters, I would argue, but also its recency. The sample wasn’t just picked out at random from some period of time in Ortiz’s career, or even in the 2013 season, but from the past several games –with as yet no evidence to suggest that the trend was abating. Unless you don’t believe in hot and cold hitting streaks at all, you should put some weight on the recency of this sample. Even if we recognize that some of law of averages would catch up to Ortiz at some point and put a halt to his hot streak, there were no signs of that happening yet: i.e., there was no evidence for disregarding it. If I’m a manager, those “15 measly at-bats” with the .733 average (compared to the .156 for the rest of the team) might be a small sample, but they are at least as valid a basis for decision-making as the .308 average Ortiz posted for the entire 2013 season (if that’s the average Posnanski would have based his decisions upon… it’s not clear).

you know this is exactly the opposite of sabermetrically grounded thinking, right? how can you say ~20 PA is "at least as valid" as ~600?

One huge factor in the rationale of the IBB is not so much the guy you're BBing but the guy you're getting to.

In the ALCS game 2, Ortiz had Mike Carp batting behind him. Carp was hitless the entire ALCS (and in retrospect the entire 2013 postseason).

More like Mike Crap imho.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 1 November 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)

I think this 2010 BP article by Russell Carleton is free for non-subscribers.

If performance is more affected by a batter’s "hotness" or "coldness," then that coefficient should jump out and be very significant. If it’s more due to a batter’s overall talent level (and the talent level of the pitcher whom he’s facing), then that coefficient should predominate.

(My analysis was) an overwhelming victory for "overall performance." And it was the type of overwhelming that would come from the question: Whom do you want pitching Game Seven for you, Roy Halladay or Will Carroll? Statistically, there was no contest in any of the three regressions.

Still, something interesting did happen. While "overall performance" was the far superior predictor of events, OBP in the recent past was still a statistically significant predictor (in all three denominations of PA.) So while overall performance might be the better predictor, there’s still some effect for streakiness....

There are several reasons wny the "hot hand" theory persists despite such evidence. The usual caveats that people infer far too much from a small sample size apply. Another is that believing in the predictive power of streaks means that you can give yourself the illusion of knowing the future with only a small amount of data, and that’s a very comforting thought. But there’s something more. Why are people so certain that a hot hand will continue to be hot, and why does the hot player himself say things that suggest that his ability to see and hit the ball has actually gotten better over the last few days?

For one, a hitter usually says these things in the post-game interview, after the fact. People often report that they "knew it was gonna happen" after an event, which makes them look smart… because the event that they were sure about just happened. When people are asked how sure they are of something happening beforehand, they rate themselves as less sure. It isn’t rocket science as to why.

Another factor is that people are very bad at what’s called introspection, which is the ability to monitor what’s going on inside themselves and are easily influenced in their perceptions by outside forces. In general, humans over-estimate their ability to understand their behaviors. As an example, there was an experiment in which people were given word pairs to learn. For some of the people, one of the word-pairs was moon-ocean. Another group had that one replaced with some other non-descript word pair. When asked what their favorite detergent was, 90 percent of the group that had moon-ocean picked (you guessed it!) Tide. It’s fairly clear why it happened, but when asked to explain it, the people in the group reported that they didn’t know why they picked it.

Finally, things that happen recently, particularly things that are emotionally charged, like a great performance which wins a game, are very much in people’s minds when reckoning the probabilities in a situation. Going back over the totality of a player’s career (or at least the past year or so) isn’t going to be as relevant because that sort of thing is boring. But it’s the better predictor.

There is psychology at work here, but it’s not powering actual meaningful changes in performance. Instead, it’s powering the brain wanting to believe in the hot hand and then going back and reconstructing events so that they fit with the desired theory. It’s backward logic, and backward logic is dangerous.

you know this is exactly the opposite of sabermetrically grounded thinking, right? how can you say ~20 PA is "at least as valid" as ~600?

Because of the recency, plain and simple. Ortiz was in the midst of a red-hot streak, and to disregard that evidence would be foolish. We can argue about the relative validity of 20 PAs vs 600, and at the end of the day I might end up conceding that the former shouldn't be accorded as much weight as the latter, but my basic point is that recency(again, I stress: with no signs of a break in the pattern) should be worked into the equation.

"Not much" of a factor, but still "statistically significant" (Carleton) is quite different from "not-a-factor-at-all-and-if-you-consider-it-you-believe-in-witchcraft" (Posnanski).

I don't think "recency" should be considered in the abstract either, though. It's not just recent performance that Matheny is considering in the case of Ortiz. It's recent performance against a specific pitcher. To disregard how Ortiz handled Wacha in Game 2 would be to disregard key evidence.

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Friday, 1 November 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

While "overall performance" was the far superior predictor of events, OBP in the recent past was still a statistically significant predictor (in all three denominations of PA.) So while overall performance might be the better predictor, there’s still some effect for streakiness....

so basically you take someone whose overall performance is excellent, add in the fact that their recent success is a statistically significant factor, and you get david ortiz in the world series. this is not like if mike carp had been hitting .600 and everyone was suddenly screaming that you have to ibb mike carp.

the only argument against issuing an ibb to him in those scenarios in game 6 is if you think the cards should have actually tried to get him out (i.e. throw him some strikes). even if they didn't ibb him they wouldn't have given him much to hit unless the pitcher made a mistake. so this whole thing is dumb.

call all destroyer, Friday, 1 November 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

recency means nothing. it is not a statistically significant factor. there is no such thing as a hot streak, in any sport. this question has been studied and answered. there is the APPEARANCE of a hot streak.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 November 2013 16:25 (twelve years ago)

We would expect our hot hitter to get an extra hit every few thousand plate appearances over our cold hitter. So, strictly speaking, the effect for streakiness on a hitter’s performance is not zero, but it’s not important either. (The results were similar for the 25 and 100 PA samples.)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 November 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

there is such thing as a hot streak but it is not predictive of the continuation of itself

Again, Carleton writes:

OBP in the recent past was still a statistically significant predictor (in all three denominations of PA.)

And I said above, what Matheny is dealing with here isn't just recent performance, it's recent performance against the same pitcher.

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Friday, 1 November 2013 16:35 (twelve years ago)

It's recent performance against a specific pitcher

This means even less. All batter-pitcher histories are SSSs, except in the unusual case of, oh, Derek Jeter vs Jamie Moyer, where by the time you get 15 years of data, they aren't the same players they were at the beginning of the sample, so that doesn't mean anything either.

The Red Sox should not have been allowed to touch a drop of champagne until they had each been tested. The timing stinks, but it would be one way to rid baseball of the remaining stench of drug cynicism. If nothing else, baseball needs to be able to say its champions are clean.

But it can't, so it won't, so we'll continue to wonder about the wonder that is David Ortiz. It's not fair, but it's baseball, the sport of ghosts, the Boston Red Sox battling them still.

boston fans would take over my park every game and purposely make enjoying the game as hard as possible for baltimore fans. the orioles already did that enough! boston fans came in after 2004 (and only after 2004) to be assholes to us, to start fights with us, to basically spend 3 hours jerking off to 2004. i've got no respect for anyone who comes into an opposing team's park to act like it's their own, i've definitely got no respect for fans who do it en masse, without even learning like a thing about the 800 years their team lost. lots of us like to think these aren't "boston sports fans" but "idiot fucking bandwagoners and then a bunch of rich boston sports fans who come down every series and go along with all the asshole bandwagoners", but you should at least be aware that outside of boston red sox fans are rightfully loathed and deserve to be spat on

FWIW, I saw a bunch of Red Sox vs Jays games c.2000-2003 (I made it a point to see Pedro pitch whenever I got a chance) and Red Sox fans were definitely the worst in terms of showing up en masse, taking over the park and generally acting like dicks. Although TBH I was more embarrassed for Jays fans who would sit on their hands and allow this this to happen. I'm not saying you should get in fights with the visiting team's fans but show some pride and stick up for your team. That's never been Toronto's style, unfortunately (unless it's a Leafs game).

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 2 November 2013 13:01 (twelve years ago)

And I said above, what Matheny is dealing with here isn't just recent performance, it's recent performance against the same pitcher.

― never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous)

v. likely true. Every team has looked over the heat maps and pitch-by-pitch breakdowns for every opposing hitter, so if the scouting report says you need to throw Ortiz breaking balls on the inner half of the plate (so he'll hit GB's into the shift). If you've got a pitcher who's been occasionally missing his spots and leaving breaking balls over the plate, or generally doesn't fare well pitching inside to LHB's, then it could make sense to IBB Ortiz and pitch to a guy who's weaknesses line up with the pitcher's strengths.

If it's the third inning then maybe you issue the IBB and focus on the guys your pitcher can get out, but if it's the sixth or seventh then you need to play matchups and of course Matheny never figured that out.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 2 November 2013 13:13 (twelve years ago)

so *suppose* the scouting report says you need to throw Ortiz breaking balls on the inner half of the plate

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 2 November 2013 13:14 (twelve years ago)

IOW, it's more like "our scouts and stat guys went over all the data and our shit just isn't working with this hitter, so we give up" rather than "he's MAGICAL, let's walk him".

I grew up in Boston and still have much fondness for it and the sox, but fwiw, I visited this summer and went to a sox game for the first time in at least a decade and almost got into a fist fight with someone within minutes of entering fenway.

Moodles, Saturday, 2 November 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)

this is merely the cerimonial fist fighting of the returning fan

lag∞n, Saturday, 2 November 2013 19:14 (twelve years ago)

I guess so, huh?

It was a really crazy situation. I was walking with my brother to our seats carrying a fully loaded italian sausage and a beer when an older dude suddenly tumbled down the stairs and lay unconscious in front of us, possibly from a stroke or something. We were moving to get around him and find an usher to help him out and a crowd started forming. My brother, in a clumsy and poorly thought out move, decided to vault out of the path and up into some empty seats to get out of the way quickly, but in jumping up, caught my sausage and beer with his flailing foot, spilling them everywhere and getting a bit of beer on a guy sitting nearby. The guy started cursing out my brother, and in the heat of the situation (also pissed that I just lost $20 worth of food and drink), I started cursing back. The whole thing quickly escalated until my brother dragged me away back to our seats.

The thing is, none of this kind of stuff ever happens to me. I don't go around picking fights with people. I definitely think Fenway played a strong role here, not unlike the Overlook hotel.

i blame bob marley/shane victorino

lag∞n, Saturday, 2 November 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)

hearing that Bob Marley song over and over again definitely didn't help my state of mind, plus the sox lost to the rays

now that i think of it 2011 was so pathetic for boston it completely negates every future WS win for the sox, so i'm good

this has been therapeutic, thread

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Monday, 4 November 2013 01:54 (twelve years ago)

that's pretty cool, cad.

i met up with a couple of friends on the esplanade and we watched the boats go by. strangest thing that happened to me at the rally was a guy who upon spotting me walking in my crutches & stormtrooper-style brace (i broke my leg in late august), roared out "yeah, BOSTON STRONG!! that's what i'm talkin about!", then asked if he & the rest of his mildly drunk crew could take a group photo with me in the middle, to be posted on his blog ("i'm trying to capture the spirit of the day", he said). i consented, and chuckled as arms were draped over my shoulders.
