Sabean got the team back together +/- former A's starters: The 2014 San Francisco Giants

Larry Baer reported the Giants have sold 2.6 million tickets for 2014 and could reach 3 million by Opening Day. He expects the team to sell out every game again this year.

speaking of former A's starters, poor Zito it appears no one what him.

Barry Zito plans to take some time off, but he isn't retiring.

Curiously, almost nothing was written about Zito this winter, and the reason for that is there's no evidence he actively sought a job. Just the same, Zito isn't ready to call it quits, either, according to people in the know.

There was an early suggestion in a story about Zito taking time off to surf by Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area. Baggarly hypothesized it was possible Zito may take 2014 to "reboot." And that appears to be the case.

There's no word of anything physically wrong with Zito, who had a rough year in 2013 (5-11, 5.74) after bouncing back to post a stellar 15-8 campaign in 2012, when he helped the Giants win a second World Series title in three years, winning the key Game 5 of the NLCS at St. Louis that catapulted San Francisco back into the Series.

Zito is 165-143 with a 4.02 ERA for his career, all performed in the Bay Area with the Giants and A's. The Giants declined an $18-million option for him in 2014 but he still made $126 million on that seven-year deal with San Francisco.

Zito is just 36, so there may be time for yet another comeback if he decides to try it.

The 17th annual Forbes make-the-owners-cringe edition is out with estimates of all teams’ values and revenues, and the Giants are bursting with wealth. They’re among five major-league teams worth $1 billion, ranking fifth on the list of most valuable franchises.

Right behind the Yankees ($2.5 billion), Dodgers ($2 billion), Red Sox ($1.5 billion) and Cubs ($1.2 billion).

For the Giants, it’s a 27 percent increase in value in one year, the highest in the majors, according to Forbes.

If that’s not enough, the Giants’ primary owner, Charles Johnson, is baseball’s richest owner. Forbes estimates his worth at $7.5 billion.

According to Forbes, the Giants had $316 million in revenues and $53.3 million of operating income, the third most in baseball. The magazine noted they had the third-highest attendance despite a 76-86 record, their worst since 2008.

For as high as the Giants rank in value, their TV deal is only ninth among the 30 teams. Their deal with Comcast, according to Forbes, includes an annual rights fee of $70 million and equity stake of 30 percent.

See, the Giants almost won another game against the Rockies on a walk-off inside-the-park homer. That would have been ridiculous. The odds of that happening in consecutive years are roughly the same as seeing Clint Eastwood in a Bed, Bath, & Beyond in Bakersfield, then seeing him in a Bed, Bath, & Beyond in Tulsa a year later. He likes scented candles, but that would be ridiculous. Two consecutive years with a walk-off inside-the-parker would have been just as ridiculous.

Puig crushed a Madison Bumgarner fastball out to dead center, and reacted a tad too much to the Giants’ liking. He tossed his bat a few feet up the third-base line, took a little time getting out of the batter’s box and did not exactly sprint around the bases.

Individually, nothing was flagrantly over the top, but perhaps collectively it seemed too much for San Francisco.

As Puig rounded third and approached the plate, Bumgarner stepped forward and said something to him, and it’s probably safe to assume it wasn’t to compliment him on how nicely he filled out that uniform.

Puig answered back in kind and the two exchanged a few more words as Puig approached the plate, hands held outward to the left-hander in one of those what’s-your-problem gestures.

Catcher Buster Posey added a comment and the entire umpiring crew moved forward as both managers came out of the dugout. Posey appeared to say something to Mattingly, who quickly responded, but things did not escalate.

Mattingly, however, was clearly still miffed about the situation and apparently let his displeasure be known to homeplate umpire Will Little, who very quickly ejected him. It was Mattingly’s first ejection of the season.

Meanwhile, almost lost in the testiness was the Dodgers again falling flat against the Giants. The defeat dropped them 4 1/2 games back of the Giants in the National League West and left them only one game above .500 (19-18).

A sweep would be a great double blow of putting them at .500 and well... a sweep.

Tim Hudson, the Giants’ best starter in 2014, will not take his regular turn against the Marlins on Friday night due to a strained left hip, manager Bruce Bochy said, adding that the injury is not deemed serious and the Giants do not plan to place Hudson on the disabled list.

Hudson felt pain while pitching in Sunday’s 7-4, 10-inning victory against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Bochy removed him after six innings with the Giants leading 3-2. It was the first time all season that Hudson did not finish at least seven innings. Bochy said today the hip was the reason.

Matt Cain celebrated his first win since he won at Miami on Aug. 17, 2013 and his first in San Francisco since a July 20, 2013.

Buster Posey’s not in the lineup tonight because of nerve damage in his lower back, caused by a “funky swing I took” in Sunday’s game.

“I really don’t think it’s anything super serious,” said Posey, who guessed he’d miss a couple of days.

The Giants play a three-game series at Coors Field.

Posey said he could pinch hit, and manager Bruce Bochy didn’t rule it out.

“The swing kind of felt funny, then (the back) got a little stiff after the game and yesterday,” Posey said moments ago in the Giants’ clubhouse. “All of us deal with stiff backs a lot of times. I don’t foresee it being an issue more than a couple of days. Just try to get it to calm down a little bit.”

Asked if he’d play first base when he returns to the lineup, Posey said, “I figure I’ll go back to catching. I haven’t even considered that.”

Bochy is confident Posey will return soon and said the Giants would have made a roster move (calling up a catcher) if they believed Posey couldn’t catch in the next two or three days.

i see Hunter Pence got his scooter back

Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said a group of people brought the scooter to AT&T Park Wednesday and turned it into the officers there. He is unsure about what time the return took place, or if it actually happened during game time.

He said police are treating the scooter as “found property” because Pence never reported it stolen. None of the people who returned it is being investigated in its disappearance.

After the Giants beat the Cubs 5-0, reporters gathered around Pence’s locker for the latest scooter scoop. Pence thanked everyone involved for the scooter’s return, including Batkid “for keeping the streets of San Francisco clean.”

The commissioner’s office just announced the Madison Bumgarner has won National League Pitcher of the Month, the first Giant to get that honor since Tim Lincecum in June, 2009. Bumgarner was 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA and a majors-leading 48 strikeouts in six starts.

Bumgarner bested Jeff Samradzija, Jorge De La Rosa, Zack Grienke and Tyson Ross, the other four pitchers to receive votes.

In a twist, Bumgarner was joined in the honor by Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, who was named the (position) player of the month in the National League. Bumgarner and Puig exchanged angry words at the plate when the Dodgers star pimped a homer at Dodger Stadium in early May, and afterward Bumgarner provided one of the best quotes of the month.

Manager Bruce Bochy talked to the struggling right-hander on Sunday and informed him that the club would go into committee mode, with Jeremy Affeldt and Santiago Casilla receiving most of the save situations as matchups warrant. Romo could pitch in the sixth or seventh inning, Bochy said.

Romo blew his third save in his last five tries Saturday when Cincinnati’s Brandon Phillips cranked a two-run home run in the Giants’ eventual 7-3, 11-inning loss. Romo has allowed 15 runs over his last 15 innings and his six home runs allowed already match his single-season high.

UPDATE, 5:00 p.m.: The Giants are about to make a bold move in a bid to strengthen their team.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Marco Scutaro, who has missed the entire season with a bulging disk in his back, will be activated Friday or Saturday after playing nine innings for Triple-A Fresno on Thursday. More than likely, Scutaro will bat second when he starts at second base.

Scutaro has only three hits in 19 rehab at-bats with the Grizzlies and the Giants’ entry in the Arizona rookie league team, but Bochy said that does not matter.

Would the Giants bring Scutaro back now if they had not lost 20 of their past 27 games? Possibly not. But they have been in a monthlong spiral and feel the 38-year-old can help on the field and off. Even at less than 100 percent, they feel, Scutaro can boost a weak bench. At best, if his back is up to hit, he can start several games a week.

Bochy said batting coach Hensley Meulens spoke with Scutaro today and heard some optimism that Scutaro can play several days a week.

“That’s good news,” Bochy said. “We’ll wait and see Friday after he plays nine innings tomorrow.”

Bochy met with general manager Brian Sabean to discuss a corresponding move. They have a clear choice with polar implications.

They can designate Brandon Hicks, who largely has become invisible, and let rookie Joe Panik apprentice with Scutaro. Or they can take advantage of Panik’s minor-league options, return him to Fresno and go with a Hicks/Scutaro combination.

When they activate Scutaro, Friday or Saturday, depends on how his body feels after he plays the entire game Thursday.

Meanwhile, Angel Pagan is expected to resume baseball activities in Arizona tomorrow.

The Giants made no deal before Thursday’s trade deadline, and general manager Brian Sabean wasn’t regretful.

“I’ve done this a long time, and I feel as good about not getting something done as any year we’ve done something,” said Sabean, noting teams wanted more than he was willing to surrender.

Down to the final hours and minutes before t?0he 1 p.m. PDT deadline, Sabean said, he was pursuing two players to fill the void at second base, a weak spot for the team all season. Dan Uggla was the latest to give it a whirl, but his Giants stint is over after he went 0-for-11 with six strikeouts and three errors.

He didn’t travel with the team to New York and is considering an offer to play for Triple-A Fresno. A roster move is pending.

Sabean wouldn’t say which players he pursued. The Giants have been linked to Emilio Bonifacio, who was traded from the Cubs to the Braves, and Asdrubal Cabrera, who was sent from the Indians to the Nationals.

“We just couldn’t execute the deal based on what the ask was,” Sabean said. “A lot of that had to do with too many buyers in the market, and we’d do the same thing if we were on the other side of the fence. (Teams) held out to the very end to get what we weren’t willing to give up.”

So what’s the second-base situation going forward?

“It’s going to be a work in progress. It might be series to series,” said Sabean, not ruling out trade activity in August when players must clear waivers before being moved.

On the team as a whole, Sabean said, “I’ll answer this as it fits my personality, I don’t know how close we are to winning the division title or for the wild card. Our biggest barometer is when we get our two players back. We’ll see how we flip the switch then.”

He was referring to Brandon Belt and Angel Pagan and said both could come off the disabled list during the upcoming trip.

Yeah I mean, we've been pretty good considering how hard we got hit by the injury bug (Cain, Belt, Scutaro and Pagan). Two of those injuries were fairly predictable, but I'm glad we still have Susac, Crick, Beede and Mejia.

not in general, but its implementation seems awfully haphazard. there, flowers *was* blocking the plate without the ball -- when the runner was halfway up the line. he had the ball by the time the runner arrived. seems akin to calling fielder's interference for standing in the baseline when the runner is nowhere near.

catchers need to put their left foot at the back point/stand behind the plate, i guess. they'll still get hit on a slide, but won't be purposefully creamed.

By the letter of the rule, it was properly applied. Tyler Flowers was clearly blocking the plate before he had the ball and Blanco had to slide around him, but it's also similar to the play in Miami two weeks ago, because the runner clearly was going to be out.

Tim Lincecum is being removed from the Giants' starting rotation and replaced by Yusmeiro Petit, manager Bruce Bochy said Monday, and the switch will be open-ended depending on how both pitchers perform in their new roles.

Lincecum will move to the bullpen and could be available as soon as Tuesday. Petit, who is working on a remarkable string of 38 consecutive batters retired, will take Lincecum's start Thursday against the Colorado Rockies.

"We're going to give Timmy a break," said Bochy. "More than anything, he need to clean up his delivery a little bit. He was out of sorts, and he's been working on it hard. Sometimes you can tinker a little bit too much with it. We just want to get him cleaned up and get him back to where he was not too long ago."
