Just watched the opener archive, 4 hours late... Arizona needs the NL to pass an emergency DH rule to save them from Trumbo's glove.

are the red-sox supposed to be major contenders again? haven't paid attention to MLB is years now, but now it seems charming again.

i didn't even realize the opener was today! or last night. or whatever.

SYDNEY -- Manager Don Mattingly struggled Friday trying to explain to an Australian reporter, in baseball terms, just what makes Clayton Kershaw so special, when all he really had to say was, 'Just watch.'

Don Mattingly the great ambassador for baseball

love and light (Karl Malone), Saturday, 22 March 2014 15:51 (eleven years ago)

"If you stay with us over the course of a season, you'd understand the importance of Clayton," Mattingly said, when given another shot in the postgame news conference.

poly what are your thoughts on the rizzo/cashner trade? kinda interesting to look at in hindsight

Cashner seems like he could become a workhorse. His velocity is great, but as a pitcher he's still figuring some stuff out.

Rizzo was atrocious in his one season with the Padres, so I'm glad the result of the trade was a legit major league player and not a bag of balls and two PTBNL's.

Evan R, Monday, 31 March 2014 19:51 (eleven years ago)

way to get it dude

standing ovation in this case is loaded, most people probably standing up to say "we support you in your recovery from this awful strd infliction you've inflicted on yourself we got yr back" but it's not hard to read it as "hey you got boned we always had your back selig did 9/11"

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Monday, 31 March 2014 19:53 (eleven years ago)

lol not a single Brewer fan I know things Braun is innocent. we're just glad to have him back. keep in mind this team hadn't made the playoffs for TWENTY SIX YEARS at one point.

frogbs, Monday, 31 March 2014 20:09 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, overwhelming consensus is that Braun is a lying douchebag largely responsible for the hell the team endured last season. But you can understand why fans don't like being ridiculed as backwoods hicks because they're excited to have the star player the team's entire future hinges on back in the lineup after an ugly long absence.

apropos of absolutely nothing, i just did a quick check to determine which player with a career negative fWAR had the most plate appearances.

Alfredo Griffin. 7331 PAs. Career fWAR: -1.0

Among active players, it seems to be Delmon Young, with 3939 PAs and a career fWAR of -1.3

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 21:26 (eleven years ago)

"Sometimes a blister can really ruin a pitcher's....career."

- Al Hrabosky, worst announcer of all time, April 11, 2014.

is there an example of a blister ruining a pitcher's career? i understand the effects it can have on a season, but a career?

Karl Malone, Saturday, 12 April 2014 00:58 (eleven years ago)

he's already the worst announcer of all time, regardless of whether or not his quote can be backed up by anything.

when i go to sleep i try to think of al hrabosky and pete kozma in a boxing match, a simultaneous double-KO, but somehow it never materializes in my dreams

Karl Malone, Saturday, 12 April 2014 01:00 (eleven years ago)

a few nights ago one of the other cardinals announcers made a joke on air that was really in the awkward middle zone of interpretation - it was a dryly delivered joke about al hrabosky sucking and no one wanting to talk to him. there was an incredibly tense second or two where the only sound was the joker laughing to himself as you could almost hear hrabosky's remaining neurons fly around in an attempt to determine whether or not it was a joke. then hrabosky responded with a weak counter joke in return, basically of the "no...YOU'RE the one who sucks and no one wants to talk to..." variety

Weirdest play: Kinsler on first, ran on pitch -- ball four to Cabrera. Conger threw -- wildly -- to second anyway. Trout picked up the throw, threw -- wildly -- to pitcher Santiago, who threw -- wildly -- home. Three throwing errors on a play that should not have happened.

can't believe you're not listening to gary, ron and keith

mookieproof, Thursday, 24 April 2014 01:06 (eleven years ago)

i was googling aorund for more info yesterday, and i am probably more unreliable and stupid than they are, but the NL record for k's i found in an order to start a game was one mickey welch in 1884, and the record was 9 -- and they would've mentioned if he shared the record. so michael wacha might be only the second? and the first in 130 years? (al record was 7, btw)

Neckbread (Will M.), Thursday, 24 April 2014 13:32 (eleven years ago)

i get the feeling it's two different records we're discussing here. one is most consecutive strikeouts to consecutive batters to start a game - in other words, no one else gets a walk or a hit or anything. i'm guessing that's the one with the record set back in the 1800s (Morbs was mentioning it too in the Mets thread).

then there's the record for most consecutive outs recorded with strikeouts at the beginning of the game. that's the one wacha would be relevant to, as he gave up 2 walks and a hit in the first 3 innings along with the 9 strikeouts. i think when the cardinals broadcasters mentioned that wacha was the 7th player to do it, this was the record they were talking about.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 24 April 2014 13:41 (eleven years ago)

haha. i was coming back to say that i had misunderstood after looking up the play-by-play.

well, 7 to do it or 2, kid's still goddamn impressive. also, didn't we see a game kinda like this with danny salazar like 2 weeks ago? he had something like 10 ks but his pitch count tapped him out in the 4th or 5th inning.

Neckbread (Will M.), Thursday, 24 April 2014 13:44 (eleven years ago)

wacha's pretty awesome, but one major asterisk to his performance is that it was windy as hell on the field. wacha's cap flew off his head at one point when he was just standing there! that may have helped him out at some points. i'm not sure if that much wind would change the trajectory of a pitch, but it must have been really distracting for the batters. or at least, on balance, more distracting for the batter than for the pitcher.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 24 April 2014 13:48 (eleven years ago)

and in the end it looks like it got to wacha too, because he gave up 5 walks in 4 innings

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/baseballs-worst-rule-is-dead/

In reality, though, we only had to live with the rule for those last 11 days, because according to Ken Rosenthal, MLB has already reversed course and the old definition of a catch will return to MLB in time for tonight’s games.

Starting Friday night, umpires will rule on catches the way they did in the past, using more of a common-sense approach rather than following the letter of the law, according to major-league sources.

A catch, forceout or tag will be considered legal if a fielder has control of the ball in his glove, but drops the ball after opening his glove to transfer the ball to his throwing hard, sources said. No longer will the fielder be required to successfully get the ball into his throwing hand.

Karl Malone, Friday, 25 April 2014 16:29 (eleven years ago)

so striking out the entire lineup, in order, has only been done once to start a game? I mean I know that's impossibly difficult but with like ~2400 games being played a year (plus playoffs) you'd think it would've been done more than that.

frogbs, Friday, 25 April 2014 16:51 (eleven years ago)

if the average hitter strikes out 20% of the time (not sure on the actual number but its somewhere around that) then the chances of it happening are 1 in 1953125, so you'd expect it to happen once every 800 seasons or so

ciderpress, Friday, 25 April 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

err sorry, once every 400 seasons since theres 2 opportunities per game

ciderpress, Friday, 25 April 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

In the abstract yes but there's got to be factors that combine to rise that number. Good pitching, bad lineup, lots of wind, etc. I was thinking bout this myself (I assumed 25% of the time sounded right, though hitters strike out way more than they used to) and yeah it feels like it should be super rare but I didn't figure it to be a lottery ticket.

I mean we have already had Vander Meer's two no-hits in a row and Fernando Tatis hitting two grand slams in the same inning. Both those seem way more unlikely than striking out the first 9 in a row. Maybe the math proves me wrong though.

frogbs, Friday, 25 April 2014 17:04 (eleven years ago)

Re: Tulo, just realized how stupid his numbers are right now. 3.1 fWAR...in 31 games played. That's on pace for 16.1 fWAR; the highest position player WAR since 1900 is Ruth's 1923 15-WAR performance. And it's not like he's leaning heavily on defense; his wRC+ is 236 -- 5 points higher than Ruth's in 1923.

Obviously he'd need to sustain this pace for 162 full games, which when combined with his injury history seems unlikely. (He's also putting up a BABIP .080 higher than his career average -- funny enough, the same figure as Ruth in 1923 give or take a few .001s.) But if somehow he does keep this up, he could compete for the best positional performance of all time.

Time to start paying attention to Rockies games.

interesting article re: park effects and if they really even mean anything when looking at rockies hitters

k3vin k., Friday, 23 May 2014 02:44 (eleven years ago)

that went from interesting to a bit bonkers very quickly

i was wondering about this and actually asked cameron in one of his chats (he didn't answer bc he is a fascist) if it's possible that the rockies have simply figured out how to exploit coors to such an extent that the park factors can't keep up (ie to an extent far beyond their opponents' abilities). that seems to be a bit more reasonable than assuming the rockies are victims of coors being too nice to them or smth. it's like the baseball version of "affluenza". but it's a rockies fansite and i guess it's easier to imagine your hitters are better rather than worse. silly circular logic to say "how can the rockies have terrible offenses when [list of four good hitters with coors-inflated numbers] were on the team (rarely at the same time)"

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Friday, 23 May 2014 04:34 (eleven years ago)

yeah i don't really buy that guy's conclusion at all from the data he's presenting, the data just as easily could reflect the rockies fielding below-average teams who, thanks to the effects of coors field, look like an average offensive team at home

k3vin k., Friday, 23 May 2014 04:43 (eleven years ago)

the cardinals broadcasting team pioneered the post-fact landscape that dominates the modern world

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 01:47 (eleven years ago)

an inning later, mccarver got pissed, set off by a mound visit from yadier molina to sam freeman, the young cardinals reliever. mccarver set out to "debunk the myth" that young pitchers are afraid to shake off yadier molina. not only are they not afraid of shaking him off, he says, but yadier WANTS them to shake them off (this post is rated R, sorry). mccarver then repeats these two ideas - young pitchers are not afraid of shaking him off, and yadi wants them to do that - over and over over the course of one to two minutes, slightly adjusting the wording with every cycle.

then dan (not rick, as i said earlier - the cardinals have a 4-man rotating broadcasting crew that usually consists of 2 of 3 of dan mclaughlin, ricky horton, and fucking al hrabosky, and occasionally drops in tim mccarver just to remind bible belt citizens that there's a possibility that we really are currently living in the times of armageddon) says "...so just to play devil's advocate, i've seen yadi quite a bit this year, and pitchers really haven't shook him off very much this year". tim responds, baldly lying, "yes, but i meant ALL catchers...not just yadi", despite him very specifically talking about yadier molina the entire time.

Checking Baseball Reference, the leaderboard is ancient. The highest figure I can spot for the last 70 years is, perfectly enough, Clemente's 27 in 1961. Stan Spence, someone I've never heard of, had 29 in 1944.

Pre-2005: Rated #83 Prospect
Pre-2006: Rated #3 Prospect
Pre-2007: Rated #8 Prospect
Pre-2008: Rated #16 Prospect

was released by the sugarland skeeters last week after batting .098/.156/.159 in 90 plate appearances over 25 games.

he hit the 43 homers in the california league, which is known for that shit. but still, no one else was hitting 43 homers there.

i am curious about how park effects affect prospects -- maybe if he'd spent that year in the florida state league, which is a homer graveyard, he'd have learned how to make better contact? either way, the complete lack of subsequent power for wood is mysterious.

i'm really interested to see what becomes of gallo. not even giancarlo demonstrated this kind of power on the east coast. and while he still fans a lot, he's dramatically improved his contact/obp since last year

there's a guy named pat venditte, now in triple-a with the yankees -- who does this. he has a special glove that fits either hand.

when he broke in a few years ago, the first time he faced a switch-hitter resulted in this back-and-forth dance as they both kept switching sides. ultimately the new york-penn league made a rule that the hitter has to declare his side first.

we're hoping that venditte makes it (he's a reliever), but he doesn't throw anywhere near 94 with either arm. but even as a soft-tosser, he always has a platoon advantage.

Andy K, Friday, 25 July 2014 18:25 (eleven years ago)

after watching mike matheny order a bunt (which failed) with a runner on first, no outs, tie score in a game at wrigley, i realized that he is even dumber than i thought. this isn't groundbreaking analysis or anything, but i realized that quantitatively, bunting in such a situation is even worse than the run expectancy matrix would lead one to believe.

according to tom tango's matrix, the average run expectancy in a situation with 0 outs and a runner on 1B is 0.941, while the average run expectancy with 1 out and a runner on 2B is 0.721. again, i think that's something a lot of people realize - all else equal, a successful bunt in that situation lowers your run expectancy for the inning. but i never took into account the probability of a failed bunt which results in another out without moving the runner. in the case of a failed bunt, the run expectancy for a runner on 1B with one out is 0.562.

i'm not sure what the authoritative figure is for failed bunts, but this analysis from 2005 came up with 77% success/23% failure, so I'm going to use that.

so in other words, if you have a situation with a runner on 1B and no out (avg. run expectancy 0.941) and decide to bunt, the projected run expectancy after the bunt if you take into account the probability of failure is 0.684 = (.77 x .721) + (.23 x .562), not 0.721.

in conclusion mike matheny is an idiot, oscar taveras 4ever

Karl Malone, Friday, 25 July 2014 22:35 (eleven years ago)

i know i've mentioned this before, but the biggest arguments i ever had with my wife were about bunting -- i maintained that a baseball player who can actually hit major league pitching *should* be able to lay down a sacrifice bunt if asked (which should be very rare), she felt that the majority of hitters never practiced it and that it was asking for something above and beyond

not gonna send her that fangraphs link

re: matheny what is the expectancy of scoring ~something~ vs. not scoring at all in those situations? obv giving up an out kills a big inning (and overall run expectancy), but if it's the ninth you only need one

re: matheny what is the expectancy of scoring ~something~ vs. not scoring at all in those situations? obv giving up an out kills a big inning (and overall run expectancy), but if it's the ninth you only need one

let's see...via the same tom tango reference, only this time using the "chance that a run will score at some point in the inning" table:

no outs, runner on 1B: .441
1 out, runner on 2B (aka the successful bunt situation): .418
1 out, runner on 1B (aka the unsuccessful bunt situation): .284

Karl Malone, Friday, 25 July 2014 23:42 (eleven years ago)

all else equal, successfully bunting to 2B slightly lowers your chances to score at all, and the not-so-unlikely scenario where the bunt fails significantly decreases it

all else equal, successfully bunting to 2B slightly lowers your chances to score at all, and the not-so-unlikely scenario where the bunt fails significantly decreases it

Well sometimes it can make sense if the guy at the plate has a low career OBP. In this case it's Mark Ellis who isn't having a great season but still has an OBP north of .320 so I believe the numbers quoted there are about accurate. Even still this was in the 6th inning I believe where "playing for only one run" makes zero sense. I'd like to see what those numbers look like with the average pitcher at the plate (who I would assume also bunts unsuccessfully more often)

Maggie killed Quagmire (collest baby ever) (frogbs), Monday, 28 July 2014 16:46 (eleven years ago)

The AL is leading in interleague play this year, but just barely, 154-146. The NL hasn't been this close in ten years. Does this mean anything? Is it a one year blip or is the talent pool finally evening out?

I think it's hard to really say because of the parity in both leagues this year -- it's hard to say who is good and who isn't when most teams are mediocre, bordering on fringe contenders.

It rained at the Giants/Cubs game last night, hard, but only for 15 minutes. However, the grounds crew couldn't get the tarp on fast enough so the field got totally soaked. They didn't call the game (for the Cubs) until 1 a.m., about four hours after the rain. Apparently the Giants were pissed.

The Giants likely will file a protest with Major League Baseball, saying they were told everything would be done to resume the game. For at least the final hour of the delay, the field was untouched except for a guy using a rake.

“It’s my last (recourse). I hope they listen and watch what happened there because in this day and time, it shouldn’t happen, can’t happen, I think, with the importance of these games,” Bochy said.

But the whole bizarre episode was cast in a new light Thursday when the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the Cubs had slashed worker hours to keep them under 30 hours a week to avoid paying health benefits under Obamacare.

Citing "numerous sources with direct knowledge," the Sun-Times reported that the Cubs had sent home 10 grounds crew workers early the night of the Tuesday game that ended in disaster. And at least part of the reason, per the newspaper's sources, is that the team has been trying to keep seasonal workers under 30 hours per week as the Affordable Care Act takes effect.

i always wondered how ball fans tolerated the low-offense 80s, which always looked so boring (and ugly, due to 80s cameras, which didn't help) and now we're in a low offense era and it feels just as exciting as always. my brain's adapted to the lower HR totals.

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Monday, 8 September 2014 02:53 (eleven years ago)

there was also this written by a considerably less trollish and actual baseball writer suggesting that strikeouts could actually be lowered by making umpires more accurate in those giant glaring areas outside the strike zone that derek here presented and then completely ignored for an angle

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Monday, 8 September 2014 03:12 (eleven years ago)

it's possible that my brain is swayed by the unpleasant picture quality and relative lack of major sluggers, though the 80s SLG% seems pretty much in line with both 60s and 70s

maybe it's just the lack of big stars? both hitting and pitching really. the game seemed to lack the personality of all the other decades.

So if NL WC game is SF-PIT, who pitches? Bumgarner v Liriano/Cole?

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:45 (eleven years ago)

bumgarner scheduled to pitch tonight and sunday; pirates have liriano/cole going saturday and sunday. nl game is next wednesday.

the division is probably out of reach for both (unless the giants sweep these next two from the dodgers, maybe), but i imagine both would much rather play the wild card game at home. so it probably depends on what the situation is by the weekend. pirates own the tiebreaker due to winning the season series.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:17 (eleven years ago)

i'm assuming that they will wrap up the slots before Sunday, forgot that homefield could still be in play. Two offdays kinda lets them consider a Starter A/Starter B approach.

Phil Hughes (!!) set the all time record for K/BB ratio by a qualified pitcher -- 186 K's, 16 walks! He broke Saberhagen's 1994 record, and also pitched 30 more innings than Sabes. And unlike Saberhagen, he didn't manage to have more wins than walks though -- 16 wins, 16 walks.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 September 2014 11:11 (eleven years ago)

If Mariners win all four and both the Royals and A's win exactly one game, there will be a play-in game for the play-in game to the playoff game to get in the playoffs. Bud Selig's exoskeleton would split at the seams, and the beetle creature inside would fly away at top speed. "Screw this," he'd click. So that's probably the scenario we should all root for.
