or, Captain America: Winter Soldier -- The 2014 New York Yankees
(i just spent like half an hour trying to make a jeter-as-roy-batty pic, but my photoshop skills can't do it justice.)
for the first time since 1998, the yankees are *not* the most expensive team in baseball. they are, however, the oldest, even minus a-rod.
how much slower will cc's fastball be this year? which of the players will break down first? does it even matter how the team does? what will be the best and worst gifts on jeter's farewell tour? what will john sterling's home run calls be for ellsbury/beltran/mccann?

Seager became the first major leaguer to hit two triples and at least one homer and one double since Hal Breeden for Montreal in 1973, STATS said. The last AL player to do it was Hoot Evers for Detroit in 1950.
"That's definitely a special one," Seager said. "That's definitely one I'll remember, for sure."
His second triple was aided by a rare mental mistake by Jeter.
Seager hit a blooper down the line that bounced off the glove of sliding left fielder Brett Gardner. Jeter was also giving chase and had a chance to make the catch off the deflection, but couldn't come up with it.
With his back to third base umpire Brian Gorman, Jeter did not see the fair signal. When he corralled the ball in foul ground, he continued to jog several steps toward the corner. He looked surprised when he turned, and his throw to third was too late.
Phelps hollered "throw the ball!" as Seager headed to third. After the play was over, Jeter could be seen on television saying "I thought it was foul" as he walked back to the infield.
"I'm in for the bunt and went back on the popup. It never crossed my mind that it was fair. I almost gave it to a fan," Jeter said. "I thought for sure the ball was foul because I was in foul territory."

I mentioned on another thread that I started watching a DVD of Fidrych's Monday night start against the Yankees in 1976. Before the game, all the Yankees introduce themselves (probably still new then). Billy Martin goes last: "Billy Martin, manager, born in Berkeley, California, died in New York City." And that was in '76, before the real fun started.

I'm down for hating on Jeter as much as anyone - but how much of that can be blamed on Jeter? Ultimately it's Girardi's decision - and I wouldn't be surprised if the front office pressured him to make sure Jeter was front and centre as often as possible.

If the Yankees want to tank their playoff chances so that Jeter can be front and centre, it's fine with me.
Lots of HOF-level players batted lower in the lineup, shifted to an easier defensive position, or accepted less than full time roles late in their careers. I think it's generally agreed that Jeter has refused to do at least two of the three. If he was really the selfless team leader who would do anything to win (according to his reputation) then he wouldn't be hitting second every day.

from BP podcast FB wall:
Jeter is on the brink of doing it! His SLG is now just .001 higher than his OBP (.304 and .303). With a few more bad games, he can finish with a sub .250 BA. sub .600 OPS, and a OBP higher than his SLG. You can do it, Derek.

Joe Girardi can say he wasn't hired to put on a farewell tour all he wants. He was, and he betrayed both himself and the fans by doing so.
Even though you have said, "I wasn't hired to put on a farewell tour," why have your actions been consistent with a manager putting on a farewell tour?

A better Deadspin post would be an analysis of what's in the gift basket. Has this not been done by an enterprising blogger? The sports memorabilia collector in me would consider a Jeter reacharound if it netted me one (near mint condition please). How has a Jesus toast style eBay basket not happened? Certainly one is needed for inclusion at his forthcoming Cooperstown wing.
I may have told this story on ILB before, in fact I'm pretty certain I have. There was a period '97-'02 where everyone in NYC had a Jeter story apocryphal or not from a friend of a friend. My favorite was from a friend in Michigan, Jeter was back in Ann Arbor at a restaurant around '05 and sidled up to two students at the bar. There was was some awkward flirting and the two of them didn't want to compete for him but he deaded that by cornily asking both of them to check out the roof bar views at his hotel (some crappy Marriott). They end up having a menage a trois in his room and leave around 4am. Jeter may be a nice guy but he certainly doesn't want dead co-eds scandalizing his reputation, he insists they take a car service and gives them money even if the U of M campus is essentially across the street. After their $5 cab ride back they have $60 in cash left from him, at that point they ask themselves, "Did we just get paid as sex workers?".

He learned that often the best way to deflate a story is to ignore it. The Post once claimed that after sleeping with women, Jeter would leave a gift basket of signed memorabilia in the car taking the “conquest” home. He’s avoided commenting on the item for three years. But he’s still annoyed. “Like I’m giving them signed baseballs and pictures of myself on the way out! Who comes up with a story like that?” He laughs, incredulous. “It said the reason people found out was because I gave the same girl the same basket and I had forgotten I’d given her one—like there are so many people coming through I forgot!” Even if Jeter were cheesy enough to have handed out souvenirs, he’s far too careful to have made that kind of mistake.
nothing cheesy about jeter

The weather forecast for New York City on Thursday calls for thunderstorms. Is it possible even God is trying to delay the inevitable?"Oh, I don't know about that," laughed Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "If he really wanted to intervene maybe he'd take away a few wins from the Royals."Kidding aside, it seems as if nature herself may step in this week to allow Jeter's successful final season to continue on for another 24 or even 48 hours."I'm kind of hoping that happens," admitted first baseman Mark Teixeira. "It gives DJ a little more time for a curtain call, and as long as we're still in it any extra rest we can get now is a bonus."That's right. The Yankees still have a shot at this. The Yankees are the Yankees, and while they're far back of several other teams, those teams don't have the same end-of-season experience as this squad. "This is a team that never quits," outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury stated, a player who left a sinking ship of quitters just in time to board a vessel destined for a playoff push. "We're just following his example."The "his" is Derek Jeter. The example is second-to-none.Jeter quite naturally downplays his own role in the Yankees' unexpectedly overachieving season."I've had some good hits land this season, but it's really the other guys who have picked us up on the occasions I've scuffled this year. Tex, Ichiro, CC, all of them."Time for some rain to give us more time with the fearless leader. And hey, maybe Mr. November will shine in October once more. Don't doubt him for a second.

BOSTON -- It was supposed to be a festive occasion, in which Derek Jeter's New York Yankees teammates were to present their captain with gifts to express their respect and gratitude just moments before he would take the field for his final game at Yankee Stadium. But before the gifts could be bestowed, manager Joe Girardi had a message he wished to deliver to his players. It was not a fond farewell to Jeter, but a scathing critique of the Yankees' 2014 season, in which he expressed his disappointment with their failure to reach the playoffs for a second straight year, the first time that has happened in more than two decades.According to clubhouse sources who were present for the critique, and backed up by interviews with more than a half-dozen players, most of whom spoke to ESPNNewYork.com off the record for fear of angering their manager, Girardi chided some players for being overweight and others for not being "hungry" enough.

Yankees prospect right-hander Ty Hensley was brutally attacked over the holidays and suffered “multiple facial fractures, including to his jaw, as well as multiple other head injuries.” Charges have been filed against 24-year-old Anthony Morales, who played football at Weber State and tried out for the Carolina Panthers last year....
Witnesses told police they heard Hensley and Morales arguing about the amount of money athletes receive for signing with professional teams, the court papers said.
