... apart from the rumours of Salary Cap breaches which have all been denied by the Club and the AFL now it's can we win a fourth Premiership.

Kevin Sheedy's has his two cents worth....
http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/articles/2004/02/05/1075853998874.html

He seems to forget everyone said it was impossible for us to win a third after losing one of the finals, not getting a weeks rest etc etc.

Certainly it will be a hard task, but we've got as good a chance if not better than the other 15 teams.

GO THE LIONS!

oops i forgot prel final yips and qualifying yips

jsa, Friday, 6 February 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ol' Nutter failed absolutely to wake me up. And I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for once, and assert he wasn't actually trying to.

Yet another dismally inept attempt to artificially put AFL back on the back page. The AFL and the media hacks seem to think if we go a month without hearing Sheeds' opinion on anything, or seeing Shane Crawford's torso, or hearing what a great footballer/bloke/potential Nobel Peace Prize winner Nathan Buckley or James Hird is, we're all so stupid and our attention spans are so inadequate we'll forget the AFL even exists.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 6 February 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That's true Fred, but if you started work in October and did not get recognised for your efforts until the end of March you'd get narky too.

"That's true Fred, but if you started work in October and did not get recognised for your efforts until the end of March you'd get narky too. "

Now this sounds like what's happening to the Lions. How often do we hear any news of the 3 time reigning Premiers on FoxFooty News Updates "all the news of your team all summer" what a joke! Imagine if it were a Vic team 3 years reigning Premiers, and only got News Update of the club and players once a month!

Think we should startup our own FoxFooty News Updates.

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Friday, 6 February 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we have ONE conversation where you don't bring up your hero Ned Flanders?

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Friday, 6 February 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

REB if you are referring to me talking about the Brisbane Lions, the answer is highly unlikely. We get little enough news up here about our own team let alone any about yours or anyone elses. And as I started this thread specifically speaking about the Lions why should I change it! LOL

How are you CATS gunna go this year?

Regards Ned Flanders!!!

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

How are the Cats gunna go this year Luce?

Surely that question would have to be one of the toughest to answer in football. I've been a Cat fan for more years than I will admit to in public but lets say that I've experienced enough disappointment to know that talking us up at this time of year is an effort that is fraught with danger.

There is plenty to like about the look of our list and I certainly disagree with the prevailing view that the Cats lack talent and star quality. However, our forward line still looks less than intimidating and the news that Benny Graham is going up forward again is something that does not fill me with hope, but if we can more goals out of Kingsley as well as about 40 for Big Ben then it might prove to be a handy move.

The forward line really needs the likes of McCarthy, Mooney and Gardiner to stand up and with our new 'dual' ruck set up maybe Chambers or Loats can give us an added target in the forward 50. David Haynes will also have a lot expected of him as our small crumbing goalkicking option. Aaron Lord had little left in the tank and failed to do even a Jason Snell, let alone a Ronnie Burns at his best so I think that is another possible area for improvement.

Still, these are the players who I think can have a big season at Catland this year and if they do, I think we can make the eight.

Spriggs, Ablett, Kelly, Enright, Wojinski, Scarlett, Harley,King, Maloney, Chapman and Steve Johnson. Maybe not stars yet, but I don't think it will take them much longer. This cake is almost ready folks.

regards,

REB

Friendship with Tori Amos

One of Gaiman's most commented-upon friendships is with the musician Tori Amos, a Sandman fan who became friends with Gaiman after making a reference to "Neil and the Dream King" on her 1991 demo tape. He included her in turn as a character (a talking tree) in his novel Stardust.[103] Amos also mentions Gaiman in her songs, "Tear in Your Hand" ("If you need me, me and Neil'll be hangin' out with the dream king. Neil says hi by the way"),[104] "Space Dog" ("Where's Neil when you need him?"),[105] "Horses" ("But will you find me if Neil makes me a tree?"),[106] "Carbon" ("Get me Neil on the line, no I can't hold. Have him read, 'Snow, Glass, Apples' where nothing is what it seems"),[107] "Sweet Dreams" ("You're forgetting to fly, darling, when you sleep"),[108] and "Not Dying Today" ("Neil is thrilled he can claim he's mammalian, 'but the bad news,' he said, 'girl you're a dandelion'").[107] He also wrote stories for the tour book of Boys for Pele and Scarlet's Walk, a letter for the tour book of American Doll Posse, and the stories behind each girl in her album Strange Little Girls. Amos penned the introduction for his novel Death: the High Cost of Living, and posed for the cover. She also wrote a song called "Sister Named Desire" based on his Sandman character, which was included on his anthology, Where's Neil When You Need Him?.

Gaiman is godfather to Tori Amos's daughter Tash,[109] and wrote a poem called "Blueberry Girl" for Tori and Tash.[110] The poem has been turned into a book by the illustrator Charles Vess.[111] Gaiman read the poem aloud to an audience at the Sundance Kabuki Theater in San Francisco on 5 October 2008 during his book reading tour for The Graveyard Book.[112] It was published in March 2009 with the title, Blueberry Girl.

In the obscure and largely forgotten interstices of the British left during the upheavals of the 1970s, when hundreds of actors, artists and musicians took up the cudgels (usually Trotskyist) in support of what they hoped was an imminent revolution, there were few more perverse and irrelevant political groupings than this particular sect. Cardew was to devote the last ten years of his life to promoting its interests.

The Fields of Karlhenry (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 01:49 (ten years ago)

Their principal task was to set to music texts that Bains had written – texts ‘of an unsurpassable political and literary crassness’, Tilbury writes. One was called ‘Workers of Ontario’:

We are the workers of Ontario,
We work for the rich of the United States,
We work for the rich of Canada,
We work under the yoke of wage slavery
Hauling the riches out of the earth,
Manufacturing commodities for the rich to sell.
We are the workers of Ontario,
A mighty section of the Canadian working class.

The following year We Sing for the Future was published, containing 78 such songs; unkind critics noted that the title music, composed by Cardew, bore some similarity to the ‘Eton Boating Song’.

Given what is being said about 'cuckold fetishism' in that graphic, the word is being used all wrong. By rights, a cuckold fetish ought to involve antlers, not bulls, and hasn't the slightest connection to big black men schtupping pretty white women. Especially when they are unmarried.

Often minimalist, his clothes are characterized by an almost religious attention to details. The unshakable color palette of shades of black, gray, blue or chocolate seems to evoke the northern light. He offers a softened elegance through essential pieces of clothing that adapt to the multiple lives of those who wear them. He also likes mixing a classical precision with the ruggedness of workwear or the technique of sportswear. Despite this strictness, the style of Kris Van Assche reflects a transversal inspiration. Even though some looks appear similar at first sight, they are feeds by various references such as Amish (Dior Homme Summer 2011) or North Africa silhouettes, workwear wardrobe (KRISVANASSCHE winter 2012-13), menswear clichés (the Sailor for Dior Homme Summer 2013) or even conceptual notions ("lessness" for Dior Homme Summer 2011).

Charles Moore has suggested in the Spectator that by buying ConservativeHome you have become "a more politically influential ‘press’ proprietor with the Tories than Lord Rothermere or Rupert Murdoch, at a tiny fraction of the cost." Do you think this is true?

I think Charles was being playful. Certainly ConHome has become the place to go for news and opinion about the Conservative Party, and I’m proud of that. But that doesn’t quite make me a Rothermere, in the sense of being able to push the government around on the great questions of the day with the threat of bad headlines. The only agenda we have on ConHome is that we all want to see a Conservative majority at the next election, and different contributors have different ideas about how to achieve it. There isn’t a monolithic line, which I think is one of ConHome’s strengths.

Corbyn’s success was met with dismay in the other camps, who knew immediately that his entry would shift the contest to the left. This would leave Andy Burnham, for one, dangerously exposed. Months later, one leading figure in a rival campaign could barely control their rage: “To have [the close of nominations] at 12 o’clock on a Monday – we must have been on fucking crack cocaine. You can’t get to anyone, so people were wandering in after a weekend of spending time with their bloody constituency secretary or their leftwing wife, they just fucking wander off the train and hadn’t even had a cup of tea in the tea room by 12 o’clock on a Monday. They go straight down to the PLP office and do something stupid. The people that are around on a Monday morning are the London lot – and for fuck’s sake, it’s the home of the left, it’s all the fucking mayoral candidates and deputy leader candidates.”

»Empty Airport«, Chra’s first LP on Editions Mego may be read as a reference to Brian Eno’s ambient classic, though this time we find ourselves in a territory of transit that sounds like a dystopian swan song on civilizatoric debris - a heteropia in which the listener restores himself in a surrounding that is emptied of human remains, having left just some ghostly echoes behind.

Chra aka Comfortzone-Labelfoundress Christina Nemec has traced out a post-anthropocene area in which acoustic entries of field recordings are stratified in layers of deconstructed noisescapes. Partly interspersed with clunky technoid bass-lines, an introspective space is opened, which excavates in a discreet and subtle manner, layers of abandoned wasteland. Nemec, who is a member of various band projects like Shampoo Boy (together with Peter Rehberg and Christian Schachinger) or the female berzerker formation SV Damenkraft, has succeeded in producing a significant LP, that merges dark techno and industrial with found sounds and ambient scapes, resulting in a compositoric minimalism that is ushering us in a state of existential trance.

What about Kissinger’s views on human rights?

He didn’t have a policy on human rights. He didn’t like the notion of human rights. He left Europe in 1938 and came here—he is five years older than I am. I was in France during the occupation of France by Germany and some of my best friends were deported because they were Jews. I managed not to be deported because of, as the French would say, le hasard des circonstances. It could have happened. My best friend who was French but of Romanian origin was deported because he managed to get home from the high school where we both went just at the moment when a Gestapo truck was stopping in front of his house. And since he looked very Jewish, he was arrested and killed. I was lucky. One realizes that one really is not the master of one’s fate in those circumstances.

On the question of going into Libya [to support the 2011 uprising], I reacted as somebody who lived in occupied France, and it seemed to me that if one could save lives of people who were totally innocent and could be arrested at any minute, one has a moral duty to do so. I understand perfectly that if you are good realpolitiker, you do not care. And Henry is a good realpolitiker. Which means that the average guy will never find much sympathy with him because he doesn’t operate at that level. He operates at the level of Bismarck. I’ve never been at the level of Bismarck or even of Nixon, and I think that if one can do something to save lives one should. So [Henry and I] were never made for 100 percent agreement. Zbig’s position? I do not know.

Rainham area Rilke (nakhchivan), Friday, 9 October 2015 17:12 (ten years ago)

It seems difficult to reconcile your concerns about human rights with the reality of politics.

This is one of the reasons why I never went into politics. I am not made for it. I would not be very good at it. It was fascinating working with people like Zbig. Although for me, my most impressive co-graduate student was not Zbig, was not Henry, was not [Samuel] Huntington. It was somebody who was not known at all because she was never in politics; she was a thinker. She was a woman from Riga called Judith Shklar and she was by far the biggest star of the department. She was unbelievably great.

The rise in popularity of extreme-left parties in France is far from being a mere epiphenomenon. Another significant fact is that word-formation is very rich too, with ‘McDonaldization’, ‘Disneyization’, ‘McWorldization’, ‘Burger Kingization’, .... All these neologisms evoke what can be called the ‘merchandization’ of the world under the American influence.

Debussy made the trip without Lilly, and his letters to her provide glimpses into their relationship. The courtship had been passionate. Marriage had become rou- tine. Much of his attraction seemed to have been based on what he saw as her child-like simplicity. That helps to explain the increasingly infantile manner he adopted in writing to her—a pose so unlike him, that whatever novelty it may have possessed could only have become tiresome. “I loved your lack of courage very much,” he wrote while in England.“You see, it is very nice to be the strong little wife, but there are times when the strong little wife must have her weaknesses. That adds an extra charm to her graciousness. . . . Would you believe that it is impossible to get a good cup of tea? That makes me think of my rue Cardinet and the dear little wife, who, among other gifts, possesses that of making tea. Ah! in England there are no such wives as that; here they are wives for horseguards with their com- plexions of raw ham and their movements like those of a young animal.”29

Harold Jones (1906 – 1971) was a child killer from Abertillery in Wales.

In 1921, when he was only 15, he was tried at Monmouth Assizes for the murder of an 8-year-old girl, Freda Burnell. However, he was acquitted, and he returned to Abertillery to a hero's welcome. A few weeks afterwards, he murdered 11-year-old Florence "Flossie" Little. T

No NFL game is complete without heavy military presence. (Incidentally, it recently emerged the NFL has billed the Defense Department $6m for military tributes over the past four seasons.) The league’s expanding London outpost continues to fly its flag – or rather have it carried by US service personnel during ostentatious military salutes. When the 49ers met the Jaguars at Wembley a couple of years ago, a serviceman was deployed to the end zone to be thanked for his service during a break in play. Last month’s Jaguars-Bills game at Wembley boasted a Chinook and Lynx flypast. The undercard for Sunday’s Wembley clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions featured the military wives’ choir and pitchside men in uniform performing ceremonial roles of one sort or another. The Chiefs beat the Lions 45-10, so with warfare that asymmetric, it’s just a shame the match reports didn’t get into the martial spirit and describe them as having played like US drones at an Afghan wedding party.

The award-winning Götterdämmerung fire column design of granite or sandstone was selected as a standard model for all Bismarck towers. The massive and squat design could be built to different heights and widths depending on the amount of money donated for the particular monument.

In manifestation of the Bismarck cult, they were built in various styles in locations across the German Empire, including its colonies in New Guinea (Gazelle Peninsula), Cameroon (near Limbe) and Tanzania, as well as in areas of Europe that, at the time, were part of Germany, but now lie within the borders of Poland, France, Denmark or Russia.

These are the three great lyrical themes: sex, hate and a smarmy, hypocritical version of brotherly love. Such polluted sources issue in a muddy stream where only monsters can swim. A glance at the videos that project images on the wall of Plato's cave since MTV took it over suffices to prove this. Hitler's image recurs frequently enough in exciting contexts to give one pause. Nothing noble, sublime, profound, delicate, tasteful or even decent can find a place in such tableaux. There is room only for the intense, changing, crude and immediate, which Tocqueville warned us would be the character of democratic art, combined with a pervasiveness, importance and content beyond Tocqueville's wildest imagination.

Everyone else was so boring and unable to charm youthful passions. Jagger caught on. In the last couple of years, Jagger has begun to fade. Whether Michael Jackson, Prince or Boy George can take his place is uncertain. They are even weirder than he is, and one wonders what new strata of taste they have discovered. Although each differs from the others, the essential character of musical entertainment is not changing. There is only a constant search for variations on the theme. And this gutter phenomenon is apparently the fulfillment of the promise made by so much psychology and literature that our weak and exhausted Western civilization would find refreshment in the true source, the unconscious, which appeared to the late romantic imagination to be identical to Africa, the dark and unexplored continent.

Next we go canvassing in Lindfield, a gorgeous village next to Haywards Heath. The wealthy commuters who tend to be swinging to Labour are out, and most of the people we meet are elderly, loyal Conservatives who are delighted to meet their man. Soames is a majestic figure, a tremendous testimony to the virtues of British food and French wine. He is wearing a panama with a Royal Hussars hatband. This is purely for doffing purposes. When a man of such bulk and wearing such headgear doffs it to you, you stay doffed.

Many of the people we meet probably voted Tory when Soames's grandfather, Winston Churchill, led the party. He gave me the true version of what I had always suspected was an apocryphal story. In or around 1953, when Soames was five, he didn't know how important his grandfather was until someone told him. So he walked up to the old man's bedroom, managed to get past the valets and the secretaries, and found him sitting up in bed.

"Is it true, grandpapa, that you are the greatest man in the world?" he asked.

"Yes I am," said Churchill. "Now bugger off."

Diocletian reproached him for his supposed betrayal, and he commanded him to be led to a field and there to be bound to a stake so that certain archers from Mauritania would shoot arrows at him. "And the archers shot at him till he was as full of arrows as an urchin,"[11] leaving him there for dead. Michael searches for and finds E.T. dying in a ditch and takes him home to Elliott, who is also dying. A grief-stricken Elliott is left alone with the motionless E.T. when he notices a dead chrysanthemum, the plant E.T. had previously revived, coming back to life. E.T. reanimates and reveals that his people are returning.

Before boarding the spaceship, he tells Elliott "I'll be right here," pointing his glowing finger to his forehead. This freedom of speech, and from a person whom he supposed to have been dead, greatly astonished the emperor; but, recovering from his surprise, he gave orders for his being seized and beat to death with cudgels, and his body thrown into the common sewer. A pious lady, called Lucina, admonished by the martyr in a vision, got it privately removed, and buried it in the catacombs at the entrance of the cemetery of Calixtus.

Bouts is a long way from being a household name but is considered one of the finest and most influential painters of what was a golden period of Flemish art. He was among the pioneers of the oil-painting technique and one of the first northern European painters to make use of single-point perspective, both of which can be observed in the painting.

His works have inspired many, including the contemporary artist Bill Viola, who was moved to tears by Bouts’ weeping Madonna, Mater Dolorosa. After seeing it, Viola went on to make one of his most famous series of video works, The Passions.

NHS statistics show that 7,366 people were admitted to hospital with a primary or secondary diagnosis of malnutrition between August 2014 and July this year, compared with 4,883 cases in the same period from 2010 to 2011 – a rise of more than 50 per cent in just four years.

Cases of other diseases rife in the Victorian era including scurvy, scarlet fever, cholera and whooping cough have also increased since 2010, although cases of TB, measles, typhoid and rickets have fallen.

My strongest memory is of our work together on Scriabin’s tenth sonata. In lessons, we would play all the notes in a measure at tempo, then catch their resonance in the pedal and simply wait, sitting silently and listening to their decay. In retrospect, I see that he was far more interested in teaching me how to listen to the piano than how to play the instrument in any traditional sense. Neely Bruce (b. 1944), an American composer who studied piano with Basile at Eastman in the 1960s, recalled Basile’s insist- ence that his students always practice at tempo – even if it meant proceed- ing only a few measures at a time – to learn to hear the distinctive sound of each phrase and grasp speci c acoustic phenomena relating to tone color observable only in real time.

Whatever happened to Lanliq Fortified Wine? It was pronounced 'Lannie' and those of us over a certain age may remember that at one time it was very much the beverage of choice for the discerning dosser. I believe a Lanliq and hairspray cocktail was just the ticket for instant oblivion, although I imagine that the hangover afterwards must have been pretty spectacular. Haven't seen a bottle of this stuff for years. It appears that Buckfast have well and truly cornered that particular end of the market. There used to be another brand of fortified wine called Eldorado which was also quite popular among the Lanliq-drinking fraternity.

Refrigerator death

The examples and perspective in this article deal primarily with the United States and do not represent a worldwide view of the subject. Please improve this article and discuss the issue on the talk page. (June 2013)

Refrigerator death refers to death by suffocation in a refrigerator or similar device such as a freezer. Such deaths were not uncommon for children in the United States before the passage of the Refrigerator Safety Act in 1956.[1][2][3] Children would occasionally play in abandoned refrigerators and become trapped because the doors were secured shut by latches that could only be opened by the handle on the outside. The first reactions to the deaths were to ask people not to abandon refrigerators and to detach the doors of unused refrigerators. In the mid to late 1950s troops of people would sometimes search out abandoned refrigerators, detaching the doors and smashing the locks. However, these efforts were not entirely effective, and children were still dying inside of refrigerators that had not been found and dismantled. The continued occurrence of refrigerator deaths led to a law that required a change in the way refrigerator doors stay shut. The act applied to all refrigerators manufactured in the United States after October 31, 1958, and is largely responsible for the adoption of the magnetic mechanism that is used today instead of a latch.[1]

The number of deaths due to suffocation in refrigerators declined a statistically significant amount in the years after the law.[4][5][6]

The problem with children suffocating in the appliances was well-known. At least as early as 1954, alternative methods of securing air-tight closure had been suggested, e.g., in patent 2767011, filed by Francis P. Buckley et al. in 1954 and issued in 1956.[7]

The Refrigerator Safety Act is codified at 15 U.S.C. 1211 1214) as Public Law 84-930, 70 Stat. 953, August 2, 1956.[8]

Individual American states also have similar laws, such as California's.[9]

as a deeply lazy person who often just taps the fridge door, safe in the knowledge that the merest contact between door and the main part of the fridge will be sufficient to close it, the knowledge that many babies had to die in order for this historical progress to be realized is somewhat disturbing

JOHN BORSTLAP SAYS:
August 29, 2014 at 1:53 pm

A breath of common sense… finally…. all this talk about mr B being one of the figureheads of “the living tradition of serious classical music” reads like the rantings from a lunatic asylum. Postwar modernism cut itself off from whatever tradition was still living then, and created a quite independent tradition, with its own aesthetic norms which are fundamentally different from music. Not so difficult to see / hear that. For the ‘original works’ of mr B, or mr F, or any other modernist, a different festival would be more appropriate. (By the way, ‘originality’ is, in itself, not an artistic category, lunatics or criminals can be very original too.) Modernism does not belong in the proms, which is a music festival. The BBC could organise a sonic art festival alongside the proms & thus create a better context for such works.

Nonsense Criteria

As Borstlap charged in his suit against the Fund, its "experts" are all drawn from the narrow community of avant-garde composers, programmers, and performing groups who have themselves received grants. It is, he argued, an isolated, self-referential world, which employs "nonsense criteria." Their idea of musical "originality," he reported, is exemplified by the work of John Cage--best known for his piece 4'33" [more], in which no music is played and listeners hear only the ambient chance sounds of the performance space.(1)

In his initial court proceedings, Borstlap cited as yet more damning evidence of the Fund's nonsensical mindset the experience of his fellow composer Eduard de Boer (pen name: Alexander Comitas). In 2006, de Boer, whose relations with the Fund had been strained during the 1990s, submitted a piece entitled Bubbles. It was awarded 3,000 euros by the Fund, which noted that it "surpassed" the composer's customary output with respect to its "idiom."

What the Fund didn't know was that the piece was a hoax. De Boer had "created" it based on his two young sons' random pounding on a keyboard--which he then translated by entirely arbitrary, mechanical transformations into a playable score for ten instruments.

When confronted with that information, Borstlap says, the Fund was not in the least fazed. In its view such an approach was, as he puts it, "a perfectly normal composing procedure" (including, presumably, the part played by de Boer's children). Perfectly normal, that is, within the mad mindset of the avant-garde musical world.

I must tell you that Ireland is one of the worst and most unfavourable countries in which to carry on warfare; it abounds in deep forests and in lakes and bogs, and much of it is uninhabitable. It is often impossible to come to grips with the people, for they are quite ready to desert their towns and take refuge in the woods, and live in huts made of branches, or even among the bushes and hedges, like wild beasts.... They have pointed, two- edged knives, with broad blades, and they never regard an enemy as dead until they have cut his throat, like a sheep.... They never allow prisoners to be ransomed, and when they have the worst of any skirmish, they scatter and hide in hedges or bushes, or underground, and seem to disappear without trace.1

Legend has it that while the revolutionary leaders were being executed, Austrian generals were drinking beer and arrogantly clinking their beer mugs together in celebration of Hungary's defeat.

Hungarians thus vowed never to clink glasses while drinking beer for 150 years thereafter[citation needed]. There is no explanation for the specified timeframe of 150 years. Although theoretically discontinued on October 6, 1999,[4] in practice, this tradition continued for about a decade after. Throughout Hungary, the clinking of beer mugs or bottles was considered to be bad manners. By 2000s, most Hungarians began to click to their beer mugs – as in the rest of Europe – with little or no hesitation. The exception being of course a handful of openly patriotic citizens that vow to never forget.

At one point he is quoted as blurting out, unexpectedly, "When in doubt, fuck." It also includes a statement near the end from the interviewer, Camilla Long, that I believe is without precedent even in the giddy history of the celebrity profile:

I...feel quite certain that he would willingly show me his penis, given slightly different circumstances and a bucket of champagne.

"Wow," says Fassbender when I recite this to him. "No, I haven’t read that one. Just as well, really." But he does remember the interview. "The first thing she said to me was, ’So, what does it feel like to have a big cock?’ That was her opening question."

And as for her bold assertion about what he might’ve done?

"I don’t think I would touch her with a barge pole."

Mr. Cruz became devoted to Mr. Luttig, whom Mr. Cruz has described as “like a father to me.” During his clerkship, he presented his boss with a caricature of him and other clerks pulling a stagecoach driven by the judge. According to someone who saw the illustration, there was a graveyard behind them with headstones representing the number of people executed in their jurisdiction that year.

The year Mr. Cruz and the others clerked, many of the roughly 80 cases taken up by the justices made major news. For a case about the constitutionality of a law regulating Internet pornography, Mr. Cruz watched X-rated sex scenes on a computer with Chief Justice Rehnquist and Justice O’Connor.

Happy Science teaches that human beings reincarnate again and again into the Earth for a soul training. That is, it reveals what Heidegger could not explain, namely, “the meaning of humans being thrown into the world.” Furthermore, it teaches that humans return to the spirit realm according to how they lived their lives, so they should refine their souls for spiritual growth so that they can return to the higher level of the real world. Happy Science teachings have transcended Heideggerian philosophy in clearly explaining the purpose and meaning of life.

On the other hand, it differs from such shallow positive thinking as “if you think about it, it will come true.” It teaches “the creation of future” after understanding everything about the mechanisms of fate and environment that Heidegger analyzed. In this sense, Heideggerian philosophy can be said to be the flesh and blood of Happy Science teachings.

The spirit of Heidegger also stated that he has high hopes for Happy Science on the political front as well. He likened the huge confusion that will be brought about by China with the “Pandora’s Box.” He clearly said that when this happens, the “creation of freedom” will be necessary and that Happy Science who opposes totalitarianism will be indeed the “hope”. It is all the more significant as these words are spoken by Heidegger who regrets having been complicit in totalitarianism.

Trump boasted she was so poor that when she arrived in America in the 1930s she was barefoot, and still barefoot when she met his father Fred Trump, the son of German immigrants, at a dance. Trump clearly worshipped her.

He took me to meet her in his Trump Tower penthouse. She was perfectly and expensively groomed. Now the shoes were by Chanel.

Her fingernails were a shiny scarlet, the hair coiffeured, her manner impeccable – the perfect wealthy American matron, all trace of the humble Scottish lass airbrushed away. A trophy mother.

Trophy women are undoubtedly important to Trump and there would have been no bigger trophy than Princess Diana. He told friends he might have had a ‘shot’ at her, describing her as his ‘dream lady’.

In his 1997 book, The Art Of The Comeback, he wrote: ‘I only have one regret in the woman department, that I never had the opportunity to court Lady Diana Spencer. I met her on a number of occasions... She lit up the room with her charm, her presence.’

The Americanization of immigrants' names could be the subject of an interesting study. There were occasions when Slavic immigrants in the mining districts of Pennsylvania changed their names to Kelly or Costello, emulating the Irish foreman, unaware that these names were not Anglo-Saxon. (A classic example of a melting-pot name: Alvin O'Konski, a sec-ond-generation American who was a congressman, rabid isolationist and nationalist from the Middle West in the 1940s.) American Jews had a predilection for bestowing Scottish surnames on their children: Milton, Sidney, Mortimer, Irving. (In his short novel A Cool Million, the gloomy and thoughtful Nathanael West constructed a splendid category of Puri-tan-Jewish names: Ezra Silverblatt, Asa Goldstein, etc.) By the 1950s the oddness of the Norman-Jewish or Gaelic-Jewish configurations of such names as Norman Podhoretz, Norman Mailer, Paddy Chayefsky, the names of well-known Jewish American writers, was no longer noticeable. In the early 1960s the first Italian governor of Massachusetts, Foster Furcolo (another melting-pot name) chose to list his name as Furcolowe in the Yale Alumni Directory—this at a time when Italians had replaced the Irish (who two generations before had replaced the Anglo-Saxons) as the most numerous group in Boston and in Massachusetts.

While Labour did not suffer many losses in the north, the turnout and share of the vote in safe Labour working class wards was limp. In Sunderland, turnout across the city was the same as in 2012 but in the safest Labour wards it fell. There is no sign that working class core voters are any more willing to turn out than they were in the last parliament.

These trends are in part a reflection of the current political strategy pursued by the Labour leadership, but they also fit into the longer term trends of support for Labour and to some extent social democratic parties elsewhere. Labour’s vulnerability to a loss of working class votes to abstention and UKIP and defeat in the battle for the floating vote in the middle with the Tories were more powerful influences on the result than the rallying of the progressive metropolitan middle class and ethnic minority votes that were already heading Labour’s way in 2010 and 2015. There is a limit to how much further the electoral gains from this movement can go. There are only so many Latin Quarter constituencies to go round, and Labour already has nearly all of them outside Scotland.

today i was reading about adele meyer's grandson,....

On 23 November 1989, at a time of both Thatcher's and the Conservative Party's waning popularity and shortly after Nigel Lawson's resignation as chancellor, 69-year-old Meyer put himself forward as the pro-European stalking horse for the leadership of the Conservative Party, fully expecting that one of the more prominent pro-Europeans such as Ian Gilmour or Michael Heseltine would take over the role; in the event, none of them did so, and Meyer had no illusions that he had any chance of success.[3] He was derided as "Sir Anthony Whats'isname" by the pro-Thatcher Sun newspaper, who reported that he was the only Conservative MP to oppose the use of force to win back the Falkland Islands following the Argentine invasion of 1982 and had backed a number of Labour policies, including votes against Tory-led welfare benefit cuts and immigration issues. He was also slammed by the Daily Express as "Sir Nobody".[4]

Lately, as I’ve followed the contest between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, I’ve found myself thinking of The Red and the Black, and its play with antiquated notions of authenticity. The passionate support for Sanders has, one hopes, much to do with excitement about his insistent expression of a platform of economic populism. But it would be naïve to think it doesn’t also have to do with his appearance, his way of speaking. There is authenticity, and there is appearing authentic. These two things may mostly align—as they largely but not entirely do with Sanders. (Most anti-establishment figures avoid 35 years in government.) Or they may almost perfectly not align—as in the case of Donald Trump. (A liar celebrated for speaking the truth.) Either way, it’s worth investigating authenticity in our political thinking, both to understand its power and to consider how it helps or hurts the kind of effective, forward-looking agenda that we hope will emerge from a fractured Democratic Party.

One problem with authenticity as a campaign tactic is its unsettling, subconscious alliance with those who benefit from the status quo. If you’re not who you say you are—if you’re moving on the social ladder, or are not in “your place”—you’re inauthentic. Keeping it real subtly advocates for keeping it just like it is.

The semiotics of Sanders’s political authenticity—dishevelment, raised voice, being unyielding—are available to male politicians in a way they are not to women (and to whites in a way they are not to blacks or Hispanics or Asians). Black women in politics don’t have the option to wear their hair “natural”; nearly all white women appear to have blowouts, even Elizabeth Warren. It’s nonsense, and yet the only politically viable option, and therefore not nonsense.

It’s not just that research has shown that women are perceived to talk too much even when they talk less, or that men who display anger are influential while women who do so are not. It’s that there is no such thing as “masculine wiles.” The phrase just doesn’t exist. This doesn’t mean that calling into question Clinton’s authenticity and trustworthiness—the fault line along which the Democratic Party has riven—is pure misogyny. It just means that it’s not purely not misogyny.

Clinton is often described as the institutional candidate, the establishment. There’s a lot of truth to that. But she’s also the woman who initially kept her name (and her job) as the wife of the governor of Arkansas, who used the role of First Lady as cover to push for socialized health care, and who was instrumental in getting health insurance for eight million children past the Republican gorgons when a full reform failed. Someone who has survived being attacked for nearly 40 years must possess a highly developed sense of what the critic Walter Benjamin calls “cunning and high spirits”—the means by which figures in fairy tales evade the oppressive forces of myth, and mortals evade gods. Somehow she achieved one of the more liberal voting records in the Senate, despite rarely being described as a liberal by either the left or the right.

Perhaps one reason that Clinton’s “firewall” of black support has remained standing is that “authenticity” has less rhetorical force with a historically oppressed people, for whom that strategy—being recognizably who people in power think you ought to be—was never viable. There are, of course, important and substantial criticisms of Clinton. But perhaps when we say that Hillary is inauthentic, we’re simply saying that she is a woman working in the public eye.

Democrats on both sides of the party should consider which tactic best suits the underdogs they feel they are defending, and want to defend. Whoever receives the nomination, perhaps the worry should shift from whether the candidate is cunning to whether the candidate—and the Democratic Party—can be cunning enough.
