And to think people call me a socialist when I advocating nailbombing Oxbridge.

But yeah, this isn't some Sanskrit Asperger's "SOMEONE PROTECT THE SANCTITY OF MY BEAUTIFUL MESSAGE BOARD" freakout, this is just "Please save migraines amongst the ILM population" plea for mercy. Help us help you, mods.

gear (gear), Friday, 28 July 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

To quote someone on my greetings thread: "Welcome to the wonderful world of asshats".

I honestly don't understand what I've done. Maybe I seem too enthusiastic, too verbose, too, oh FUCK IT I'm just being myself and if you lot can't deal with it then FUCK YOU ALL. I didn't come here to be abused by no-life webfreaks who can't stand it when someone shows a bit of genuine eloquence. I came here to talk about music and perhaps indulge in a bit of harmless banter, and the ill-feeling is entirely of your own creation.

Your harassment campaign is a very well-organised one though, I'll give you that.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Sunday, 30 July 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Do not add unfounded paranoia to your list of irritating qualities, Louis.

Jed_, I think, gave you some kind and well-meant advice over on ILM -- tone it down and stop apologizing. You would do best to follow it. You are acting like a yo-yo -- what you see as 'too enthusiastic' is *really* obnoxiously OTT 'look at me I'm wacky!' preening, and when you're called on it you tend to shift gears into equally OTT 'I'm sorry, please forgive me, WAAAAH!' apologetics. And they are both getting old, really quickly.

Like I said over on ILM, I am hardly immune to ill-timed attempts at humor, self-dramatization, etc. So I'll say this simply here -- calm DOWN. And if you can't or don't want to do that, then dude, you're not going to fit in here. Blaming us for the fact that you are coming across as a massive tool is your burden to bear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 July 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Also, you might want to try being a bit less dogmatic. I promise you that the opinions about music that you have now will not last for the rest of your life.

Annie Get Your Gin (noodle vague), Sunday, 30 July 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 30 July 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

Search by his name in ILM over the past week if yer so inclined. (Noodle_vague != Noodles, BTW)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 July 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Not that anyone asked me, but this kid has a unique gift: every word out of his mouth is utterly infuriating. I can't even say why. Maybe because he so clearly fancies himself a witty, Evelyn Waugh-esque raconteur. Or maybe it's the self-deprecation so fake it makes Bono's interviews look genuinely self-hating.

I guess you either feel the bile rise in your throat when someone posts "I obviously need to lose some of my masculine, testosterone-fuelled preconceptions, perhaps that men can't be tender and emotive as well as ladies"... or you don't. But I don't think we've ever been visited by anyone so massively in love with his own voice (Ott's rhetorical excesses, for instance, were tempered by his very frequent OTM-ness).

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 30 July 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

nabisco otm

just kidding, Sunday, 30 July 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

That line "I obviously need..." was intended to be dryly sarcastic, not sincerely apologetic. But that's a moot point; the very thought that I'm being at all 'fake' is one that causes me genuine distress and I cannot understand where all this vitriol is coming from. I post frequently on other chatrooms and nobody else has this problem with me; in fact, I am well-liked. I'm just bewildered as to how this has gone so badly wrong.

I think the real problem is that I've never encountered Americans online before. ;-)

Surely the 'Do you compare yourself with Buddha?' question is dumb; when Speaker 1 claims that Speaker 2 is like a wall, Speaker 2's claim that Buddha once spoke to a similar wall surely relates Buddha to Speaker 1 rather than himself.

Just a pedantic observation...

OK, bracing as this banter has been, it's only giving further impetus to a thread unhelpfully entitled 'Ban Louis Jagger'. Therefore, henceforth I shall ne'er again speak word (at least on this thread).

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Sunday, 30 July 2006 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

i am curious: what makes someone want to hang around a place where the immediate reaction to their arrival is general disgust and revulsion? were you hoping to find a place on the internet where people would hate you? cuz if so then i guess maybe i can see an argument for banning you - we've got more of that type than we do corny indie fuxxxors even and we need them even less - and if not then why in the world would you hang around? just curious

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm returning to this thread just the once (the reason I didn't reply here was that I'd already said I was leaving this thread behind) to say that I'm hanging around because being an optimist and a quick learner I think I can improve and grow in people's affections. For example, tonight I've been arguing on the boards sensibly and rewardingly, meeting with no real dissent and plainly showing that I can live with the rest of you guys. I forgive very easily; I'll forget all the unfair slander levelled at me above if I can be accepted as a decent poster and a pleasant guy... :)

haha i'm kinda amazed at ned's vitriol here!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'll give this a shot, pretty sure it won't do any good, but:

1. Stop drawing so much attention to yourself. This is one reason people still get so annoyed with Momus, and why I referred to him upthread. Today you took over someone else's introduction thread and made it ALL ABOUT YOU, the way Momus does with just about every thread he posts on.

2. When people call you on your shit, quit it with the "I meant to do that" or the fake apologies. Nobody falls for it, and it just exacerbates the situation. Conversely, when someone agrees with you, don't gloat or post a bunch of smilies or whatever, that ties into number 1.

3. Stop caring so much what other people think. People are going to disagree with you, even if you are the most "decent poster and pleasant guy" possible. Deal with it and move on.

Marmot 4-Tay: The root cause of dragon hatred among power metal bands. (marmotwo, Monday, 31 July 2006 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

louis i wouldn't sweat it too much - deej caught sooooooooo much worse than this when he first popped up and dude is total one of the gang now. still - have you considered dissensus?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:35 (nineteen years ago)

Having just googled Dissensus I can tell you that I hadn't heard of it before, and upon inspection now it doesn't seem nearly as interesting or lively as this place. I only found ILX because it appeared in several Google searches I'd made for certain albums/bands, and I read it for a while before joining. I'm not jumping ship though. And I really AM off to bed now, accompanied by the dulcet strains of Gomez' Whipping Piccadilly :P

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:40 (nineteen years ago)

no dissensus is pretty great you should give it a chance! they're more into british indie than ilm which is more about pop stuff, if you like britney more than suede or t.i. more than arctic monkeys you'll probably want to stay here (if the reverse obv you'd prefer dissensus). a bunch of bigname brit rock critics post there too - the place is pretty anglphile so factor that in yr calculations. it's probably more friendly than here. i hear they have some sorta hookup where they get free passes or something to 'glastonbury'??? i'm american and find nothing appealing about that island or its peoples so big whoop to me but it may appeal to you if you're ever over there.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

accompanied by the dulcet strains of Gomez

This is part of the problem, I think. Do you really talk that way in conversation, or do you crank it up to put across a clever internet persona? If the former, well hey, more power to you I guess, but it comes across as the latter (to me).

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

I read it for a while before joining

Then, quite simply, you should have known better than to come across the way you do. Lots of poster personae have however rapidly evolved here; as Mr. Blount notes deej's was one of the more dramatic and better ones. Ditch your current persona now and you'll be in a better spot at the end of it all.

Now, whenever you read this again, you could post a response protesting, you could post something agreeing, or you could take Marmot's advice, swallow it, remember what I've said and move on. And you should take Marmot's advice, it's very good. Sleep tight.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 July 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

No, I really do talk that way. I'm not putting anything on; I've always been naturally (and sometimes irritatingly) verbose.

And James, I AM British, but that shouldn't be a barrier. I'd prefer anything to the Arctic Monkeys...oh, and our island and peoples are lovely, you should come visit sometime...

BED!

you might want to check out posts by this dude ian reese-morane or whatever dude's name was - very precious, anglo scarfy, his style/taste/everything was nearly identical to yours. identical. and here's the thing: dude was screwing his mom. so when alot of people read yr posts right or wrong they're thinking 'this guy fucks his mom' and alot of people find that repulsive, like almost as bad as liking gay dad repulsive. so maybe pipe down a little more, lose some of yr sparkle. or maybe just start posting as ian reese-moraine is on the scene againe that way you can borrow some of that motherfucker's immunity.

Part of me thinks Louis Jagger is Calum in disguise, or another regular taking the piss. But if we can give him the benefit of the doubt for a second and assume he's real, you *really* want to go down the route of banning people/making them change their personality just because they annoy you?

That seems just a tad on the harsh side. I'm not entirely comfortable with Ned and others dictating how people should act. There are stacks of irritating people on ILX. Take the piss if you must, tolerate them, ignore them, whatever. But banning them? Seems a touch harsh.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 31 July 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Ailsa, don't worry, no one is actually going to ban him.

That Assasin's Guild site is insane. I think my friend's brother is a member and I accidentally ended up at one of their parties last autumn. I was the only one there not in red and black medieval dress, apart from my friend's dad. I had a very good laugh watching him unashamedly perving over an ample-bosomed serving wench.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 31 July 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Coincidentally, three of them were librarians, so Ned is just being one of those self-hating roleplaying goths.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 31 July 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

No, I didn't think anyone would, but I still find it a bit weird that it might even be considered a possibility by anyone as a way of dealing with people who are annoying - even as a joke. The "change your persona because I don't like you and neither do some other people" tack seems a bit wrongheaded too.

I remember as a yout' wandering around freshers' fairs and noticing these jesters wandering around all in their medieval and gallant attire, and you're watching 25 Aspie IT students surrounding one slightly nervy, vaguely dumpy girl in a merry widow or leather corset or something and the only thought you can process is "You do realise you're going to get the shit raped out of you by at least four of these guys, right?"

Yeah, I was wondering if the bat signal had gone up to the random googling masses. But surely worth keeping him for this exchange:

Rohan: I can;t help wondering what music people on here (yes I'm a random googler, but intend to hang around...) will agree is good?

Geir: The "music" most people here tend to like is rap. Which explains very well why they don't like proper music like Dodgy.

Ditch your current persona now and you'll be in a better spot at the end of it all.

No offense Ned, but do you see how this reads? "Be like we want, not like you are, or fuck off". Is ILM all about having to be a certain kind of person to fit in or something these days?

As irritating as they may be, people like Gier, Momus, Calum, Ethan, Deej and whoever make the whole of ILX what it is.

I know I sound a little sub-Momus myself saying this but I'm really suprised that people have taken to telling newcomers what kind of PERSONALITY they are allowed to have in order not to get shat upon from a great height by other people. ILM ain't doing itself any favours in the personality stakes itself, you know guys.

I didn't say "stop talking about shitty britpop and using superfluous adjectives". My advice was more technical.

Marmot 4-Tay: The root cause of dragon hatred among power metal bands. (marmotwo, Tuesday, 1 August 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

I've noticed that I only give unreasonable amounts of shit to people who remind me of myself when I was in high school and college, because I really can't stand who I was then. In Louis' case, I give him unreasonable shit because he reminds me of myself in elementary and middle school. I can couch the aggression as advice/school of hard knocks, but it's really "ew, don't remind me."

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 02:00 (nineteen years ago)

i still say there's at least 100 faceless corny indie fuxxxors nearly identical posting on ilm without a peep every day! why complain about this one particular rat in the shithole?

Whitman has quite a good point.

Blount, that might actually be the most offensive thing written about me here so far, and you may want to see someone about that stuck record you're playing, entitled 'faceless corny indie fuxxxors'. You know jack about me or my musical values.

Heh, now to bring loathing down upon me...
The Levellers - the very frist band I loved... And haven't stopped in the 12+ years since...

The Offspring - does anyone else find themselves liking their fav bands worst albums just because "it may not be them at their best, but it's still them" ?

Ocean Colour Scene - To be fair I wasn't there from the start, but I'm making up for lost ground, and also, no bad albums that I've heard as yet...

Feeder - Wow. Great band. recently spent £50 on their B-sides collection off eBay...

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 07:16 (nineteen years ago)

doesnt j blount like corny indie anyhow? besides, corny indie + nastiness is even more corny indiarrifc.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 07:22 (nineteen years ago)

This thread is horrible. I'm especially horrified at Ned as LJ hasn't even mentioned 'Loveless' but joking aside I think that all of you are being needlessly nasty and unpleasant.

Guys and gals, he'll calm down. Now I think this really nasty thread that contains a number of personal attacks should be deleted as mentioned in the FAQ or do they not count anymore?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

I put 'Louis Jagger' and 'Haberdager' into the search engine and NO posts came up, bizarrely. So I still can't find anything particularly dumb posts by him.

Rohan Chadwick -- he's gotta be calum, right?

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

This is the thing, if you Google "Rohan Chadwick" he appears to be a real person (and frontman of a really shitty indie band). But it's also what I first suspected when Louis J turned up: a regular has gone all IDENTITY THEFT on us to make their trolling more believable.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

There are some very interesting assumptions being made here.

Could be. What I'm getting is that someone is being told what to say and how to say it so he can "fit in" when his main crime seems to be verbosity and an (albeit naive) assumption that everything he says is right.

Ditch your current persona now
seems to me a worse thing to say to someone than anything I've read from the latest nominee for banning.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not sure what 'assumptions' ned's referring to tbh.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

I really hate this thread and what I am seeing on it. I agree with Onimo.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

I find it kind of sad and amusing that the person most aggressively going after this guy...

(and telling him that "[we] wish you were dead", which is the ugliest thing I've read on ILX in a long, long time)

...is also, of all the long-time posters on ILX, the person whose posting style most closely resembles LJ's! I mean, Whitman Mayonnaise OTM x 100 -- this is "narcissism of small differences" city.

lurker #2421, inc. (lurker-2421), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

"Ditch your current persona now" should become a new catchphrase.

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Norman and I have been talking about this offboard a bit. If he wants to add anything here he's more than welcome. I will simply say this, and Louis can correct me if I am wrong -- aside from a quick Electric Soft Parade crack, I don't believe I've condemned Louis for his musical taste at all, and neither have I ever assumed he's incorrigible, nor have I *ever* said he should be banned from the board. Quite obviously I'm not perfect -- and I believe I pointed out to Louis more than once to him that his posting style did kinda remind me of me in total overdrive. Call me therefore quite aware of how that style doesn't always succeed -- to quote myself from upthread, "I am hardly immune to ill-timed attempts at humor, self-dramatization, etc." -- and why I think Marmot's advice remains completely sound. I have yet to see anyone disagree with it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Louis totally reminds me of me when I first arrived.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

nor have I *ever* said he should be banned from the board

but you did suggest he should "ditch his persona" which to me amounts to "I don't like you so you should change" and elsewhere wished he was dead. This seemed a bit excessive to me, not to mention out of character for you - it almost had me saying "Heavens!"

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Marmot's advice remains completely sound.

Telling someone that a largish bunch of internet users wish them dead (even in jest) is not. But, y'know, if you want to assume the mantle of speaking for everyone here, I want to make it very very clear that I'm not one of this everyone for whom you speak.

s'funny you know, I hover about here and don't say that much,- there seem to be many far more knowlegable folks on this board than myself most of the time - but it seems that the one thing that really annoys people on discussion threads is over enthusiastic naivety. I've seen it several times before, and I wonder why this should be so. This board is called 'I love music' and Louis clearly does just that. Moreover he wants to share and learn, why don't you just let him? if he makes a tit of himself, well so what? I guarantee that at some point in our lives we've all done the same.

Peace brothers.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

There is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

That's a distortion of Godwin's Law though, such as it is. It actually just says: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)
