Where else has he posted? I'm guessing he must be quite hilarious.

The list of banned usernames on ILE mainly consists of spammers, bato sockpuppets, nude spock sockpuppets, people who post direct links to malware and racist trolls.

Do you guys understand multiple layers of irony or just one? I don't think what Darramouss said makes him a racist, since for all we know he could be black. There is such a thing as a joke which prominently features a concept you do not support, the absurdity of which provides the humor (ie. laughing at the ridiculous of the statement). If you don't understand, try watching Conan O'Brien.

Scorpion Tea (Dick Butkus), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

No need to be condescending.

did you happen to watch the episode of oprah in which dave chappelle's just come back from his africa? there's a bit where he's talking about the 'pixie sketch' that i think is very appropriate here:

chappelle explained how during the filming of a certain racially-charged bit (about a 'race pixie' that compels people to act in stereotypical ways) he was distracted by mocking laughter from a white crew-member. he said it was the first time he noticed people laughing at him rather than with him and that it really shook him.

this strikes me as kind of similar. i don't doubt that it's possible to find the particular image funny and ironic (tho i don't), even without dragging race into the equation. but it's damnably hard to make that claim when somebody suddenly bursts into blackface character.

to be fair i'm not offended, but i find it sort of skeevy to imageflood the subsequent thread with a series of 'pokey-pokey-you-offended-yet?'.jpgs. i'm reminded of the first time i said 'damn' in front of my mother. she flipped out and started screaming. because i realized i'd crossed some bad line, i figured it'd be better to prove swearing was no big deal worth punishing, so i told her that i "swore all the time, even including saying crap and shoot and dang" which netted me an ass-kicking instead of the 'ahh, he's mature enough to handle cuss-words' speech i expected. likewise, trying to cover up a gaffe by diluting its potency with other, lesser, subsequent gaffes doesn't do anything but draw more negative attention to the initial offense.

so give it a break and leave it alone and hopefully nobody'll have to get banned.

rems (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

weirdly, the 'race pixie' bit came on while i was writing this and i had to stop and watch it. it was funny!

rems (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

The humor of the initial joke, which went right over heads, apparently, is the expression on the newscaster's face. It is as if he is thinking either:

A) "Holy shit, I'm busted!"
B) "Oh shit, close enough!" Since there is a running truth/joke about black guys getting unfairly accused/harrassed by police all the time just because they kind of look like another black guy who did something a few blocks away.

Darramouss probably made the joke because his expression does resemble one of, "Oh shit, whitey gonna lynch me!" which is no more racist than if some black comic said the same damn thing, which is highly probable.

Scorpion Tea (Dick Butkus), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 06:03 (nineteen years ago)

Plus there is also the absurdity of the sheer possibility of a news reporter reporting some crime he himself committed, completely regardless of any race issues whatsoever.

Scorpion Tea (Dick Butkus), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 06:06 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck it, I've banned him. If any non-trolls want to make an argument for while lame blackface caricaturing is acceptable, or why ILE will otherwise be the poorer for his absence, I'll listen.

Other mods can reverse it if they want but I'm not comfortable with letting this one slip by.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

He seemed ok on ILG. I think ILE does bad things to people.

I'd vote "wrist slap and tell him to stop acting the cunt" but fuck it, it's not my job to moderate.

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

Agree with Onimo. He was yellowcarded on ILG for minor mod sass, but other than that, he's fine over there. But ILE does indeed do strange things to people. Though he's certainly no worse than our current crop of resident trolls.
Also, attitudes to new posters on ILE are often dismissive and/or intimidating, which n00bs probably find rather frustrating.

Final point: if he's banned, there'll be no ongoing ILE hate campaign, and we will surely all fall apart.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

I banned him specifically because of the racial caricaturing not because of his other behaviour.

I'm sure someone will argue that it's a hilarious multi-layered joke too complex for PC Nazis like myself to understand. But frankly the content of his other posts has left me largely unwilling to give him the benefit of the doubt in the way I might with another poster.

Although if it circumvents another tedious 'BAN HIM!' mod board frenzy then that's an added bonus.

i don't care that he's been banned but i'm concerned about so many people's reactions being that they don't care and so it's ok. like, if he was really worthy of banning, wouldn't we be saying "good riddance" a la jay blanchard who was not attempting any sort of humor?

I've unbanned him. He can consider it a yellow card in this case, although given that Darramous hasn't even complained about his ban, I doubt he's especially bothered. I don't regret having banned him in the first place, and if it were wholly up to me I'd keep him banned, but people I respect here seem to think otherwise, so fair enough. Not you, G-Kit, I know he's a mate of yours.

I'm not an unfair, capricious or otherwise heavy-handed moderator. I try to steer clear of pointless ideological disputes on the future of the boards. I've never let my personal feelings for a poster influence my treatment of them here (and heaven knows, I probably have more than many of you). But I am exceptionally sensitive towards 'comedy' racial accents, online or in real life. After the many, many, many times I have been subjected to them myself, I'm perfectly capable of deciding what's racist and what isn't.

I believe this was racist. For a long time in my life I tried to laugh off things like this, because it's just a bit of fun, isn't it? Because I didn't want to look like a killjoy, like the only one who can't take a joke. Because of the feeling you're making a storm in a teacup. But actually, no, that's not right.

When I banned Darramous I was partly trying to nip him in the bud and save us from the usual group of bored office posters turning him into another lame trolll cult figure. But mostly I was trying to send out the signal that this sort of thing shouldn't be acceptable on ILX. Has ILX really got to the stage where people can throw around the term 'political correctness' without a shred of irony? I'm sure "Oh massa dem gawn got me nawww!" sounds like a hilarious daring joke to some of you, but speaking as a non-white person, every time I come across a 'comedy' racial accent, it hurts in a way some of you evidently just don't understand.

I hope you can all appreciate that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 12 November 2006 08:56 (nineteen years ago)

Well said Matt.

However, I don't think "save us from the usual group of bored office posters turning him into another lame trolll cult figure" is much of a justification, or else you'd have grounds for banning, say, RJG or teh_kit or, gasp, Louis Jagger, all of whom have, shall we say, a personality that can rub people up the wrong way, and all of whom I actually quite like. I know we went over this on one of the Ban Louis Jagger threads, and I've made my views on it quite clear.

Darramouss is by no means my favourite poster - he had a go at me for no obvious reason which is never a big selling point in my book - but he's been reasonably entertaining on the Lost thread and I have it on good authority that he's been harmlessly contributing all over I Love Games for a while. But I think even hinting at going down the "save us from people who are easy targets and punish the last straw that broke the camel's back" is wrong. It's too subjective, for one. Also this is how Nazi Germany started"!

Anyway, it's not up to me, I know. The unbanning is mostly symbolic as far as I'm concerned. I wasn't expressing concern over his banning from his point of view, more the principle over why it was done. He hasn't (to my knowledge) shown any more signs of racism, so I'm inclined to write it off as a (very) stupid joke* - feel free to ban him if he does it again, as far as I'm concerned, but perhaps the slap on the wrist may stop him doing it again.

(do we know he's a he, by the way, I'm just guessing. Oh noes, I'm sexist!)

* but I understand that it's more than that to some people. Also that it wasn't even remotely funny. But that whole thread was a trainwreck from start to finish.

There are probably other people that annoy people more, but I used you, Louis and RJG because I notice it more when people are annoyed by people when I can't see what's that annoying about them)

grimly, he's far from the only one who posts stupid comments on well-meaning threads with the intention of upsetting people. Hardly ban-worthy, is it?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 12 November 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

ach, no, it's not. it just pushed a button i didn't even know i had, that one.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 12 November 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

His only intention posting on that thread is to piss people off. Fuck him. I'm sorry I said anything on his behalf.

You don't say "Who?" on an RIP thread because you're looking for information, given that you're already on the fucking internet and it would take all of 2 seconds to find out "who".

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Sunday, 12 November 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

They could have at least spelt my name right in the title of this thread and not left off the extra S on the end.

Darramouss :D (Darramouss ftw), Sunday, 12 November 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

You could at least realise that you've been given a second chance and stop acting like a cock.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 12 November 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

If I was that bothered I would have asked to be unbanned myself. Surely the fact that I didn't tells you how seriously I'm taking all of this?

Darramouss :D (Darramouss ftw), Sunday, 12 November 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

As I said, I wasn't standing up for you particularly, just querying the principle of banning people and reasoning that goes into it. Really though, don't go acting the dick then wondering why people are turning this into a witch-hunt.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 12 November 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

If people want to have a go at me in threads I post in fine, but on here it reeks of running to teacher.

Darramouss :D (Darramouss ftw), Sunday, 12 November 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

But if you're not taking any of this seriously then you don't care what anyone thinks. Right?

Right?

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 12 November 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

I bow to your superior logic *bows*

Darramouss :D (Darramouss ftw), Sunday, 12 November 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Sunday, 12 November 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

Lol I'm not a racist casual or otherwise. If people choose to take things the wrong way that's up to them. I'm past caring now you can all go and fuck yourselves :)

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 13 November 2006 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

Darra & Gzeus have done plenty of yellowcardable offenses over at ILG, which JW, dan perry, and Tombot can tell you about, but nothing worth overt banning, yet.

This guy is giving a clear indication that he doesn't give one fuck about anybody here, and he seems to be basically only interested in winding people up. IP banned.

Sorry for standing up for him, guys. I was being a tree-hugging nambly-pambly hippie give-people-a-chance sort of a person, and I was WRONG. He's a twat.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for doing this to me, Darra. It doesn't feel at all like you put a bag over my face and punched me in the back of the head.

I see right through Darramouss' tough guy act! This is nothing more than a Lemmy Kilmeisterish "take me the way I am" shtick with a Norm MacDonald "I'm just being silly, wink wink" "fuck you" shtick.

He just received a slap on the wrists and he doesn't appreciate it. It's not so hard to see why his response is what it is, is it? You expect a character like this to come back with his tail between his legs?

FOR THE RECORD I don't think anything either GZeus or Darramouss did on I Love Games was particularly yellowcardable, let alone bannable.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

See Darramouss says "WoW sucks" all the time and I kind of don't care because I'm not him and his enjoymenyt of the game is unrelated to my enjoyment of the game.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Srsly, I have had to restrain myself from replying "FUCK CHRONO TRIGGER" to practically every GZeus post (esp the FFXII ones).
He makes me want to hate Sega and NEC, too.

I guess he doesn't really love games, then. I was getting pretty bored of the internet. And then I found this and, better yet, this. So much easier than spending a small fortune to slowly collect all this stuff.

Totally Different Guy Now (Dick Butkus), Friday, 17 November 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Does GZ have Asperger's? (Seriously - I'm not just trying to be an ass by asking)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 20 November 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

someone already asked him and he said yes.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 20 November 2006 02:51 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, it was Darramouss!

Have you got aspergers GZeus? You seem unable to let this go....

-- Darramouss (darramous...), September 27th, 2006 12:56 PM. (Darramouss ftw) (link)

I can type period.
Writing is like a 5 year old who didn't study.
All I know is I often type the same mistakes as I write, but it's alot faster, easier on the brain(headaches from writing) and I can fix the mistakes more easily.

In any case, typos have nothing to do with literacy. it's a TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR.

And yes, I do have aspergers.
I've made my point.

There seems to be no more misunderstanding as to what my point was, and i no longer have anything to say if that is the case.
I do find it strange that it took me writing a blamed DISSERTATION on this to get people to understand that comparison is a good way of determining the value of something...

Even SUCK is a relative term! In Brazil, the Master System DOESN'T COME SLOSE TO SUCKING. It RULES there.
Here, it's basically POINTLESS.
I'm NOT going into why. Wiki it.
Point HERE is that comparing GOOD and BAD things is a good way to see how much BETTER or WORSE they are.

Just saying "That's STUPID because...IT'S STUPID!" Isn't productive.
Neither is "That's stupid because...I don't like it!" or "...it's difficult!" Not good enough.
Relative terms need a baseline.
Mine in this case is CT.
Your might be different.
So what?
you know what they say about opinions and assholes...they're both all over ILX.

Requisite thread exit insult:
TOMBOT, you are an angry angry douche of a manchild.
That, my good man is turnabout. Fair play, and true.
I no longer feel any need to use any level of tact with you.
"My thread!"
Public forum.
Too bad, so sad.
I weep the tears of a crocodillian while I draw a bow across the globe's most liliputian chordophone.

Feel free to express your opinions about the subject I ever post a thread about. If you act the same, expect a simple report to a mod, as you're worth no more of a my time.
