1) is it at all possible to make vimeo links embed like youtube does?
2) would it be possble to make youtube embeds be in 16:9 instead of 4:3?
youtube embeds are the raddest and i think its awesome they work so easy but these are just 2 suggestions to make them better
if its possible to do these 2 things w/o days and days of coding i think it would be cool!
thanks!

― ⚓ (gr8080), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link
From looking at the logs, most ppl click "Bookmark" then choose another of their bookmarks to read. So the thinking here is that it jumps you back to your bookmarks to save you scrolling or w/e.
It's taking a bit of getting used to, I admit. Can we give it a couple of days?

― future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link
haha ok.
i was totally unaware until you changed it, but i guess my pattern is get to last post/post i want to stop on -> click bookmark -> read last post -> click permalink (so last post is now at top of page) -> pick from remaining bookmarks
so i guess you're saving me some clicks, i just need to re-train myself
― ⚓ (gr8080), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link
From SNA, I open a bookmarked thread in a new tab, click 'Bookmark' in that thread, then open a new bookmarked thread from my SNA tab. So I do what the logs indicate, but not in the way it looks in the logs.

Ha, this is brilliant, and 2 hours ago would've saved me the trouble of looking up how to do Page Up/Home on a MacBook Pro (not before I accidentally managed to shut it down by pressing some combo of Apple key and what looked like it might be a Page Up button).
Thanks!

I don't like it, personally. But I do *tend* to read the last post before clicking the button, so I guess I can live with it if I have to. I usually click to SNA rather than other bookmarks.

Can I just... I have another question - didn't ILX use to remember your css choice when you logged out?
Because now, every time I remove my cookies and forget to exclude ilxor's cookie, I have to go "i want to change the way the site looks" again after I log back in. I think I remember I didn't always have to do that?
― StanM, Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link
Hey Stan, if I remember rightly, and it is a few years ago now I wrote this stuff, I made the stylesheet be stored in a cookie, instead of most of your preferences, which are stored in the database.
This was so that people could set themselves up with one stylesheet at work and another at home. They might want to be more inconspicuous at work.
None of the software has changed in the past few years except what this thread is talking about.
― Keith, Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link
(Oh to fully answer, I think there was a day back in the beginning where I did store it in the database - it's still in there; it's just not used, but it was probably in 2007 now).
― Keith, Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

But for those who bookmark as we read, it wasn't easy to get back to where we left off. Once we were back to the top, we had to refresh and click back on the thread, or just do away completely with our preferred bookmarking method.
I hate two button Home/ End navigation. My last laptop was a Vaio , which is two-button everything - volume, brightness, Home/End, wifi. I only had it bc I got it for free. One of my criteria for laptop purchases is minimal two-button operation and not-stupid keyboard layout (e.g., on my boss' IBM Thinkpad, the Ctrl keys are right next to the space bar - grrr).

This may be a stupid question because I am the only person in the world that uses Blog View, but has something gone weird with it lately?
New threads are just not turning up on blog view at all. Or maybe it's not just new threads, but it seems random which threads turn up on blog view and which ones go missing.
But either way, it's looking mighty weird?
Thanks in advance if you have a moment to check this out.

That's weird. I thought at first it might be that those threads were on boards I had chosen not to display? But unfortunately sports threads still turn up on the blog view even when they're hidden from SNA.
The only thing I've done differently recently is I turned images off due to bandwidth issues. I'll try switching them back on and see if the threads reappear.

But unfortunately sports threads still turn up on the blog view even when they're hidden from SNA.
The good folk at I Love Football decided in their wisdom that the English Premier League was so ubiquitous and Bestest League In Teh World that it deserved an ILE audience so you can't hide that without hiding the biggest board.

― ⚓ (gr8080), Monday, 5 March 2012 20:43 (twelve years ago) link
the ilxor.com/www.ilxor.com thing is intentional to let people use two diff accounts at once
I wish autodetected ilxor links would use relative URLs to avoid the problem with cross-links
― valleys of your mind (mh), Monday, 5 March 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link
It's just the way I did it - you could call it a mistake. The board link doesn't use what you are currently on, it picks it up from configuration, which is set when an admin (i.e. stet) opens the site. Stet must use ilxor.com so it set the domain to be that. The thread link just picks it up from whatever you're currently set to, so if you're ilxor.com, the thread link will show that, and if you're www.ilxor.com, the thread link will show that.

If I get a chance, Silby. I actually did Vimeo ages ago because Grady asked, but it's not deployed yet. That has its own challenges, so it won't be in the next month or so, but maybe some time after that, if Stet's got some time too.

hows about an actual tag where people can just put in the 'v' number, rather than an entire link? easier to parse and you get to control the rest of the url

if you search in the top box for displayName:"a puppy" you get posts by a puppy.

There used to be a cool feature where when you'd bookmarked a thread it would send you back to the top of the page. Too many people disliked it so it got dumped but I really miss it, it mirrors my behavior exactly. Please pretty please can there be something in the preferences to turn it on or off, default off for those who don't like change? It work or save me a lot of annoying scrolling on my phone.

Oh yes, my apologies Darragh.
Stet, darraghmac proposed returning the name of Flag Post back to the original Suggest Ban. He feels that the renaming has had a deleterious effect on the slasher film-like, "who will be the next to die get banned" atmosphere of ilx that he deeply cherished.

I have just got an Xperia Z2 Android and it's behaving really oddly.
It loads ILX in Chrome, but has done so on an old setting - it's got a previous display name, isn't registering new bookmarks and doesn't update bookmarks or accept bookmarks updates. I've cleared the cache with no effect.
Any ideas?

Whilst we're on youtube embeds, they haven't been displaying on iPad safari and chrome for a while. it might be a problem with the css, I can get it to occur in chrome or safari with old.css, new.css and newold.css. Where the youtube should be you just get whitespace.

Taking yesterday because it's easy, there were:
11,078 unique IPs visiting ILE13,896 unique IPs visiting ILM
(Some of those IPs represent big blocks of users, though - eg the whole NHS shows up as one IP)
Also, I know you have said before you can tell 90% of users use SNA, but can you tell how many SNA users have it so they cant see anything from ILM?

the search function seems to have trouble parsing double quotation marks, fyi.
for instance, try searching for thread Donald Fagen, "Sunken Condos" (2012).
these search terms are successful:
sunken
these search terms are not successful:
"donald fagen sunken condos 2012""donald fagen sunken"condoscondos""sunken condos""condos" 2012"
in general, if a word in a thread title or post is bounded to the right by a" double" "quotation" 'mark", it won't show up in the search results for that particular word. and if a string of words in a thread title or post is partly quoted and partly unquoted, it won't show up in the search results for that particular string unless the search inquiry reproduces the post's typography (w/r/t quotation marks) precisely.
...or something like that. I notice that the problem only seems to affect posts from about 2006 onwards. for example, just about every year since 2004 there has been a detrius thread with the exact same formatting in the title:
This is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the detrius that accompanies the "End of the Year in Cinema" -- 2004 (started by Eric H. (Eric H.) on board I Love Everything on Dec 2, 2004)This is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the detrius that accompanies the "End of the Year in Cinema" -- 2005 (started by Eric H. This is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the detrius that accompanies the "End of the Year in Cinema" -- 2005 (started by Eric H. (Eric H.) on board I Love Everything on Dec 2, 2005)
This is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the detrius that accompanies the "End of the Year in Cinema" -- 2007 (started by Eric H. on board I Love Everything on Nov 14, 2007)
This is the thread where we discuss matters pertaining to the detrius that accompanies the "End of the Year in Cinema" -- 2008 (started by Eric H. on board I Love Everything on Nov 11, 2008)
the search term "detrius" (with or without quotes) pulls up all detrius threads from 2004 onwards. but the search term "end of the year cinema" only pulls up the 2004 and 2005 threads.
tldr double quotes are problematic for the ilx search function. I just thought I should point out this issue.

google only works so well though, xpost. for one thing it doesn't allow you to search for individual posts (you can use google to find threads that mention both Ron Sexsmith and Devendra Banhart, but you'll have to sort through a lot of noise if you're only interested in a particular post that mention both of those gentlemen)
on the other hand the ilx search function doesn't permit thread-wide searches, which is a limitation of its own.

Login is a right pain in the ass. There are three different things you have to do, depending on whether you just want to sign in, want to add a post, or want to bookmark.
Suggest you start with logged-out functionality first, as it all works exactly the same whether or not you are logged in, in terms of displaying the boards and loading the threads. If you get all that done then you'll know you're going to get somewhere and it'll be worth considering the auth pain. I'll send you the zing code to help if you get that far.
As for the API, start with the "mobile device interface" link on the front page. For each of those URLs, just remove the ?stylesheet=mobile.xsl to get plain XML.

I put this in another thread, but stet/keith or whoever is in charge of code these days is more likely to notice it here:
After yesterday's maintenance I find I must log in to ILX every time I start my browser afresh. I allow cookies from ilxor.com and I check the Remember Me box each time I log in. Doesn't seem to make any difference. (I'm using IE11 on Win7. All upgrades installed afaik.)
wassup wit dat?
― a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Thursday, 25 August 2016 22:25 (eight years ago) link
Are the cookies definitely being saved? Not sure how you view them on IE, sorry
― stet, Thursday, 25 August 2016 22:48 (eight years ago) link
If the cookie format was not changed, I'm not sure why my previously stored cookies from before the maintenance would not have been recognized afterward. It might help if I could wipe all ilxor.com cookies and let the system start over with them, but I do not know that particular trick. Also, my login email address (& domain) no longer exist, and I don't know if System wants to see a valid address or not.
Worst case: I guess I could switch to Firefox or something.

― Keith, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:07 (eight years ago) link
It's possible that what's happening is a function of how it works and housekeeping...
The way it works is that I run a big job at the beginning that scans all the threads and posts and creates two index files for the search: one for threads, one for posts. The threads one is miles smaller; hence, why it should be faster. With hindsight, I wouldn't even have bothered with the threads one, as subsequent to developing the search, I decided it was useful to just hold the whole list of threads in memory at all times anyway for fast access.
Anyway, that's cool for startup, but the way it keeps the index up-to-date with changes since the initial build is that a batch job runs every five minutes, scans the database for new or changes to threads and posts and updates the index.
I'd have thought that ultimately, this would fragment the index file and make it slow and I for one certainly haven't recreated the index file for at least five years, which would be half a million updates to the index files at least! So guessing somewhat here, but if Stet hasn't recreated the index file since I last did, which I might doubt, as I don't think we ever talked about what that thing did before, then it's possible that's what's going on and all we need to do is stop the site, recreate the index file and start it again.
― Keith, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:17 (eight years ago) link
It's actually an all-new index file as of a couple of weeks ago, so I'm wondering if something went iffy there. No harm in making a new one, will kick that off later.

― stet, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:08 (eight years ago) link
The index file could potentially be screwed if it were created when the site was running when that happened. I mean, I don't know whether it would or not, but I've never thought through whether it would cause issues. Certainly the initial job reads big fuckoff lumps of the database at a time and indexes that then moves on to the next; the database changing under its feet could render some of the already-created index incorrect, although it'd be up to Apache Lucene whether or not that cause the whole thing problems or not.

I search for any variant of "let's shit our pants to something new", even without the word 'shit', and none of them work, except "Let's shit", and doesn't return that thread at all. I tried "our pants", "something new", "shit our pants", and it just hung for minutes at a time.

search: it depends on what you search.
e.g. search for Zimmerman: it hangs forever/timeoutsearch for Trayvon: it hangs forever/timeout
search for energy: immediate resultssearch for zooropa: immediate results (it's not that the end of the alphabet is slower)search for Ziegler: immediate result (it's not last names starting with capital letters either)

The search engine is Apache Lucene. Whatever works with Lucene will work with it. I didn't do anything special on top of it. Here is a page that describes some of the stuff you ought to be able to do, although to be fair, it may be that it does more now than it did back when this stuff was done:

Yeah, I think I've fannied it up though, by leaving it on, er, v2.3.2 while upgrading to Java 8. I see the lucene lib's on v6 now. Should do something about that.

TBH re: Lucene, I only used it because the database didn't support full text indices at the time, so ideally a pretty complicated mechanism involving batch processes and all manner of stuff keeping the search index up-to-date in line with the database could be removed and replaced with a bit of SQL.

I posted this question a while ago to another thread, but no one answered, maybe this would be a better place for it:
Why does ILX have two URLS, www.ilxor.com and ilxor.com, both of which require a separate login? I normally log in via www.ilxor.com, and often someone adds a link to some thread, but the link address has just ilxor.com, which means that if I open the link I have to login again, change site preferences, etc. What's the point of keeping these two separate, couldn't one of them just redirect to the other?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 11:13 (eight years ago) link
it's for when somebody in your life is on you about posting too much on ilxor.com, then you can say "no no, I'm much more disciplined now, I'm really posting a lot less to ilxor.com" and technically still be telling the truth because you were logging in & posting to a thread about some reissue whose name you'd already forgotten by the time you hit post on www.ilxor.com, instead of doing the same thing on ilxor.com. and vice versa. vital service imo
― though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 12:38 (eight years ago) link
What's the point of keeping these two separate, couldn't one of them just redirect to the other?
If you remember, there used to be *four* URLS -- ilx.wh3rd.net and ilx.p3r.net all used to work as well. We did once make them all point to www.ilxor.com but people complained because they would log in to one site as one sock and another site as another.
Which is a terrible reason, really. Perhaps we should just canonicalise it. Would help with the SEO too probably.

Weird in an unusable way or just a "this is different" way?
It has changed: I've set a viewport for mobile which stops browsers trying to fit the entire page into view (and making it tiny as a result). This was giving us problems with search, as Google was penalising it for being mobile-unfriendly and not showing ILX results on mobile.

Maybe there's a way of switching based on attributes, so mobile.css changes are part of new.css and selected if screen width is below a certain size.

hi stet - ive been working on a silly project, its a blog that uses an ilx thread as its backend, im almost finished with it, just wanted to make sure it was cool with you, i was planning on releasing it into the wild in case anyone else wants to use it, which im sure they wont
its just a lil ruby script that scrapes a thread once an hour then tweaks it into blog form, i cn show u the c0de if u want
anyway let me know if that sounds ok with you
― lag∞n, Friday, 31 March 2017 06:09 (seven years ago) link

― stet, Friday, 31 March 2017 11:44 (seven years ago) link
cool ha, its gonna require a new thread, u cant just use it on any existing thread cause i made it so a post with underlined text by the thread starter is what makes a new blog post, then the rest of the posts are comments, dont think theres anyway to really make that distinction besides putting something specific in the post, unless u wanted every post by the thread starter to be a new blog post, been testing it w this thread the most advanced blogging platform i have the main scraping/output functionality done i think but still have to do the css/scheduling/etc

― k3vin k., Tuesday, 25 April 2017 20:46 (seven years ago) link
So the problem I noted two posts back, it looks like it's related to whether you have images turned on or not. With images on, all of the YouTube embeds in a post appear, but with images off, the tail end of the post disappears after the first YouTube link. Hope that's helpful.

I noticed a while back that if a post includes both a youtube embed and a quote box, the quoted text disappears when you turn images off (but regular text is unaffected). I assume this is a related issue.
A funny thing happens when you turn images off...

― r|t|c, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 10:54 (seven years ago) link
No, it's different from the other embeds -- for every posted Tweet you need to make a call to Twitter's API to get a bespoke embed code. So it only takes effect on tweets posted from now on. I could think about a batch historical job, though.
That could be doable, I think. Will take a look.

um, i see what you mean. youtube videos are within an iframe with an explicit width and height. i can force the width to be 100% easily enough (or 90% or whatever) but can't yet find a way of maintaining the aspect ratio. maybe the aspect ratio is fixed anyway? (all the ones i've looked at are width="560" height="315", 16:9, but that doesn't help, i don't think)

Hey guys, I'm guessing there are updates afoot as I've been forcibly logged out a couple times this morning. Just wanted to let you know: I have images turned off in my preferences but they are currently showing up in threads anyway.

I have Show Images on, but I never see pictures from embedded tweets, just a link to pic.twitter.com. Is this a bug or by design?
― ArchCarrier, Friday, 18 August 2017 07:18 (seven years ago) link
I think that's a Twitter thing — there's some setting on their site that affects it. Also some AdBlock can interfere with them too.
― stet, Friday, 18 August 2017 17:24 (seven years ago) link
Ah yes, uBlock Origin was blocking all third-party domains. Now I see not just the images, but the entire tweet in Twitter-style. Thanks!

Hang on, is that possible? I have redirects like "ilm.ilxor.com" set up at DNS level, but they swallow all the sub-paths, so if I did it on www I'd lose all the other URLs, no?

It was originally there (it’s been there for years) so that I could redirect without forcing a particular domain choice. But I guess I can do that in htaccess

you can set up bare to www or www to bare (with CNAME's iirc, but it's been a while).
i'm not sure i understand the setup here, but i don't see why having other top-level names (ilm etc.) would change things.

This a small thing in the greater ilx scheme of things, but if it is simple to fix I would be very appreciative:
I had bookmarked the "have you ever masturbated in front of a woman thread," which I came to regret several posts later but failed to remove the bookmark before the thread was poofed. So the thread title still shows up in my bookmarks. The thread gave me the creeps and seeing the title every time I open ILX kinda sucks for me. I can certainly deal with it if the fix is a pain in the ass, but if it is a quick and simple thing, I'd love for you to remove this ghost of poorly formed threads past.

When you follow the link in this message to the other thread:

...that thread will load from "ilxor.com" not "www.ilxor.com" which will mean user cookies won't load and login won't work.
Somehow, the redirect to 'www.ilxor.com' didn't happen.

this has probably been asked 000's of times but...
what order are my bookmarks in? it seems so random.
― Heavy Messages (jed_), Friday, 27 April 2018 22:45 (six years ago) link
I'm afraid it was over ten years ago I did it and I can't remember. My immediate reaction was that it would be coming out just exactly as it's stored in the database, but that's ordered by message board and then by the thread ID (just in order of the thread age), but they're not showing like that, so not sure. I could go back and look at the code, but if it's okay with you C, I can't be arsed at the moment.
UPDATE: I have just been arsed, and it gets the stuff from the database, which would be ordered by message board, but it then sticks them in to a hash table, which means that it's pretty much indeterminate what order they will be read out from.
― Keith, Monday, 30 April 2018 22:19 (six years ago) link
If I'd stuck them in a list, rather than a hash table, then they would have come out in the same order as the database. It's that it is a hash table that makes it pretty much random. Can't remember why I did it that way, but there was most likely a reason, just lost in the mists of time and I really can't be arsed going and figured out why.
― Keith, Monday, 30 April 2018 22:23 (six years ago) link

what are these... blobs? screenshots anyone?
― niels, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 12:23 (six years ago) link
sadly no screenshot is possible as they have gone invisible hence the discussion
they render polls impossible (but this is good not bad) and also the search function, since you can't choose posts instead of threads to look through
― mark s, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 12:30 (six years ago) link
aha, interesting...
― niels, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 12:39 (six years ago) link
I think there are two different blobs being discussed:- radio buttons that you use to make choices in polls and searches- little circles at the start of thread titles on "new answers" pages that are either filled or not depending on if they contain unread messages based on your viewing history
― Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 12:58 (six years ago) link

― stet, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 13:22 (five years ago) link
Stet: not at computer so can’t diff right now but iirc old.css constrained images to a relatively small width. Caek.css let them be full size. Good for threads like wall o gina, etc.

compared to caek.css, old.css has this for images (bad and vulgar)
max-width:85%;max-height:800px;
and this for font (caek.css uses browser default, usually TNR):
body { font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;}

Hey y'all, I'm noticing a thing lately where if a url is posted with a closed parenthesis at the end, that closed parenthesis shows up in the post as plain text rather than as part of the url, which leads to an error when you click the (now incorrect) link. Like so:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Downey_(comedian)
NBD, just thought you should know.

ty, I will employ that when fanciness next overtakes me.
― Welcome To My Lifemare (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 18 September 2019 18:36 (five years ago) link
I agree - or not, since you said it was NBD - it is mildly bothersome, btw, but I don't know how often it happens the other way round, i.e. someone actually posts a parenthesis-less link inside parentheses and doesn't leave a space
theoretically the link finder could check whether the opening bracket is after the http or before but if we try to make it aware of all possibilities we'll bring SkyNet online before we know it
(I may try this line next time my boss asks for something I don't want to do)
― a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 18 September 2019 18:43 (five years ago) link
ever since twitter changed their site, links through to twitter posts on desktop - i.e. when images are off and you want to click through to see the tweet - usually result in a 'something went wrong' page on twitter, which stays that way even if you hack the referrer string off the URL! copying and pasting the tweet URL without the referrer string into a new browser window works. odd. i'm on Opera on a Mac.

otm! The tweets also take up a lot of visual space, relative to a link post, and take longer to load. However, this is a minor annoyance of mine, like, I do not think this is a horrible thing that should be fixed. Also, I support sic's anti utm stance, though primarily because I think editing the tags out when posting the link to ilx shows consideration and intent and discipline. Like, if I have to edit the "s" and the mobile urls out of youtubes, then people can do the same with fb links.

Looking at the code, I think the "5 minutes" bit is wrong - I suspect this is an hourly figure. (The 5 minute trigger doesn't clear the read counts). Needs a bit of attention though to be sure - eg it's clearly not counting the referrers from the site. Will dig into it when I get a mo.

but i swear it used to look more like chrome still does:http://www.koogy.clara.co.uk/Screenshot_chrome.jpg
seeing those both together it looks like a font weight thing, maybe a letter spacing thing. the firefox titles do look slighter than they used to. it's perhaps a bit more noticeable when the title is short.

the hide text thingy is grebt but seems to be thwarted by line breaks -- could its effects be made to continue (like other such tags) until it reaches a /hiddentext ?
― mookieproof, Saturday, 4 December 2021 01:05 (three years ago) link
that would mean it would have to start in one div and end in another, which is hard. ie
div first paragraph with some h hidden text /div
div second paragraph, still hidden /h visible again /div
(the divs might need p tags but same thing)

You can fake paragraphs..By having a minor piece of punctuation on the "break" lines.

Just tested this on HTML Playground: it seems to work even with a space as your "minor piece of punctuation" on the line between the faked paras.

― Maresn3st, Monday, 17 January 2022 23:59 (three years ago) link
Still [ img ] tags. You have to put the address of an image file in between the tags, not a web page, and if you link to an image on a major social media platform, it won’t display for many people.

stet/keith or whoever is in charge of code these days,
*third guy to get handed the mic at the Q&A*
hello, a comment and a question.
first of all, as always, thank you so much, and with every year that passes i appreciate more and more what a special place ilx is and how much of that is related the beautiful simplicity of how it works. i don't know anything about any of that but i feel the benefits of your work all the same. thank you!
the question: as you're probably already aware, chatgpt is starting to crawl the internet:
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/08/openai-details-how-to-keep-chatgpt-from-gobbling-up-website-data/
Without announcement, OpenAI recently added details about its web crawler, GPTBot, to its online documentation site. GPTBot is the name of the user agent that the company uses to retrieve webpages to train the AI models behind ChatGPT, such as GPT-4. Earlier this week, some sites quickly announced their intention to block GPTBot's access to their content. In the new documentation, OpenAI says that webpages crawled with GPTBot "may potentially be used to improve future models," and that allowing GPTBot to access your site "can help AI models become more accurate and improve their general capabilities and safety."
In the new documentation, OpenAI says that webpages crawled with GPTBot "may potentially be used to improve future models," and that allowing GPTBot to access your site "can help AI models become more accurate and improve their general capabilities and safety."
i was wondering if ilx will move to block GPTBot as well. for what it's worth, i register as a hard "please block GPTBot" vote

ILX had a number of prolific posters who contributed to its active community. Some of the notable and influential posters over the years included individuals like Sterling Clover, Andy K, Nick Sylvester, and Mark Sinker. These posters were known for their extensive contributions, insightful discussions, and sometimes controversial opinions, which helped shape the character of ILX as a unique online forum for music and various other topics. However, keep in mind that individual participation can change over time, and my information might not be up to date with the latest developments on ILX.

This isn't so much a question as it is an expression of puzzlement but...I just posted via Zing a short while ago and the DN displayed on my post is an older DN that is not the DN I'm currently using. Should that be happening? And might the fact of it happening have anything to do with the fact that my iPhone is old as shit (it's a 6)? I guess those last two actually were questions.
― Prop Dramedy (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 15 August 2023 00:52 (one year ago) link
It shouldn't be happening – there's a weird situation in the code where it can keep two copies of a user around. You end up with two different sets of bookmarks and sometimes two DNs etc. I've never been able to really track the cause of it down, it's (probably) not your fault tho

― Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 19 October 2023 17:27 (one year ago) link
not a bug - deliberate behaviour: there's a non-Javascript flow, which mobile devices use because they were buggy back in the day. You can see it on desktop if you disable JS in site settings
― stet, Thursday, 19 October 2023 17:56 (one year ago) link
It’s always worked on Android browsers though 🤷
― Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 19 October 2023 22:15 (one year ago) link
Yeah, I have a vague recollection of just stopping it doing the Javascript thing on mobile at all; however, that would've been just after the first iPhone launched, so when you say it's always worked on Android, well, it's kind of always not worked on Android, as when I wrote that bit of code, Android didn't exist, so it seems whatever mechanism I used to filter it out didn't work once Android appeared.
― Keith, Thursday, 19 October 2023 22:31 (one year ago) link

If you disable javascript for ilx then you don't see the full twitter embeds, only the text.
― Kim Kimberly, Saturday, 16 November 2024 21:08 (three months ago) link
Whoa I only just noticed the "Show Images (and other embedded media, like videos and Tweets)" option in Preferences.
― Kim Kimberly, Saturday, 16 November 2024 21:12 (three months ago) link
i have both javascript and ilx embeds enabled and always get only the blue text box, best of both worlds
the ilx way of handling twitter embeds is by far the best i've seen: text content is preserved even if the tweet is deleted without requiring posters to manually copy-paste it, and the readers don't connect to twitter servers at all unless they want to look at the media.
if bluesky embeds are allowed, please make them work the same if at all possible.

if you're using firefox, globally block twitter.com with uBO/umatrix, and configure libredirect to use xcancel for twitter links
this way you get the benefits of ilx's blue box text embeds and if you want to look at the linked media you can click the links and be redirected to the xcancel version
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/
― chihuahuau, Saturday, 16 November 2024 21:46 (three months ago) link
yeah, my suggestion was based on the embeds being embeds and not realising that stet had done something cleverer with them, copying them.
i do often click through though - images off - so libredirect could be handy, thanks
― koogs, Sunday, 17 November 2024 04:16 (three months ago) link
if your twitter embeds do not look like ilx quotes, then they are normal embeds and you're effectively browsing twitter. that happens only if all of the following are true:
1. embeds/images enabled in ilx prefs2. javascript for ilxor.com allowed in browser3. twitter.com allowed by the browser content blocker
if any one of the above is not true, twitter embeds are replaced by
ILX blue box text quotes and twitter hosted media is replaced by URLs
