Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Ehhh. Not that inspiring, huh?
And what's this "Supergirl and LOSH" book, then?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Things worth getting excited about:

Dave Gibbons DRAWING Green Lantern Corps. HUBBA HUBBA.
Darwyn Cooke on The Spirit
Bill Willingham drawing Shadowpact (which is such a shitty title that I may abstain for that reason alone)
Robin might be really, really good. Adam Beechen has written all of the Justice League Unlimited issues, and they are, on average, the best adventure comics put out by DC these days. And Karl Kerschl's pretty cool on Adv of Supes.

Things that make me go HMMM:

James Robinson on Batman. Has the potential to be DREADFULLY dull.
Ron Marz on Ion. Kyle Rayner's creator tackles the one major aspect of the character that he didn't create. Big fuckin' whoop. You're putting that up against DAVE GIBBONS DRAWING ALIEN GREEN LANTERNS? Ha ha ha, in the words of Daffy Duck, It is to laugh.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

X-post,

I can't tell if the Supergirl & LOSH will happen in Supergirl or in LOSH, or if it will be brand new title. The idea of Rucka writing LOSH = hubba (2x).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Are they gonna put The Spirit in the DCU? If so, shenanigans!

I'm also intrigued by BW writing & drawing Shadowpact, as Spirit of Vengeance Sexing The Atom's Purple-Faced Wife rates slightly higher than Secret Six in terms of being the Infinite Crisis mini that made me feel the least shame in being interested by Infinite Crisising.

Here's hoping the good Giffen does the damn thing for Blue Beetle. And where's the geekitude for Simonson on Hawkgirl, dammit? TURN HER INTO A MARMOT, WALT!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Also, don't know if I approve of Ivan Reis on GL. I think he's Canadian (or is that Ivan Reitman, I'm thinking of? Or possibly Rick Moranis?), so I should be all, SIS BOOM RAH, but the art on Rann/Thanagar War was pretty meh.

I don't know how they're going to shoehorn Denny Colt into the DCU. It would seem like a big fuck-up to put him in the present, but if they stick him in the 40s, who will care? (A: ME!)

I would rather see Chaykin write and Simonsen draw on Hawkgrill.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather see Simonson tag-team the w/a duties, actually, but I'll live for Chaykin drawing himself making out w/ Marmot Hawkgirl (or, um, Marmotgirl) every issue.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Forget the GIRL, give us Marmothawk.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Who cares? It's a marmot!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

cutting gotham central is a huge disappointment.
DCU wants me to buy two superman & two batman titles per month for the next year? laaaame. who iz gonna read CHECKMATE?

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

If it's Rucka's DCU version of Queen & Country, then count me in! Even if Freakish Metal Eye Batbabe is prominently featured.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

$20 says Checkmate will feature Metal Eye Babe teamed with de-Amazonizized Wonder Woman.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Twenty CANADIAN dollars, mind you.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

WW going from Themiscryan (sic) ambassador to super-spy? Yeah, sure. Just keep Cliff Richards away from the tableau (or the recording studio), and we're kosher, Rucka, mmkay?

What's the Canadian / rape exchange rate, Huk?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Now that Gov't's been toppled, it's a free for all!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

The idea of Rucka writing LOSH = hubba (2x).

Really? To me, the idea = being stabbed in the face (100x)

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

The Spirit and Brave & The Bold sound promising, though.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

The Spirit is already as doomed as Plastic Man is. It'll win a bunch of awards, get collected in some dynamic way, and then be cancelled at #18.

Brave & the Bold, howev, will lose Perez at #4, lose Waid at #10, and then run 1,097 issues written by Devin Grayson and drawn by Rob Liefeld.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

FINGER!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

xpost

Very true!

Waid and Perez seem like a good match. It's nice for Perez, anyway, since he is almost always paired with writers I don't like.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Agreed. For some reason, I really Perez Batman, even though it's a very Earthy Batman.
Has Waid ever done any significant Batman writing? I can't think of anything outside of JLA stuff.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I'd be happy to see the JLA franchise take a rest for a little bit. I actually imagine it coming back with a new name, which would be a nice gesture: golden age = Society, silver age = League, new age = something else?

Very psyched about Darwyn Cooke's Spirit, Simonson/Chaykin, and, yes, 52. Checkmate could be interesting if Rucka does it Queen & Country-style. Curious about Simone's Secret Six.

Come to think of it, I wish DC would let a lot of its franchises rest for a little while. I wouldn't mind not seeing Nightwing or Robin or even Flash comics for a few years until somebody comes up with a really interesting take on them.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Well, I guess Kingdom Come would fall under JLA, right? I don't know, I don't think he has.

Oh, this has been going around on other message boards, I'm copying and pasting it from Barbelith. This is from the newest issue of Wizard:

One Year Later, the DCU in 2006

One of these characters...

... will give birth in '06: Wonder Woman, Power Girl, Catwoman or Oracle

...will be stripped of their powers: Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Green Lantern (Hal)

...will become the mayor of a crime-riddled city: Wally West, Dick Grayson, Bruce Wayne, Oliver Queen

...will have amnesia and be unable to tell friend from foe: MM, Aquaman, Atom, Elongated Man

...will take the mantle of the most powerful hero in the DCU: Booster Gold, Animal Man, Kyle Rayner, Earth-2 Superman

...will become a criminal: Hal Jordan, Superman, Flash, Captain Marvel

...WILL BE THE ONLY ONE AROUND AFTER "INFINITE CRISIS": Wally West, Superboy (Connor), Guy Gardner, Nightwing

One of these teams won't survive Infinite Crisis: JLA, JLA, JLA, JLA

...will become the military's secret weapon: Cyborg, Wonder Woman, Red Tornado, John Stewart

...will destroy an entire country and kill millions: Braniac, Sinestro, Black Adam, Vandal Savage

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm. That's a good idea about the Justice League.

How about the Justice Academy - DC hasn't really done the Super Hero School thing, have they?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

J'onn J'onnz would be such a great headmaster!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

My dream list, by me, a dreamer:

One of these characters...

...will give birth in '06: PLASTIC MAN
...will be stripped of their powers: HAL JORDAN
...will become the mayor of a crime-riddled city: DETECTIVE CHIMP
...will have amnesia and be unable to tell friend from foe: BATMITE
...will take the mantle of the most powerful hero in the DCU: TED KORD'S DESICCATED ROTTING CORPSE
...will become a criminal: BATMAN
...WILL BE THE ONLY ONE AROUND AFTER "INFINITE CRISIS": GORILLA GRODD
...will become the military's secret weapon: AMANDA WALLER
...will destroy an entire country and kill millions: SHADE THE CHANGING MAN

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Hal Jordan doesn't have any powers. Unless you count ennui.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

What about the ability to go from zero to punchable in one word balloon?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Justice Infirmary! Superhero hospital, specializing in wounds brought about by grim and gritty new directions! Each issue features the death of a character in some way connected to the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League. Crimson Fox gets it in the debut issue!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Naturally, Dr. Fate is the chief resident at the Justice Infirmary.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Nurse Destiny!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

In an attempt to out-snark Matthew, I'd like to change this bulletpoint...

"One of these teams won't survive Infinite Crisis: JLA, JLA, JLA, JLA"

... to say the following:

"One of these teams won't survive a final 6-issue arc of hamfistedness written by the guy that almost single-handedly submarined the X-franchise & thought putting the Avengers in bomber jackets was A Good Idea: JLA, JLA, JLA, JLA"

Dead horses are fun to beat!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Hold on a second, Jackson! Let's back up to this Checkmate thing and why it's already drawing comparisons to Q&C.

Also, RIP Gotham Central.

Tiny or titanic bosoms?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Dude, it's a spandex book: TITANIC!

DC making Darwyn Cooke waste his time on The Spirit: The New Adventures #s 10-22 instead of writing his own stuff was stupid enough - if they stick it in the modern DCU, my brain will cry silently to itself at the new depths of moronitude.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

As far as I knew, there was going to be a Spirit/Batman crossover book, but that it was going to be the exception and not the rule. I'm confident that Darwyn will deliver on the Spirit book, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't rather see him on a creator-owned book even more.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

I don't think they "made" him do it as such -- he mentioned the job during a talk in Toronto, and seemed almost tearily chuffed about it.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

I think it was originally announced that the Batman/Spirit book and The New Spirit of Darwyn Cooke would both come out in December. Ho ho ho.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

but that doesn't mean I wouldn't rather see him on a creator-owned book even more.

Like The New Frontier, Matt? ;)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Has he ever done a creator-owned book?
He actually has a pretty slim comics resume, no?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

David made a funny!

If Cooke wanted to do NEW FRONTER II: EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN, I'd happily read it. But he'd mentioned that he had a few creator-owned projects that he wanted to work on when I talked to him in LA earlier this year and was interested to see what he'd come up with.

He also mentioned that he was offered something so big that he couldn't refuse it, that being the SPIRIT books, but he made no mention of what it was at the time.

And if NEW FRONTIER was creator-owned, it would have at least come out in a single volume...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

If Darwyn Cooke did a c/o project, do you think it would be like Michel Rabagliati's Paul stories? I think I like those. I think I like them a lot.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm not familiar with those, Huk.

As for the slimness of his resume, remember he's only been in comics for what, eight years now? He did a one off in something like 1988 or 1989, but then didn't do much of anything until the mid-late 90s. And prolific in the 90s-naughties is completely different than prolific in the 70s-80s (which would mean you're doing an average of one book a month, more like two, which is unthinkable for artists today.)

Justice League Unlimited (the comic) writer Adam Beechen taking over Post-IC! Robin. Could be really good. I've enjoyed JLU quite a bit more than reg'lar JLA stuff lately.

it still is, for lack of a better phrase, it is Queen and Country meets the DCU.

Did somebody spike Rucka's morning coffee with predictability pills this week?

I fucked up a tag in my Rucka post, didn't I?

But well, I've always had a soft spot for the character, and I like the kind of old-school-superhero-writing that Busiek does.

36. Rising Star - Don Kramer came out of nowhere to wow fans as artist on JSA for the past two years--now he'll get to ply his knack for drawing sprawling casts on an even bigger stage.

37. The Main Man? - Is Lobo going back to basics? We've heard whispers, but it's too soon to say...

38. Mr. Versatile - Greg Rucka can write anything from superheroes to comedy to epionage drama, and he'll be tested in every area over the course of 52.

39. Whodunnit? The Question will put Montoya's detective skills to the test with a mystery that ends up taking a year to solve.

40. Changing the Future - Booster Gold and sidekick Skeets will attempt to use their knowledge of the past from the future to prevent major disasters before they happen. Will they succeed, or destroy the timestream in the process?

41. JLA=S.E.X. - Two forer Justice Leaguers you would NOT expect will bump uglies by year's end. Awk-ward!

42. Who's Who - Each issue of 52 contains a two-page origin story on one of the DCu's heroes or villians, as written and drawn by top industry talent. Get caught up!

43. Crossing Over - A well-established character with a lot of history will make their first appearance in the DCU.

44. Bot that there's anything wrong with that - A new gay character make their first appearance in 52, before moving on to their own ongoing series.

45. 52 Wednesdays - The first weekly comic attempted in over 15 years-- since the demise of Action Comcis Weekly in 1989--52 will give fans a reason to get excited about going to the comic shops every single week.

46. Microsoft Man - Signing endorsement deals left and right, Booster Gold becomes a corporate hero, but when push comes to shove, who's pulling the strings?

47. Look! Up in the Sky! - A mysterious and powerful new character named Supernova will make his debut in Metropolis. But is this actually a famillar face with a new look?

48. Cover Me - J.G. Jones will provide the art for not one, not two, not 33 , but all 52 covers of 52. With Jones' smooth, innovative style, thats another 52 reasons right there.

49. Powerless - One of DC's biggest icons spends the years as a civilian, unable to prevent what they once would have handed with ease.

50. Don't get too attached - One of the six leads of 52 won't see the end of the year. Who'll bit the dust?

51. Dream Team - Morrison, Johns, Waid, Rucka, Giffen---any of these names is enough to get the average fanboy to wet himself, but ALL of them on the same book? Every week? Break out the adult diapers!

52. The Journey - By the time the first issue of 52 hits the stands, we'll already know where the DCU is headed thanks to the "One year later" jump, but more than half the fun is trying to piece together how everything got there as the mysteries unravel.

JOE BENNETT! Awesome!

New gay character! Can't wait to hear fan reaction!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

It sounds like it will be a Lady-Gay, which is, like, 8 million times more palatable to the jerk-off pundits on the msg bds than a Man-Gay.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

boo! I demand a man-gay!! I think they would have said lesbian if they were going to have a lady. Plus there is going to be Montoya non stop girl on girl action anyway.

Mark C (Markco), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that makes sense - Lady Gay could easily carry a title, too. (Plz prove me wrong, DC.)

The Lady Gay could be Montoya's lover!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Down-on-her-luck Montoya will see her bed become a revolving door of lovers -- one of whom will make her mark on the DCU before all is said and done. + A new gay character make their first appearance in 52, before moving on to their own ongoing series. = Lady-Gay: The Series

She will be the long-lost sister of the Bronze Tiger!

18. Ralph Dibny: The Next Step - Nobody in the DCU has suffered more in the past two years than Elongated Man, but in 52, Ralph Dibny tries to move on in way that will shock you. = SEX CHANGE!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

38. Mr. Versatile - Greg Rucka can write anything from superheroes to comedy to epionage drama, and he'll be tested in every area over the course of 52.

Where is Rucka's comedy? And hasn't most of his superhero stuff been sorta espionage drama? So shouldn't that read: 38. Mr. Versatile - Greg Rucka can write anything from superhero epionage drama to non-superhero epionage drama, and he'll be tested in every area over the course of 52.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Is it me or is this level of hype sorta Marvelous?

And Huk OTM about the versatility of said writer. I'd argue that most of his superhero stuff has been completely lacking in thrill power (which is why I'm reading the stuff in the first place.)

As long as there are big cliffhangers and the words "Next Prog" I'll be happy.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

It sort of happens with these thing. I hope it's genuinely exciting and that Waid, Morrison and Giffen manage to downplay Johns stupid tendencies.

But yeah, I'm excited.

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

For the record, I found Rucka's AoS issues featuring that 5th Dimensional guy to be intermittently rofflicious.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I found them desperately laboured. :(

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

A good thing about it is that it doesn't sound terrible.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Frankly, I'm jazzed about a lot of this, especially Rucka on The Question, but mostly, the weekly schedule. I got way into the thrill of at least anticipating each issue of the pre-Infinite minis, and of course the giddy nastiness of then making fun of them here.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

MORE LEAKED WIZARD EXCLUSIVES!!!

22 OYL title previews from Wizard(Spoilers)
Infinite Crisis Extra

DC Comics jumps ahead "One Year Later" in March- Here are 22 books to keep your eye on

Action Comics/Superman

Writers Feoff Johns (Infinite Crissi) and Kurt Busiek (Astro City) join artist Pete Woods (X-Men: Deadly Genesis) to take the Man of Steel on a eight-part odyseey, readjusting to a world he no longer feels he knows. "He's dealing with the ramifications of his past year," says Johns. "We're redifining him for the future."

Aquaman

The Series will not be cancelled as previously reported; instead, DC confirms Kurt Busiek and Butch Guice (Birds of Prey) as the new writer/artist team to steer the King of the Seven Seas in a new direction.

Batman/Dectective Comics

James Robinson (Starman) returns to comics after a three-year absense with artist Don Kramer (JSA) and Andy Clarke (Aquaman) and Leonard Krik (The Freshmen) at his side for a an eight-part adventure with Batman and Robin returning to Gotham after a year away to find corruption in City Hall and a new face behind the desk of the Police Commissioner. "This is James Robinson doing what he does best," says Editor Preter Tommasi, "peeling back the layers of character until you get right to their hearts."

Birds of Prey

One Bird is out of the picture and an unexpected replacement has come under writer Gail Simone's wing, "One of DCU's most dangerous villians joins the book, as an agent for Oracle," says Simone, who'll be joined by artist Carlos Sequira, "I think this is going to be our most exciting and unpredictable year yet"

Catwoman

She's pregnant! Writer Will Pfeifer won't reveal the daddy, but talker about how this will change Selina Kyle's life. "It's a wild little plot twist, but we'll use it to explorer some offbeat questions," says Pfeifer, whose artist on the book has not yet been anounced. "Has a lifetime of thievery prepared her for this? And while Selina is changing diapers, who's watching East End?"

Checkmate

The OMAC Project team of writer Greg Rucka and artist Jesus Saiz creat a new Checkmate with a mix of familar metahumans and "normals" runing the show. "Take a big chunk of The OMAC Project, take the concept of "Who Watches the Watchmen?" and throw in some James Bond and you've got Checkmate," says Rucka.

The Flash

DC holds to a firm "no comment" when it comes to the future of the Fastest Man Alive.

Green Arrow

There's a familiar face in the Star City mayor's office: Oliver Queen! What do writer Judd Winick and artist Scott McDaniel (Robin) have planned for hizzoner? "Ollie became mayor in order to save Star City," say Winick. "Ultimately, there's only so much you can do by puttin on tights and shooting arrows."

Green Lantern

Having gotten in some hot water on Earth, Hal Jordan takes to the stars for a dangerous rescue mission. "He needs to find the Lanterns he left for dead as Parallax," says writer Johns, joined by artist Carlos Pacheco. "The Guardians don't aprrove, so he needs a team of GLs willing to break the rules for backup."

Green Lantern Corps

Out of the events of the Recharge mini-series, the GLC goes monthly with comics legend Dave Gibbins pulling double duty as writer and artist for the first arc. "The Corps itself will be radically re-organized, more tightly disciplined and controlled," says Gibbins. "The Guardians will become ever more aloof and unfathomable, their Great Purpose ever more mysterious."

Hawkgirl

With Hawkman M.I.A., Kendra Saunders tries to fill the wings, but, as writer Walt Simonson notes, that's easier said than done. "She's trying to fill the void Carter has left, but she doesn't have his experience," explains Simonson, who is joined by artist Howard Chaykin. "Also, an ancient evil of S.t Roch is rishing up and causing violent, nasty stuff."

Ion

Kyle Rayner is reunited with his creator, writer Ron Marz, but is it with or without the Green Lantern Corps? "Kyle's story is still going to be tied to the GL mythos-- that's a part of who he is," promised Marz of his upcoming run with artist Greg Tocchini (Thor: Son of Asgard). "But the role he takes on is beyond anything he's ever experienced."

JSA

Alongside incomparable artist Rags Morales (Identity Crisis), DC Publisher Paul Levitz returns to characters he last wrote 27 years ago. "I've always liked the Justice Society because you've got a mix of young old people," reflects Levitz. "I'm looking forward to writing nes characters like Stargirl and playing with old favorites like Flash and Wildcat."

Nightwing

Does something happen to Dick Grayson in Infinite Crisis? New writer Bruce Jones (Vigilantes) will be chronicling a new man behind the mask, So where is Grayson? Jones (whose artist still has not been released)isn't saying. "readers will see a new Nightwing," says Jones. "Now established in New York City, he will deal with more formidable fores, new metahuman rivals and an unlikely new romance."

Shadowpact

The 10th Age of Magic has dawned and with it writer/artist Bill Willingham returns to the team he made famous in Day of Vengeance, promising plenty of unfamilar threats for DC's mystical underdogs. "A lot of bad things that were put down in the 9th Age are waking up," says Willingham. "It's a great time to resurrect really bad and terrible stuff."

Specture: Dead Again

A new Spectre rises in this three-issue mini-series by Pfeifer and artist Al Barrionuevo (Gotham Knights), but he's not the most willing Spirt of Vengeance. "He barely believes in the afterlife and wants no part of the Spectre's concept of Divine Justice," says Pfeifer. "Too bad he has no choice in the matter."

Supergirl

Kara's got a new writer, Greg Rucka. joining artist Ian Churchill as well as a new foe famillar to readers of the Superman titles. "She's Supergirl. That should ge great, but it sucks," says Rucka. "We're going to show just how much it sucks and what she does to make it great."

Superman/Batman

New writer Mark Verhelden (Superman) and artist Ethan Van Sciver (Green Lantern) take the World's Finest out of this world. "A strange, evil influence begings inpacting our extraterrestrial heroes and villians," shares Verheiden. "Look for surprising guest stars and tons of big action, Van-Sciver-style."

Teen Titans

The Titans get new blood in new regular artist Tony Daniel (The Tenth) and two new members: the mysterious Kid Devil and the deadly Ravager! "The first arc will see the Titans team with a new Doom Patrol against a new Brotherhood of Evil," reveals writer Johns.

Wonder Woman

While hot-babe uber-artist Terry Dodson (Spider-Man/Black Cat) has been confirmed as being part of the amazing Amazon's post-Infinite Crisis plans, DC has yet to release and information on either the writer or direction of the book. But the publisher promises both announcements will make major waves, so stay turned.

This all sounds atrocious - to buy a weekly Keith Giffen and Grant Morrison comic I have to have read every DC book for the last four years and care about what happened in them, AND think it's not a stupid idea for eg Ralph Dibny to take on the identity of his raped'n'murdered wife as part of a breakdown or CUNNING PLAN but either way involves the threat of him rootin' dudes? Sorry Grant, it's been a good eighteen years, but I think we're going to have to have a trial separation.

Are Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman going to die in some kind of weird murder suicide pact?

I'm finding it harder and harder to see how Infinite Crisis is going to change the DC Comics, even a little bit. It seems like it's going to be exactly the same, but way worse.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Exactly! What we're doing is figuring out exactly what it is that has defined Superman since the classic character was introduced in THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN, and then ITERATE THAT over and over again by having Batman and Wonder Woman talk about it.
Then we're going to ITERATE how Zero Hour defined the DCU for once and for ALL, but ITERATING the very best things about Team Titans and why that worked.
In short, we're throwing out everything that didn't happen between 1992 and 1994. And we're throwing out some of the stuff that happened in April of 1993.

Jim Lee's writing it for WildStorm (no word on artist, but Liefeld seems to be available and eager to work for DC again), it's called Ambush Bug: Buggageddon and it's all about how, y'know how Ambush Bug was always hip to the fact that he was in a comic book? DC's April Solicits are up now, and they don't seem to rebut Andrew's thoughts one bit. EXCEPT:
MAN-BAT miniseries by Bruce Jones and Mike Huddleston (whose cover looks really cool). REally, REALLY Matt Wagner or Mike Mignola should have done a Man-Bat mini (remember Mignola's Man-Bat sequence in Action Comics #600? I do.), but Huddleston lookes up to the task.

With a yellow hat
Never will we learn
Your 'mysterious origin'
Which is just as well with Geoff Johns in charge.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 January 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I thought Pantha was a Wildebeest genetic experiment (from Titans Hunt).
I'm astonishingly bored with this. As bad as Identity Crisis was (and it was awful), at least it had an element of intrigue to the actual story. I genuinely looked forward to the next issue. With Infinite Crisis, I think at this point I'm just reading because I've already spent $80 (or more) preparing to read it.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 19 January 2006 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Damn, Huk - you pulled a complete turnaround on the first IC! Me, I'm about 150 degrees away. Does this mean you wont read Justice League of Meltzer?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I AM DEEPLY DIVIDED ON ALL DC STUFF RIGHT NOW. Like I'm being pulled between Earth-2 and Earth-L. Part of me, OH WOW, JUST LIKE THE COMICS I READ WHEN I WAS NINE! GOODY GOODY! Other Part of me, Oh. Just like the comics I read when I was nine. Goody, goody.
But come on, look back to a little over a year ago, Id Cri was generating real OMG, WHAT NEXT?
But Inf Cri is mostly, I don't know, like the page where Alex (in NYC) Luthor (honour the Earth-3 flame!) is explaining to Power Girl's chest how he caused all the Mini-Series, and, pretty much, that's it. There it is. Crisis On Infinite Earths was no less muddily plotted and woodenly scripted, but there was at least the HUGE novelty factor of the scope of the thing and the genuine threat of Universal Extermination made clear from the very start.
Right now, the main threat seems to be, um, the Centre of the Universe is not where it used to be? Forget an oldfolks' home, howzabout an oldfolks' PLANET!!!

ON THE OTHER INFINITE HAND AT THE DAWN OF TIME GUIDING CREATION: Okay, I wanna see what happens to Flasher. Is this a repeat of the Mo/Waid Speed Force Zero Hour bizz times Are We There Yet starring Ice Cube? The Speed Force is gone? Has Bart gone to Heaven with Grampa? Will the Dead Speedsters Society take Superbrashboy on a tour of the Infinite Cosmos and open his Brother-Eyes to the Gospel of Maxwell Lord of Time Trapper?

Will I even still be reading DC comics by June (or whenever JLM debuts)?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I read it, and I thought the Psychotic Superboy ultraviolence mega-tantrum sequence was sort of hilarious in a "wow, this is how low they are willing to go?" batshit crazy sort of way.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:05 (twenty years ago)

The idea of a scary secret society of villains named the Wildebeest kind of sums up the inherent lameness of the post-Crisis DC Universe for me.

(Which is kind of why I like DC I guess - inherent lameness which is regularly improved upon seems more appealing than the frustration of reading Marvel, where inherent coolness is regularly ruined.)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Was the Alexander Luthor/Superboy thing meant to be a direct reference to the extremely similar Lex Luthor/Captain Marvel thing from Kingdom Come?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

That reminds me that I didn't even repost my repost of my original "how old is Geoff Johns that Kingdom Come had a formative effect jab" for IC#3. Is it okay if I pretend that it's intentional comment, that I couldn't even be arsed making a lazy jab at it?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Andrew, you're just plain old OTM about the Johns/Kingdom Come thing.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

For the record...Geoff Johns just turned 10:

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

I was just telling my friend that Infinite Crisis is a lot like some little kid playing out some bizarre "everybody dies!!!" story with every toy that they own. It even helps to explain why there are multiple Supermen!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

and the tear-away arms!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

And the pop-off heads!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

If that's all you're going to do with those toys, young man, I certainly hope you don't expect me to buy you any more!

Momma Johns-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

That's okay, Momma! That weirdo Keith from around the corner says he's got a bunch of toys he's not using anymore and he's gonna fix em up shiny and new for me to wreck, er, play with.

Baby Johns-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I enjoyed it!

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 19 January 2006 20:54 (twenty years ago)

oh man i just tried to read the wikipedia summary of infinite crisis and i did not understand a thing.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

i was actually kinda amazed that the one page luthor summary tiein explaining all the leadup minis and how it's all one story made as much sense as it did (albeit a heavy dose of 'if you say so'), i really really really enjoyed how much a whiny punk superboy (cape) was and how he kept accidentally exploding people and then going 'oops! yalls ruining me!!!', when the flashes came in i got a rush too i'll admit, 'wegothim'. on pure comix geeks basis i'm not as crazy about how alex l doesn't really resemble alex l in coie, though old supes seems very much the old supes of coie, esp his immediate reaction to the, um, universe. they kinda punked out on krytpo though, i get the hunch his 'still alive - see?' "yip" was last second.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Funny, but I had KINGDOM COME on my Amazon wishlist (don't ask why other than perhaps historical interest.) Perhaps I should actually read it for the first time in forever to get an understanding of what makes Johns tick...

The whole destroying toys metaphor is an elegant one. But then I thought the same thing of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW?.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 19 January 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Kingdom Come is pretty good! Mark Waid wrote it, so you shouldn't be too worried or anything.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:51 (twenty years ago)

That sentence makes no sense.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

(Okay in fairness he's done some good work, by which I mean the current Legion, but Kingdom Come is a towering pile of self-important wank)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Waid's Fantastic Four is excellent as well!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:17 (twenty years ago)

"Like Sodom & Gommorah, Bludhaven falls." Riiiiiight.

Re: IC #4 - what Blount said, esp. w/ regards to that one-page summation of Why You Spent $80 On Middling Mini-Series In 2005, Suckas, tho I was definitely rolling my eyes more. This thing's paced like a bout of diarrhea - it's just long bouts of FLOOOOOOOOOORP punctuated by moments of peace wherein GJ can work out his "buddy cop" jones - cf. that corny exchange between Bats & Wang about "the good old days." Also, that Spectre scene grossed me out (or maybe it just made me queasy because it brought a formerly unspandexed dude kicking & screaming into The Universe In Need of A Level And A Reason For Folks To Give A Shit)!

PS - that Supes 2 face on the final page was totally Perez.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Funny stuff from Superboy. "Hey now - KRUNCH - oh boy - WHUMP - I'm not evil honest - THUNK WHUDD SPLUTCH - oh hey I'm going to be Superman! I can't be bad! Where did that spleen go?" I'm glad he's out of it, though.

Vic Vetko (Vic Fluro), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:23 (twenty years ago)

I actually really liked the Spectre stuff, I thought the scene of his fingers poking out through the stithes was great horror.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, OK - I was surprised at how effective (& shocking!) that scene was, tho I was conflicted by seeing the poor guy getting dragged into this nonsense. Even if he was, um, dead & stuff.

Another plus in favor of the original Crisis: THAT was the story. The 12-issue shebang. This thing seems like some intermediary convenience that allows DC to move from whatever was into whatever will be, while explaining to bystanders (who aren't reading every dipshitty x-over to this thing) a general gist of the entire enterprise - it's like a "real-time" Marvel Saga!

(Give me five minutes, and I'll give you another awful analogy.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 05:48 (twenty years ago)

Also: a moment of recognition for Air Wave, gamely playing the role of Star Trek Ensign in the Big Whoop-Dee-Shit Space Party that seemingly happened somewhere besides the stupid-ass mini-series that's revolving around it.

ONLY TWELVE MORE DOLLARS YOU BASTARDS!!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 05:56 (twenty years ago)

hmm, liked the Spectre stuff (creepy like proper Spectre should be), thought that Red Lex's james bond exposition speech was comically bad (ditto bats and wang), liked them using Chemo as a big bomb, thought the Superboy fite was a bit shit (and didn't recognise half the dud Titan's who were smashed up) though I liked the Flash attack (tho Wally and family disappearing into a welter of special affects was also bit shit).

I still have no idea why those lot are floating around in space directing traffic.

I still want to find out what's going to happen next time!

Mark C (Markco), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah they really need to have some kind of focus, let alone payoff, on the space stuff soon.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Would someone mind explaining what happened with the Flash, and what this Kingdom Come connection is?

I'm filing this series under "highly enjoyable codswallop." I sort of read the Superboy "SPLUTCH" scene as if it was supposed to be funny -- Americans like their Monty Python, don't they? If, on the other hand, we were supposed to take it seriously -- as in, oh noe! the tragedy! etc. -- then GJ is an even bigger dork than I thought.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:47 (twenty years ago)

There is some Flash RULE that if you run really fast you disappear into a dimension of ultimate speed or some such and are never seen again.

Also, in the past Wally Flash has used the power of love, a force from above, to home in on Linda when he is lost in other dimensions - that's why he appeared before her just before he melted.

Mark C (Markco), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

What The Power Of Love? A force from above? Cleaning my soul? Flame on with desire - hold on - that's the Human Torch. Protecting from the Hooded Claw? Even worse - that's Penelope Pitstop. Universes collide. Some live some die...

Pete (Pete), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:20 (twenty years ago)

So is he actually dead?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:34 (twenty years ago)

no, he's just out of reach for as long as they say so

Mark C (Markco), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Someone told me that in Mark Waid's FF the Thing dies, goes to heaven and meets God, who is Jack Kirby. 'The House of Ideas'

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

It is true! I larffed and larffed. David R likes that story - I am too cynical to appreciate its wonder but some other bits of Waid's run were pretty good.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Would someone mind explaining ... what this Kingdom Come connection is?

In Kingdom Come, Lex Luthor brainwashes the mild-mannered, child-like Billy Batson into hating superheroes for being corrupt, and freaks him out with the idea that there's a superhero inside of him. Billy basically goes nuts. When the time comes, he makes Billy say "Shazam" and Captain Marvel goes on a rampage and ends up in battle with Superman.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Also a grey-templed Superman returns from exile in order to bring the world back to The Right Way, but oh no it turns out to be more complex than that and everyone dies.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I thought Jack Kirby as God was cute and charming! And, yeah, corny, but whatever.

TS: KirbyGod vs. Galactus eating a hot-dog.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

The whole Flash thing is going to "pay-off" when, just before the GREAT CATACLYSM that precipitates the One Year Jump, one of DC's Supergeniuses (probably Mr. T) says, "I've found away to avert the disaster. All we need are a couple of Flashes, a cosmic treadmill and OH NO, THE SPEED FORCE IS GONE! How will we traverse the New Multiverse?"

Because Johns couldn't think up a horrible disaster event that a Flash wouldn't have been able to lick. CUZ THAT'S HOW AWESOME FLASH IS (or that's how non-awesome Johns is)!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

And the Donna (Donner) Party's expedition is chronicled in Outsiders (and maybe Firestorm).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:13 (twenty years ago)

so what is going on in space then? why are they just floating around staring at stuff?

at least social services can't get her in the beyondiverse

Mrs JLI Hawkwoman died in the Wan-Thanager War. Mr JLI Hawkman died ages ago and had his branes merged with studly old school Hawkman when he came back

Mark C (Markco), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

so what is going on in space then?

I think they're headed towards the NEW centre of the Universe, where they'll undoubted have a run-in with Bald, Bespectacled Cop Spectre (will he still wear glasses, and if being the Spectre cures his nearsightedness, why not his balditude?) who will stick his hand in the right hole and make everything kosher (because Wrath of God is totally Old Testament, aka Jewish! I think Hal Jordan is Jewish, though Jim Corrigan wuz def. Catholic) again.
Along the way, they've um, had a run in with Starfire's dead-not-dead sister, and accidentally killed THE LAST THANAGARIAN MAGIC BIRD!!!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

PS, Hawkman and Hawkwoman in JLI (circa Ty Templeton fill-in issues on Apokolips) were AWESOME.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

If this Spectre ain't bald, I'm gonna be so peeved.

The JLI Hawk bunch were kinda like the Elongated Man & Ms. Dibny, weren't they? Except w/ a little more super-annuated manly maleness on the part of the XY Hawk.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's right - I'm not peeved yet! Watch out!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

JLI Hawks were almost like Mr. & Mrs. Elongated Man, except Hawkman was totally, "How can you joke at a time like this?" and then Booster Gold would be like, "Uh, have you seen what you're wearing?" and then Hawkman would be all, "That's it, I QUIT!" and Mrs. Hawkman would be like, "But honey, you can't quit now, I'm having too much fun smashing parademons in Darkseid's sewers!"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

We don't all want to read indie comics about seeing some cute girl lose her mitten on the train and then worry about whether or not to tell her and then not tell her and then be sad and horny because you lost out on the choice to talk to a cute girl oh no woe is me etc (note: satire)

Mark C (Markco), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

But really
"Day of Vengeance is a six-issue mini series written by Bill Willingham with art by Justiniano and Walden Wong. This series deals with The Spectre's quest, inspired by Eclipso, who has now merged with Jean Loring, to destroy all magic in the DC universe. The series follows a ragtag bunch of magical heroes called the Shadowpact and magic-based superhero Captain Marvel in their attempts to stop The Spectre, a quest which they fail at, although they do manage to stop Eclipso.

The series ends with The Spectre attacking and killing the Wizard Shazam, leading to the scattering of many magical artifacts, including the old Blue Beetle Scarab, throughout the world. Shazam's death also leads to a particular crisis over Gotham City when his lair, the Rock of Eternity, splits into many pieces, freeing many magical forces and threats, most notably the Seven Deadly Sins of Man.

In the one-shot special, the Shadowpact, along with numerous other fringe magic and supernatural characters, were lead by the Phantom Stranger to recollect the Seven Deadly Sins and reconstruct the Rock of Eternity. Meanwhile, Nabu, the last surviving Lord of Order, assumed control of the helmet and amulet he had given to Doctor Fate to face the Spectre in a last-ditch effort to dissuade him from his mission."
(I picked something that was published a while ago, so's not the spoil anything)

How is that anything but funny? Is there no space between B/W emo and plots that would have sounded corny-in-a-possibly-camp-and-amusing-fashion if they'd appeared in the Golden Age?

Ray (Ray), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

I might've stated this for the record, but: my interest in seeing IC (& related nonsense) through is 10% pure stubborness, 20% interest in the story, 20% affinity for characters (& some of the creators) involved, and 50% the car-crash aspect of it all (& getting to pitch bitchfits about it here).

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

you could describe any plot and make it sound ridiculous - the day of vengeance thing was actually quite good. I don't care - personally I would rather read cheesy overblown comics than most of the "quality" type comics that most people on here like

Mark C (Markco), Friday, 20 January 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

The IC stuff mostly has that annoying trait of being ridiculous and lumbering, though.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 January 2006 17:07 (twenty years ago)

well yeah, half of those miniseries were even too rub for me to be able read them in the shop

Mark C (Markco), Friday, 20 January 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

My interest in Infinite Crisis is almost entirely due to it being a huge trainwreck and I get a kick out of it. It's that, and morbid curiosity.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 20 January 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

(I pulled the Day of Vengeance synopsis straight from wikipedia, BTW, and it doesn't seem to be deliberately making fun of IC - the plot is simply silly)

Ray (Ray), Friday, 20 January 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

That's what Mark is saying - almost any spandex plot, explained matter-of-factly, is going to sound pretty silly. It's a matter of deploying said plot in an effective enjoyable manner, a trick which IC-related books (as Tom's noted) haven't managed. Except in an unintentional manner.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 January 2006 18:05 (twenty years ago)

And the one which, plot-wise, would seem to be the most, I don't know, not-overly-ridiculous, somehow managed to, I don't know, just not coagulate. Rann-Thanagar War, that is.

Genius! If they replied to a letter like that now people would have heartattacks!

(x-thought - when did continuity between titles - for a whole DC universe! - become important and was it fan or company led? And did Marvel do it first?)

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Sunday, 22 January 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm not a scholar on the subject, mind you, but I be the first wave of fans turned pros had a lot to do with it. Which would have started in the mid-sixties and picked up steam by the seventies. Not sure if Marvel was the first to do it or not. There were references to cross-title continuity in some of the SHOWCASE SUPERMAN stories, as I recall, though. I'd have to dig it out to get references, and I'm far too lazy to do that on a Sunday morning.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 22 January 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

When did the Justice League/Justice Society stuff start? That's gotta be considered crosscontinuity, right?

Paging Huk-L! Paging Huk-L!

Huk-L to the nearest white courtesy phone please!

'Cause I have no clue. JLA started in the fifties, and the JSA was the earlier incarnation of that, I think, who were relegated to an alternate earth 'cause of that whole nasty time-passing-in-real-life-but-fans-wanted-their-heroes-to-be-eternal thing.

But I bet Huk can set us all straight.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 22 January 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

I thought Gardner Fox was the one what kicked off the Earth-2 shenanigans? In the mid-late 60s? w/ the Flash?

OMG EARTH-2 TIMELINE

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I blame Roy Thomas.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Issue one of the JLA appeared in 1960 (after three try-out issues in Brave and the Bold.)

Issues 21 and 22 of the JLA featured the first team up w/ the Justice Society, DC/National's Golden Age superteam

HOWEVER, Golden and Silver Age DC characters first encountered each other in issue 123 of the Flash, published in 1961 and written by Gardner Fox, though the idea prob. came from editor Julie Schwartz. This story, 'Flash of Two Worlds', also introduced the whole Earth One and Earth Two biz.

Marvel sort've got in on the act w/ issue 4 of the Fantastic Four, cover-dated May 1962. Here the Golden Age Sub Mariner returned, although Stan and Jack (wisely in my view) didn't bother w/ any Earth 1/2 bollox. Captain America, another Marvel/Atlas Golden Age hero, also returned in issue 4 of the Avengers.

I know Roy the Boy is something of a hate figure for today's thrusting young moderns, but he really didn't have anything to do w/ DC continuity yawnfests until the early 1980s. E. Nelson Bridwell - possibly the first comics fan turned comics pro - was throughtout the 60s and 70s DC's main continuity cop.

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:17 (twenty years ago)

DC mostly didn't fool with continuity until the early '70s…that's when the fans turned pro like began to replace all the old timers who were shitcanned around that time for attempting to demand health insurance, of all things! yon old-timers were unconcerned with such things as continuity, as they had always assumed that they, in fact, were producing children's entertainment…

the fans turned pro felt as if they had to make sense of all this stuff, and fan reaction supported it, but obviously guys like Roy Thomas needed to legitimize this for their own damn selves…

I don't remember which thread I was talking about this in (there's really only ONE THREAD in ILC anway*), but I continued my re-reading of the Countdown to Inininifinite Crisisisisisis mininininis over the weekend, and Day of Vengeance was pretty good. OMAC Project as well (didn't even feel like I missed much by skipping the "Sacrifice" whatchamacallit Wonder Woman plays twisty with M.Lord's neck). Rann/Thanagar War? Stiflingly boring. Crushingly lame. The art's not so hot either. This is the guy who's taking over Green Lantern? Well, well, well. Maybe I'll drop it after all. (Though I distinctly remember once enjoying some Ivan Reis art. Perhaps in a Superman comic?)
Tonight (between voting and crying), I'll go through Villains United again, which I anticipate will also be pretty good. I seem to be coming to the conclusion that, removed from the Infinite Hype, OMAC and DoV are pretty entertaining comics.

yeah i enjoyed villains - united! a good bit - the whole thing's assemble the samurai + climactic faceoff with tragic battlefield death scences (if only that darkseid soldier dude had gone 'earn this...') + A MOLE. i kinda like seeing the villains dealing with each other alot anyhow (cf. the current jsa - classified!, that old cartoon network ad with brainiac or whoever going 'i just want some pants! just a decent pair of pants!' and solomon grundy jibberjabbering), day of vengence was alright, omac sorta eh, rann-thanagar i didn't even glance at i was so annoyed that the end of the adam strange mini got warped by tiein/leadup to it. oddly enough i think the quality is weirdly (coincidentally probably) tied into how central it is to alex (brother eyef)l's plan - villains + magix = pretty damn essential, omac + (ESP) rann-than = if you say so dude.

NewsFLASH! The team that brought you one season of The Flash on the tele is gonna bring it to you in the funny pages! Art by former Rising Stars guy / current who-dat Ken Lashley (who seems to be channeling Steve Lighte - nice)!

Also - some SUPER news! The team on the Superman (formerly Adventures of Superman) monthly serial - Kurt Busiek & Carlos Pacheco! The team that brought the world-famous Arrowsmith mini-series to 15 households worldwide! Which is a shame - it was pretty kewl stuff! Stick your "fill-in artist" comments up your Darkforce! Up up and away!

And, yes, as Shulkie has noted, you can go BATTY in your belfry when new Batman team Paul Dini & Rags "SADFACE" Morales sticks it to the Dark Knight! Prognosis on a re-appearance of the Sci-Fi Closet: NEGATIVE!

Oh wow hot 52 news with ZERO HOUR MULLET ACTION:

The first four issues [of 52] will feature art by Joe Bennett & Ruy Jose. In addition, beginning with WEEK 2, the series will include the 10-part back-up feature “The History of the DC Universe, “ written and pencilled by Dan Jurgens with inks by Art Thibert.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 January 2006 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Uh-oh.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 27 January 2006 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Fuck you!
The Jurgens/Thibert stuff on Adv. of Superman was AWESOME. Thibert's light lines brought out the best in Jurgens on issues that a) parodied (or rather, what's the sadface equivalent of parody?) the Fantastic Four (and actually gave birth to that lamoid Cyborg Superman) b) featured an unshaven Hal Jordan being rescued by Guy Gardner (and oh, yeah, Superman), c) pitted Superman against JLA robots! And I think the Time Travel stories were part of their run as well.
It's not like they got Tom Grummett or Bart Sears or something.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Dan Jurgens INVENTED Booster Gold. How's that? (though Booster was pretty lame until Giffen/DeMatteis got a hold of him--but then again, so was Batman!)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Batman used guns early on! He BECAME lame!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 January 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I hope in 52, Booster Gold uses guns. He'll be Backwards Batman. He'll be Namtab.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 27 January 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I was about to post a qualifier. Actually, I think Jurgens' AoS stuff is pretty awesome -- as is most of the early "triangle era" -- that F4 issue especially, and I even remember a great shmaltzy one where Superman gets the sadface over some drunk-driving incident in his Smallville past. And yeah, Thibert really brings the best out in Jurgens -- his pencils look pretty ugh with anyone else.

I'm not sure if this quite makes up for his horrendous JLA run, or the years of bad Superman/Doomsday spin-offs that pretty much kills DC in the mid-to-late 90s. A horrible era for comics, and he seems as responsible as anyone.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 27 January 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Chuck, I dunno if you're interested at all in the Supreme Power stuff Marvel's doing, but DJ is currently working on a mini w/ Klaus Janson as his inker, and it's the best I've seen DJ's work look since he's worked w/ Ordway (or Perez) (or Thibert).

The part that made me cringe in that Newsarama article about the new Flash is when the dudes proclaimed "we are definitely not fans of camp, we like to BELIEVE in our heroes," which sorta highlights the problem with contemporary DC Comics - it's all about denying the camp roots of the characters and overcompensating in ridiculously uptight ways.

I don't think there's only "camp DC" or "iconic DC"; characters like Batman and Superman have ranges wide enough to be envisioned in countless different ways. There should be a place for both visions; the great thing about Superman is that he can appear in something like the Donner flick and the stories featured in Showcase and still be Superman. Of course, none of this applies to Alex Ross and his idea of Superman as a bulky, pathetic old guy with no shame, wearing those lame pajamas like he's out from a cosplay contest. Which, now that I think about it, is very very funny in it's own way...

That being said, it's very sad that these guys are trying to stick just with one half. Flash, like Superman, has always benefitted from camp and weirdness to balance the drama; their absence resulting in stuff like Kingdom Come or the Geoff Johns' run.

Bruce Jones on Nightwing has potential, doesn't he?

I'm up for the Simonson/Chaykin Hawkgirl, even though I know on some level this is because I'm secretly hoping for it to be as good as Thor + American Flagg.

Brave & the Bold and Checkmate are possibilities ... Secret Six definitely, Shadowpact no despite my like of Willingham and monkeys. Robinson on Batman sounds perfect for Robinson fans, which means it's my nuclear kryptonite.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, B&B should be hott, especially if indeed GeoPrez is on every issue. Homina homina (though this title will probably take Superman/Batman's place as that title that ships so infrequently that I forgot I'm reading it).
Simonson/Chaykin on something lowprofile like Hawkgirl (which was lo-pro enuff as H-Man) should be interesting. One of the many things that confused the eff out of me in Rannagar was the H-Girl/H-Woman biz. I thought H-Girl was the re-inc/niece of H-Woman?
Checkmate, I think I will pick up the first issue and think to myself, "You chose this over Gotham Central, Rucka? DO I EVEN KNOW YOU ANYMORE?"

Rucka then outlined the characters [in Checkmate] from the cover of issue #1. The Black Queen is Sasha Bordeaux, the White Queen is Amanda Waller, Fire is the Black Queen’s knight, and the White King behind the podium is ... wait for it ... Alan Scott ...

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

And what was iffy about it (okay, the rocket Rolls was dumb, but w/o it Alfred would be DEAD!)? It was solid, if unspectacular, Batman comics. I think there needs to be a line of STATUS QUO Batman comics, where he just solves crimes and shit and doesn't go through bouts of self-examination or get his back broken or solve world hunger. Because, to me, that's my favourite part of Batman, despite his theatrics, he's not a deity like Superman or Wonder Woman, moving mountains to save humanity from threats both intra and extra terrestrial, he's a beat cop, out there every night trying to keep a lid on things.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

No one gave a shit about She-Hulk or the Doom Patrol, either, so I'm not sure that'd be the best barometer anyway. Concept-wise, the Atom and OMAC are the ones that would raise my eyebrows the most, exactly because people do give a shit -- because of all the baggage already loaded into the cargo hold.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, well, obviously. And I was talking larger picture than just those six titles (Creeper looks awesome!!!), just seems like First Issue Special all over again.
I actually think it's pretty awesome that they're calling it The All-New Atom, it's like, I don't know, The Further Adventures of Fred & Barney in Bedrock.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Mind you, between OMAC, Checkmate, US&FF and possibly a few others, we're definitely on course for JANUS DIRECTIVE 2: JANUS DIRECTIVER

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

Also of note: all but one of these are mini-series! Huk-L, you scampzilla! From Noobsarama:

The All-New Atom (ongoing, July) – writer/artist: Gail Simone/Trevor Scott

Creeper (six issues, August) – w/a: Steve Niles/Justiniano
Didio: “It’s Jack Ryder, but it’s Ryder through the eyes of Steve Niles and Justiniano. You’ve got something that really plants a new corner. Not only does it put a little air of mystery and horror into the Creeper, which I think he needs to have, but it also plays upon some of the pop culture aspects of the DC Universe, as Jack Ryder is a television personality. How does the world of heroes affect the media? That’s one of the thing that we’re going to be looking in that series.”

Martian Manhunter (eight issues, August) – w/a: A.J. Lieberman/Al Barrionuevo
Didio: “We loved the work that these guys did on Gotham Knights, and the editor Matt Idelson brought them on over. The good part about it is that it re-establishes the Martian Manhunter as one of the first and foremost characters of the DC Universe. You’ll see Martian Manhunter in a light that you’ve never seen him before. He’s not the same character who blended in with the crowd. He’s going to be his own character that can stand on his own two feet now.”

OMAC (eight issues, July) – w/a: Bruce Jones/Renato Guedes
Didio: “There are some mysteries that are still to be played out in Crisis, and OMAC, or the OMACs are such key players there, that all I can really say about this miniseries is that it’s an extension of what’s going on in Crisis.”

The Trials of Shazam! (twelve issues, July) – w/a: Judd Winick/Howard Porter
Didio: “Under penalty of death, I have to keep this story a secret, but I can say that Judd has really been able to find a voice for the character, and a direction and tone. This story plays into magic and how it works in the DC Universe, with Captain Marvel being a focal point of all that is magical in the DCU.”

Uncle Sam & The Freedom Fighters (eight issues, August) – w/a: Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray/Daniel Acuna
Didio: “This also comes out of Crisis, and in particular The Battle for Bludhaven. In some ways, Battle for Bludhaven is a prequel to a lot of things you’ll see here, and it plays with the political landscape of the DCU, and how the world addresses heroes on a government level. And of course, in regards to Checkmate, one of the things you’re going to find is that Checkmate crosses so many lines, and has their hands in so many cookie jars, that ultimately, these two groups will meet.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Didio should've used that "thru the eyes of" line for every one of these pitches.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, I didn't even read anything beyond the titles and creative teams.

In a world through the eyes...

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

“It’s Jack Ryder, but it’s Ryder through the eyes of Steve Niles and Justiniano. You’ve got something that really plants a new corner. Not only does it put a little air of mystery and horror into the Creeper, which I think he needs to have,

:-D

but it also plays upon some of the pop culture aspects of the DC Universe, as Jack Ryder is a television personality. How does the world of heroes affect the media? That’s one of the thing that we’re going to be looking in that series.”

:-/

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

Also that Martian Manhunter blurb is hilariously awful, doesn't it sort of boil down to "he sucked, but now he's gonna be awesome?" Unless that "blended in with the crowd" is meant to be taken literally, and J'onn is now gonna be all flamboyant.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

So THAT's what Manhunting is!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

And yeah, I will hold a grudge FOREVER if this MM series precludes my MM pitch where he basically walks away from the superhero life and tries to, y'know, do small good. It's call RANDOM ACTS OF MANHUNTING. Or HIGHWAY TO H'RONMEER.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

The OMAC and USFF stories really do have a bad smell to them. It's The Atom that oughta bug me more -- I just think it's too soon to hop on that horse -- but I guess I cut Gail Simore more slack, and since it's an ongoing, it sounds less like an obvious attempt to scoop up the ranch dip of sales with the corn chip of Crisis leftovers.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

It's The Atom would be an even better name for the series.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

With a ! It's The Atom! It would need a jingle, though. It's the Atom, up an' at 'em, we're gonna fight some crime. Is Jean still crazy? Reply is hazy, says the 8-ball at this time.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

Is Jean still trapped in the sun?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

I have no idea, but I'm pretty sure I read the comics that have the answer. See, this is what I mean, it's too soon. An Atom comic should wait until it can be something other than an OMG My Wife's Eclipso comic, without something other than an OMG My Wife's Eclipso comic seeming weirdly mistimed and inappropriate.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

"Honey, why is my toast always burnt?"
"Because I'm trapped in the sun, love!"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, yeah, it totally depends on what they mean by "All-New". Is it going to be an all-new comic starring the all-old Atom? or is it going to be an all-new comic featuring a teenager who stumbles upon Ray Palmer's white dwarf belt and suddenly finds themselves THRUST into a world of superheroicking beyond their imagination?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Every episode could revolve around The Atom!'s comical misadventures trying to get Jean out of the sun (and unEclipsoed?) while playing the "hey my wife went nuts and is in the sun" pity card to score with celebrity guest-stars (i.e. Fire, Ice, Artemis).

Oh, a non-Ray Atom didn't even occur to me. That could be all right. At least, it wouldn't have the same baggage.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

ILC in not reading fine print shocka:
“Something like The All-New Atom,” Didio said, “I would take that title very literally. For those people who are looking for Ray Palmer, we’re not going to be seeing him anytime soon.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

OMG he's invisible now!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

And more fine print devastation: Look for more later today from Didio on Andy and Adam Kubert on Batman and Action, respectively, and tomorrow on Wonder Woman.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

Forget widescreen comics and hologram covers! Genius 2006 innovation: It's The Atom!, drawn ACTUAL SIZE!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Fun Fact: the ginchy design of Robo-Sasha was done by Cliff Richards, AKA he who stunk up the joint in about 1/4th of The OMAC Project AKA he who made the last 3 months of Wonder Woman such a joyless chore to read.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

I am now campaigning for David Palmer to become the new Atom!.

David Palmer, he dead.

David Palmer
Dark Phoenix

"OK, an' hex Mr. David Palmer" is an anagram of "M. Valdemar, Dark Phoenix," and M. Valdemar of course is Poe's hypnotized-into-a-zombie character (and my livejournal!)

Steve Niles on nu-Creeper: http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=6754

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Man, after Infinite Crisis ends, the only DCU books on my pull list are going to be Seven Soldiers, 52, and LOSH. And Morrison's Batman, but that's not until the end of the year, right? Between that, dropping the mainstream Marvel books, and only reading two X-books, am I going to lose my spot in the ILCapes brigade?

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

If that mountain falls on me, it's gonna fall on you too!
I've got some deep cuts planned. SO LONG: Teen Titans, GL, GA, maybe Detective, maybe pre-Morrison Batman, JLA:C (at least for the Englehart JLDetroit story). That leaves, um...52, maybe Checkmate. Maybe I'll take a look at Meltzer Justice League of Crying Hoboes, because ILC will need some ROGGLES during the summer. Blue Beetle actually looks sorta interesting, as does Creeper, and maybe a few other minis. So I think my scales might tip toward Marvel for the first time EVER! (oh wait, Marvel Zombies is just a mini) (But I feel more confidant that I will continue to read Capt. Am, She-Hulk and Daredevil than anything by DC).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Creeper does look interesting, just not "I'm going to get this instead of She-Hulk" interesting -- I'll read a friend's copy. I think once Seven Soldiers ends, I'm evenly split between DC/Vertigo/Marvel ... although maybe 52's alleged weekliness gives DC the edge. Plus the Vertigo factor.

Still, it's gonna be a weird summer! Maybe there'll be a Titans East/Titans West baseball game annual crossover.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, the Birds of Prey OYL preview looks cool. Good art. Some guy in star-shaped specs.

Batman returns to 1984!!!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Though can't complain about Jim Gordon.
I hope that the reason Batman, Superman & Wonder Woman haven't been around for a year is that at the end of Infinite Crisis they all broke each other's back.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

I'm the only who cares anymore, amn't I?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

I was gonna say, it's weird how overwhelmingly lukewarm I am on the OYL stuff. That's kind of a good thing, though, in the long run -- if all this Infinite Crisis Rannavengence Warnited stuff was to set up a Big Flashy Shocking Status Quo (Dead Superman Azrael Artemis), it wouldn't last. The fact that so little of what they're unrolling is headline-worthy is promising.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

There are some of the OYL's I'm actually really psyched for: Hawkgirl (Chaykin! Simonson! What's not to like!), the Morrison/Kubert Batman (although that doesn't hit until July), Supergirl & the Legion of Super-Heroes (saw a preview of the next issue at New York Comic-Con, and yes, the twist is very impressive), Manhunter (which I've been gradually warming to). Also glad to see that they're letting some exhausted franchises take at least a few months off.

And, like I said, I'm ridiculously excited about 52.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Morrison Batman yeah -- although it's the creator I'm interested in there, not the new status quo. LOSH definitely, but I'm not sure I'm more interested in it than I have been in the title already.

Oddly, 52 is on my pull list -- the only modern-day DCU title on it -- so it's not that I have no investment in things, and I don't think it sounds terrible. The new DCU just isn't exciting me yet. But that's okay, it has time.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

Huk, I expect a full report on the nu-Detective ASAP.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently the OYL twist in Manhunter is that she is now a Martian... (SOOOO CLEVER!)

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't it that SHE'S ACTUALLY FROM EARTH-8???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

The Snoozarama previews of 52 have a great page of Elongated Man trying to shoot himself in the gob, Cobain style. But surely the bullet would just bounce around inside!

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

That's actually his new special attack. It's a glue bullet, it bounces off him and sticks to you.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Huk, I expect a full report on the nu-Detective ASAP.

Don't hold yr breath. Snow storms might ruin yet another CRISIS week.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Detective was pretty good, speaking as a non-Robinson-fan, although I'm glad he's not permanent. The villain death at the start is literally playing to ILC. And it seems like such a "duh" to put Commish Gordon back in the lead, I don't understand why it took this long. Promising.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)
