REPRINTED FROM MY blog:

-THIS WEEK'S PULL LIST:
All-Star Superman #4 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely - Jimmy Olsen gets a psychedelic coat! I want a psychedelic coat too! But more like Shade, the Changing Man!
Astonishing X-Men #15 by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday - Where Cassandra Nova makes fun of Beast for still being blue. But, hey screw you, Cassandra, he hasn't yet devolved into a worm!
52 #7 by Oh Dear Lord I'm Not Typing In All Those Names and probably Joe Bennett - Which promises to mix storytelling audacity with characters who'll probably frown the entire time while wearing, in hi-larious contrast, gaudy outfits! Oh, and maybe Booster Gold'll die.
Casanova #1 by Matt Fraction and Gabriel Ba - Which may also involve a psychedelic coat!
Can't Get No by Rich Veitch (released last week) - Even though it doesn't involve Swamp Thing meeting Jesus Christ, I might get this!

Anyting else of note?

ALL STAR SUPERMAN #4
EX MACHINA #21

ASTONISHING X-MEN #15
NEW AVENGERS #20
ULTIMATES 2 #11

Pretty solid week. I haven't got Eternals, 52 and Flash on my pull list, but I'll probably pick them up, too.

Oblivious Lad. (Oblivious Lad), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

For me:

52 WEEK 7--oh, man, enjoying this series almost as much as I'd hoped
ALL-STAR SUPERMAN #4--two Morrison comics in one week, and if goddamn 7S had come out it'd have been three
BIRDS OF PREY #95--I'm liking this storyline a lot too
FLASH THE FASTEST MAN ALIVE #1--okay, let's see how this goes
MEGATOKYO VOL. 4--curious what all the buzz is about
ETERNALS #1--as much as I hated 1602, I can't give up on Gaiman
GIANT SIZE HULK #1--this looks like BIG GREEN FUN!
NEW AVENGERS #20--gee, what do we think is going to happen?
ULTIMATES 2 #11--I actually don't KNOW what's going to happen in Millar's "Avengers"
I LOVE LED ZEPPELIN SC--bought this already at MoCCA and really enjoyed it--Ellen Forney's "how-to" comics
MOME VOL. 4--got it already, mostly notable for another amazing David B. story

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

"MOME VOL. 4--got it already, mostly notable for another amazing David B. story"

Damn, now I gotta buy that...

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Hold up, what's Giant Size Hulk? Is this Planet Hulk supplement, or stand-alone?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

THEY DIDN'T SAY GIANT-SIZED HUK

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of detest Megatokyo.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

why the fuck aren't they bringing out an Essential Eternals to tie-in w/ the Gaiman shit? pre-Slott She-Hulk, who in their right minds wants a collection of that (ditto tony isabella's Champions)??

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

They're bringing out a high-priced version of the Kirbyternals to tie in w/ the Gaiman shit, that's why.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 June 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

I can't seem to resist anything with Essential on it... but will this finally make me say NO!! NOOOO!!

Previously only X-FACTOR and WOLVERINE have had that power. I even bought SPIDER-WOMAN and WEREWOLF BY NIGHT.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Monday, 19 June 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Dear God Vic!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 June 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

HOLY SHIT! Ultimates, Astonishing X-Men, Showcase Superman Vol 2 and All Star Superman all in one ship? THIS IS ONE MAGICAL SOLSTICE!

Also: 52, Uncanny X-Men. Less exciting.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Monday, 19 June 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

SHOWCASE PRESENTS SUPERMAN VOL 2 TP $16.99

: (

PS: WHERE'S RUNAWAYS? c("c) WANT RUNAWAYS!

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 19 June 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

I don't get it, why are people talking about Booster Gold dying? This is the second thread in a week.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 07:00 (nineteen years ago)

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT - great great Mike Ploog artwork, occasionally interesting/early attempt at first person narration, degenerate 70s vibe, some issues written by man named Wolfman

SPIDERWOMAN - pretty good Infantino artwork, Claremont+Fleischer scripts that aren't total hackery, some issues written by man named Wolfman

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

Is "written by a man named Wolfman" actually a recommendation? I only know him from Crisis, which is how you say terrible.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 08:20 (nineteen years ago)

52 WEEK #7
ALL STAR SUPERMAN #4
EX MACHINA #21
FLASH THE FASTEST MAN ALIVE #1
HELLBLAZER #221
SWAMP THING #28
ETERNALS #1
GIANT SIZE HULK #1
IRON MAN #9
ULTIMATES 2 #11

Maybe.

I got Show Case presents last week - I'm a third of the way through and there's nothing yet to rival the genius of SUPERMAN TURNS INTO A LION.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew - it just amuses me that a Werewolf comic was written by a man called Wolfman. Soz. Ppl used to think v. highly of Marv's Tomb of Drac run, but gorgeous Colan/Palmer artwork aside, they haven't aged terribly well - ditto Teen Titans and Crisis, which also have the added handicap of George ('can't really draw so I'll add some more rubble/noodling') Perez 'art'. Generally, I wld say that Wolfman = better than Bill Mantlo or Len Wein or Gerry Conway in terms of 70s Marvel hacks, but no more than that.

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

WTF, Ward? Perez certainly has flaws, but the dude is a competent draftsman if nothing else.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

I read Megatokyo when it was merely a webcomic, and while it was funny a bit, the funny part of the once-duo has left, leaving the navel-gazing, self-hating, kind of fanboy who thinks he should move to Japan based on anime in charge.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

EX MACHINA #21
CASANOVA #1 I loved Rex Mantooth, remained solidly on the fence for Last of the Independents, and so hope this is a return to Fraction form (i.e., insanity)
ASTONISHING X-MEN #15 - I don't think Whedon deserves the Eisner for Best New Continuing Series for this, yet I keep buying it.
X-MEN FAIRY TALES #2
WARREN ELLIS BLACK GAS AUXILIARY ED #2 Finally! The cover zombie in the schoolgirl skirt is me. Er, based on me. Really! Buy ten.

Madolan, Tuesday, 20 June 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Booster Gold is going to fake his death and become Rip Hunter, GeoJo the Po-Faced Boy has been setting this up since JSA #72. OR DID YOU NEVER NOTICE THAT THEY BOTH HAVE BLOND HAIR PARTED TO THE RIGHT?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

WARREN ELLIS BLACK GAS AUXILIARY ED #2

OMG HOW DID I MISS THIS ON THE FIRST READ-THROUGH.

I haven't read Astonishing X-Men at ALL. Is it really that good? I love Firefly, but regard my youthful obsession with Buffy with a cringing embarrassment.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

you got it all wrong kiddo

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Jessie, I think you have that all backwards!

Astonishing X-Men is quite good, especially the current storyline.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that's fucked up.

Huk, I actually noticed a character who looks IDENTICAL to Booster in the first Showcase Teen Titans - he's the soviet superhero, er, Starfire!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

I mean don't get me wrong, Firefly is fantastic, but feeling embarrassed about loving a vampire highschool melodrama but not a space western is sort of missing the point.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

SEND IN THE CLONES!

see also, Animal Man, Steve Rogers, Steve Trevor & Cosmic Boy (dye-job)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

> I love Firefly

Not me, but I'm a big Deadwood fan. Does Miss Isringhausen take off her top in "Serenity"?

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Jessie - ASTONISHING is can be quite good w/ reservations - mainly the first arc was excellent, the second arc had moments (the broken sentinel scene may be one of my fave moments ever) but was on the whole rather dissatisfying. The current arc began iffy, but the last issue may be one of Whedon's best (he really just nails Cyclops, both in terms of character and crucifixion).

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

You guys don't seem to understand HOW MUCH I loved it. It's more the heights of fangirldom and not the actual show that has caused most of my embarrassment, I'm sure (I literally haven't seen an episode since I was about 13, so I have no idea on its quality as a program).

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

Dear Buffy Summers,

You rock. You are my favorite superhero even though you don't typically have your dialogue in word ballons or break the sound barrier on a daily basis.

Your fan,

Richard Baez (age 25)

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

are you guys trying to lure Tep out of his lurkdom?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

I've been out of town for two weeks, and now I'm afraid to return to the comic book store. I've got no idea how much money they'll be sucking out of me.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm getting sucked out of a C-note plus this bi-week. I blame Rick Veitch.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

Next week, we should just list the prices of the comics we're getting and work backwards to try to figure out who's getting what!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

all star supes
52
captain america
gigantic sized hulkamaniac
i. ron, man
ultimates
astonishing x-mang

maybe the new flash series?

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

HOLY SHIT $100+ ON COMIC BOOKS????????? Really?????

And to think I feel bad when I spend $20!

(Firefly >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Buffy in pretty much every way imaginable, from premise up through acting and production values.)

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

Well, to be fair, it's actually $50 / week. And it's my one true vice. Aside from online gambling. And the occasional CD binge. And hookers. And cock fighting. And knifing hobos.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

At least you're not losing money on the hobos.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

have you guys seen that movie COCKFIGHTER?
great film. about this cockfighter who takes a vow of silence until he regains the cockfighter of the year award.

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

GUESS WHAT MOVIE JUST WENT INTO MY NETFLIX QUEUE

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

Papillon?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Warren Oates is brilliant in Cockfighter. Get it with Two Lane Blacktop and have yourself a Hellmanfest.

not that this is the place for it, firefly doesn't hold a candle to buffy. not even a teeny-tiny little miniature candle.

(esp the zzzzzzz actors)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

TAKE IT TO ILE NERDS

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

You people are certifiable (and always have been). Everyone on Firefly kicked ass and only Willow and occasionally Xander kicked ass on Buffy. (Cordelia and Niles were especially heinous and I never really understood why anyone liked Spike.) Also, every show with GINA TORRES in it is automatically better than any show without her.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

BOO

SUPERHUGGLEZ

And to think - I almost attempted to broker piece by posting my comic invoice for this coming Thursday.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

There's a new route to go - in lieu of all the sadness that currently premeates the superhero landscape, writers should aspire to the domestic melodrama. But, y'know w/ tights.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, I have to fuck up the back-to-comix vibe for a second:

So Dan, will you be watching the new Fox show with Ron Livingston and GINA TORRES as hostage negotiators or something?

FUCK YES, ARE YOU KIDDING??????

(okay, back to comix)

Ultimates was also really good. But is that a shock? Ultimates 2 is the masterpiece that is going to dog Millar for the rest of his career.

sheep sheet (serious sheet), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

The more I read The Ultimates (which is grebt), and the more I read other Millarness (which is often not-so-grebt), I wonder how much of The Ultimates is Bryan Hitch, & how much is MM.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's plenty Millar - his voice is pretty thick on it, actually. I just think it's a matter of him being paired with a perfect collaborator, and given a project that allows him to say exactly what he wants to say with the characters he enjoys the most. The problem now is that I don't think Millar has much else to say - The Authority seemed like a rough draft for this, and Civil War is part editorial mandate and part self-parody.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

david i know we're never going to agree on this but there is little or no diff in quality btwnn ultimates and the romita jr wolverine run imho blahdiblah - i mean it took a LONG time for Hitch (and JR JR) to get really gd, and i def think the widescreen Ultimates scripting has brought out the best in Hitch (works both ways obv cos knowing you've got an ace artist on board who can draw super-panoramic stuff must be v. inspiring)

but then i'm in a total minority on ILC cos I think Millar>>>Morrison - REALLY don't understand why Millar inspires such fear and loathing, he seems TOTALLY in the tradition from Roy Thomas on, whereas Morrison always seems much more OUTSIDE the tradition for better/worse - according to taste i guess

x-post w/ matthew

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Millar, Morrison and Ellis are all about equal in my eyes, with Millar slightly below the other 2. (Joe Kelly was up there for a while, esp. when he was writing Deadpool and X-Men, but I didn't really like his non-X stuff.)

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Flipping through the new Flash book, I have to say that it was about the most spectacularly unappealing-looking first issue of an ongoing series that I've seen in a loooooong time. The art was butt ugly and it didn't look like anything the slightest bit interesting happened. Maybe it reads better than it scans, but I did spy the word "dawg", so I'm doubting it.

Am I voicing surprise here? If so, I'm not sure why.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

OK I BOUGHT TOM STRONG V2 AND WHITEOUT BY GREG RUCKA ROLL.

and now i am sorta cursing myself for not getting any ASS at the comic book store

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure I'd curse myself if I did get any ass at the comic book store. And scrub myself with a wire brush until all of my skin came off.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

are you saying comic book girls are uggos?

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

Ooooohhhhhh!

From my own personal experience, gals in comic book stores tend to be rather cute. Take that, stereotypical presumption held by the masses!

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

No, no, no. Sorry to misrepresent. I was thinking solely about the quasi-autistic guys with the patented Zone of Stink about them. Which is who I'm used to seeing, as I usually only stop in on wednesday afternoons (the nerd rush). But you're right: I've seen lots of cute girls in there from time to time. Probably will do so more often once I'm in the Big City.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

huk did you ever get tom thong v1?

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

Deric, in New York City (and Chicago too, from what I remember), most of the comic shops have really cute girls as clerks! It's part of their wicked scheme to get lonely dudes to keep coming back in the hope that one day Suicide Girl #798444087 will suddenly love them for buying that Alison Blechdel book along with the new issue of 52 and Nightwing.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

i am friends with several attractive comic shop girls!

Suicide Girls don't even know how to read.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 22 June 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

Astonishing X-Men was astonishingly boring.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

the shop I frequent is also staffed by ladies. their cuteness is debatable, howsoever.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

Emma Frost following through on Xavier's threat from the first movie was far more entertaining than the indepth look into the world's most boring man last month.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

Lady workers definitely make the comic shop experience more palatable, attractiveness be damned. I hit a store in Dalton, Georgia, last week that had a stereotypical comic store dude at the counter. He was some big hairy rotund fella wearing a Frazetta babe tee, deeply engrossed in a conversation about on-line AD&D (or whatever) with two middle-age accountant looking guys who were eating lunch at a table in the middle of the store. There was a third guy at the table who was easily 60 and seemed the most intensely passionate about on-line gaming. It's this kind of stuff that always made me feel kinda embarrassed and uncomfortable.

Still, I fully recommend the Fantasy Factory to any comics fan who winds up in downtown Dalton. They have a full collection of DC Archives hardcovers, and I was able to find Defenders Annual #1 for three bucks less than anywhere in Boston. Easily the only shop of note in that town, excluding Pitty Pat Junction.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Last month's Astonishing was great because its entire these was "Scott Summers, all the way down in the core of your being, you know you suck ass". This week was the prerequisite "OH NOES THE BADDIES BEAT THE HEROES except for one feisty, plucky member who will RALLY THEM TO VICTORY next issue" issue. The stuff with Beast and Wolverine was mildly cute I guess but I was more entertained by the panels featuring the two students than I was by anything else in the book; my overall reaction was feeling annoyed that I waited a month for something so pedestrian.

Basically this issue made me realize that I no longer give a shit about Kitty Pride, something the 12-year-old me wouldn't have thought was possible.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Scott is the best X-Man!

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Thursday, 22 June 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just kinda shocked by you guys. I mean, yeah, part of the appeal of Scott is that he's a total fuck up, but that's kinda what all of the X-Men should be.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Thursday, 22 June 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

WTF no he isn't! He never has been! The only time he was even halfway interesting was when he was fucking over Maddie and driving her and Jean insane with his own mounting insanity (fueled by Cameron Hodge, which is why he's secretly my favorite X-related villain).

Scott Summers is a boring shit.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

All of the original X-Men were caricatures when they first started (the most egregious being Jean, "Hi! I'm the girl!") but as time has gone on they've all grown into something more... except for Scott. Everytime they do something interesting with him, the next writer comes in and basically says "No, he's the boring leader [RESET BUTTON] and we're right back at the weedy kid who has no distinguishable traits beyond a fucked-up visor.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

I don't get why somebody would read the X-Men if they can't stand Cyclops. He's one of the two or three characters absolutely essential to that book.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 22 June 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

The entire point of the X-Men (IMO) is that NONE of the characters are absolutely essential. You can have a credible X-Men line-up without Scott, Jean, Hank, Bobby, Warren, Kurt, Logan or Ororo. There are so many options to choose from (or at least there were before Marvel editorial decided to shove their heads up their asses), it's fantastic.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

Emma Frost following through on Xavier's threat from the first movie

?

I thought Astonishing was alright but not nearly as good as last month.

Superman/Batman #27: Oh, Kevin Maguire, how you love crotch shots! Goofy done-in-one featuring: Supertransgenderism! The Ultra-Humanite! Pursed lips and 4 other facial expressions! SPOILER/itwasaladream/ENDSPOILER Not enough to tell if Verheiden is C or D yet, but he at least isn't shy of the Po-Face, and come to think of it, this story is v. reminiscent of Bob Haney, and not so much innerturmoil (though, um, I guess there's some, but it's almost comically literal) interior monologue that weighed down Loeb's flighty Grandeur of Goofiness. B+
Captain America #19: Radically Advanced Ideas in Destruction! Marvel has a Lady Flash--AND SHE'S BRITISH--AND AS OLD AS CAP??? Steve Epting really, really kicks ass here, though I think I would dislike him on most other superhero titles. He's kinda like Van Sciver w/ a sense of proportion.
ALL-NEW SUPERFAST FLASH-DAWG FIRST ISSUE SPECTACULAR WUNDERBAR #1: Kid Flash is a scab, Old Flash is an old man, and Barry Allen is a disembodied voice. The writers have apparently seen the Spider-Man movies and aren't afraid to let the world know. The art has some moments, but not many. D
52 #7: NOT ONE DONNA TROY SPACEBUTT SHOT. YOU'RE DEAD TO ME JERGENS! C-
Showcase Presents Superman Vol. 2: WHY DO I BUY ANYTHING ELSE??? A+++

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

"The entire point of the X-Men (IMO) is that NONE of the characters are absolutely essential."

Hypothetically, yes. However, one could argue that at its creative peaks (Claremont, long stretches of Morrison's run), character development and interaction (and hence, a reasonably stable, long-running group of characters) are the book's defining traits. A real book predicated upon the "inessentialness of any single character" you describe would, I suspect, more resemble SUICIDE SQUAD or X-STATIX (both of which revelled in an idiosyncrasy which I don't think has ever defined the more traditional x-books).

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

"this story is v. reminiscent of Bob Haney"

Now there's a recommendation!

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

See the thing is, I think you need to have been reading for as long as Dan or Matthew to be emotionally invested in peeling the layers of the Scott Summers onion one way or the other.

Jordan:

Professor X: Logan, my tolerance for your smoking in the mansion notwithstanding, continue smoking that in here, and you'll spend the rest of your days under the belief that you're a six-year-old girl.
Wolverine: You'd do that?
Professor X: I'd have Jean braid your hair.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

X-Statix is completely dependant on the presence of Edie, Guy and Tike, though!

I will backpedal on my statement somewhat; the X-Men would feel slightly off if at least one of the characters I listed didn't appear in the book (and I should have added Rogue and Gambit to that list) but there isn't any one of them who is absolutely essential unless you work in marketing (in which case it's Wolverine, not Cyclops).

Anyway, my main point was really that because of the way he's been written, Scott Summers is completely boring unless he's either doing something terrible to someone or having something terrible done to him; the rest of the time he's all "X-Men, attack! Wolverine, stop being a loose cannon! Bobby, get serious! Warren, stop having so much money! Hank, explain genetics to me! Jean, I LUV U!!!!!! Alex, you're my brother! Ororo, stop stealing my job and being all threatening and lesbiany! Everyone else, I don't actually give a shit about you so I won't really interact with you unless we're in combat or the Danger Room!"

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

(Ha, I forgot "Kitty/Jubilee, stop being interchangeable jailbait for Logan!")

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

the 'interchangeable team' biz is an old old marvel trope that goes back at least as far as Avengers 16 (THE OLD ORDER CHANGETH) - a cheap and easy way of saying this isn't yr dad's superhero team bk (ie the seemingly unchanging justice league)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking of The Avengers as I was writing that and how I always liked characters like Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) more than Captain America and Iron Man.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Morrison had a pretty great take on Scott, which is that he comes off as so boring/normal that he can pass as scary-inscrutable.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

Dan: lol
Douglas: OTM

Professor X: I'd have Jean braid your hair.

I think you need to have been reading for as long as Dan or Matthew to be emotionally invested in peeling the layers of the Scott Summers onion one way or the other.

No! No, absolutely not. All you have to do is read New X-Men, and then Astonishing X-Men, and there you go.

"Everyone else, I don't actually give a shit about you so I won't really interact with you unless we're in combat or the Danger Room!"

I think this is a fairly realistic trait for Scott to have!

And this is pretty much all the X-Men worth reading since like 1988 or so, isn't it?

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Right now the best X-book being published is X-Factor.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, X-Factor's great. It was great when David was on it 15 years ago, too. I don't consider X-Factor or X-Statix to be X-men series, though.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

I never really was into David's original X-Men run. I think it's because I think Alex Summers as group leader is a really awful idea.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

Morrison is a class above Millar or Ellis for me. Theres more imagination and invention in a single issue of AllStar Superman than in the entirety of both Series of the Ultimates. And I get the feeling that if he really wanted to, Morrison could do something just like the Ultimates, just as well.

But I love the Ultimates. Its all been done before in other series or movies, but Millar and Hitch do it so well its exhilarating. It just makes me giggle with fanboy glee every issue.

David N (David N.), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah - I'm also inclined toward the "dumb fun" of the Ultimates. 'S like drinkin' a liter of Coca-Cola in fifteen minutes, it is. You feel guilty and have a tummy ache afterwards, but still - Hawkeye kills people with fingernails!!!

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

MORRISON CAN DO ANYTHING. HE IS MAJIK!!!

¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ¨ˆ (chaki), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Probably 99% of anything interesting that's ever been done with Cyclops has been done since Morrison started writing NXM. Before that, he was mostly just a nondescript douche (excluding some of the Jean/Maddie subtext).

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Although I love Morrison's work, I don't think he can do anything, and I really doubt he coud really pull off something like The Ultimates. It's a really polished and slick genre piece. Morrison is too ADD to do something so focused. I love his ADD digressions, but they're at odds with what Millar does in The Ultimates.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

But he can do focused, slick storytelling. He did it earlier in his career on Zenith and on His Legends of the Dark Knight story (Gothic?). Even in his Judge Dredd run. But now, he gets paid to do Grant Morrison, which he obviously likes to do, too.

Grant Morrison, generally = ADD digressions.

And didn't he write some issues of the last Millar storyline on Authority (which, as Matthew points out above, is very similar to this Ultimates story), leading to their falling out for a while? If I remember correctly, he did an immaculate job at being Millar..

David N (David N.), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

I would be more impressed with Morrison if he actually did something with all 8 million ideas he flings out in his stories as opposed to blurting out all over the page and then ignoring half of what he just said to focus on plot points (this is why I thought We3 was so awesome).

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, maybe he does have the ability to focus and I just haven't seen it. I still have yet to read We3 or Zenith. His LOTDK story was kind of dire, though, so I don't know that I'd use that as an example of him doing anything particularly well.

If I knew what parts of his collaborative efforts (Flash, 52, etc.) were all Morrison, that might help me a little in judging his ability in this arena, as those works tend to be a little tighter. I currently suspect that his collaborators (Millar, Waid, Archie Bell) are responsible for the tightening up.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I kinda loathed 'Gothic', the LOTDK story.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

Archie Bell

Bravo, sir.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

All Star Superman was...well...just awesome. I can't believe he made Jimmy Olsen cool. I mean...Jimmy Olsen was born to be cool!!, he's the reader's point of view, he's Superman's best friend and he goes on all these crazy adventures. Well, for the longest time he seemed like a square, but here Morrison distills everything great about him and brings him to the fore without ever making him anything else than "superman's pal".

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Thursday, 22 June 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Gothic did sort of suck. But I couldn't really think of anything else to back up my point, which suggests it wasn't the best point in the first place.

But We3 - of course...

David N (David N.), Thursday, 22 June 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

Doom Patrol seems like the most ADD comic he did! I think he's perfectly capable of doing straight, perfectly streamlined plot (see E is for Exctinction), it just bores him (see Animal Man). I think he would feel like he wasn't doing his job if he tuned down the number of ideas and would probably see developing his ideas as a cop-out.

OH GOD ASS IS GOOD

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 23 June 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

No! No, absolutely not. All you have to do is read New X-Men, and then Astonishing X-Men, and there you go.

No see, that's exactly what I did, and that's all you need to understand what's happening, I'm just saying that you need another 20 years service before you give a shit about him, is all.

I don't think that Morrison investigating what he means by all his throwaway ideas would improve his work at all. I can't see how it would, apart from completely losing the plot.

I do agree that he can't do just anything. Though I think sometimes that Alan Moore can.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 23 June 2006 07:02 (nineteen years ago)

Also ASS is compeletly fantastic, to the point where I'd almost quit comics when it ends.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 23 June 2006 07:05 (nineteen years ago)

I think a problem with Grant Morrison now is that he believes his hype a bit too much, and so he feels like he has to be this Mad Idea Machine, and that's his brand. I don't think he could do something like Ultimates 2 if he tried - he's not that good with structure, for one thing. Ultimates 2 is pretty conventional, but it is also refined and knows exactly how to push the readers' buttons. I feel like Morrison is too wrapped in himself to be working almost entirely in the service of the audience's satisfaction, as Millar does.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Friday, 23 June 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

Well, as Dan pointed out, he can do simple stories, eg We3. He just doesn't, often. I admit I see The Ultimates as 'less' than most of Morrison's work, but that's because I can see, for most of the stuff he writes, how it could still be a really good story if he dropped the extra elements. Some of them, eg The Filth & The Invisibles, are complicated by design.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 23 June 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

You know, I would think that a far better example of Grant Morrison doing a simple story would be Kill Yr Boyfriend, since that's y'know, probably the best thing the man's ever done aside from the final issues of Doom Patrol and Animal Man.

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Friday, 23 June 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

(My point re: the million ideas was very oblique; it was meant to be "stop doing that unless you're going to do something with it, and since it's practically impossible to do anything with it, STOP DOING IT because the stories I've read where you don't do that are an order of magnitude better".)

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 June 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

I think you (Matt and Dan) have shifted from "I prefer" to "is better", which is a shame because you're both wrong :)

Morrison is someone who pushes all my comics-reading buttons -affected affection, millions of ideas, engagement with pop culture, really nice and fitting (tho of course not neccesarily neat) endings. I like when he drops various aspects of this in and out of the mix, like he's been doing with the miniseries, I really like it when he turns all of them on at the same time - there's basically nothing by him that I haven't enjoyed. But the ideas are basially another switch which is on or off in his comics - they don't have to serve or obscure the rest of the story, they're an end in and of themselves.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 23 June 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

My other point re: Morrison would be "WTF were you thinking with Mr. Miracle???????"

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 June 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone else think Jimmy Olsen in bra is a nod to Miller's Vicky Vale in underwear?

No idea if there's a dedicated assy new Flash thread, but this is the best I can find. So tv guys are done after issue 8, according to Newsarama, and new fella Guggenheim apparently thinks he's some kinda comedian or something: "I've been made privy to some of DC's long-term plans -- and from Infinite Crisis, we all know how long-term these guys think".
