DC: The New Frontier (Spoilers OK)

Am I the only one reading this?
And, really, I'm not "reading" this so much as I just finally read it. My local shop sold out of #1 before I got one, and then I bough #2 when it came out, but decided to hold off until I could read the whole thing. Then a few weeks ago, my local comic shop owner was all like "You're not reading this? YOU???"
So he got the issues all in and I bought 'em on Thursday, and Holy Hannah! That's some insano goodness.
I think #2 is still my favourite, with the Martian Manhunter watching TV and morphing into Groucho and Bugs Bunny and the Flash in Vegas vs. Captain Cold!
But I also love the non-spandex stuff, which I know very little about.

Huck, Monday, 23 August 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I DON'T HAVE #2!!!!!!

But, yeah, it's fantastic - I really hope all the jackanapes (& level-headed folk) giving DC a rash of shit for _Identity Crisis_ are reading _TNF_, if they're looking for a creator to respect the DC heroes & their daunting legacy.

And you're right on re: the non-spandex stuff - all the shenanigans w/ the Suicide Squad & the Challengers of the Unknown, & especially that first chapter, is (appropriately) fantastic. Also, I'm partial to John Jones more than the Martian Manhunter.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always loved the concept of John Jones, but I've never seen it played out to its potential. This comes close. Esp. in #2. Just, as this alien walking amongst us, secretly using his powers to protect the innocent, or less-guilty. Everybody always wants to play up his big muscles and Supermanisms. In my imagination, he's always been the perfect medium between Superman and Batman.

Huck, Monday, 23 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

NEW FRONTIER is probably the best thing to come out this year, and I don't see too much trumping it at this point. Jim Lee on SUPERMAN? Bosh. IDENTITY CRISIS? Puh-leeze. NEW FRONTIER just doesn't get talked up as much because it's not "edgy" and "dangerous," but in both scale and execution, it's blowing the competition away.

Can't wait for the ending and the inevitable hardcover (and if my little fanboy prayers were answered, it'd be oversized.)

Glad you joined the party, Huck. I find it unimaginable that someone with your tastes wasn't partaking of the wonder...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the big minus re: _New Frontier_'s lack of press is the project's modesty. Sure, it's HUGE in terms of the ground covered and bridged and all the threads it ties together and the scope of the story, but it's presented in a refreshingly matter-of-fact manner, from Cooke's deceptively simple iconographic art (which is faboo) to him sticking (for the most part) with the same panel layout on every page - 3 page-width panels, equally sized. It's an appropriate choice, actually - it imparts each moment (hell, each CHARACTER) with the same importance, and Cooke's nimble juggling of the cast of characters exemplifies this implied equality. Also, the 3-panel layout seems to be a neat li'l way to combine the traditional 6-panel page with the modern "widescreen" approach folks like Bryan Hitch & Trevor Hairsine are taking to town.

I would love for well-crafted, lunchpail projects / series like _TNF_(or, for lack of a better example, _Queen & Country_) (OR F*CKING _SLEEPER_!) rec'd the word-of-mouth and red-carpetry that high-profile Wizard-approved ultra-mega-projects received ... and I had a "but..." clause to add to this statement, but it got lost in my brane, so I'll just stop here.

And since MM brings up JIM LEE'S SUPERMAN FEATURING JIM LEE, and there's an issue out this week, I'd just like to say that, despite all the distractionary bluster and hoohah that's accompanied JL's rendition of the S-Man, the story is solid stuff - it started slowly, but seems to have hit its stride; MUCH better than Mr. Azzarello's run at the Flying Rat.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I had been looking forward to it, and then I missed #1, and after reading #2, I knew I would enjoy it more if I had #1, so I was going to wait for the collection, and holy crap, it's $10.75 in Canada, but absolutely worth it.

So whattaya think, is it Starro or White Martians, or maybe even Despero?

Huck, Monday, 23 August 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, can I just take a moment to out myself as a geek for super-obvious symbolism and give DC (HOLY SHIT HIS INITIALS IT'S LIKE SERENDIPITIOUS SYNERGY) kudos for making the large Cloud Of Evil Monsters look just like a mushroom cloud?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My bet is Starro. Take a look at the cover of JLA #1.

Just a guess, mind you. My DC-fu is much weaker than my Marvel-fu.

David, sadly, is right about quiet, modest and quality projects getting lost in the OMIGOD YOU MUST BUY THIS TITLE AND ALL THE VARIANT COVERS NOW maelstrom we find ourselves swept up in these days.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! "VARIANT COVERS NOW" = 90s nostalgia coming back for seconds not even 6 months ago (and at least DC was only doing it for 2nd prints, at first).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(adjusts pocket protected) If I may interject, I believe that Matt Maxwell is actually refering to the cover of The Brave & The Bold #28, which was the first appearance of the Justice League of America, (readjusts glasses) and where the newly united League first faced Starro the Conqueror. (twiddles with slide-rule) Justice League of America #1, which appeared with a cover date of Oct. 1960 (re-readjusts glasses) featured the League in a deadly game of chess with Despero the Destroyer. (wets pants)

Huck, Monday, 23 August 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez I didn't realize that Despero was JACKED! UP! so much when he popped up in the Giffen / DeMatteis JL!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Huck is, of course, right. I bow to his alpha-geekosity.

And is it me, or does Despero look a lot like the Anti-Dad from Seaguy?

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been holding out for the HC and trying - in vain - not to sneak peeks at this in my local comic shop. It looks so beautiful....

David N (David N.), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Despero got jacked up during the Detroit JLA days first. But yeah, here, he doesn't look like he'd scare the Gay Ghost.

Huck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

And the covers...
http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/reviews/images/0402/newfrontier2.jpg

all of them are insane (the backs are usually even better!)

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I smell a covers portfolio collection...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If I was the kinda guy who put up posters, the back of #3 would rule all.

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Read #s 1 and 2 of this last night - really really enjoyable. Thanks ILC!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Final episode comes out this week!

Huk-L, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This week!? Egads! I have an excuse to herd my kids into the car and get me to the comix emporium today!

I can't wait for the inevitable oversize hardcover.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ILC hype is fast reaching the critical (ha) mass necessary for me to check this out when it's collected.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too -- I had only sort of noticed it, and hadn't been interested because I confuse Darwyn Cooke (who I'm not sure I've read) with Devin Grayson (who leaves me lukewarm at best).

Seaguy was the last thing that got this much ILC approval, I think, although Astonishing is certainly getting its nods.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

My exegesis on The New Frontier can be found right here, should you have a few moments to kill. I also wreak havoc on some Avengers preview pages as well...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Saturday, 9 October 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I nearly read it, but I'm just finishing up my own review of, so I'll do that first, lest I be infected by your ideas, then I'll post the link when it's up and we can have a duel!

Huk-L, Saturday, 9 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

To the death, sir! Two commentators enter, one commentator leaves!

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Saturday, 9 October 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i just finished reading the last one - i cried! incredible

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I've not got the last one yet, are you sharing it cinniblount?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

hold a sec!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hold a while actually as I'm still at work :(

i gots it - username: jblount74

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Gar! I still haven't done my review. Will try to do it tonight for Thursday's update.

Huk-L, Monday, 18 October 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess this'll be added to the tpb - http://www.dccomics.com/pdfs/dcuniverse/dcnewfront1.pdf

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Those first three pages showed up in WIZARD as promo stuff before the book came out. It'll be nice to have 'em in non-crummy .jpg format, though.

Still wish they weren't splitting it into two books. Boneheads.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Those three Wizard pages are just Korean War stuff, right?

Huk-L, Monday, 18 October 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think DC is hedging their bets on folks being more willing to pay $24.95 for 2 books of 192 pages each, rather than upwards of $50.00 for a bulky 384 pages of stuff.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that's where DC's going wrong as well. They're just pricing this thing too high. I'm guessing they'd move a hell of a lot more if it was a single book at 25 or 30 dollars, than two slimmer volumes for a higher price. NEW FRONTIER is about as thick as WATCHMEN, which DC didn't have any problems with in a single volume.

The three pages in question are mood pages, really. Not essential to the story, but beautiful nonetheless.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, DC should really be doing everything they can to get this book into the hands of comic lovers.

Huk-L, Monday, 18 October 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it'd be nice to have these in the long-lasting hardcover format, but they should also release the mondo-sized TPB version of this as well. Printed on paper that's resistant to peanut butter & jelly stains.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

So far, the best day I've had this fall was the Saturday after #6 came out, when I put on the Kinks' Village Green Preservation Society, poured myself a tall glass of chocolate milk, plopped myself down on the floor of my barely-moved-into new apt, and read the whole thing from front to back. I doubt I'll ever have as sweet a day as that again.

Huk-L, Monday, 18 October 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hoping that since DC is lowballing the paperback release that they'll throw a bone to the rich pig fanboys and put out an oversize collection with extras.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah! Just read #6! Great stuff! More please!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't hold your breath, Tom. Darwyn Cooke was pretty unhappy with DC's management as a result of things that happened during New Frontier, most of them not related to the book itself. I got the impression that he was going to work on creator-owned stuff for a while and not any DCU material.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

And for the record, Darwyn Cooke is Canadian. So, uh, he makes up for J0hn By®n3 (who's not really Canadian anyway). McF@rl@ne, well, that's our cross to bear, isn't it?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Cameron Stewart's a Canadian, so's Chip Zdarsky. Not to mention Shatner. Your nation's Byrne debt is paid in full.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

so i was raving to a friend about this today and he said i should check out this catwoman thing that i think cooke did - selena's big caper or something - my question to yall: yes?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

if you can find it cheap. it's good but not great, and the paperback price is taking the piss. if you can get the hardcover discounted now the paperback's out, go for it!

Selina's Big Score btw.

Absolutely worth seeking out, though, is an issue of Spider-Man's Tangled Web he did, that's a big goofy fun romance comic. #5 or so? There was a later one about Spider-Man bringing orphans presents or something that wasn't as great.

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Cooke also drew the Secret Origins and some Detective backup stories that featured the Catwoman and Smash Bradley, all of which are collected in the Dark End of the Street collection of the current Catwoman series (with some inking by Mike Allred). Recommended.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel almost guilty for not loving this. I like it, don't get me wrong ... I don't know, it just didn't grab me. A lot of the J'onn stuff is great, though, especially him watching TV in #2.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't bother reading the Kennedy text in #6.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

eight months pass...
I just read Darwyn's issue of Solo, which is sort of like a sketchbook with continuity. Lots of idead flying off in all directions, different artstyles, autobiography, fake period ads etc.
It features a great little Batman story though.

Makes me look forward even more to his "The Spirit" run....

ok, my first impression of this was so wrong. totally awesome.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I've been reading an issue a night all week. Since Sunday.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Did you get vol. 2, Slocki? I'm still waiting for it, the store was out last week.

(how many times have you read it, Huk?)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

(this is my first time re-reading the whole shebang since the last issue arrived!)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Y'all know that Darwyn Cooke is the artist AND WRITER on a new Spirit series, right? (He's also illustrating a Bat / Spirit x-over book, but it's written by JEPH, and you guys, and me, we ain't so hot on JEPH when Ed McGuinness ain't his buddy.) (Not that JEPH'll keep me from buying it.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I've never read the OLD Spirit series.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

i did get vol 2 and the payoff was great. and before that i re-read vol 1 & totally loved it... i think it just wasn't the best first comic to read when i was re-immersing myself in comixworld (not enough instant-gratification)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

I really love the face Martian Manhunter makes himself when he decides to go public. It's SOOOOO friendly.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

it's really dick tracy (and his buddy is really robert mitchum)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

One of the Challengers has a moment where he looks like a perfect hybrid of Mitchum and Dean Martin.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

ON-VOLUME EDITION NOW PLEASE DC

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 15 September 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

This is absolutely great. I read it yesterday, after having read "Batman: Ego" during the week (also great stuff) and I was blown away. Also cried at some point (King Faraday's death, I believe).

The Spirit series is going to be ace. Couldn't think of anyone else to write and draw it.

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Sunday, 18 September 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

Jules Feiffer and Will Eisner?

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 18 September 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

besides Jules Feiffer and Will Eisner...

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Sunday, 18 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

It was weird reading this at the same time as Huk's Martian Manhunter mini-series. They make great parallel narratives.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

I like that it's become MY Martian Manhunter series, as if I had something to with it.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

i didn't know darwyn cooke was a toronto guy!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:32 (twenty years ago)

He's hilarious -- about 85% intentionally. I saw him do a "Writing for Comics" talk at the Beguiling last year. At one point he looked at us as if he had a great secret of the trade to impart, and then he said, "There's no scene in comic books that couldn't be improved by setting it in an abandoned fairground." And nodded seriously.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Saturday, 4 February 2006 01:45 (twenty years ago)

He's right, though.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Saturday, 4 February 2006 03:24 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 February 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

"Your theories are already a laughing stock, Jor-El! But to meet with us, the science council of Krypton, in this abandoned fairground is the last straw!"

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 06:24 (twenty years ago)

Can I say--without any value judgment implied--that this is the WASPiest comic I've ever read?

kenchen, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:41 (twenty years ago)

No, the chances are you probably can't :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I think Cooke tried to address that a little bit with the John Henry character, but really, his source material is actually the WASPiest comics ever (even though they were mostly produced by Jewish dudes).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

OTM, Huk. But why stop with Steel? couldn't Cooke have dropped Ragman in there?

veronica moser (veronica moser), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

i see where you're coming from but waspiest EVER... i dunno! there's a lot of really waspy stuff in comix, esp as huk says, in stuff from the era that new frontier references.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty waspy.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

The John Henry bits are kind of a shock compared to the rest, like HEY, BLACK PEOPLE!

It's still really good.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

is it waspier than say... the x-men? which is set in an UPSTATE NEW YORK PREP SCHOOL?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

I think the Jewishness of the creators came through a bit more in the Marvel comics of that era than the DC stuff, which was a little more aggressively whitebread (oxymoron?) since it was, by that point, more organized as a profit-making enterprise.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

the fantastic four are a pretty waspy group! except ben grimm, i guess! what's he? polish?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Does this make me a WASJ?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

The WASPiness isn't a bad thing--it's just curious. I think the thing that surprised me the most when I read this is that the books are totally irony-free. I can't think of very many other retro revisitations that don't intentionally dump the '50s into a kitsch engine. I think that's what also make it different from, say, actual silver age books--those may have been waspy as a side-effect of being produced in a given time and context. I mean, most comics have all white characters, but New Frontier sprints up into waspiness head-on--and a particular chummy, machismo waspiness where guys call each other by their last name and all seem to be wearing flight jackets. When I try to remember the dialogue, it sort of runs like a bunch of crew cut guys saying things like "Roger, Skip" and "Okie Dokey, Dirk" in my head. It's funny--like reading an ethnic comic!

kenchen, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

One thing I don't like is the way that the covers are included separately, since each issue was really its own book (in that there were cliffhangers, dramatic reveals, wonderful openings). It would read better with marked breaks between certain pages.
But it even includes the little ribbon bookmark-y thing (which is great for flipping back to the annotations).

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

As much as I should be happy about the animated movie of the book, I think I'll pass and instead read the Absolute edition again. Though having Agent Dale Cooper give voice to Superman might be enough to make me sit down and watch it.

Matt M., Wednesday, 8 August 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

blah blah 75 minutes blah blah "real men wear pants" blah blah doogie flash, md blah blah Darwyn Cooke SO does not look like i imagined (more like Slam Bradley, i thought!) blah blah Paul Levitz does blah blah gotta be better than any Death of Supes blah blah cautiously optimistic

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 06:04 (eighteen years ago)

Matt M., Wednesday, 28 November 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Dr. Superman, Thursday, 29 November 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

But that looks shithouse.

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 29 November 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

but it'll look better moving, right?
right?
COME ON! I'm clinging to this as the one thing that's keeping me going until the BLOCKBUSTER SUMMER MOVIE SEASON TO DESTROY ALL SENSES 2008 starts.

it's gonna be as shitty as Superman Doomsday looks, isn't it?

Dr. Superman, Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:18 (eighteen years ago)

it looks like a fourteen-year-old drew it in computer class using the mouse, sorry Huk

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 29 November 2007 07:42 (eighteen years ago)

Doesn't look like the other stuff I've seen.

Maybe the different style is to emphasise J'onn's aliennessosity?

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't watch that preview upthread until just now, and hence did not know that Darwyn Cooke has been moonlighting as Toby on "The Office."

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 November 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)
