Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

estela, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

my mum used to tell me that i should shut up and eat vegemite, since they 'taste the same'.... but she HATED marmite. fucking crazy woman.

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

ok so now i know why i really love marmite.

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

milo is obviously amazing.

wilter, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

i used to think akta vite was ok but it's actually gross

electricsound, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

my new fave thing: milo and vita 'original creamy' soy milk A++++++

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:21 (seventeen years ago)

i know!! i found this out when i was trying to explain to jordan what is milo

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:24 (seventeen years ago)

Also there is Canadian milo it sounds awful tho:

Nestle has now introduced a Canadian version of Milo. It is made in Canada. It dissolves rapidly like Quik, probably due to market expectations, but still retains the Malt flavour. It is also sweeter than other varieties.

wilter, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:25 (seventeen years ago)

quik is for children ffs.

wilter, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

akta vite is bad milo competitor that is full of folate apparently

electricsound, Monday, 31 March 2008 01:30 (seventeen years ago)

milo's great

no vote for NEVER HAD MARMITE NEVER HAD VEGEMITE ?? consider this a vote for milo then

jergïns, Monday, 31 March 2008 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

if you've never had either then just vote MARMITE OKAY

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 02:51 (seventeen years ago)

I refuse to pretend to have a preference for what kind of processed manure you people on the wrong side of the planet rub all over yourselves before sexual intercourse

El Tomboto, Monday, 31 March 2008 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

stop giving us ideas

electricsound, Monday, 31 March 2008 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

it makes great lube

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

don't knock it till you've tried it, tombot

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

gross.

wilter, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

marmite maybe.

wilter, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

OMG sex ed when i was 14: teacher told us a story about a teenage couple using vicks' vaporub as lube..... YAOOOOOOOW

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

I wonder if that was on the curriculum: "warn the students of the discomforts of rubbing vaporub on their genitals".

wilter, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:35 (seventeen years ago)

which side are you from tombot, the inside?

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

My bassist once told the story of his masturbation experiences with ICY/HOT to the recording engineer when we were doing some songs and it definitely was a WTFTMI moment.

libcrypt, Monday, 31 March 2008 05:29 (seventeen years ago)

too much incandescence

estela, Monday, 31 March 2008 05:59 (seventeen years ago)

too much icyhot

max, Monday, 31 March 2008 06:08 (seventeen years ago)

too much injudicious grointment

estela, Monday, 31 March 2008 06:15 (seventeen years ago)

i would just like to point out that grointment has been otm throughout this thread

jergïns, Monday, 31 March 2008 06:17 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

grointment.

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

out of loyalty to the board, affection for both the australian and the new zealander members, and because i lack personal experience with both vegemite and marmite, i voted twice, one time for each.

lxy, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

my aunt told a girl at her school that marmite was good for your skin and the next day the girl complained it had got all over her pillowcase. she was an olden days drongo.

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

lol that's ridiculous.

vegemite on toast with a fried egg is good hungover food fyi.

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

i am going to host a "which is better vegemite or marmite" tasting party (provided i can figure out where to buy them) when remy's here. won't that be fun?

lxy, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

to be brutally honest, i think it will be a bad times party.

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

vegemite is hangover miracle food.

lxy, i will send you some if you want, one of each.

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

i think we will have enough to drink that it will be a good times party in the end, but thank you for the warning, wilter.

thanks, estela, i'll let you know. first i will look around to see if i can find some here. say, did you ever try the bugles?

lxy, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

lol no, when i went to order them they were waiting for a shipment to arrive, then they moved premises and kept sending out funny frazzled email bulletins about how everything would be on track soon so i just left it, but i'll try again.

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

i just checked: any day now

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

I've noticed there are loads more places that stock American confectionary these days. Have you noticed this, estela?

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

yes and i'm glad because i have excessive <3 of milk duds and babe ruths.

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

<3 movie candy

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

TBBH, I'm not that into sweets, but it makes me happy that there is hershey's nonsense and stuff available, it makes aus confectionary seem super lame.

There is a really good place in Coolangatta.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

where? (not that i get down there very often.)

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

In the shopping resort thingy. I don't even know what they call it these days, "showcase"?? on the ground floor. It has been there since I can remember.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

YAY MILK DUDS

jergïns, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

why does one recalcitrant dud always stick to the bottom of the box?

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

i always like that stubborn one the best, it is a classic dud.

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

actually, that one is the "dud", and the rest of them are known as "milks", hence the name

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

"recalcitrant dud"

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

the greatness of milk duds can not be exaggerated

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:22 (seventeen years ago)

lxy you must let me or estela send you the marmite and vegemite for your party - english marmite is VERY different to nz marmite, and if you do find some it'll probably be the yucky english stuff.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

if i can get my hands on marmite or vegemite, i promise to make a drink out of each of them and report back.

FB will join me in this endeavor, he just isn't aware of that fact yet.

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

thank you, ruby. i will be sure NOT to buy a sucky english version, and will surely let you know if i am unable to find the real deal.

see, the offers for sending completely justify my dual, self-cancelling vote. i cannot not be forced to choose.

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

whatwhatwhat?? there are different marmites? why would they do that?! proper (uk) marmite is the pure, distilled essence of happy dreams - equal parts ambrosia, nectar and mana. vegemite is okay because it has a different name and it's your own fault if you buy that instead, but it makes me sad that there is a (likely inferior) product masquerading as marmite.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

lol so rong.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

apparently ppl use both the mites as warm flu remedy drinks. Sounds awful.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

I think if you mixed some into a bloody mary it wouldn't be that horrific.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

found the britishes local store http://www.abritishaffaire.com/ lol nice name

jergïns, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:36 (seventeen years ago)

xpost I'm sure that John will be able to report on its efficacy on whatever ailment he has managed to contract by the time he gets his hands on both items

Sara R-C, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

i left "lack of horrific" behind long ago when it comes to drinking thanks to ILX supporters of the FB and JJ will drink it threads

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:38 (seventeen years ago)

john justen, i am happy to also mail you some vegemite and marmite if you would like (vegemite is going to win.)

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

John - Dan P can hit you up with some marmite and possibly even some vegmite next time he sends you poop in the mail as we have a lotta irish stores here in Boston that carry it.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

ha, maybe you could just go to that Irish Indeed store in St. Paul (on Randolph and... uh, one of the cross streets that I pass on my way to St. K) and buy some there. If nothing else, I'm sure you could get some lovely green tschotkes.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

ok i have A PLAN

estela, you send vegemite to jj and lxy

i will send marmite to jj and lxy

then we will sit back and watch the fun times begin

and WTF mr spiralli???? nz marmite is the BEST you crazy man

Rubyredd, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

Hello I am interested in this different NZ marmite? What's that about then? Explain me the difference?

I tried some of that champagne marmite (UK) the other day. Couldn't tell the difference tbh.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno, i can't say without having tried the NZ version but if therre was thing The Man didn't need to fuck with, it was marmite. does the NZ one have lamb in to boost the economy?

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

lamb joke

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

sorry. i can't help it.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

spiralli out of control

^this was good. Better than the cheeseburger in a biscuit or cheeseburger shapes or whatever.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:57 (seventeen years ago)

spiralli out of control

lool

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

okay ruby and estela, i will accept your offers of shipping the goods so as to ensure we are tasting the proper variety of product. i do not want to risk spoiling the results with an inferior brand or shoddy imposter.

jergins, help me think what to send in return that they can't get in their respective home countries.

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

hamburger helper. i guarantee they don't sell that nywhere outside of North America. or beefaroni.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)

i've just read up on both products and i think i will like both of them.

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

i am not sending hamburger helper or beefaroni, by the way.

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

tbbh you will like Vegemite better.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

Also you guys mustn't let the fact that NZ is probably better than Aus, in general, sway you.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

vegemite is more mellow, marmite is sharper.

i haven't actually tried the britishes version of marmite but i'm still willing to bet it is the inferior product.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

i will try to remember to post you some tomorrow, lxy

Rubyredd, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:18 (seventeen years ago)

i will follow the lxy lead and accept shipment as well

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:18 (seventeen years ago)

yay, i can't wait to send vegemite off to be crowned winner, send your addresses!

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

If you haven't had British marmite how do you know it's different? Maybe marmite is always THE SAME. It could be the elusive universal truth.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

emails sent

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

no no no i've been told it's different and i BELIEEEEEEEVE

ok i have your address already lxy, and now i jj's address. i just have to remember to post tomorrow.

estela, DON'T BE COUNTING YOUR CHOCOLATE EGGS BEFORE THEY HATCH.

ALSO: I THINK THIS SHOULD BE A BLIND TEST i.e. when you receive your antipodean products, you must get someone to put them both on toast and not tell you which is which, and then taste. in the spirit of fairness and impartiality.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

i'm not putting toast in my drink

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

i have standards

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

not many, but still

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

The line has been drawn and it has been drawn at TOAST

Sara R-C, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

but srsly vegemite on SAOs is the bisnis.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

i am starting to fear that we are speaking a language that shares much of its lexicon with english but is in fact, full of wacky made up words like SAO

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:40 (seventeen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAO_%28biscuit%29

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

Acronyms are FUN

Sara R-C, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)

yay! address is sent, estela!

thank you for your generosity and thank you for your interest in science, friends.

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

i think marmite-covered toast fingers would make a nice garnish in a bloody mary

Rubyredd, Thursday, 3 April 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

ok! got both yr addresses, will send as soon as i can, i must fly, i am late for work.

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)

Can I send everyone concerned some Bovril so you all stop eating yr ridiculous thrush pastes and gets some meaty goodness* inside you instead?

*I understand there's no meat in it any more so vegetarians, your lifestyle choice need not be compromised!

Mark C, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, wikipedia tells me they have re-stated beef in the recipe. Will this be a problem?

Mark C, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

reINstated, gah

Mark C, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

THE END

(until the verdicts come in.)

estela, Friday, 4 April 2008 04:05 (seventeen years ago)

ADDENDUM:

Australians in Hong Kong are finding expatriate life harder to cope with due to a shortage of one of their favourite foods - Vegemite, a news report said on Sunday.

Supplies of the popular spread have run out across the city of 6.9 million, where tens of thousands of Australian expatriate business people, diplomats and their families live.

Many families unable to do without Vegemite as a way of starting their day have resorted to getting relatives to bring in supplies when they come on visits, the Sunday Morning Post newspaper reported.

Schoolboy David Atkins, who attends the Australian International School, told the newspaper he was miserable after going for three weeks without his favourite spread.

"We have some now because Auntie Karen brought some up from Sydney, and they have plenty of Vegemite there," he said.

A spokeswoman for one of Hong Kong's two main supermarket chains Wellcome said suppliers had blamed the shortage on a change of the company that packages Vegemite for export in Australia.

But a spokesman for Vegemite's manufacturer Kraft told the newspaper the explanation seemed unlikely and promised: "Rest assured we will work to ensure Vegemite is back in Hong Kong as soon as possible."

British-made yeast extract Marmite, which looks similar to Vegemite but has a different taste, is still available in Hong Kong but many Australians refuse to accept it as a substitute.

"YEAST EXTRACT" SOUNDS FUCKING DELIGHTFUL IF ANYTHING DOES

Lingbert, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

i only sent a small 125g jar of marmite to lxy and jj because that shit is expensive to post from halfway round the world, if it turns out you all hate it.

if, otoh, you all really like it, then i would be willing to send more. because that's the kind of girl i am.

Rubyredd, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

heart u

Lingbert, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

when i come visit seattle we shall sit on lxy and jergz's porch and eat marmite on toast and drink the milo that i will have also brought with me and listen to golden-oldie pumpkin songs. it will be great.

Rubyredd, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't mailed the vegemite yet but i am on it.

estela, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

ha i had never really listened to a smashing pumpkins album until like a week ago. i was at my mom's and my brother had left behind a bunch of his old cds that he didn't want anymore. i took the best of barrington levy (a cd i had bought him for christmas several years ago, the little prick); mos def- the new danger; smashing pumpkins - mellon collie and siamese dream. mos def sounds pretty bad after a listen. mellon collie has some pretty good stuff though. didn't realize how many singles came off of that one. haven't listened to siamese dream yet.

Lingbert, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

estela i would've figured you to be more prompt, less tardy with your affairs. i guess i was wrong.

Lingbert, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

yes, totally wrong, i am a shambles.

estela, Monday, 7 April 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

You have such an adorable, cheery way of shambling! :-)

wilter, Monday, 7 April 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

Thankyou, Lingbert. :-)

estela, Monday, 7 April 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

update: today i purchased two small jars of vegemite.

estela, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 11:56 (seventeen years ago)

Did anyone want me to send Bovril? No? ;_;

Mark C, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know what bovril is but i'll eat it

send it to lxy

Lingbert, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Okay - webmail me address lxy!

(isn't lxy a vgtrn?)

Mark C, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

marc c,

we've got some YES for BOVRIL! i shall webmail you?

(yes - how you know that is a mystery to me - but the boys are not.)

thank you ALL for assisting with this international collaboration of taste-testing. it is very exciting.

lxy, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

that c. how? kkkkkkk

lxy, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

i'll drink anything so sure

webmail sent

John Justen, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

webmail sent and thanks again!

lxy, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

Got both yr webmails! Thank you and I will buy some bovril as soon as I don't forget to buy some bovril (anyone with a memory like mine will understand exactly what I mean).

John and Jergins, you must both a) drink bovril as per insructions and b) eat bovril on white bread toast with butter/spread of your choice. I strongly advice smearing less bovril on than you might think - if it's opaque, there's too much and it gets overpowering.

lxy, when I mentioned it had meat in it you said you wouldn't eat it, so I donned my putting two and two together hat and deduced your Vegetarianity. No stalking involved :)

Mark C, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

Hang on, was it jergins who was going to eat my beef paste? Or lingbert? Which one is lxy's boyfriend?

Mark C, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

lol, mark. obviously you missed the UNNECESSARILY EXTENSIVE DISCUSSION on this topic in other threads. no boyfriends, just boys.

the tasting committee will be comprised of:

jergins, lingbert, remy and me. bovril is for boys only, though.

:)

lxy, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

"lxys boyfriend" is not a person, it is a FEELING

John Justen, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

uhh.

lxy, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

Should I send remy a jar too? (I know you don't like me remy but I'm sorry I've been a cock to you and I'd like to partly make up for it by sending you delicious steaming goodness if you'd like some)

lxy, that EXTENSIVE THREAD was got me hooked on ITR in the first place :)

Mark C, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

I have never had Vegemite, but I love Marmite. Someone send me a jar and I will tell you if it stinks or not.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

if we keep this up, i think these food donations may get the american economy back on track

John Justen, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

I could use a thing of ketchup while we're at it.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

mark c.,

i roped remy into our tasting party since he's coming to sea-wa.

so: i am planning to share all of the varieties with him.

of course if he wants his own "amends" jar, he will probably pipe up when he gets to a computer.

roxymuzak,

LOL!

lxy, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

"lxys boyfriend" is not a person, it is a FEELING

-- John Justen

OMG YES JOHN JUSTEN

sometimes we are alll of here at itr are lxy's boyfriend.

roxy, did you get my postcard? if so, and your postal system is to be trusted, i might send you marmite.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

hahahahahahaha ruby...

mom, dad, meet my boyfriend, ITR.
what? no, right there, on the screen.
yeah yeah, right here, the whole thing. no, all of them.
no, it's not a person, it's a FEELING.
oh forget it. we're leaving now.

lxy, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, Rubes, I got it just the other day! I tried to find that thread to thank you for it, but it seems to have fallen off New Answers, and I can't remember what it was called anyway. Thanks!! It totally brightened my week.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

(Oh, and I've had Marmite before! I love it! Send some to a nonbeliever in my stead.)

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

Hey Emily!

Mark C, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

Hey Mark! Long time no C.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

thanx mark c i will eat or drink or whatever i'm supposed to do with that whatever stuff and i will enjoy it.

jergïns, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

dear roxy, if you promise to eventually get around to putting up the 1p3 best blonde poll (that sunny is going to win) i will mail you vegemite.

estela, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 02:02 (seventeen years ago)

marmite is good with cheese too

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 02:45 (seventeen years ago)

vegemite is good with cheese; marmite is marmite with cheese.

estela, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

I looooooool'd

wilter, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 06:24 (seventeen years ago)

i still don't even understand what marmite nor vegemite is. i know i can look it up, but they sound really artificial and false, and it's probably better that i don't know what i'm eating before i eat it.

Lingbert, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 07:32 (seventeen years ago)

lol what jokes will follow that comment omg lol tee hee

Lingbert, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 07:33 (seventeen years ago)

i like how non-commital roxy was about the blonde poll. and straight-up changed the subject!

jergïns, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 07:37 (seventeen years ago)

thread needs bovril pix

jergïns, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 07:38 (seventeen years ago)

Tesco didn't have the wee jars of Bovril. My search will have to move further afield.

Mark C, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

this morning i smiled at the two dear little jars of international vegemite sitting patiently on my kitchen bench but that is as far as it went, i was too busy to mail them. 'not today,' i told them. 'we don't mind,' they said, 'how long will we be we going for? when can we come home again?' and i turned my face so they would not see my tears.

estela, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

u got mail, estela

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

Hey estela, do you want some bovril?

Mark C, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

"Alas! my poor Brother"

lxy, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

i sent you a reply, roxy.

thank you, mark c, but i've had bovril before, it has quite a few nostalgic fans over here.

there is a reasonably high chance that the tasters won't like any of our offerings but we will deal with that if and when it happens.

estela, Thursday, 10 April 2008 11:55 (seventeen years ago)

Is your lack of comment on bovril's deliciousness a polite way of expressing your dislike?

Also - where do cherry ripes come from? Aus or Ca?

Mark C, Thursday, 10 April 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

i figured out what i'm going to send to our kind overseas friends!!

mark c and estela, webmail addresses to me?

lxy, Thursday, 10 April 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

Sent! Woo!

Mark C, Thursday, 10 April 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

received, mark c. !YaY and HurraY!

lxy, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

what are you going to send lxy? or is it a surprise?

Lingbert, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

A surprise! A surprise!

Mark C, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

of course it is a surprise. do you even know me, lingblert?

lxy, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

no who are you

Lingbert, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

i AM a surprise!

lxy, Thursday, 10 April 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

(i don't know what it means but i like how it sounds)

lxy, Thursday, 10 April 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

hahahahaha this thread

HI DERE, Thursday, 10 April 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

oh shit i just remembered: promite >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> marmite.

wilter, Friday, 11 April 2008 02:21 (seventeen years ago)

what is promite and do we have to taste that too?

lxy, Friday, 11 April 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)

oh shit accent monkey asked me to send her promite months ago and i never got round to it! i hope she doesn't see this thread and get mad that i sent off marmite to other ilxors so quickly!

Rubyredd, Friday, 11 April 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

Guys I found the bovril! Now I need to figure out a) a way of packaging it and b) US customs laws.

Mark C, Sunday, 13 April 2008 10:47 (seventeen years ago)

Waitrose - where I specifically went for bovril (but ended up doing a $225 shop) - didn't have any! But they did have vegemite!! The world is UPSIDE DOWN!!!

Mark C, Sunday, 13 April 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

how many mites do you people have

John Justen, Sunday, 13 April 2008 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

I had scabies once.

Mark C, Sunday, 13 April 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

please don't send those

lxy, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)

It's okay, they cleared up a good nine years ago. Only infestation I currently suffer from is moths. Though it was kind of poignant - I emptied, swept and bleached the shelves where the moths had been breeding, and a few hours later I found one solitary moth sitting on the back wall in an empty cupboard.

Mark C, Sunday, 13 April 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

EARLY ARRIVAL POINT TO MARMITE!

John Justen, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

promptness is one of itrs core values

John Justen, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

yesterday,

jergins: i got mail from so-and-so today.
lxy: but no marmite?
jergins: what?
lxy: no marmite?
jergins: huh?
lxy: are you saying no marmite arrived today?
jergins: WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??!!!
lxy: DID A PACKAGE FROM RUBYREDD COME IN THE MAIL TODAY!!?!
jergins: all i could hear was "nomar might, nomar might, nomar might."

lxy, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

YAY JOHN JUSTEN YOUR POSTAL SYSTEM DOES NOT SUCK BALLS AFTERALL

i don't know if this has been mentioned, but a little warning:
while vegemite is fairly mellow, marmite is STRONG - only use about half a teaspoon on a piece of bread. (obv this advice is for the seattle crowd, not for you mr justen, who will only be enjoying marmite in a drink. in which case, one whole teaspoon to one medium sized bloody mary would probably be adequate)

lxy, i hope your marmite arrives soon!

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

I will send the bovril on the weekend, promise! Rubes, did you make any kind of customs declaration? Also, come chat :)

Mark C, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

i just wrote "prepackaged food" which is what i usually put when i send chocolate and stuff to jordan, and it gets there fine. no chatz today! must clean room! the minimisation process is beginning and i've already gotten rid of two huge rubbish bags of clothes... i'm boxing up all my books now ;_;

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

did slow estela send the vegemite yet

Lingbert, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

nomar might yet

lxy, Thursday, 17 April 2008 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

lingbert: no but i have got some bubble wrap now. progress, not perfection.

slow estela sounds like the name of a gullible character from a fairy tale, a plain looking girl with limited prospects inexpertly wielding a broom.

i need to know something, if i include a surprise (a nice one) for sara in the package to john is it going to cause inconvenience, i don't know how far away you are from each or how often you catch up.

estela, Thursday, 17 April 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

it should be no problem, unless it is a really nice thing in which case i will keep it and stop returning her phone calls

John Justen, Thursday, 17 April 2008 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

estela, I <3 you.

John, you are lucky that I am fond of you.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 17 April 2008 05:44 (seventeen years ago)

i know, it helps me get free nice stuff!

John Justen, Thursday, 17 April 2008 05:46 (seventeen years ago)

I am so tired that I have lost all my impulses to strangle you, John.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 17 April 2008 05:48 (seventeen years ago)

WHERE IS MY SURPRISE PEOPLE

jergïns, Thursday, 17 April 2008 06:12 (seventeen years ago)

FUCCCCCCCK. I just went to make some toast with vegemite at work and some arsehole has finished the jar off and left it empty in the fridge >:O

wilter, Friday, 18 April 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

you keep it in the fridge?

Rubyredd, Friday, 18 April 2008 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

At work, it is put in the fridge, not by me.

wilter, Friday, 18 April 2008 01:24 (seventeen years ago)

oh shit there is milo in this piece of shit i just remembered ^_^

wilter, Friday, 18 April 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

Bovril all boxed up (homemade boxes made from hacking up a case of Amarone) and ready to go!! Hope customs don't play hardball.

Mark C, Saturday, 19 April 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

Gah, post office is closed saturday afternoons. Sorry guys, will be a little bit more delayed ;_;

Mark C, Saturday, 19 April 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

that's okay, seeing as our marmite still has not arrived. wtf postal service.

it's fun to know that things are crawling their way to us, ever so ever so slowly.

lxy, Saturday, 19 April 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

look who is crawling now

jergïns, Saturday, 19 April 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

i apologize for my previous post. it's making me queasy.

lxy, Saturday, 19 April 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

lxy, it was a bit weird writing "lxy" on an address label - there won't be postal confusion once it arrives, will there?

Mark C, Saturday, 19 April 2008 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

all her bills arrive that way

LXY all caps no last name

jergïns, Saturday, 19 April 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

i'm really upset the marmite hasn't arrived. i posted it two weeks ago! i'm going to write a letter of complaint to the US/seattle postal service.

Rubyredd, Saturday, 19 April 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

you aren't serious are you

jergïns, Saturday, 19 April 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

what makes you think i'm not serious?

Rubyredd, Saturday, 19 April 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

it's highly mysterious since no one would ever steal marmite.

estela, Saturday, 19 April 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

maybe it's ended up in some us postal service biohazard disposal facility.

estela, Saturday, 19 April 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

estela that is not nice

Rubyredd, Saturday, 19 April 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

i was coming from a place of <3, trying to steer people away from suspecting that you only pretended you had posted it, which is what i suspect.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

that is akin to saying i like john justen more than i like lxy, which is not nice (or true) at all

Rubyredd, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

that's right, i forgot john justen's had arrived, i will have to do some more thinking about this.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

less thinking more mailing woman

jergïns, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

sweetheart

jergïns, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

dear one

jergïns, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

i will be clutching bubble wrap while i do my further thinking, it will look promising.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

sweetly, dearly clutching bubble wrap, all the time thinking, thinking, then realising with a start that the post office has closed.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

um it's sunday

jergïns, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

realising with a jolt that it's sunday.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

a jolt is far more shocking than a start, i may need to rest for a couple of days, take it easy, not rush around doing errands.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

won't you be shocked by the big newspaper on the porch

jergïns, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

it might be very bad for my sweet heart.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

on thursday i entered the post office, looked at the mailing boxes and padded envelopes for sale, thought for a minute, then left again. i should have stayed and bought these particular little boxes they had, they were perfect, but there was a long line of people with frosted hair and grim sets to their mouths, and over by the window all the customer pens were broken so there was a lot of angry scritching going on, it wasn't conducive.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

wtf @ the post office near my work: it's the middle of the city, and everytime i go there, no matter the day or the time, it's totally packed. HELLO GET MORE STAFF

Rubyredd, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago)

socialolism

jergïns, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

i have probably had dismal times in that post office as well, maybe you have seen my unhappy ghost, stuck in the line forever.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

postlol service

Rubyredd, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

post lolffice?

Rubyredd, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

i keep waiting for my toothless post office clerk to retire. i can't look at her

jergïns, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

one day at the post office in orlando an unusual man materialised at my side and asked me to smell his bag, a shiny paper gift one, which i did not.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

the ghost of drug couriers past

jergïns, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

i detected an overpowering scent of rat.

estela, Sunday, 20 April 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

lxy, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

well, maybe john justen can scoop out half his marmite and send it on to you. in the interests of fairness. or i'll bring some with me in two months and mail it to you once i'm in the states.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

personally, just btw you and me, i think this was some kind of SABOTAGE on the part of estela.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

Lingbert, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 04:30 (seventeen years ago)

Mark C, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 11:57 (seventeen years ago)

Mark C, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

jergïns, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

jergïns, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 04:26 (seventeen years ago)

Good show, estela.

Mark C, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 07:57 (seventeen years ago)

even though i am blushing furiously and feeling very uncomfortable i intend to graciously accept these accolades and not succumb to the urge to denigrate my achievement so, difficult though this is for me, i thank you, one and all.

estela, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

all hearts and flowers and kudos? YES!

lxy, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

BOVRIL

John Justen, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

IT IS HERE

John Justen, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

so i dissolve this in something, yes?

(no urgency, i'm at work so experiments will have to wait their turn)

John Justen, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

HOT BOVRILLED RUM

John Justen, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

oh god

jergïns, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

John, there are 2 ways to consume Bovril:

1) make a tasty hot drink by dissolving however much of the it it suggests in boiling water

2) (and this is the good one) toast some fresh white bread, butter (or margarine) generously, and while still as hot as possible, spread bovril very thinly - most of the bread should be visible through the bovril. If the bovril is completely opaque at any point it's too thick. I reckon you'd need less than half a teaspoonful per slice.

Mark C, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

2) should be the method for all three on toast when the judgment day arrives, as it will: the mills of itr grind slowly but they grind exceedingly small.

estela, Thursday, 1 May 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

Gah, estela, you have ruined my plan: that m- and v-mite would suffer through over-application, and subtle, sexy bovril would be the only sensible alternative for new, tastier America.

Mark C, Thursday, 1 May 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously people, eat the spreads already. I need feedback!

Mark C, Thursday, 1 May 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

I've started eating kangaroo since my try-hard gourmand friend convinced me it's better for teh environment, leaner, reasonably priced etc.

Estela, you in on the kangaroo steak action at all??

wilter, Thursday, 1 May 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

I remember eating 'kanga bangas' and they were fucking awful, but I can hack the steakz.

wilter, Thursday, 1 May 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

(i thought this an appropriate place to start roo meat discussion)

wilter, Thursday, 1 May 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

why not?

eat the spreads already.

i was thinking i needed to try all at the same time in order not to be prejudiced. is that wrong?

jergïns, Thursday, 1 May 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

is it quite gamey-tasting? i've never had it.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 1 May 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

bovril tastes like ox not rabbit!!

jergïns, Thursday, 1 May 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

Rubyredd, It is a bit gamey tasting but it is very much a red meat. You can't overcook it, it dries out really easily. I find it to be like super-lean lamb.

wilter, Thursday, 1 May 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

WANT

ruby i don't want to bump that other thread so i'll say it here: there are some great Aberhart pix wow. would <3 <3 <3 a postcard thanks :)

Rubyredd, Friday, 2 May 2008 00:24 (seventeen years ago)

please do

jergïns, Friday, 2 May 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

net images/postcards don't really do his work justice. i saw his exhibition last year and it was AMAZING. he really captures that latent 'settler nightmare' or colonial gothic image of nz, and avoids the stereotypical tacky icons.

Rubyredd, Friday, 2 May 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

soooooo serious
Is there an age before which children shouldn't have Marmite?

estela, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

almond roca: buttercrunch toffee with almonds!

it is utterly DIVINE <3 <3 <3 <3

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 04:18 (seventeen years ago)

i can't stop eating this stuff

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

That does sound rather tasty. I'm a sucker for almonds.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 04:33 (seventeen years ago)

ohyay, ruby! and guess what?!! MARMITE IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!

thank you thank you!

lxy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 06:22 (seventeen years ago)

the two little jars look so sweet sitting on the windowsill together, waiting for their wee australian partner to arrive. it's like detente through jarred comestibles.

lxy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 06:26 (seventeen years ago)

sara, do you want me to send you some almond roca? i will if you webmail your address!

lxy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 06:27 (seventeen years ago)

okay now we've got 2 of 3 i'm baout ready to do this thing

YOUR ORGANS, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 07:26 (seventeen years ago)

YOUR ORGANS, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 07:37 (seventeen years ago)

the vegemite will be there soon, which means the small sweet surprise will be there soon too.

estela, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 07:41 (seventeen years ago)

OMG SEATTLE POST OFFICE YOU DON'T SUCK SO BAD AFTERALL

i won't send that letter of complaint now.

(lxy, i have about 4 pieces of almond roca left... i'm such a piggy! but it is SO FREAKIN GOOD)

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

lxy, you are too sweet! You guys have to stop offering to send me things. I can't even get organized enough to get my bathrooms cleaned right now, much less send things via post office. The guilt will kill me!!!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

hey lady i'm offering not asking so send your address already!

xox

lxy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

ruby, i know, right? soooo good. the day i mailed it i had to go buy some for myself because it was all i could do to refrain from ripping open one of the packages.

lxy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

once all three are here, i will do a proper test on toast. i will not count my black label experiment in the final results

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

also, jj and fb will still drink it.

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

So you're drinking toast now, too?

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

lxy, I will try to webmail my address to you and then this summer I will try to send something back. (Don't worry, not poop. That is strictly John's department, whatever he might tell you.)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

O HAPPY DAY THE VEGEMITE HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!

we will have a taste test very soon and record our results here. live blog it? post pictures? youtube? who knows??!

anyway, thank you, dear estela, for the lovely package! thank you! thanks!

<3,
lxy

lxy, Monday, 12 May 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

i think there should be categories in the judging, eg. best looking jar, nicest colour of spread, nicest texture, nicest smell, best taste with margarine, best taste with butter, best taste in a bloody mary, etc

Rubyredd, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

nicest colour of spread

I don't think we should worry about this one.

wilter, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

live blog it?

lol @ u

jergïns, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

those are good ideas, ruby! we could plan an entire contest weekend.

re color: why not?

re live blog: why not?

re trying to get this posted: pipe down for a second, all y'all.

lxy, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

categories are good. i rate everything!

jergïns, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

lxy, isn't the vegemite label handsome?

wilter, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

colour: because they all look dégueulasse

wilter, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

there needs to be a best mailer's pet posing with a jar category.

estela, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

i am so happy to have successfully mailed the vegemite, at times i doubted my abilities.

estela, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

YOU DID GOOD!

who are our judges? me and lxy and remy and lingbert? what night? Wednesday would work well for me.

jergïns, Monday, 12 May 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

you can show lingbert what my dog looks like, i believe he will like him, he seems to have a soft spot for woolly fools.

our overseas spreadables have all arrived!

are you free this wednesday for an evening of adventure?

lxy, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

I will so be there.

remy bean, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

wilter, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

yay, remy!

text to ligbert:

tasting party wednesday; you in?

(because i am impatient.)

lxy, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

you guys should have fifth party present to perform a blind test so there is no bias...

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

a blind (double-blind? is that what they call it?) taste test is a good idea

jergïns, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

i emailed the windowsill photo to f. at work and he wrote back 'Yeechh!!!', i'm pretty sure he thinks they should all come last-equal.

estela, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 04:35 (seventeen years ago)

linbert?
ligbert?
what kind of talk is this.

estela, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 04:39 (seventeen years ago)

she always misspells lingbert for some reason.

also, i am going to taste the hell out of those 3 repulsive looking things.

Lingbert, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 04:58 (seventeen years ago)

also, i was unaware of a dog photo, but i will report back once i've seen it.

p.s. did you know that neither lxy nor jergins likes dogs? jergins once even said "i hate dogs." it's tragic.

Lingbert, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:00 (seventeen years ago)

oh dear oh dear ;_;

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

rr, i think i might not have told the ear biting story at this juncture.

so glossy and sappy <3<3<3

estela, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:10 (seventeen years ago)

Aw, dogs are cute and I like them, but they are also a ton of work.

A lot of people who don't like dogs have had bad experiences with a dog at sometime... could that be it?

p.s. bella is v. v. cute!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:11 (seventeen years ago)

i was going to say that the explanation is that they are both demonspawn, but i think even demons like dogs

Lingbert, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:25 (seventeen years ago)

i'm sorry. i didn't mean to unleash this maelstrom of sadness on itr.

Lingbert, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'm gobsmacked.

wilter, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

A lot of people who don't like dogs have had bad experiences with a dog at sometime... could that be it?

I think this is it. Also ppl who are just scared of them. Also neat freaks who think they are dirty and disgusting.

Nick, don't try it

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't tried it yet, Mark C, but it does look really nasty. "beef extract." what does that even mean. i will find out tomorrow.

Mark C, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

Why OH Why all the extractering?

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

it's been pointed out before, but the Marmite on display in the pic up there is the NZ version (sweetened with caramel and honey), not the original and best

braveclub, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

yeast extract sounds nasty too

Lingbert, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

the point was to try the NZ version, thus the sending and and not purchasing locally.

lxy, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

I am confused by all the extracts, but the jars really do look cute on that shelf.

Jaffas? Rubyredd mentioned those motherfuckers earlier.

They are good (if they are jaffas).

xp

jergïns, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

i sent the darrell lea version, i love them even more than original jaffas, though normally i don't like darrell lea stuff very much. they are bigger than jaffas and the chocolate is nicer. you should try them, wilter, if you haven't already, they are my #1 movie candy choice.

so am i, this is it, the moment of, i hope, truth.

it would be funny if you shot lingbert with a licorice bullet at the tasting party, now i really wish i had sent some.

estela, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

i would slingshot orange candies at him, but i don't want to waste any

(nesquik because we don't have milo)

lxy, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:21 (seventeen years ago)

Oh god, they're so different tho.

wilter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

marmite label's a bit busy innit?

wilter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

i don't really know what milo is, so i just guessed. should we not dunk into nesquik?

lxy, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:25 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah you should for sure.

wilter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

wait what are you dunking into it?

wilter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

the busy marmite label is to distract attention away from its terrible flavour, it's like someone with a cold sore wearing a bright coloured scarf.

estela, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

there is zero tradition of dunking vegemite into beverages.

estela, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

that is outrageous

wilter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

some saboteur has been giving serving suggestions.

estela, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

marmite+vogels toast+tons of butter+ dipped in milky milo= HAPPINESS

jergins just came in with a bunch of good liquor, so:

1. i may not need milo
2. i am already happy

kraft singles are bad on anything, so i don't think i will be consuming them with any of the international foodstuffs tonight.

Lingbert, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

when you get to the describing marmite part of the evening don't forget that the english language includes 'pungent' and 'dank' among its many adjectives.

Mark C, Thursday, 15 May 2008 11:57 (seventeen years ago)

a scoreboard that says M vegemite B marmite V bovril followed by adding mistakes is not a scoreboard i can take too seriously.

estela, Thursday, 15 May 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

So who exactly are you calling a cheat, Lxy, Lingbert or Jergins?

Mark C, Thursday, 15 May 2008 12:34 (seventeen years ago)

even though she wasn't there, and even though i <3 her, i am inclined to blame rubitchredd for this entire fiasco.

estela, Thursday, 15 May 2008 12:40 (seventeen years ago)

how do people eat that shit on a daily basis? they were tolerably bad upon first smell and taste, but then the aftertaste and the....aftersmell? WOULD NOT GO AWAY. the longer i sat there, the more i wanted to keep lowering my scores. eventually i just gave up. i tried to kill the aftertaste with joffas and beer, but nothing worked. as for the ability to linger, all 3 foodstuffs are champs.

my description of the smell and taste was something like "yeasty nursing home and asshole."

Lingbert, Thursday, 15 May 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

btw my #1 actually ended up being vegemite somehow. it wasn't a clear winner in my head, more just that it happened to end up having the most points.

Lingbert, Thursday, 15 May 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

btw estela the expression on your dog's face was perfect for what was sitting in front of it.

also, the line "so i hit him in the face with a vegemite sandwich" doesn't sound so comical anymore. gross.

Lingbert, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

So none of you actually liked any of the spreads? Maybe John Justen will come to Bovril's rescue.

Mark C, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

I reckon real Marmite would have come last first.

braveclub, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

I can't even eat twiglets any more, they're just nasty.

Mark C, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

remy liked bovril

lol "real marmite" oh boy can't wait to try it

Lingbert, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

but seriously, thanks to all who sent stuff. it was gross, but now i know. joffas are pretty good, though.

Lingbert, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

i liked the potential of bovril. the execution was ... well, significantly better than that of vegemite/marmite. i kept eating it though, in the same guilty and perverse fashion in which i dip crackers in the oil that comes atop peanut butter. it seems like it would be a wonderful ingredient for a molecular gastronomer.

remy bean, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

vegemite was decent (if too salty) but the aftertaste lingered and lingered and lingered. neither whiskey nor soda nor water nor bread could clear it from my palate. i left my big scorecard at the lxy/jergz compound, but i believe i described the appearance as 'bloody boogers' and the taste as 'sweat from a dehydrated arab's scrotum'

remy bean, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

marmite did not lead one to create crude, lewd, biological metaphors, just imparted sensation of eating something muddy, british, and very very old. like the schmutz that might've gotten stuck on the bottom of James Herriot's wellingtons.

remy bean, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Cheers Remy, and I'm glad you liked it!

Mark C, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

i think i had it years ago, on top of ice cream, on a dare.

remy bean, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

my stomach still feels weird

jergïns, Thursday, 15 May 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i have had an interesting day today ... gastronomically.

remy bean, Thursday, 15 May 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

how do people eat that shit on a daily basis?

I pretty much do ;_;

wilter, Thursday, 15 May 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

HOW

jergïns, Thursday, 15 May 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

par example this morning I ate it on 1 crumpet (bcz there were crumpets in the fridge at work)
Also normally on toast or on crackers. ca depend.

estela, Thursday, 15 May 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

You guys did spread the bovril as per my instructions, right?

Mark C, Thursday, 15 May 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

mark c, i think we like each other now. bovril was like the suture to our ilx wounds.

remy bean, Friday, 16 May 2008 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

that makes me happy!

estela, Friday, 16 May 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i hope you guys remembered to use it sparingly.... vegemite i've noticed can be put on thicker, but marmite has to be minimal. you should try it with cheese and lettuce on bread.

Rubyredd, Friday, 16 May 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

it is also excellent as bait for eels when applied to rancid meat.

Rubyredd, Friday, 16 May 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not really into eels atm though.

wilter, Friday, 16 May 2008 02:42 (seventeen years ago)

but rancid meat is ok?

electricsound, Friday, 16 May 2008 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

eels seem to approve of it. and rotten eggs.

Rubyredd, Friday, 16 May 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

Remy, I'm happy with that. Sorry again for being a dick.

So, John Justen, looking forward to your input on this topic!

estela, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

I am looking forward to hearing the results of this v. v. important test.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

lol i am not, i have actually only met one american ever who liked vege/mar/mite, everyone else has been uniformly scathing about them.

estela, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't met any non-antipodeans who like it either.

wilter, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

Hmmmm - the person I stayed with on Friday night expressed a preference for one over the other, and didn't say she hated either! (Her husband had Australian snacks in the cupboard, and that is how we got to talking about international snack foods...). Anyway, R0bbi3 is an American! So there are a few of them out there.

Also, I truly believe John will eat or drink anything now. With the possible exceptions of tofu and Hardee's curly fries.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 18 May 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

we're having a cocktail party this evening.

do i set out the marmite and vegemite and bovril to see if anyone takes the challenge, or do i leave them in the cupboard to moulder in peace?

Sara R-C, Sunday, 18 May 2008 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

Sara, don't make me send you some Bovril...

Mark C, Monday, 19 May 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

Mark C, I don't fear your empty threats!

Sara R-C, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

My lack of fear may be due to the fact that I have lost the key to my mailbox, however.

Sara R-C, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

QUICK RANKINGS - MORE LATER

WINNER: BOVRIL
2ND PLACE: NOT EATING
3RD PLACE: BARELY EDGED BY VEGEMITE
4TH: MARMITE

in many ways i found it difficult to distinguish marmite and vegemite - bovril though was pretty good

i am the only one of our testers that feels this way though

John Justen, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

Can I petition to have the thread title changed to "BOVRIL RULZ" etc?

Mark C, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

remy, bless him, pocketed the bovril

jergïns, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

i even dipped my finger in it on the way home. so did rrrickey, and up to the knuckle.

remy bean, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

HI DERE OUT OF CONTEXT THREAD

HI DERE, Monday, 19 May 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

I was in the supermarket in the "international" section and they had a product that looked exactly like Bovril, same bottle and font I think, but it ws called something else.

Plz explain, Mark C. Is it export Bovril because Bovril is such a bad name??

wilter, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

As far as I can tell Bonox is the Aussie equivalent, but it is in a vegemite-style jar rather than Bovril-style, being also made by Kraft.

Or was it Oxo Spread?

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/20/72451728_82995dce8d.jpg

Mark C, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

p.s. that is not the real (or at least British) Bovril label.

Mark C, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

I can't remember, I might buy it.

wilter, Monday, 19 May 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

While I appreciate reading the rankings (LOL at "NOT EATING"), I would like to see scorecards and photographs, please, Mr. Justen.

Dick King Smith?

Mark C, Thursday, 22 May 2008 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

uptoeleven Nick, what do you think of Bovril?

Mark C, Friday, 23 May 2008 10:27 (seventeen years ago)

I *think* i like it but my experiences have been mostly confined to the terraces of various football grounds in winter months. I don't think this is an entirely fair test as I'm going to be in love with anything cockles-warming in such nads-shrinking situations.

I can say with confidence, however, that both marmite and vegemite be GROSS. Bovril pwns by default but I shall test it under climate-controlled conditions this weekend and report back.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 23 May 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

Smashing - don't forget, good white bread, lightly toasted, generously buttered, with Bovril spread thinly and eaten while still hot. Man, I wonder if I can arrange for this to be my lunch?

Mark C, Friday, 23 May 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

I should have a party where all of the finger food is made of marmite/vegemite/bovril.

HI DERE, Friday, 23 May 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

do you hate your guests?

jergïns, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

i bought some bovril yesterday and i had some on toast first, then in a hot drink, and i liked both (i'd realised i couldn't remember it very well because it had been such a long time). i still prefer vegemite on toast but bovril is better for drinking. also, i hate marmite.

estela, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

hey i hate marmite too!

jergins, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

jergins, Thursday, 15 October 2009 03:24 (fifteen years ago)

xxp that stuff is impossible to spread lightly, way too thick. the bovril spread beter than the other two. maybe travelling over the IDL made them congeal? changing hemispheres caused some kind of hardening reaction?

"i find your antics mirthful and infectious" (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 15 October 2009 03:31 (fifteen years ago)

Wait, I misread you as saying you thought vegemite was revolting. Scratch my last remark from the record!

ceci n'est pas une pipecock (Trayce), Thursday, 15 October 2009 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

New Zealand Marmite is described as having a "weaker" or "less rancid" flavour than the British version.

DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Thursday, 15 October 2009 05:03 (fifteen years ago)

Which suggests that New Zealand Marmite *is* rancid, just less so than the Pommie version.

"i find your antics mirthful and infectious" (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 15 October 2009 05:04 (fifteen years ago)

Please note: Vegemite has been rancid-free since 1923.

estela, Friday, 26 February 2010 11:22 (fifteen years ago)

i ate some marmite recently, i was in wellington and i thought with <3 of you, justin3, and decided i would give it a fair go in the spirit of that deep and abiding <3, but sadly it tasted like puke.

I looked into this and these results are in fact correct

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 22:01 (one year ago)

H.P, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 22:03 (one year ago)

Look at the map above: Vegemite wins on land conquered.

H.P, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 22:05 (one year ago)

I got really mad the other day because Anne Reardon did a bit on Vegemite and I usually love her stuff but she hates Vegemite and she ragged on it for a whole episode and said no one likes it unless theyre brought up with it from childhood, then proceeded to show a bunch of foreigners trying it straight from a fucking spoon. NO.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 5 March 2024 22:07 (one year ago)

H.P, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 22:11 (one year ago)

But yeah Trayce, it's pretty egregious how non-vegemiter's go about trying Vegemite. Hate those "eating a spoon of vegemite" sort of vids

You're all wrong, the correct answer is peanut butter

octobeard, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 23:28 (one year ago)

An (American) friend used to insist that vegemite and marmite were both just solid soy sauce, I once made the mistake of trying to argue about this, then swore not to ever engage in any marmite or vegemite discussions ever again.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 5 March 2024 23:42 (one year ago)

What you should have taken from that experience is not to argue with an American again

H.P, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:00 (one year ago)

Reminds me of another argument I had with another American friend when we went to a restaurant and he asked for "Worshestershire" sauce and I did an involuntary laugh. NB: I am from Worcester.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:05 (one year ago)

School me, I've grown up saying "wis-ter-sher" sauce with the accent on the "Wis". I think I've got the syllables right? but have a feeling the accent is off

H.P, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:09 (one year ago)

I know it says "Worcestershire" on the label but I've only heard it called "Worcester sauce" IRL, which is /ˈwʊstər/ "WOOS-ter"

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:12 (one year ago)

Anyway no judgement, it is an annoying spelling, but he was annoyed at me for laughing and then told me that I was the one pronouncing it incorrectly.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:13 (one year ago)

Wait till you hear how I used to pronounced Leicester in primary school

H.P, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:19 (one year ago)

Funny story though! Looking forward to smuggly correcting my families pronunciation next steak night. Thanks for the tip

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 01:02 (one year ago)

I have never tried Vegemite. It is quite lacking in aesthetic appeal.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 01:04 (one year ago)

I have never tried vegemite, it is quite lacking in availability over here - I'm sure you can get it if you really want. I'd be interested to compare it to marmite, which I neither love nor hate.

I presume pronouncing it like 'yosemite' is a hoary old gag.

gene besserit (ledge), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 09:36 (one year ago)

They did have a big push on Vegemite in the UK maybe 30 years ago? It never really took because all right thinking Britishes said, no thanks, we'll stick with Marmite, it's much nicer.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 09:52 (one year ago)

yes that would probably be about right - my mum got some and that was our exact reaction to it

+1 for "Worcester sauce", no "shire". label be damned. I worked in the Lea & Perrins factory as a temp in the 90s, the smell put me off the stuff for a couple of years

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 09:57 (one year ago)

IIRC from my one trip to the UK in the 90s, Marmite is... sweeter? Like its still savoury but not as briskly savoury as Vegemite is.
