u2 is one of the worst bands in the world (sorry sara)

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

awesome idea but i gotta sb you for the u2 thing

10/11 of a dead jesus (darraghmac), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

hating on u2 is just pointless they wrote some good songs and some bad songs and they seem like quite reprehensible people that seems to sum it up

i'm sorry for whatever (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not offended; originally I tried to refuse the tickets! It's impossible to fight against Teh Husband AND Teh Ex. I had a good time at the concert, they aren't my favorite, but it was fine.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

a friend in the know told me they basically have an extra band that hides under the stage and fills the sound out, plus a little guy who runs about triggering the Edge's pedals for him

i'm sorry for whatever (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

frogbs, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

u2

iatee, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

Is it about like, whether they are "good" or if they "suck"? because I think they're alright. not the greatest band in the world, but also not the worst. I used to like them, but I kind of like them now.

frogbs, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

^^^basically how I feel

I like some of their songs, don't care about other ones. Some of their songs I like because they remind me of a particular event ("Mysterious Ways" will always bring to mind the insane 24 hour drive to the pro-choice march in 1992 for me, for example).

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

10/11 of a dead jesus (darraghmac), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

Disappointing lack of rain that weekend, as I recall, but we did have some lolz because of drinking too much coffee and not having good places to stop for a bathroom break.

When U2 played in Glasgow a couple of years ago Bono stood on stage snapping his fingers and said, every time I snap my fangers astarving child somewhere in the world dies. Someone in the crowd shouted, Well stop snapping your fingers then you sick bastard.

xxp would take that a lot more seriously if it wasn't coming from someone who bought a first class plane ticket for his hat. Like most bands, U2 have some good tunes, some bad tunes. But it's Bono's 'saving the world single handed' thing I can't abide.

Hysterically Hardcore (snoball), Thursday, 11 August 2011 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

it really helps if you live under a rock and thus can live in blissful ignorance of that sort of thing

Sara R-C, Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

there is always a bunch of ILM people that overly judge a song by the lyrics and then say something like "the tune isn't so hot either". These people are backwards. Lyrics should come second

stop listening to the lyrics so much. you're ruining music (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

yes but what does that have to do with Bono

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

BTW this is the single worst piece of criticism written by anyone anywhere, and when I read it I was already thinking "Christ, fuck U2" after Rattle and Hum came out and then I read this and figured I need not trust Robert Hilburn, who I had only just learned about, on anything for the future. In retrospect this was one of the smartest decisions I've ever made.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of can't believe he is referring to Bono as "Hewson"

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

I can. All too clearly.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

If U2 has an artistic Achilles' heel, it may be its eagerness to live up to what it sees as the idealism and integrity of rock's finest moments. The danger is that the band may look to critics as the arbiter of rock 'n' roll honor and begin second-guessing itself in view of the sharp critical disagreement over the band's latest step; instead of pursuing its own artistic impulses, it could end up weakening its vision in hopes of seeking some sort of consensus approval.

okay even at the time this is like the dumbest possible thing anyone could say about U2; the fact that the next thing U2 released was Achtung, Baby just makes it worse

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Thursday, 11 August 2011 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

Oh I forgot -- best detail is that in the original print run of that piece when I read it, it was accompanied by a black and white line drawing showing Bono standing at the fork in the road on a desert highway or something, himself split in two as he deeply pondered on WHICH WAY HE SHOULD TAKE OH THE ART.

also can I just point out that invoking "stylistic" as a defense for one form of terrible, terrible singing over the other essentially says "I have no defensible argument, I just like one more than the other"

also no one abused vowels more than homegirl from The Cranberries

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

nah i disagree with that, grunge specifically presented the singer as some sort of auteur, and lots of people hold up people like eddie vedder as great technical singers - nobody is saying that about henry rollins.

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

cranberries otm tho.

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

also there isnt really a punk vocal style per se, unless you wanna get into intangibles like snarl or attitude or fake englishmen or some other such bullshit - but grunge does have this sorta central baritone except when they try to hit notes they cant chewy sorta character to it

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

no one on Earth who has any conception of how singing works thinks any of the grunge singers are great technical singers

some of them had very strong senses of pitch (hi dere Kurt Cobain) but the early 00s spawn they inspired (aside from dude in Staind) are all actually much better singers, like for example I'm never going to by a Chad Kroger/Nickelback CD but I am fully prepared to say he's a better singer than any of the grunge heyday folks except possibly the dudes in Alice In Chains (whom I only caveat because I only know one song of theirs that I haven't heard in literally a decade)

DALEKS OF GOD (DJP), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

when arguments like "the grunge guys were all amazing singers with great technique" come around, it makes me weep for how poor music education in this country is

being able to growl in tune does not make you a great singer

I would say he is a great singer, personally; a little nasal at times in his technique but it's a very distinctive, evocative sound (if not the most flexible, but then again he's not doing a lot that requires being nimble)

Something about Kreyashawn's voice is nails-on-chalkboard to me. Like, if she were somewhere merely talking to her friends in that voice, I would have to leave the room.

listening to Screamadelica for the first time in about... 18 years?

I don't hate "Movin' On Up" as much as I used to, but I still hate it.

"Slip Inside This House" is still awesome tho

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

i am going to mention for the 500th time in my life that there are various tracks from this album in the early 90s cindy crawford workout video
pretty sure the warm up was "movin on up" but not sure iirc

MUSICAL CHOICE is not the usual instrumental used in most videos; her choice is similar to her other video. Credits of musical selections are listed at the end, most songs performed by Primal Scream, Seal contributes "Crazy", "Ice" by Daniel Lanois, "State of Shock" Revenge and "Dis Moi Dis Moi" by Mitsou. It's unique and refreshing.

ha I did something similar around 2000 with the Napster explosion, and even then there were bands I really should have been totally up on years earlier whose catalogs I only really started EXPLORING like, 3-4 years ago (example: zomg Siouxsie and the Banshees have albums besides Peepshow, Tinderbox, Hyaena and Superstition??? WHO KNEW oh wait, everybody knew that)

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

aero likes to talk about how Sisters of Mercy became terrible when they started releasing albums; I maintain that they became different and that this moody, atmopsheric, thumping song is a fantastic example of why they shouldn't be written off. most of this stuff seems to me to be about submerging yourself in stasis so that the initial adrenaline rush washes over you in continuous waves mixed in with shifting into a mindset where you are really focusing on minute shifts in the pattern sequencing rather than the overall structure, which can come across very easily as two measures of drum pattern repeated for 10 minutes

Rusko really makes me *eternal sadface*

he's got this great starting track called "Somebody To Love" that starts out as old-school UK hardcore/breakbeat and sounds like it's going to be a total sunny throwback, and then it just WALLOWS in this lumpen unenergetic dubstep fart beat and it's just fucking terrible

like, just don't do the dubstep bullshit and you'd be amazing! the only time it really worked for you was "Hammertime"

77 - moody spookfest that seems to have a less soprano kate bush quality to it, inobtrusive autotuney nonsense that doesn't really need to be here. until we get to the chorus and then we get a batshit load of it that i don't want/need. def not anywhere near the other stuff i have heard by her.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:03 (twelve years ago)

dude you should have voted

also come post on that thread, we could use a good shriekfest

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)

75. chromatics - cut rate m83 with a female vocal? maybe a grower? i dont like it. something of an ignorable 90s 4ad vibe going on.

75. alunageorge - i dig this, although there is a little more baby voice going on than i prefer, i dont need cutesy signifiers. something i wouldnt turn off, but not something i would spend a lot of time with.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

those people scare me and i am at the most casually invested in any of this tho

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

74. andres - innocuous. odd to imagine people getting really excited about this. ever. makes me think of the soundtrack you would get in those "Minds Eye" early computer graphic film compilations. this would be the one where you were a poorly rendered bird flying over a jungle island landscape.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)

be ready to say that about half of the things ppl voted for; the 2010s are really becoming an age where everyone wants the edges sanded off of their music

otm :(

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:20 (twelve years ago)

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)

73. javiera mena - what happened i was napping i think a lady might have done a downtempo cover of Bailamos

71. pulp - before i heard this i was really looking forward to making a "haha no one listens to pulp anymore do they". and now i can.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)

dropping a dissonant track into an ILM end of year countdown thread is akin to saying something nice about the working class at the dowager countess' table.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:24 (twelve years ago)

i did post something abt the icona pop song on the main thread, because that seemed less irritating than me showing up with my insights on stuff that showed up 2400 posts ago

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:28 (twelve years ago)

I find it completely inconceivable that ppl actually dig that song

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

71. g-dragon - this might be ok if this dude would shut the fuck up but i think that is just because then it would basically be pon de floor

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)

70. ty dolla $ign - this is boring altho the mix of how hilariously fucking not ok the lyrics are juxtaposed with the bland ass song is fun i guess

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:39 (twelve years ago)

haha that description actually got me to play the G-Dragon track; I'd been skipping the Youtube-only selections

Ty Dolla $ign is a blight in terms of lack of talent and how thoroughly boring he manages to be despite the egregious misogyny

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:41 (twelve years ago)

its kind of startling. not good but startling

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:42 (twelve years ago)

69. future - man idgi, theres nothing going on here that strikes me, and it just sounds so fucking lazy, and its been done better over and over before

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:43 (twelve years ago)

welcome to hip-hop in 2012, where being fucking boring and ratchet as hell are positives

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:44 (twelve years ago)

bad call naming yourself future and then delivering by the numbers nothingness. still probably my favorite thing so far. thats not good.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:44 (twelve years ago)

I was actually kind of blase about "Beez in the Trap" until I heard it come right after Future and was all "oh thank God"

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:45 (twelve years ago)

i thought g-dragon ranking was funny because ilm hates dubstep but apparently if you put goofy korean rapping on top of it it's suddenly ok

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:50 (twelve years ago)

double shot of nicki minaj huh

68. - laid back is not nickis forte, and it really shows on this track. please let something happen some time in this song ffs aggh this 2 chainz dude sucks uggghhh

67. - ok i know this song and im not listening to it again, i fucking hate hate hate the chorus, but that is set in stark relief to the totally different way i hate the verses

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 20:54 (twelve years ago)

those people scare me too

66. dawn richard - ok i remember really liking dawn richard, but i am just not really feeling this song that much? its def not bad, and i could see it being something that might really step up its game listening it more, although i am sick to death of the ascending synth line schtick this year. might need some more time with this.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 23:14 (twelve years ago)

65. japandroids - sub against me! yowl rock, done a million times better by at least 40 bands that are playing in shitty bars in your hometown right now.

64. guru - at least this is interesting right off the bat, and now that i am aways in, its heads above everything up until now. not in my general wheelhouse but yeah i could see working this into rotation. yep, this is pretty good, will be returning to it for sure.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

see i dont hate everything! just most of this list so far

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 January 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

so OTM

only if you're down with dumbfounded incredulity at your fellow ilmers

how's life, Friday, 25 January 2013 00:48 (twelve years ago)

63. donkie punch & lorenzo - i kept jumping around on youtube thinking i was stumbling onto the same terrible basement remix of this song, but it appears this is actually the original. wtf

62. nick hannam and a bunch of other people - this is an ok meh limp house track i suppose but theres gotta be better stuff in this vein i imagine. ugh who is this second idiot. yck. this dude is awful why is this happening

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 25 January 2013 00:53 (twelve years ago)

62 could be mediocre ok if it was just the lady and none of this terrible guy

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 25 January 2013 00:54 (twelve years ago)

61. tame impala - is this another animal collective spin off? its not the worst thing of the day but it is also nearly impossible to imagine people getting excited about it

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 25 January 2013 00:56 (twelve years ago)

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Friday, 25 January 2013 15:34 (twelve years ago)

haha i know that song so i can predict that my response would be

-how is it possible that ILM stops just short of suggesting that jessie j should be stabbed to death in a back alley somewhere and then vote this to spot 54 on its end of year list

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 25 January 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)

hahahahaha yesssss

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Friday, 25 January 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

its good to finally know the artist name because i honestly spent half the year wondering who had convinced jessie j that a half-assed nicki minaj impression on the chorus was a good move.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 25 January 2013 16:23 (twelve years ago)

60. keith fullerton whitman - holy crap i love this. a lot.
59. haim forever - so this is basically dumbed down bored out tune yards meh hot garbage. booooooring. it brings out sort of a special place of hatred from me. irrational yes but god i really really hate this.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:45 (twelve years ago)

How does Haim remind you of tuneyards??

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

the same way foster the people reminds me of mgmt, it just seems like the blippy vocal punctuation and the quirky boppy almost subsaharan rhythm and guitar lines have some shared lineage, but done so much less compellingly.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:48 (twelve years ago)

i mean point of ref there would be "the bizness" to "forever" i guess - the quirky luaka bop vibe without anything behind it. idk.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:50 (twelve years ago)

58. angel haze - pretty much had me from the word go, love the track, love the little captured inhalations in the way she is recorded, same sorta O_O reaction i had when i first "212", but with more lasing power i think and less minajisms. chorus is fucking awesome, yeah this is killer top to bottom. thx ilx!

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:54 (twelve years ago)

hey before i get to 57, is this a remix of jaga jazzist, or am i on the wrong youtube or ?

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:56 (twelve years ago)

57. Mungolain Jetset - sounds like somebody spent a lot of time listening to SAW. not a bad thing necc, and its getting more interesting as it goes, i was worried i was going to spend 6 minutes in the intro loop there for a while. completely pleasant, but not what i am looking for.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago)

56. jessie ware running - ok first things first i have to stop trying to figure out what this bloopy synth intro reminds me of because that is driving me crazy. dont like this. this woman cant sing for shit, and sounds like she is using sade (who is good) to pass off a totally mediocre vocal. never mind, its not just mediocre, she is awful. cant wait to shut this off and skip to the next track OH NO

55. jessie ware wildest moments - background music might be better on this one, but she hasnt started singing yet so. i hate this less but oh man what the fuck she has srsly one of the most annoying vocal characters and its just so dull.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 19:31 (twelve years ago)

hmm, I have successfully avoided both Fester the Peehole and MGMT to the point where I think I only halfway get the link you're making; I'd have leaned way more in the direction of "The Bangles cover Pink" for Haim comparisons

also I have no idea what Jaga Jazzist is or which Angel Haze Youtube you were looking at

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

54. cher lloyd - weve covered this already

53. hot chip - cant find a non-live youtube of this and its hot chip so i dont care to try very hard

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)

you're gonna get to saint etienne and braek my heart w/yr revulsion

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 19:46 (twelve years ago)

I was very pleasantly surprised by Saint Etienne! (not enough to, you know, actually listen to the album, but I liked it more than the general "oh this is nice" reaction I've had to most of their material)

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

i was thinking a st et/pet shop boys split EP where they each cover two songs by the other band would be the most amazing thing in the world.

52. grimes - seems to start up with sort of a "enya got into the liquor cabinet again" woozy tunelessness, but we'll give it some time. probably should avert my eyes from the video because its next level annoying, and that shouldnt really count against it. ok intro is over, and musically it seems like it could go somewhere ok maybe, and yay the vocals dont seem to suck, until oh my god they sure do. the gauzy 4ad tm vocal side was ok, but the bleaty shit going on here is a huge misstep. theres something there i can get behind, but an unfortunate tendency to go cutesy at all the wrong spots. i am still half into it though? but the half i dont like is reaaaaaaaally irritating.

crüt, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:07 (twelve years ago)

51. burial - jesus man 11.5 minutes? appealing darkness and off kilter shit going on right away, massive tricky attack something, finally something with an actual active beat, digging the destructo garble nastiness, meh shut up vocals no need for you (mitigated slightly as we go, but i request an instrumental version if at all possible) liking the manipulated vocals that are rolling out now better, god the fact that this is so refreshingly abrasive has to say something abt everything up until now (and ha its not even really that abrasive in my world of old people but you know). another bright spot, why is there not more music like this in the countdown idgi.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)

despite the length, listened to all of burial fyi. that makes 4 things so far? guru, keith fullerton etc, angel haze, and now burial.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)

burial might just maybe slightly overstay its welcome, but not if i was in a diff environment ie not listening to youtubes at work

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

that track is the first time something by Burial actually clicked for me, which as you say does say a lot about the stuff that had placed up to that point

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

4ad has been pretty busy huh.

50. twin shadow - spoken word intro what the fuck is this the silver mt. zion? do they quit this ever? come the fuck on. oh wait i take it all back, i would rather listen to dumb spoken word than mumbly joe here. you ever have a song that just makes you instantly disinterested, yeah this is that.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 21:04 (twelve years ago)

49. santigold - haha i know this song already and i didnt realize who it was. good shit, and again, refreshingly busy without being stupid. dont dig it as much as her earlier stuff but still, its solid.

48. purity ring - i already knew this one also, but this is doing right exactly what so much of the other smoothy 4adish stuff on the list does totally wrong - you can make things that are audibly pretty and pleasing without sucking all the life out of them. fantastic.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:25 (twelve years ago)

Correct me if I am wrong but I think I played both of those for you last time I was MN?

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:28 (twelve years ago)

47. haim dont save me - ugh what does anyone ever see in this band, this is so completely average and inert and at the same time grating and poorly made. is this the 2013 version of fawning over those crappy early taylor swift records? incomprehensible

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:29 (twelve years ago)

45. alex anwandter - this is fairly light and enjoyable, appeals to me in the same way that other semi-retrolectro stuff does, but im def not knocked out by it

44. spiritualized - coming to this biased because i have never understood what all the fuss is about, but ill give it a shot - its better than i remember other stuff by them but idk jingle jangle dylan/reedisms not my thing. theres something else there thats more spot on but i cant quite place it right now. it kind of reminds me of a brit-pop Cracker, and thats not good.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I don't get spiritualized love at all

Garth Brooks In ... The Life of (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 31 January 2013 19:57 (twelve years ago)

43. john talabot feat pional - grabbing me straight off, neat build and nice stacking of elements, not crazy about the vocals except when they do the harmony explodo thing which is really nice actually, again this seems like my kind of audio wallpaper or w/e compared to a lot of the other sorta laconic stuff up until now. mainly because it keeps moving a bit more, progressing or whatever instead of comfortably settling in, but without losing focus. yeah i really like this, i am down.

42. nicki minaj stupid hoe - somewhere along the line nicki (who was always pretty fucking halfway to grating, but in a sorta refreshing way in the beginning) just turned up all of her little quirks to a volume where it is like someone SHOUTING AT YOU ALL THE TIME and this is prob the biggest dip into that w/o incorporating her patented and now i will sing for a little while and like a little kid telling you the same plot of a pokemon episode over and over again it seems cute and you feel like you should be nice but its actually really fucking annoying by the tenth time.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:03 (twelve years ago)

tbh I think "Roman's Revenge" and "Stupid Hoe" are the only Nicki songs I really need in my life (honorable mention to "Beez in the Trap" and "Come on a Cone" I guess)

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:07 (twelve years ago)

41. neneh cherry and the thing - neneh cherry is never not a badass, and this is no exception, def like the moments of tortured sax more than some of the safer stuff but yeah very cool interplay going on here, the sneaking harshness in between phrases, this unsettling feeling of hearing something pretty but also dark and dirty and weirder than it seems at first, fucking fantastic

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

i am honestly worried abt listening to this miguel track because i feel like he is sort of a cause celebre on ilx atm and i dont want to get murdered in my sleep.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

i havent heard it yet so maybe it will be totally badass? idk. spooky out there

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

40. miguel - ok its really good. i spend less of my time these days w/rnb than i probably should, but i know enough to hear something solid in pretty much every way, and this does that. great singer with an admirable knowledge of how to use his chops, very smooth but not in a negative sense - pretty much all the parts are set into motion and it does everything right, although theres a dreaminess and lushness to the background that takes away from the center just a little bit.

had a pretty good run here for a while, wondering what will be the next thing to fuck that up entirely

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

yeah Miguel is the real deal IMO

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:21 (twelve years ago)

haha never mind found it

39. cheryl-t - the first bit of this would have been left on the 140+ bpm cutting room floor, and it just gets worse from there. theres a little something cool with the distorto bass synth stuff at the 1:30 mark but then its right back into the filling time while the dj has a smoke break vibe and yeah idgi

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:26 (twelve years ago)

38. deathgrips - haha is this a push it breath sample in the beginning oh never mind here goes the song, wait srsly is this a slowed down push it sample? thats kind of awesome, but this is pretty weak sauce from these dudes other than that, i still like it but its nowhere near takyon and oh god i just realized that more than anything this reminds me of chuck mosely from faith no more hahahaha oh no i can never unhear that now

rrrrrreally interested in your opinion on Partition

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:17 (eleven years ago)

76. Partition - much much better, im down with beyonce channeling missy elliot dipped in a light MIA sauce i guess. middle portion that starts with her saying drop the partition fast and some other stuff pretty much loses the plot although not completely at least. at times the production sounds a little like the third wacky remix that would show up on the CD maxi single. sorta falls apart at the end imo. big time diminishing returns here. still better than that first one, because no jay-z and the dude who wrote the beat doesn't sound like he's reading the fruity loops manual for the first time with his other hand while programming.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:20 (eleven years ago)

for me, this is "sneezed on the beat and the beat got sicker" vs "driver roll up the partition please, I don't need you seeing 'Yonce on her knees"

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:22 (eleven years ago)

im making a pledge to try to listen to the entire song here but fuck that with haim

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:33 (eleven years ago)

the really good Haim song IMO is "Let Me Go"; this is another band I enjoy but am not rapturous over (and their songs that are straight-up Fleetwood Mac pastiche are kind of the end of the world)

74. rival dealer - burial - hah i have been talking all year to people who dont want to listen to me about the resurgence of industrolectroebm shit in pop music and for that i am sorry but this burial thing is so so on the mark for that that its hard for me to have a straight reaction to it honestly. i mean its def denser than the old stuff which seems to be the real growth stylewise from like idk a;grumh or w/e but its got the brooding thing down while being all whipneck fast and shit. i like it, mostly, speed limit 140+ presents sad harcore. or something. slice of life talky bits are dumb, they should cut that out.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:45 (eleven years ago)

back in the old days, this would also be 3 tracks instead of one long ass one.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:46 (eleven years ago)

i am buying the bardo pond LP based on recently hearing it. also i think the beyonce tracks are all pretty good individually but the album works best as a whole. i don't "get" haim.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 17:48 (eleven years ago)

im not trying to be shrieky! i just have opinions but i didnt vote and i always feel like a dick steamrolling in and being all "U R ALL STUPID THIS IS GARBAGE" on the main thread so i put this all here. and not that its all garbage. just that haim song.

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:01 (eleven years ago)

I didn't really get into the Bardo Pond covers single that much but the album they put out last year (Peace on Venus) is really really good if you're into that mode of sludgy psych rock. But LOL at people being like "WHAT THIS SONG IS 15 MINUTES LONG?" It's not like it's 1962, songs can be longer than three minutes now, we have the technology.

72. XO - beyonce - haha this is str8 up 80s soundtrack in the intro i keep expecting ally sheedy to suddenly smile through all that mop of hair or something, chorus has the dreaded modern indie background shouters thing but not in a fuck u all lumineers way, i like this more than the other stuff, wish it was a little more driven or something. sounds like a pink song sometimes, but not one of the good pink songs, the boring ones about all being friends and drinking champagne and getting through the tough times and stuff. theres still something here i like somewhat though. idk, none of this beyonce is measuring up to the beyonce i want.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:14 (eleven years ago)

"XO" is pretty great

100% agree with how the EOY makes ilm seem like a different place. NA otm about BP album too. I wouldn't have loved the Master Plan cover as much but I loooooooove the original and hearing it translated to one of my favorite styles (heavy lumbering dirge with hint of lightness) was a great musical moment for me.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:18 (eleven years ago)

Is it just me or does a scary amount of the stuff nominated and placing sound like 80s soundtracks and mall music?

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:18 (eleven years ago)

well, 80s soundtracks were awesome and I heard Santigold and MGMT at a TGIFridays last week so I think what you've generally described is known to most as "music"

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:19 (eleven years ago)

I hadn't heard any of the new Beyonce until this weekend when driving around I heard the second half of "XO" twice on the radio, both times coming in at the weird surfboard part. It doesn't seem like a very good song but Jay Z made me laugh and I liked when she got all growly and aggressive near the end.

71. raging lung - the knife - ok first things first if i glanced at this album cover i would expect it to be a halo benders k records thing, which i assume its not but hey. this is an ok knife track, not my favorite, not my least. is it bizarre to say i want it to be consistently weirder? i mean its obv weird, but mostly in the chorus/postchorus, verse is a little comfort zone. i mean to the extent that there is a verse. i am being a harsher critic here because i know this stuff so theres more comparison points. lots of early mid peter gabriel twinkling weirdness and wobbling bassline fun. its good. it would prob grow on me.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:25 (eleven years ago)

that said, this does overstay its welcome a bit i think.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:43 (eleven years ago)

oh whoops skipped whatever lulu james is one sec.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:44 (eleven years ago)

Oh I accidentally skipped that one too

it's okay?

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:49 (eleven years ago)

69. closer - lulu james - part of me likes this, but her voice is losing me, holy shit she should stay out of her upper vocal range omg that was bad. now shes spending more time in there. ick. can she not sing? she can not sing. not up there at least. pro tip, if you honk in your upper register, stay the fuck out of your upper register. wait, more of her range is sucking now. what is going on. aaaaggghhhh nooooo. damnit, this seemed promising for a short like 20 seconds but yeah nope can not get past her voice. oh and also its really really boring.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:49 (eleven years ago)

haha dan listen again, i think u will want to drop the same vocal hammer here

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:50 (eleven years ago)

haha thank you for saving me an update post

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:50 (eleven years ago)

she sounds like she is a quarter-step off the pitch almost the entire song

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:51 (eleven years ago)

i know it is so bizarre

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:52 (eleven years ago)

it actually does get worse right? or does it just build to a fever pitch of "oh you poor thing, stop"

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:52 (eleven years ago)

for me it was "this is an interesting affectation, it's bringing tension into an otherwise unremarkable song... okay ENOUGH OF THAT"

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:55 (eleven years ago)

idk her voice sounds fine to me

charitable remainder unitrust (crüt), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:56 (eleven years ago)

i'm a terrible singer though

charitable remainder unitrust (crüt), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:56 (eleven years ago)

it's not really her voice, it's that she is consistently slightly off the note, which starts out interesting and then starts making me grind my teeth

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:59 (eleven years ago)

67. merry go round - kacey musgraves - haha ok first of all from the intro i keep expecting a muppet to jump in and take a verse. the verses are oddly clever actually, esp for what i can only assume is a mainstream country deal. Her voice is sorta by the numbers album radio, but theres something actually kind of compelling. song writer is really pretty fantastic, manages to toe the line of clever and not too clever, like the round and round and round turn quite a bit. huh. i wish she was just a tad less innocuous, but theres nothing to fault here really. i am impressed, and fairly surprised. i dont think there is anything special here w/o the writer though, so unless she is the writer i am somewhat concerned, wouldn't mind a more compelling vocalist taking a stab at this really.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:00 (eleven years ago)

IIRC she is the writer

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:03 (eleven years ago)

basically I feel like she's the artist everyone keeps trying to convince me Taylor Swift is

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:03 (eleven years ago)

That's good, maybe she should just be that more

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:04 (eleven years ago)

She's quite an accomplished writer for other people too. Interesting to hear her version of Mama's Broken Heart back to back with Miranda Lambert's super-campy one.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:10 (eleven years ago)

66. Fall Back - Factory Floor - basically i just want this to turn into the telex song that it really wants to be, idk man i think i just like this sort of stuff with some weird german dude yammering over the top of it or robot voices and not with a bored sounding lady getting all breathily unenthused all over it. its...fine i guess?

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:16 (eleven years ago)

i am honestly really glad to hear that abt musgraves, shes really one hell of a writer

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:17 (eleven years ago)

judging from this one song i heard that one time on the internet lol @ me

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:18 (eleven years ago)

that's the CW about her so you're playing into an already-established narrative

she and Brandy Clark are kind of the go-to "authentic young country voices" of 2013 afaict

SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 19:19 (eleven years ago)

65. she will - savages - time travelling music, appreciate the unburied guitars, and just when i was abt to slog it off as retro masturbatory factory worship, in comes the drum break and moves it to something more than that. theres a lot of badassery going on here actually, motherfuckers know how to build, thats for sure. i dig it, old better pj harvey before she got all pleasant sounding filtered through JD/NO transition stages. im sure this will get pinged with the retro tag but honestly, i dont think thats fair, and also saddled with asshole female band novelty media blitz, but thats a huge misstep, its a really good band, who gives two fucks abt the fact that they happen to all be women (which implies the tokenism that undercuts women as musicians, which is a personal fucking sticking point being stuck in the lunkheaded industry i am in). stands 100% on its own merits, like thousands of other women populated groups that get dragged down by assholes making their gender the prime narrative, while leaving the unsaid bias against women in rock intact.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:11 (eleven years ago)

Not really about Savages, but the 'who gives a fuck if they're women' thing is a double-edged sword. Being in an all-female 6-piece we've had to talk about whether we put it into our blurbs or not, and we've so far decided that we should. Not for men, but for other women, because when you're growing up as a girl into male-dominated shit it's good to find that there are women out there doing what you want to do.

emil.y, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:20 (eleven years ago)

I mean, obviously there are plenty of women out there who won't give a shit either.

emil.y, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:21 (eleven years ago)

because when you're growing up as a girl into male-dominated shit it's good to find that there are women out there doing what you want to do.

definitely. I haven't heard any of the gender-based hype or backlash re Savages. They are pleasant to listen to in that they sound a lot like other music I like a lot, but Savages just makes me want to listen to said other music rather than them.

this is a really good point btw, and i would have less of a visceral reaction in general if 90% of where i hear it wasn't some jim derogatis type basically yelling "you'll never believe this, but all of the band is ACTUALLY WOMEN" every 4 sentences like its akin to finding a youtube where a chimp builds an endtable or something

The Wire - Haim - way less horrible than the other haim song, and actually fairly ok to listen to. Thankfully less bananarama this time (meaning better singing). Slightly confused as to why we need a saxophoneless Quarterflash in the 2013, but yeah, I don't mind this at all.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 17:45 (eleven years ago)

Something in the way he bends his voice on certain vowels maybe? Death grips guy having a better day drunk on White Russians and high on ludes? Ok. charitable remainder unitrust (crüt), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:19 (eleven years ago)

Closer - tegan and Sara - ok first let's start with the fact that people still caring about tegan and Sara strikes me the same way that a song by Lou Bega placing would, but hey that's just me. Weren't these the nasal harmony are they or aren't they deal from like 10 years ago? Canadian? Jesus man so much mall fodder muck showing up here, but this is similarly egregious to me. If this is the direction of pop you fuckers can have it. This is all because I'm old isn't it, def getting a "you fuckers don't understand I LIVED THROUGH IT THE FIRST TIME" vibe from lots of this list.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:26 (eleven years ago)

Hold on we're going home - drake - are u fucking kidding me

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:28 (eleven years ago)

True confession, I didn't even listen to the drake song. I'm sorry. That's unfair. But it's drake, so I'm sure that it's dull as shit and tepidly slow and yawn worthy, unless it's one of the ones where he does the "surprise everybody look out for fast drake!" In which case it's faster and still sucks, possibly more.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 18:32 (eleven years ago)

Strandbar - Todd terje- is there any reason for me not to just like listen to actual samba instead? To be fair, this is not my sort of stuff wrt electrowhatever, but it's def the best thing that's showed up in the rundown shuffle today. Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

I feel like is such a fine line between doing this well and doing it poorly, and most stuff falls on the other side. Are there problematic lyrical points well god yes, but hey I listen to eazy so I can hardly point fongers

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:32 (eleven years ago)

Ueneo - rocko - and then on the other hand. It's like a bunch of dudes listened to biggies slow rolling delivery and thought "oh hey I can take that all the way to super boring" and are all trying to out bland each other and yeah so I hate this. Oh look rick Ross what a goddamn surprise.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)

yep. it makes no sense to me that people rate it.

how's life, Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:38 (eleven years ago)

We can't stop - Miley Cyrus - pretty sure this would qualify for worst chorus of the year but then again Katy perry probably released something. This song is such a torpid shitbag. Far more horrible than any of the controversial stuff she did this year (ok maybe not worse that that mtv performance but still this lasts FOREVER)

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

one of my biggest shocks of 2013 was desultorily playing the A$AP Ferg album with the full expectation of hating it and liking it so much that I went out and bought it that day

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:40 (eleven years ago)

Echelon - angel haze - it's like someone took nicki minaj to a reeducation camp and taught her how not to suck. That's not even fair, because this has it's own thing going on but idk in some ways it reminds me of when minaj was a breath of fresh air, without all the trappings of awfulness, or hearing 212 for the first time. Whoa and just when I was going to say that it lacks a bit of the adventurousness, in comes the angel chorus and goddamn I am going to listen the shit out of this in the coming weeks. Redemption point for ILM!

Vocal just on the right side of chirpy w/o ruining everything, great weirdo vibe. Yeah, another winner here.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:51 (eleven years ago)

Disclosure track slightly less annoying on second shuffle listen, but I still wish they had realized that 4 repeats of the fire line would have been enough with maybe a few partial recalls not the whole damn song.

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 January 2014 20:53 (eleven years ago)

the entire Disclosure album is comfort food; every song basically makes its point in about 2 minutes and then repeats itself, whether that's good or bad is entirely dependent on how much you liked those first 2 min

Ya hey - vampire weekend - putting a weird noise in your chorus does not save you from meandering into being a bland boring indie band, it just makes you a bland boring indie band with a weird noise dropped thoughtlessly in your chorus. I wasn't a hater or a lover out of the gate w/this band like lots were (that me and your sister or whatever song was ok) but woof, I am so done w/ these people at this point judging from this song.

emil.y, Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:04 (eleven years ago)

probably "pompous drumming" should also go on the list

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:05 (eleven years ago)

yeah, it's definitely poignant to someone, just not me and i am not fit to be an arbiter of poignance on this planet or any other.

which song featured pompous drumming?

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:17 (eleven years ago)

lol deafheaven i think, where the drumming is pretty workmanlike and dull for the genre

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:18 (eleven years ago)

really not feeling many of the songs on the tracks-list. making me feel old and unhip, i guess.

Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:19 (eleven years ago)

and deafheaven gives me a headache, so i know i'm old.

Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:20 (eleven years ago)

definitely made me feel my age -- mainly because of how retro a lot of things were.

unhip - nah dude, you voted for Vatican Shadow

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:21 (eleven years ago)

any vatican shadow or prurient tracks make the list

no chance.

Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)

i also don't get the over-the-top love for one artist in particular. i mean, i like her, too, but not

I WOKE UP THIS WAY
I WOKE UP THIS WAY

levels of love.

Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)

I am totally singing "I woke up this way" next time that song comes on

I am not going to lie, it is incredibly thrilling and life-affirming to me to hear one of the biggest pop stars of our time singing "I'm so brown/Bow down bitches"; it's basically the early/mid 90s all over again

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 24 January 2014 01:52 (eleven years ago)

what about that line resonated with you? not being snarky at all; genuinely curious.

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 24 January 2014 01:54 (eleven years ago)

The past... 2+? years have seen online conversations about feminism dominated by white people who seem hell-bent on making people of color outcasts/invisible, discounting their opinions, attempting to silence their concerns and generally make people of color "know their place", which is subservient to prominent white, oftentimes male feminists. There was an entire blowup around Hugo Schwyzer, for example, where he basically wormed his way into feminist circles in order to take advantage of women and, whenever called on it, would deflect criticism/focus to a person of color and attack them for not being good allies, and many white women ate it up until a pretty spectacular implosion where all of his awfulness and manipulations were laid bare, leaving the women who complicitly allowed or actively encouraged him in his behavior high and dry. There was also the situation with Tim Wise blowing up on Facebook about how sick he was of people of color not being more grateful to him for being a white man making a living off of championing their cause by taking up as many speaking engagements about the problems/issues facing people of color as he could.

Watching all of these situations, and watching people criticize Beyonce for singing about how much she enjoys her marriage, and having Beyonce come back fists swinging with that song is a gigantic, cathartic release; a massive "fuck you" by proxy to the machinery of this country which lynched my great-grandfather for the crime of not giving up his bus seat to a white man. That is why that song/line resonates with me.

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 24 January 2014 02:03 (eleven years ago)

or to put it more simply, if you're rolling your eyes at that line or the statement Beyonce is making with her album, remember that slavery was not actually illegal until 1943 and then shut the fuck up

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 24 January 2014 02:05 (eleven years ago)

i'm not rolling my eyes at that line.

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 24 January 2014 02:14 (eleven years ago)

(or the statement beyonce is making with the album. i hadn't gotten that statement from the album, but that's not to say it isn't there).

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 24 January 2014 02:16 (eleven years ago)

that wasn't a "you" you (although I appreciate that it sounded that way)

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 24 January 2014 02:17 (eleven years ago)

understood.

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 24 January 2014 02:17 (eleven years ago)

holy fuck why wasn't I posting here instead. consider yourselves spared I guess but I p much agree with jjj on 100% of these songs

pessimishaim (imago), Friday, 24 January 2014 04:04 (eleven years ago)

well, we're still waiting for him to get to hot fruit

mookieproof, Friday, 24 January 2014 04:06 (eleven years ago)

I'd rather hear Hot Fruit than another dull UK diva

Evil Juice Box Man (Moodles), Friday, 24 January 2014 04:07 (eleven years ago)

And yes, I agree that there was a distinct lack of decent rock tracks or anything with some kind of heaviness or edge to it. I don't think that's really ILMs fault because there simply wasn't a ton of stuff like that that I was drawn to this year.

Evil Juice Box Man (Moodles), Friday, 24 January 2014 04:09 (eleven years ago)

The weird thing is that this was a really good year for me and music but now I'm feeling pretty blah

Betty who - somebody loves you - what the hell is wrong with you people

― Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, January 23, 2014 5:50 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Ok I should expand. This is the sort of shit that made me pissed when it would stink up Americas top 40 when I was an early teen. Lifeless anthemic dumb shit about nothing backed with paid intern synth lines, "wacky" retro multi tap reverb vocals. Plenty of stuff that I haven't liked at all, but this is the first one to make me actively mad at you guys.

― Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Thursday, January 23, 2014 5:54 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

fwiw jjj this was imo the worst thing out of many very bad things on the entire list & completely just completely unbelievably boggle-eyedly terrible in every conceivable way

pessimishaim (imago), Friday, 24 January 2014 04:11 (eleven years ago)

love betty who, but mostly for 'you're in love' (which only received the one vote from me.) 'somebody loves you' isn't as good but it had that viral video so there it was.

Betty Who is supposed to be a joke or parody or something, non?

he said, even sexilyer, (dog latin), Friday, 24 January 2014 08:54 (eleven years ago)

I do like that Bunji Garlin thing although its catchiness is starting to do me 'ead in.

he said, even sexilyer, (dog latin), Friday, 24 January 2014 09:54 (eleven years ago)

I was thrilled Garlin made the top 10.

Also really pleased that, despite submitting a fairly wide-ranging international ballot (the only British or American performer in my top 20 was Britney) that most of the songs i voted for had other voters. It's great to see multiple votes for Temi Dollface (8), Stromae (5), Nyusha (3), Ivan Dorn, Lady Saw, etc, etc.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Friday, 24 January 2014 10:53 (eleven years ago)

ShariVari, some of your picks and recommendations were excellent. I also really liked Bachanal.

That Lady Saw track, 'Bun Fi Bun' is one of the most fiercest things I've ever heard in dancehall.

yeah. hoping that "swastikas don't bother me" doesn't become the hip-trend of 2014.

fwiw that pic kept me from actually exploring Siouxsie and the Banshees back catalog until around 2003 and I still kind of hate her for it

I've been looking for the post-2000 interview I read where basically called every black person in LA a thugged-out ape but I can't find it; I may be misremembering the strength of the statement but there were definitely bad vibes

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 24 January 2014 22:14 (eleven years ago)

siouxsie in 2005:

Siouxsie is surprisingly frank, if unrepentant.

"The culture around then," she explains, "it was Monty Python, Basil Fawlty, Freddie Starr, The Producers- 'Springtime For Hitler'." She kicks out her leg in a mock goosestep. "It was very much Salon Kitty. It was used as a glamour thing. And you know what?" she sighs." I have to be honest but I do like the Nazi uniform. I shouldn't say it but I think it's a very good-looking uniform."

You shouldn't say it for fear of upsetting the PC mob?

"Yeah. It's almost like you feel like saying,'Aw, come on. Nazis - they're brilliant.' Political correctness becomes imprisoning. It's very - what's the word? It's being very Nazi! It's ironic but this PC-ness is so fucking fascist. In America they're especially touchy about Nazis and it's so Nazi! You go to LA and it's so segregated. It's very Nazi and the irony is they don't get it. They don't realise how Nazi they are about taking offence to mentioning the word Nazi."

chekhprivan (wins), Friday, 24 January 2014 22:16 (eleven years ago)

I feel like there was a specific story she was telling about an unpleasant interaction with someone but I could very well be conflating some things.

At any rate, I tend to be very wary of white people who say things like that 2005 quote because they almost invariably think that someday, when they get to know me well enough, I'll be okay with them calling me a nigger.

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 24 January 2014 22:18 (eleven years ago)

It's the whole conflation of PC with actual oppression. "You're oppressing me by frowning on my racism!"
