THERE IS A PROFESSOR IN MY DEPARTMENT THAT RIDES HIS BIKE TO SCHOOL. HE IS LIKE 70 YEARS OLD AND HUNCHBACKED. ONCE I SAW HIM RIDING HIS BIKE HOME AT 3AM. ALSO ONCE I WAS BEHIND HIM IN LINE AT TEH GROCERY STORE AND HE WAS TELLING THE CASHIER ABOUT HOW HIS GURLFRIEND JUST BOUGHT HIM 3 MORE CATS SO NOW HE HAS 6. then the cashier was taking too long so he got mad. it was uncomfortable.

"The outer boroughs also get hit hard. Opposed to that new Ikea being built on the waterfront in Red Hook? Don't worry. There's a decent chance it won't be there after a moderate-size hurricane. Residents of Williamsburg-Greenpoint should seek out a male and female of each species and get in their arks. In a kind of one-two-punch effect, a major hurricane will push ocean water down from the Long Island Sound into the Upper East Side, South Bronx and northern Queens, flooding those areas severely. Vast stretches of southern Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island will be devastated. The map shows Atlantic Ocean storm surge reaching as far inland as Flatbush, just south of Prospect Park, with 31.3 feet of water atop Howard Beach."

Popping head up to ask: what ARE the cardinal rules of cycle ett. in NY? Do people say "rider left/behind/braking"? Does anyone use hand signals? I have never noticed these things but now I have a bike in the cittee for the first time and I ought to know.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

nobody does none of that shit, they just try to not get killed.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

I use hand signals...and tell people what side im passing on (on yr left, etc!!), which more often then not confuses people...causing them to go to the side im trying to pass on.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

I took my bike back from my dad this weekend. It is a very old Peugeot, and is magnificent. Unfortunately there is not a single route I can take to get to work that isn't uphill the entire way. Time to get my calf on I guess.

I like to listen to "Also Sprach Zarathustra" when I ride. That's how I roll. On wheels.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

The ride home from work is something of a magical mystery tour of fun, though.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, when I tell people "right behind" a la line-chef-ness, they always MOVE. Right behind means "I am right behind you, JUST DON'T BACK UP".

Clearly I am more worried about cars & cops, much like the cops last night who blocked the bike lane and then yelled at me for riding on the sidewalk just long enough to get around their squad car. I have much to learn about this "in traffic" business. In the country, cars just go around you or WAIT TO PASS. Crazy!

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Will my handlebars get stolen in NYC?

PHOIOEI (blastocyst), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Broadway in Brooklyn seems unsafe for biking....

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

are they nice handlebars?....seats go before handlebars

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

i never ride down broadway...the street is FUCKED...and people dirve like shit.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Neither the seat nor handlebars are nice. I ride a Ross Eurotour that's probably from the 70s? Someone gave it to my dad for free.

all my oldschool messenger/fixed gear riders (dudes w/NCSS [norcal single speed] tattos) are all complaining about the hipster-come-latelies riding the perfect fixed gears with their perfect angular hair and perfect clothes and who get on their bike by throwing their legs over the handlebars. it makes me laugh

Mad SETI (jaxon), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

late 20/early 30 y/o's going fixed gear in September 2005

my clothes are far from perfect....double for hair.....MY BIKE IS THO!!

IVE LET MYSELF GO (ddb), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

the reasoning for taking out the other 9 gears is they are fucking falling apart.
and its gonna be a single not a fixed
meh!@

ME AND ALL MY OLDSCHOOL NOISE BOARD FRIENDS (CUTTY) LAUGH AT ALL THE MESSENGERS AND THEIR UGLY BIKES, BEER GUTS, MINIUMUM WAGES AND LACK OF HEALTH INSURANCE AS WE WHIP BY THEIR SLOW ASSES IN THICK ASS RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC.

THE BRIDGE IS MINE. (ddb), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

i throw my legs over the handlebars. sorry.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

brock (brock), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Another peeve of mine is all the fixed-gear-come-latelies walking their bikes up all the hills in my neighborhood.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

I AM NOT A LEG OVER HANDLE BARS KINDA GUY.

I AM ALSO NOT A WALK MY BIKE UP A HILL KINDA GUY EITHER.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

this bike:
http://i20.ebayimg.com/02/i/05/2b/90/f7_3.JPG

the guy is so confused about the size that i want to kill him. i said ok what's the size in centimeters because we measure road bikes in centimeters and he's like uh 63.5 cm and i'm 5'9" with 29" inseam and it fits. it can't be 63.5 cm, what an idiot. i have to go try it.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

caitlin...stand over the cross bar (the bar twix the seat and handle bars)...bike between yr legs

u want an inch or so of room between yr privates and the the cross bar.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

luckiest bike seat ever

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

no i know what size i am! 58 cm. this guy doesn't know how to measure is all.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

caitlin...58 seems to big for a lass of yr height.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

not true, my real bike (for really riding bikes, this is just for beating up and not getting stolen) is 58 cm. i'm 5'10" and i have disproportionately long legs.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 17 October 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

this is what i have to say to you, bike expert
