from the tzadik website:
NEW JAPAN
Yamataka Eye/John Zorn: Naninani II
Eye and Zorn first met in Tokyo back in 1986. They have travelled
together, toured, performed, laughed, cried, recorded and
collectively been responsible for some of the strangest music ever
conceived. In 1995, nine years after their first meeting, they went
into the studio to create one of the first releases in the Tzadik New
Japan series: Nani Nani. In 2003 they returned to the studio to
create NANINANI II, a wild and crazy compendium of fragile screams
and tender fire. After almost twenty years the telepathic rapport of
these two kindred spirits is stronger than ever.
scheduled to come out in october 2004.

Free the Bee (ex machina), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago)

pretty fucking great

liked it better than the 2002 vooredoms SF show, which was also great but a lot more uniform. the new set has a few sharp turns into brand new places. yoshimi disco diva!

don't want to spoil the surprises but Eye's new gestural controllers are shockingly great, the whole night legend right there.

IM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SHOW.

SAD FACE x 1,000,000,000 (ddb), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

May 19, San Francisco, just saw the Vooredoms.

Hard for me to come to terms with the fact of what I just saw. I was inches away from Eye at some points as he literally conducted sound with light. The band worked through the "Seadrum" superbeat for about a half hour and then, at some point, left it behind for the rest of the night, opting for incredibly complex/difficult new arrangements, as well as an incredibly delightful "dance music" section, where Eye & Yoshimi sang in unison so wonderfully. Eye was so expressive, so active the entire fucking night. When I saw Vooredoms at ATP, they seemed to be mastering the basic idea of the set without necessarily being confident enough to take it all of the places that, three years later, they've finally taken it. Example: Eye had certain joy explosions at the ATP set, but generally he had it kind of reined in so he could focus on conducting. Now, he's mastered the art of combining conducting with full-body, full-voiced, consistent self-expression. His voice soared; he pulled out all the stops. At one key moment, however, Yoshimi, who had been only singing sweetly until then, burst out with one of her startling, amazing screams, and I cried right there. The main set came to an absurdly remarkable, harmonious close with drums crashing and pounding at once, so dramatically, and the two vocalists once again sharing a melody, but a different one this time, so uplifting. There was an encore which worked as a kind of comedown, and there was even a second encore where Eye came back just to use up the last of his mojo for the night on his light machine. He zapped and spazzed and meditated and then, with no big finale, he just stopped, said "thank you" and left. One hour and 45 minutes.

imiprothrin claims that some said before the show they would've killed to see older material. Well, I would've killed to see this show had I known what I was getting into. My voice is gone from screaming for more, and I've been beaming on the inside ever since Eye's very first entrance. To quote Steve Albini, "Ten fucking stars." Top of the list.

>he literally conducted sound with light.

yeah I can't help but wonder what software his laptop was running either

but through sheer chance I've seen a lot of gestural controller concerts the last few months, Michel Waisvisz, Laetecia Sonami, Clay Chaplin, all interesting, and when Eye took the stage with those things it seemed like a massive punctuation / crossover moment, people are going to remember those things

"Now, he's mastered the art of combining conducting with full-body, full-voiced, consistent self-expression"

I came to a different conclusion. At many points, it was apparent to me it was Yoshimi who was conducting the other drummers, and eYe was just sorta doing his own thing. His conducting was more noticeable in the transitions.

Actually, YES, please, this would be a good idea. The girl I was DJ-ing with on Saturday (hi, Frances, if you ever read this...) played a Boredoms track which was utterly MENTAL and had me bouncing around like a rabid ferret. Crazy all-over-the-place Can/Faust style Krautrock buy played with a mind-boggling HEAVINESS that would make Zep or Deep Purple look like Belle and Sebastian. So if anyone can tell me what to look for, that would be great. Mmmmmmm. I am discovering so much yummy good music at the moment. this makes me happy!

350,000 Old Crackers Evoke New York City's Era of H-Bomb Fears

Source: NYT (3-26-06)

The discovery of a cache of cold war supplies inside the foundations of the Brooklyn Bridge has prompted an outpouring of interest from some historians and curators, but city officials are still at loss to explain how the supplies got there and for whom they were intended.

Well now we know who the crackers were meant for!

one month passes...

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1065/594205472_a79f26e6aa.jpg

With less than two weeks to go before Japan’s legendary Boredoms bring their much-anticipated 77BOADRUM sound installation to life in New York City, details about the one-time-only performance have been revealed to the Daily Swarm.

The event will take place on July 7, 2007 (07/07/07) in Brooklyn, NY at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, which sits in the picturesque sliver of space between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. The gates will open at 4:00 PM, and the show features performances by First Nation and Soft Circle and DJ sets from Gang Gang Dance before the 77-minute 77BOADRUM performance takes place just before sunset. Admission is free, but an RSVP is required. Full details, directions, and RSVP information will be available at www.viceland.com/77boadrum soon.

The performance’s 77 full 5-piece, 3 cymbal drum kits will be arranged in a circular pattern, spiraling out from the center like a coiled snake, where the Boredoms’ own drum kits and Eye’s electronic instruments will sit atop a raised platform. Joining the Boredoms will be 74 additional drummers, 10 of whom will serve as drum leaders and cue the rest.

The volunteer army of drummers represent many of the best players in New York City’s avant/experimental underground and were selected by the event’s music director Hisham Bharoocha. They come from a diverse group of bands and musicians who have drawn influence and inspiration from the Boredoms throughout the group’s 20-year career, including Hugo Burnham of Gang of Four, Tim Dewit and Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance, Andrew W.K., David Grubbs, Hart Mingus of Negative Approach, Matthias Schulz of Holy Fuck, and members of Aa, Crash Worship, God Is My Co-Pilot, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Oneida, Excepter, Antietam, Dymaxion, Panthers, and many others. The full line-up of drummers will be finalized this week.

Why 77BOADRUM on 7/7/07? The Boredoms’ Eye explains:

It’s a quite primitive concept. It’s related to where Japanese people came from. There is a river called Amur River, in Russia. Amur River is huge, gigantic river, almost like sea. We Japanese come from the north of the river.

North means above, above means cosmic. If you go further up in space, there is a river. A river of stars in heaven. We came from this place. Japanese people have an idea of this subconsciously.

Amur sounds like the Japanese word Ama. Ama means sky, cosmos, the universe. We see the Milky Way as a river of stars, we imagine it’s like a river in the sky.

In Japan, we have the Star Festival on July 7. It is the middle of the rainy season. If we get lucky, we can see Milky Way in clear sky. Every Japanese person knows a romantic myth related to July 7.

July 7 is supposed to be only day in the year you can see two stars on each edge of the Milky Way. People think one side as a girl, other side as a boy, and they are meant to be a couple. They can only see each other, once a year, on July 7, by crossing Milky Way. Where did that myth come from? It came our Japanese ancestors who lived near the sacred Amur River.

The original inhabitants of Japan had a philosophy called Animism, which believes there are numerous gods in nature. They worshiped the gods in nature. I feel sympathy for that way of thinking.

The people coming from Amur were the opposite, rather powerful and systematic. As new settlers the Amur people needed to get along with original inhabitants, so they declared themselves messengers from the sun, messengers of Amaterasu, the sun god. The Japanese people today came from Amaterasu. We come from the sun.

7 is the number when we try to express sun as sound. When I glance at the sun, I see number 7.

your information is wrong, sir.

1st, it is not "vinyl-only", there is a CD of this on toy's factory: http://www.discogs.com/release/9605

2nd, the artist given in the comp is DJ pica pica pica, but instead of the "pica" is a kanji symbol

3rd, it's not an untitled track, it has a title, but the title is a weird icon that looks like a steaming plate. sort of a round shape like a parenthesis mark lying down for a nap, and three wavy lines rising out of it.

close examination of the obi strip will show you the artist name for EYE - it's the one after YAS

i just mailed a box to a japanese guy. usually their names are yoshi or haru or whatever. this guy's name was all kanji characters and i had to painstakingly replicate them. hope i did it ok.

I saw them, finally! Last saturday! It was so very good!

Plus, concert took place here, which turned out to be the perfect venue:

One of the most mesmerizing evenings I ever witnessed.

the late great, Monday, 20 August 2012 23:45 (thirteen years ago)

It's one of the biggest mine dumps in Germany. 159m above sea level in otherwise flat terrain. You could see for kilometres from there.
Whoever had the idea to book them for this venue deserves lifelong gratuitous love services imo.

the europan nikon is here (grauschleier), Monday, 20 August 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

Bizarrely, due to this concert being part of a big cultural triennale festival, a good half of the audience consisted of nice and entirely unaware 60+-year-old people who got their ticket as part of their subcription packages.
Hardly any walkouts, though.

Yeah, there were buses. Might be a reason why so few considered leaving mid-concert and walking down alone...
