all of those kinds of bands!

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

you are lying.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

because i know you watch car commercials and/or nbc's JOEY.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Das Yellow Swans
Hair Police

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

because i know you watch car commercials and/or nbc's JOEY.

No I don't. I don't have cable and have little to no signal!

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't listen to the radio either (except for KMEL and KKSF, obv)

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Never heard The Arcade Fire either.

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh also still never heard The Darkness.

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Of the lists that Adam has mentioned, I think I've only heard The Killers (I think? I could be wrong though...)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

We are not collectors!

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not a collector anymore, I re-thought my priorities!

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Excuse me while I blue sky.

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i've not heard The Bravery but i cannot believe you haven't heard The Frnaz Ferdiand even if you do live in a retro RV permanently parked on the Golden gate bridge.

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I really haven't heard FF. I couldn't even tell you what they look like!

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

They are Scottish!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 January 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

...which leave me to conclude that they must certainly look pale, bitter and alcoholic.

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

they want to look like Joy Division, but they just look like morons.

i have a never heard a fiery furnace or a bravery or that other one, but i have had that other other one

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the killers album is so bad that at first i thought it might be a joke, but if i had a younger sibling i'd rather them to listen to the killers than limp bizkit or maroon 5.

the bravery... i dunno. i think they wear eyeliner, and one of them has a pompadour. i like the idea of that - new wave reclaiming the pompadour from rockabilly domination.

franz ferdinand don't deserve the level of praise or blame that they've received. i'm interested, though, as to why it's ok for joy division to wear stripey shirts and cardigans and ties but not them. was it realer, back then?

the fiery furnaces, i supsect that adam might like. a very interesting, eccentric, talented band.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it's teh frank ferdinand! (view image)

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren knows so much about BANDS

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren's posts are very reasonable! The only guy who looks silly in the Franz Ferdinand picture is the guy with the hat. Obviously, he's goofing on life. Similarly, I think you are on to something with the "at first I thought it might be a joke" comment re. THE KILLERS.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

except that the fiery furnaces aren't really interesting at all.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It actually is interesting that that dude is such a surprisingly talented songwriter and arranger. I mean, compared to Elephant 6 style indie-rock psychedelia, the guy is a total musical sorcerer.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim whats Lucy's take on this dawson creek shit rock you like?

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, let me tell you! Every time "Take Me Out," "This Fire," "Mr. Bright Side," "Somebody Told Me," "Maps," "Float on," and "Y Control" come on the car radio, she immediately BRIGHTENS noticeably and asks, "What is THAT song?" She has referred to "Float on" as "Alright, Already" and "Somebody Told Me" as "Rushay, Rushay" (from that "rushing and rushing around" line). Really, she knows her shit. I mean you have the alternative rock station on in the car and A.F.I. or Social Distortion or Muse or Pearl Jam come on? No interest whatsoever!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

awesome

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

You should publish Lucy's record reviews.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you don't mean that

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

adam i DO mean it. also i know all the good ways to get babies into me.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

gross

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

cool

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought that fiery furnaces ep today, but i don't think i like it as much as das blooberry boot. it has a couple good songs though. i really dig that blooberry thing cuz i'm fey that way. and indie art-rock is usually unbearable, but the furnaces aren't.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

please, scott. usually we have the same taste, but i cannot see how that band is not fucking unbearable.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know i was gonna like it!!!! Maria got it and i thought it was gonna be her kinda thing and then i just kept playing it. It surprised me as well cuz usually the indie-band-of-the-second kinda thing means less then dirt to me. I like long songs, what can i say? and i do like the way she sings the lyrics. but i totally believe that they are a complete LOVE/HATE kinda band.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I was listening to Blueberry Boat a little today. That song "Mason City" is sublime.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i am so sick of this collective hatred of stuff. think for yourselves, noise dudes. i KNOW some of you AHEM like twee-pop. i know some of you rock out to euro-dance jams. the best thing about being an elitist is not be ashamed of yourself, because you're still better than everyone even if you do like further seems forever.

Holly (an appletross), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like the Fiery Furnaces, in fact, I believe I was first to ever post about them here. Singles collection is good news because that's my favorite stuff of theirs, especially "Sweet Spots"

scott, have you heard the new lansing-dreiden?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the "gross" and "cool" responses rule, while the blueberry boat hatred drools.

stevie, back me up on this, will ya?

She means me, the rest of you can continue hating.

Aaron Hertz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

4 reasons why i shouldn't like the fiery furnaces:

1. 74@7 P3RP3TU@ FUX0R L1K35 7H3M @ND 43 15 @ M0RON W174 73RR18L3 7@573.
2. THEY ARE ON THE NU-ROUGH TRADE.
3. 743 4YP3 USUALLY = CR@P.
4. THEIR FIRST ALBUM WAS MEH.

BUT . . .

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHHAHA @ msp + jack cole

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

first album was meh, yes. totally. but i love the blueberry boat.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

did you like the cd that i gave you in the back of a taxi

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yesssssssssss

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ps. our front room is done now so you should come for one drink and marvel at new decor.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

scott, have you heard the new lansing-dreiden?

do you mean the ep?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

one drink? are you some kind of american?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i miss a N4

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

back soon though (how about later this week?)

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"scott, have you heard the new lansing-dreiden?"

yeah, do you mean the ep, rog? cuz i didn't like it as much as the album, but i only listened to it a couple times. i didn't think the songs were as strong. i need to listen a little more though.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ps. ppl are going to violently disagree with me, but i don't see how lansing-dreiden are much better or even very different from the killers. synth bombast, ahoy!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ill take the killers over lansing-dreiden..FOR SURE.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Belle and Sebastian still make better records than Wolf Eyes, and they always will.

Aaron Hertz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard the Killers album. Maybe it IS better. I wrote a long-ass review of the Lansing-Dreiden album and put it on the freelance mentalists blog. everything i have to say about it is there. It just hit me in all the right ways. I really liked that Fever album on Kemado too.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I freaking love belle and sebastian, beat happening, and television personalities, but fiery furnaces totally give twee a bad name. Also, IMO wulfize and bells and sebastians are about on the same wickedgoodness level.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont think i like any of these bands

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

wulfize, b&s, BOTH GOOD

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

BUT I LIKE MERZBOW OMGWTFLOLZ

Aaron Hertz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

B&S BS

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like Tigermilk (esp: "Electronic Renaissance" and "I Could Be Dreaming"). Between that and a few of the EP tracks ("Century of Fakers", "Slow Graffiti", etc.), I could really forget the rest.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The EPs are best.

Aaron Hertz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

There are some elements in Lansing-Dreiden songs--harmonic structure, vocal parts, guitar playing--that are more complex than anything the Killers do (and also quite awesome). Teh Killers are way more simple and direct.

I don't know what to expect from Lansing-Dreiden, though. The first two thirds of that Incomplete Triangle album are fairly amazing, but then the latter third is just these New Order/Depeche knock-offs. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO THEY ARE OR WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I found the perfect method to get caught up on indie rock: hitch a ride with someone who only listens to indie rock and monopolizes the stereo!!

I got a ride back to Michigan for X-mas (4 hrs each way) with this old high school friend of mine, and she brought along her iPod which was stuffed to the gills with indie. These are the bands I heard for the first time on the trip-

Arcade Fire
The Album Leaf
Grandaddy
The Killers
Death Cab for Cutie
Pinback
The Thrills
Interpol (I'd heard them, but not the new record)
TV on the Radio (I actually requested this, cuz I wanted to hear what they sound like; she took it off after about 4 songs)
GBV (of course I know them, but she played 'Do the Collapse', which I'd never heard)

I'm SURE there are other things that I'm forgetting, but you get the gist of it. It was sheer torture, I don't think I need to tell you. I actually did kinda like that Thrills album though, I gotta admit. Cool arrangements, very nice 70s soft rock stylings, I just wish the singer was better.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually kinda liked do the collapse. am i insane? i think i liked that big grandaddy album. the sophtware slump one. there are some okay spacey moments on that one. the thrills are horrible if they are the ones that did the let's bottle bohemia album. arcade fire sounded really boring on the npr segment they were on. they must be this year's postal service or something. death cab i know i musta heard, but it left absoluterly no impression on me. the killers i've only heard the hit. i think. the one with the big video.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't heard the new interpol. i reviewed their first album for the village voice.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i am listening to the new album now.

omg msp i just listened to that, it's so cuet

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought maria a camera obscura album for christmas. along with the junior boys album and the new michael mayer. camera obscura do that B&S thang.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I loved "Teenage FBI", which I'd never heard before -- I know a lot of folks have said it's one of Pollard's best and yeah, I'd have to agree. but nothing else on the record really left an impression. Grandaddy were pretty terrible, even I could tell they were a second rate Mecury Rev and I don't even like Mercury Rev. I suppose I should be embarassed about liking that Thrills thing (think it was their first album actually), but it actually felt like a cool drink of water after all that bad guitar indie she subjected me to.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

if yer feelin sinister i like pretty much all of. the title track and it's kids sounds and pianos make me a lark.

scott, i've been tempted by camera obscura... they are quite fond of their scarves and hats:

my favorite mercury rev is the boces record. i think that's underappreciated. "you think too much, i think!"
m.

msp (msp), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually don't know much of their stuff. I'm agnostic. Instead of "don't like" I should have said, "not an active and practising fan." They just never left much of an impression. I'm sure I will get around to investigating again at some point.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm already scared of the indie rock i got in the mail and i haven't even played it yet. it is described as: " a politically charged, post-punk, hip-hop, dub hybrid."

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

duuuuuuuuude, trust me, yerself is steam is a fine record. i think you would dig it.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

so is the record i just posted. dont pretend its not there!

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm gonna buy the entire mondays/black grape catalog for five bucks at the record store one of these days and write the definitive guide to shaggy baggy excess that you have ever seen. it will be a noize board exclusive!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

you have the wrong idea about this record scott!

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

is it a politically charged, post-punk, hip-hop, dub hybrid?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never heard Pinback or TV On The Radio, either.

And I've only heard one Interpol song.

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the only mercury rev song i ever liked was "carwash hair" and only because dean wareham was involved (am i imagining that?).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i like about half of interpol's first album... "obstacle 1" (??? the second song on the album is great. the drummer is pretty good, althought their first drummer (on their demos) is way better.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

mercury rev's first 2 records are pretty great. yerself is steam is noisey as shit.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Boces is one of my favourite records ever. Fuck a Dean Wareham!

.adam (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i like that mercury rev song "goddess on a hiway." it was put on a mix ape for me a while baccccck.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

interpol had the original drummer of saetia in the very beginning HAHAHA.
-- gygax! (gygax0...), August 9th, 2004.

i like a couple of the songs on the first album (esp. "obstacle 1"), the original drummer of interpol is the drummer in saetia.
-- gygax! (gygax0...), October 1st, 2004.

i like about half of interpol's first album... "obstacle 1" (??? the second song on the album is great. the drummer is pretty good, althought their first drummer (on their demos) is way better.

hahahaha oh poor cutty. I loved haraunging him last night for listening to "shitty indie bands with teh hype."

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

the new killers video has eric roberts in it and a girl who looks like kate bloompsworth from blue crush.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I like the Shins. It took me a while to realize it, since I'd pigeonholed them for so long as a boring indie band, but they're really quite good at what they do, which is sort of a quirky Wes-Anderson-soundtrack pop with fun, twisty melodies.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

No they suck.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

The shins are pretty good. I saw them pretty early on in their career (thanks msp!) and they were a lot more raw which was nice, I had no idea they were so synth-y on record.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

No they suck.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

no you suck

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 18 February 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)
