drew daniel too!

this is the thread where sf noisedudes post noiseworthy shows of worth:

Come take my hand
You should know me
I've always been in your mind
You know that I'll be kind
I'll be guiding you

Building your dream
Has to start now
There's no other road to take
You won't make a mistake
I'll be guiding you

You have to believe we are magic
Nothin' can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don't let your aim ever stray
And if all your hopes survive
Your destiny will arrive
I'll bring all your dreams alive
For you

From where I stand
You are home free
The planets align so rare
There's promise in the air
And I'm guiding you

Through every turn I'll be near you
I'll come anytime you call
I'll catch you when you fall
I'll be guiding you

You have to believe we are magic
Nothin' can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don't let your aim ever stray
And if all your hopes survive
Your destiny will arrive
I'll bring all your dreams alive
For you

what should one expect of Tuxedomoon these days? i've only got (but love) "half mute" and "desire"

[whoa! forgot they were from sf]

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Monday, 7 March 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

those are their best two albums. they will probably play things from them, but new-style; I saw the beginning of their Sonar set in 2002, very very laid back, no weird sound textures, digital piano & tasteful sax weren't helping... I would have stayed if my (ex)girlfriend had been into it.

I'm definitely going this time because I'm a huge fan and I imagine that room will be one huge pure love reunion of everything cool about weird SF. I'm not sure if this is a show for the unconverted. Get tickets soon though if you're going.

Fucking Champs/Comets on Fire/Oneida/Black Mountain

tickets are suddenly going fast.

www.virtuous.com

south presents:

3/18
Fucking Champs
Comets on Fire
Oneida
Black Mountain
www.12galaxies.com
show at 9:30
10$ advanced and at the door (www.virtuous.com)

"...within their distinctive sound, variety abounds on "V", from "I Am The Album Cover" which channels the techno-blues rockisms of late-period ZZ Top, to the Frippertronics-ish-isms elsewhere. There's also a bit of electronic tunesmithery that's so much better than anything they did in their collaboration with Trans Am. But that's
no big stretch for this band, and for the most part "V" is heavy, rockin' Champs-at-their-best stuff, the trio dealing out rapid, tense riffing, no-denying-it's-metal-lic sheets of sound, and hard hitting drum filigree left right and center."
Aquarius
www.thefuckingchamps.com

"...squarely into the psychedelic garage punk realm, shoulder to shoulder with the likes of 60's heavies Blue Cheer, and modern-day Japanese distortion fiends High Rise. Your friends from college will understand better if you compare Comets to Monster Magnet -- they channel the same sort of MC5-ish ass-kickin' and Hawkwind-like space-
outin'."
Aquarius
www.cometsonfire.com/

"Nobody seems able to agree on just who they sound like when they rock this way, though the great MC5 are frequently mentioned. There's also a clear parallel to the New York Dolls, given that these kids are also flamboyant characters who play noisy damaged rock in New York. They've got a bit in common with the 13th Floor
Elevators, who they've been known to cover. The thing is, you could compare Oneida to just about anyone loud, violent, and a bit perverse -- Devo, The Birthday Party, The Stooges, Girls Against Boys -- and you'd be right on."
All Music
www.enemyhogs.com

"Black Mountain's recipe reeks of early Sabbath on an Appalachian psychedelic tip. The songs are intricate and cinematic . . . urgent and pleading at times . . . somber and forlorn in others. On the surface their influences dominate but underneath we hear complicated guitar parts and structure that lead us to believe that these Canucks know what they're doing. A bar band for the drug set and the
reefer addicts . . . bohemian honky tonk for those short on love rather then luck."

Great, Brave, True, Strong, Great, Real, Wise, Great...adam levine (nordicskilla, Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I think in order to truly grasp the trajectory of what we're doing you must BUY THEM ALL! hee hee

Serious-ish answer . . . "The West" is out of print, so if you see it in a used bin buy that one as you will get the highest resale value if you don't like it. From a consumer standpoint, that would be the safest choice. (it seems to be most people's favorite, for what that's worth)

description wise:

silly = Quasi-Objects
twangy = The West
conceptually "tightest" + most "pop" = A Chance to Cut
most improv = Live W J. Lesser
Matmos does medieval folk = The Civil War
harshest = Rat Relocation

dude drew you didn't answer my questions.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, sorry.

sprawling, industrial-ish Matmos = Matmos s/t debut

I don't disown it. 1997 was a fun year.

the rat record is on the Locust label, it is part of a series with other people- everybody had to make a field recording of an urban location and then respond to it. We trapped a street rat that had been invading our house in a "have a heart" cage and recorded it screaming and trying to get out. Then we made a harsh and noisy musique-concrete-ish EP thing out of it. Now you know!

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i was gonna say, i like that first cd. hrm, wonder why i never heard about that rat one, that's the only thing i don't have (even got that silly matador remix thing).

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Is anything exciting happening 5/21?

Andre Dawson (deangulberry), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

it's a picture of sachiko either praying or getting ready to kill you, hard to tell which one.

I have a hard time with her solo records but that Cosmos record is exfoliating.

Dean: not sure offhand, are you visiting?

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'll be up there for Boredoms that Thursday night. Giants/A's game Friday night and then Saturday? I don't know.

I know there's a Sightings / AFrames show Friday night at the Hemlock (?) but I think we'll be too tired after the ballgame.

Andre Dawson (mr harvey weinstein), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

thank you for reminding me to buy tickets for the boredoms & see you there

if something turns up for saturday I will certainly sound the alarm.

anyone going to Dungen at Independent Oct 1?

JAXON (jaxon), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

also, should i go see Dengue Fever? i haven't heard them, but it sounds interesting.

JAXON (jaxon), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

Alex says they are amazing. I don't even know who they are!

WHERE IS DREW DANIEL?

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

Dengue Fever are a bunch of Silverlake hipsters covering Cambodian psych rock and etheopiques style jazz funk

JAXON (jaxon), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

And Alex likes that?

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

i have never liked dengue

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

drew's in geneva!

if that's the show dengue's playing with neung phak, the latter band does a live show that's good and weird. I dunno about dengue.

ruth and joe semi-conductor are in town and doing a show at pfa on sept 7: http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/pfa_programs/semicond/index.html

they're also doing a show with people like us at ATA sometime in november, which I'm v. much looking forward to.

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

PFA! ATA!

but these are FILLUM places!

is this something I might like?

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

They're friends, yet I like their work a lot. http://www.semiconductorfilms.org/noflash.html. They're from Brighton. You know Brighton!

also, definitely tempted by this, just to actually get to see her:

Kronos Quartet + Asha Bhosle, Sept. 22-23, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater

also, MTT's playing orchestral Feldman with Mahler's Fifth (best season-ticket-holder sucker punch he's done since the Scelsi + Monteverdi show), Sept. 28-Oct. 2, I'm goin'. Have not heard the Feldman piece ("I Met Heine on the Rue Fürstenburg").

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

I know Brighton WELL. my brother lived there

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

I visited once, ruth and joe lived at that bizarre completely ruined 1930's white apartment building on the seaside, officially abandoned but for artist squatters. I'd never seen such a luxury building in such a disintegrated state, the outer walls were corroded beyond belief... yet inside, everything nice and cozy.

also visited that magnificent oriental fantasy palace.

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Brighton's actually a pretty fascinating place. I know exactly which building you're speaking of. I think gareth hates it there.

Have you seen the pier since it collapsed? I think you'd appreciate the sight.

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Kronos Quartet + Asha Bhosle, Sept. 22-23, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater

I didn't pick up on this. I love Asha Bhosle. We shall see if I have any $$$ left after my trip.

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

the pictures are amazing. when did that happen? what do you think the next major landmark will be to collapse?

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

From Wikipedia:

"The West Pier partially collapsed on December 29, 2002 when a walkway connecting the concert hall and pavilion fell into the sea after being battered by storms. On January 20, 2003 a further collapse saw the destruction of the concert hall in the middle of the pier. On March 28, 2003 the pavilion at the end of the pier caught fire. Firefighters were unable to save the building from destruction because of the precarious state of the walkway. The cause of the fire remains unknown. On May 12, 2003, another fire broke out, consuming most of what was left of the concert hall. Arson was suspected. On June 23, 2004 high winds caused the middle of the pier to completely collapse.

Despite all these setbacks, the owner of the site West Pier Trust remained adamant they would soon begin full restoration work. Finally, in December 2004, the trust admitted defeat, after their plans were rejected by English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund. They still hope to rebuild the pier in some form, though restoration is no longer their goal."

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

It is extremely powerful to stand there and look at. Last time I was there, the first structure was still somewhat intact but tipped to almost a 75 degree angle as if it was toppling in slow motion.

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

definitely seems that 'restoration' is no longer the appropriate word.

I want to go back, I could live in Brighton, there's a healthy respect for decay.

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Brighton's sorta like SF....sorta!

The last honest gentleman (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

I didn't want to say it, but since you have, yes, it's true. Right down to all the web designers & artists in exile.

Inca Ore is playing grandma's house tomorrow night & there's another Semiconductor show at 21 grand in january. You really should see their live video piece before they leave town, it's really something.

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

last night's Luc Ferrari tape music festival was aces, 12 speakers including the ceiling. had forgotten how great 'Place des Abbesses' is, the track buried at the end of that Tzadik album. saturday's Trevor Wishart / Richie Devine show was about what you'd expect (Wishart's new piece was surprisingly great actually, made out of a short sample of two wine glasses clinking then atomized into crinkly 4D).

& Thomas Dolby / Bochum Welt / Safety Scissors DJ in March.

& Meredith Monk is coming up -- and Glass playing the soundtracks to the Qatsi trilogy live at Davies is kinda tempting.

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

(Just got round to listening to Meredith Monk for the first time - like 'Dolmen music'.)

Milton have you heard Pousseur's "Paysages Planetaires"? I read a rev of it last month.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:43 (twenty years ago)

(I guess there must be an ASK MILTON thread round but the search is a bit slow right now.)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:46 (twenty years ago)

saw it at amoeba, but I really need to stop buying those expensive box sets... looks like it could be good though.

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

ok I only have 'scambi', and that never quite clicked, but "paysages.." did sound good and I'm not too much into box sets (have only two in my possession).

If I get hold of an MP3 I'll revive the noise ysi thread.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 10:30 (twenty years ago)

that'd be cool -- his Acousmatrix disc is basically just for the extreme hardcore 50's/60's electronic music nerds -- impressive but strictly chinstrokey

http://www.mimaroglumusicsales.com/browsebyartist.php?artistlast=pousseur&artistfirst=henri&arraynum=826&limit=20

also, thanks again for that Richard Barrett cdr from a ways back -- I played a set with a colleague of his Jodi Gilbert last night, I was glad to have the context.

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Cool! Prob said this a few times but you shd def try Barrett's 'opening of the mouth' for ensemble (with a tape part). I know that there is another disc from him called 'Dark Matter' that's due out sometime this year which ws, just like 'opening..', part of an installation.

Pousseur is quite intriguing, what with being part of the whole Darmastadt crowd and then going his own way (as a few did). It'd be nice to see how his current music has turned out.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Working my way through some of thePousseur and its much better than all of the older 'classic' stuff i've heard from him - he uses his tough electronics around world music samples to warp it!

The Thomas Dolby set at EGGS was all I had hoped for. And what a weird ass group of human beings Thomas Dolby fans circa 2006 turned out to be . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

shasta, what show did we see there?

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Black Dice, Animal Collective, Comets On Fire

you should think twice before you say something like this. last night's show had a mostly lit loft with a few colored lights and a chandelier above the bands. the fucking dumbshit dj thought he'd be cute (i think he actually thought he was doing a good job) by flicking the lights on and off. it wasn't ever even in rhythm or during exciting moments.

-- JaXoN (jaso...), August 27th, 2004 10:13 AM. (JasonD)

I'm trying to find the comment about "nuts"...

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

that's the show i thought it was, but wasn't sure. i've been to a few oakland lofty things. they all sorta seem the same. think i saw lightning bolt at that same place.

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Yes, and I think you asked me to go with you!

Do you remember what that guy said in the liquor store, I can't remember...?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

haha. something about pimpin or bitches. they sold P.I.M.P. Juice there too, right? and you bought a bag of hot salty nuts?

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Julio, that Pousseur you YSI-ed is fab. kinda what i wish the other two trax on Canaxis sounded like.

team jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I like the Pousseur track. interested in hearing more of the original tapes untransformed as well.

I've heard side 2 of Canaxis more than a few times and I still can't remember a single second of it.

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 01:51 (twenty years ago)

hey milton,

If you like Zazen Boys, there's a small chance you might like Mukai Shutoku's previous band Number Girl (but probably not, they're pretty indie-rock).

Their first album was pretty epic. Here's the first single:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmPWBchXjcU

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

wow, that is so indie it is shocking. good to know.

the vocals aren't the main draw for me with Zazen Boys, it's more the stop/start prog rhythms -- I know it's just as much RHCP as Ruins, but Yoshida should be getting royalties for 'Cold Beat'. I dunno if I'm a full on Zazen fan yet though.

Ruins are playing with AMT on sept 8th at bottom of the hill!

should i go to the Slits? not too sure about reunion tour thingies (although heard ESG was great last year or two ago).

also, won't go to this, but cool. Jean Jacques Perrey http://www.researchpubs.com/features/perreyfeat.php

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 28 August 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Perrey play the Lab a few years ago. Was a lot of fun. Not sure if I want to brave the crowds tomorrow, it's one thing seeing Curtis Roads or Hecker play there, but the room gets uncomfortable at 60 people. Pan Sonic is playing a few shows there in late September.

going to these:

Drew Daniel, Saturday, 22 September 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

far fewer dinners happening here these days since you moved

walkabout: basic underlying chords are C sharp major, B major, A major, B major. pretty simple. the last two notes of each bar briefly hop up a major fifth, but the underlying drone stays C# / B / A

hm didn't notice wobbly

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 18 January 2008 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

Goodbye Blue Monday: cute inside (and by cute I mean "decorated with 30 yrs of stuff collected by slightly crazy person" so actually it's pretty cool), but it's basically just a coffee shop that sells beer.

Silent Barn is an enjoyable mess. People do actually live there, so the bathrooms & general conditions are fine-to-tolerable and I find people there usu very friendly, the vibe is good. Can't rly speak on the sound cos I always end up seeing noize-ish shows there so who can tell?

Don't know the Tank.

Laurel, Friday, 18 January 2008 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

what about glasslands..i can get contact info for whats her name

bb, Friday, 18 January 2008 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

hm didn't notice wobbly

see 10pm friday.

tehresa, Friday, 18 January 2008 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

no one's meant to notice that guy, I think

thanks Laurel! that's more concrete info than I've been able to glean in a half-dozen phone calls. & e-mailing bb shortly

note matmos blurb:

For this concert they will present their “cover” of “The Backyard”, the final act of the Robert Ashley tele-opera “Perfect Lives{, and some newer pieces that focus on pure electronic music. Expect some improvisation and some guest shenanigans.

Milton Parker, Friday, 18 January 2008 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

yes, i was assuming you would possibly be involved in guest shenanigans as well?

exciting!

tehresa, Friday, 18 January 2008 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

bb, Friday, 18 January 2008 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

jaxon: i'm kinda addicted to Olivia Newton John's "Magic"
shasta: yesssss
jaxon: i was making an extended re-edit of it last night but audacity crashed on me
shasta: it's very BeeGees dream-disco
jaxon: yes. done by ELO
shasta: i think milton used to DJ an edit of it... years ago....
jaxon: oh yeah?
shasta: pre-[CONTROVERSIAL MODERATOR EDIT]
shasta: i went to see Milton DJ it the day i met [CONTROVERSIAL MODERATOR EDIT].
jaxon: ah
jaxon: i should ask him
shasta: definitely
shasta: haha, look at the first post in this thread: milton's show thread
jaxon: ha. funny
shasta: i think i made this thread the night i came home from that show.

jaxon, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

does this song milton played exist?

jaxon, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

i seem to remember it was pitch-warbled and perhaps mashed up with perhaps "Jabdah" or something equally extraterrestrial.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

you mean GYGAX made this thread

dmr, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

(RIP)

dmr, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

that was around the time Gygax was experimenting with body transference

no tapes from that night but I remember "Magic" went well with Parmegiani's "Dedans-Dehors 4", & my favorite moment "Electric Avenue" pitched -12% + Pandit Pran Nath + "Broken Calliope" from A Collection of Rare Musical Devices of the Last Century

why don't I get asked to DJ more often

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

btw this is the gig for this Saturday, I'll be there after I check out the first half of the Helmut Lachenmann show at Mills
