ddb (ddb), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Richman knew how to make the Strat bite! I'll bet there's some good Jimmy Page stuff done w/ a Strat, too

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

BUT THERE IS EVEN BETTER JIMMY PAGE STUFF WITH A LES PAUL.

AND THE FIRST MODERN LOVERS ALBUM IS ALL ABOUT JERRY HARRISON.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

If that was true WHY DID THE TALKING HEADS SUCK SO MUCH?

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

They should remix it then and just erase the guitar parts.

No, there's great rhythm guitar playing on that: "Astral Plane," "She Cracked," "Someone I Care About." And it's all about the Stratocaster. "Pablo Picasso" is an orgy of STRATS.

I agree that there's tons of Strat usage that totally sucks. Same with Les Pauls, though -- I mean, really.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

also first album is all about Richman not breaking down yet and JOHN CALE producing.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

are there any other J.J. Cale fans on the noize boards? I love his playing. Sometimes he used fenders, but maybe not strats. check out this picture of his harmony acoustic that he electrified (go down to the bottom):

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Fowley sessions -vs- Cale sessions FITE!!!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

no fite -- both are good in their own ways.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

though i guess i listen to the cale sessions more -- cale is a better producer, probably, but each has his "charms"

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

do noise dudes not like talking heads psssssssshhh

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

the SG is ze best "rock" guitar. only problem: never stays in tune, but who needs TUNES in ROCK &/OR ROLL?!?!? second-best: les paul, but OH MY ACHING BACK. worst: STRAT. svr, fuck off!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't hate it, I just don't know what you can do with an SG that you can't do with a Les Paul and get a little bit better of a sound.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

i like how chunky the sg is. and the lightness! oh the lightness!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

parker fly guitars are really light.

You know what I mean, though? Obviously the Les Paul has more bottom, but it's also got a lot of high end and it's not like the SG has more high end or a high end that's got any more bite than the Les Paul's.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

DO YOU GUYS LIKE NEPTUNE?

I wanna get a drum machine and make a guitar out of like a suitcase and an acoustic neck and have a band that sounds like big black + neptune. Put places to mount stompboxes on guitar body so I can tweak knobs.

ddb ULAN BATOR needs to practice soon! i have an all-black tele.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

But Talking Heads, though -- I'm interested in this. Must say that it pleases me to see Jack say that they sucked. He's the only one to just come out and say plainly, "Talking Heads sucked." I like a couple of their popular songs okay, but I only ever bought one of their albums: MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD IN A DOLLAR BIN. I thought it was bad. The psychological aspects of the lyrics were very annoying.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

of talking heads:

first album is OK -- probably their best.
Byrne is a classic pseudo-intellectual trying way too fucking hard to be smart.
Musicwise, nothing really to write home about and sounds done better by better bands.
With Eno things just get more pointless plus worldbeat influence.
definitely one of the weakest bands from the time.
i mean, for chrissakes, the Tom Tom Club were better than the Talking Heads and that sez a lot.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

what bands did "fear of music" better?

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

i'm just saying.. if it's funky enough for fucking bernie worrell it's funky enough for me

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Well, if they have Bernie Worrell's seal of approval, then never mind.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

the one live side on that album i was listening to, either the 2nd or 3rd is great. live in 79, maybe? they would be a jam band today.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 25 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

they would also be from brazil today.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 25 April 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

maybe bernie just wanted to get paid after years of getting stiffed by george clinton. no shame in that.

POOR TINA.

also, telecasters, jaguars and jazzmasters good, strats blehhh.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

"99th Floor" by the Moving Sidewalks: you don't do that on a Jazzmaster.

This thread made me think about Lenny Kravitz. "Mr. Cab Driver" is actually more Jonathan Richman than it is Jimi Hendrix.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Man all you strat-haters are losers and hiveminders. Stop being so predictable. Strats fucking rule. LISTEN TO ONE LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS.

I bought my strat in ROCHESTER at the House of Guitars. I bought it from the brother of artist-starting-with-an-S-that-Skot-Seward-hasn't-heard ARMAND SCHAUBROECK

I can sort of understand it. I'm not so into the Stevie Ray Vaughan sound or the Knopfler sound.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Try to imagine "Fool For Your Stockings" without the almighty Strat -- just try it!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Suddenly I'm thinking I shouldn't even be reading this thread much less posting but lately I was thinking if I had a band I'd want it to sound like Big Black. guitar skinng. fun. What kind of guitar does Steve Albini have?

Some Talking Heads stuff annoys the hell out of me but I really love Fear of Music and Remain in Light. Do not understand how one can be a "pseudo-intellectual," though.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

I HAVE A STRAT OK. I LIKE IT OK.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

i feel sorry about bringing up not liking strats. dudes takes me way too sersiously.

steve plays a uh y'know one of those things goddammit i'm blanking but it's like an early kramer except better (kramer split from the dude). oh yeah, travis bean.

house of guitars also has an insane record basement thingy. got two stone mint copies of the raincoats first lp there for cheapo.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

I've got a '63 Strat that I spent an entire Florida summer doing masonry work to buy; it's an amazing guitar, but my enduring frustration with it is that I can never get it to sound really good at each stop on the 5-position switch. The bridge always sounds great, and the neck pickup gives the whole Blackmore sound, but otherwise, the in-between positions often sound really flat/clipped.

Also, didn't Albini play a Dan Armstrong guitar for a while? Was that in Shellac?

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

*I should add that the switch on my Strat is a custom switch that one of the previous owners put in; I've thought about putting in a regular 3-way CRL switch.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

no, albini's always played a travis bean in shellac. bob plays a tb bass, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Try to imagine "Fool For Your Stockings" without the almighty Strat -- just try it!

easy now. i don't particularly care who plays what in the end. try to imagine michael jordan without air jordans. he'd probably be doing the same exact thing with another pair of shoes on. maybe some british knights?

re: big black
Steve Albini: "If this record sounds black, it's because everyone else tries to be so twiddle-dee-dee, lightweight, gee-aren't-we-having-fun," he says. Some of the "really good noises" he tortured out of his homemade "stratocaster copy," (cannibalized from the remains of several guitars), for the record include an "instant train-wreck noise," a "female-sounding buzz," and a "scratchy, insects-coming-out-of-the-ground sound."

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

yeah he played the strat copy back then, in the video of their final show it gets destroyed.

HSTENCIL AS phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Travis Beans! I'm gonna go listen to that John Berenzy thing on Killed by Death Volume 3.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

OK, that record's kind of annoying, but Travis Beans are probably pretty cool guitars. Metal necks. That San Diego band Upsilon Acrux uses 'em (or at least they used to -- haven't seen them in years).
