have you talked to your sister recently? is she doing bad things?
when are you coming home to visit? you need to clean out your room.

by the way do you think that ___ is in drawer ___ in your room?
can i throw out the things in drawer ___ in your room?
by the way, your room is my sewing room now.

RE-PETE

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Okay...Georgie called!!!! Wait until you hear some of the shit he told
me!!!!!! I will just list...

The garage, which Joanne and Frank "took" what they wanted from before the
restoration company tossed the rest, contained all the contents of the condo
in Florida and more. I assume you saw some of what was in there because
isn't that where the table that they gave you was located? Georgie said
there were lots of boxes of stuff in there that he was clueless as to what
was in because they were never opened. They were just all dumped in there.
The restoration company told me that Frank and Joanne went through it and
took what they wanted before the rest was dumped....There was supposedly a
set of gold flatware in the garage that Paco and Shirley gave my mother...

The tools were mostly taken by Frank. However, over time, Georgie found a
couple and bought a few. He put them in a toolbox that you and Megan gave my
father years ago that said "Grandpa Joe" on it. Joanne took them when she
moved into her condo.

Apparently, Eddie had asked my mother if he could "borrow" the money to buy
Joanne's engagement ring. Georgie never knew what came of this ~ if my
mother agreed or not, but I'll bet she did and I'll bet it was never paid
back!

But this is the best....Apparently in late 1999/early 2000, Joanne was being
investigated for something at the Dime. She was on "hiatis" for a few months
while this was going on! She was let go right after that!!!!!!!!!! What they
were investigating was the fact that she was in charge of the ATMs for the
Dime and somewhere between several hundred thousand and a couple of million
dollars was missing!!! I remember Joanne talking about a situation maybe a
year or two before this where a couple of million was missing and she found
it. She claims that they were more annoyed that she found it because they
had already written it off and then they had to go back and correct the
paperwork that they had filed about it. To the upper-ups, it was more of a
headache then to write it off. That part I remember her telling me. The part
about HER being investigated never was told! I was told that she was taking
vacation for several months because she had built up so much vacation time
that they were forcing her to use it....Now that I think about it, it's
interesting that she was able to build up so much vacation time with all
that was going on with Michael through those years!!!!
Do you remember this? About her taking all kinds of vacation then?

Pretty wild!!!

Oh! And apparently, sometime last year, my mother was talked into letting
Joanne take that box with all the jewelry to her house! So Joanne has all of
my mother's jewelry!

HAHAHAHAHAHA ~ I am all full of a fabulous wine and this is particularly funny to me right now!!!!! ~ when Nonni was paralized and they called in a dwarf. She (Aunt Fran) was all "I NEVER heard that story! They never called in a dwarf!!!" So I said that then Nonni saw a vision of the Blessed Mother. She told me this whole story one day up in her TV room, and Fran said "Oh! That wasn't a dwarf! It was------" she said the guy's name which I can't remember now, but it was so ginzo that IF I did remember it, I'd probably pee myself laughing right now! The distinction is that he wasn't a dwarf ~ HE WAS A HUNCHBACK!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Dan - And why didn't you ever answer when I said how do we get 'sole
visitation' as you phrased it, with you?
Last thing I wanted to do was go back to court! All you two had to say was
'pick her up on so & so date' for the weekend! Following us around like a
shadow is ridiculous and very unneccesary. If you had gone along with the
first meeting as to unsupervised visits we would not be asking the court to
confirm this again! This has been all too painful!

Hi Jon-

So nice to talk with you last night. Don't worry
about the money. I'm going to deposit $500 today.
Hope it will clear quickly.

If you need a haircut before graduation, I would
suggest getting one soon so you don't have that "newly
shorn lamb" look.

Have you emailed Jamie German yet? How about
sending back that little note for Doc?

Once you finish your work (amid all the senior
celebrations), maybe you could get back to the Career
Center to finish your resume and draft a cover letter,
at least. It could save you a lot of time and
aggravation down the line.

If you have books you can sell back to the book
store, do so as soon as you're done. The less you
have to bring home the better!

Note that I'm saving all "nagging" for email to
spare you during phone calls!

Dad and I are so proud of you!

Love,
Mom

Hope you are well. Sorry we could not get to speak to you on Sunday. Went to see "His Dark Materials" at National Theatre. Magnificent. There will be a film made but I don't imagine it will be as dark and disturbing as this version.

He has been house sitting, so don't be surprised if he is there when you get

Going out Friday sounds good. I'll call LEx and see if she is available. I
don't know what Polly's work schedule is -- but we will find Stacey time

I am sure it is not a random maple but rather a very specific maple. I believe based on my research that it is in the Acer Palmatum family due to the leaf form. It seems way to big overall to be a Japanese maple though; they are generally slow growing and smaller than a “regular” maple. It is not a red maple, the leaf isn’t right. Why not send your photos by e-mail to the county extension agent for identification or stop at a nursery with your camera and show them the pictures? Let me know what you find out, I’d love to know for sure what kind it is. How is your studying going?

My mom likes to bold all the key sentences in all her e-mails:

Dear Laura,

I went to Saks Fifth Avenue. I was told that it was the only place in Naples that sells Louis Vuitton bags. (I was surprised that there weren't others in such an upscale place). There was a purse IDENTICAL to the one I bought -- I asked the sales girl how much and she said $795
Imagine $795 !!
And it was extra to buy the long strap. I would guess with the purse, wallet and strap (and tax) the cost would be close to $1,000. And I got it all for about $40-45.

How was your "gig?" send photos of you singing at the club.

three weeks pass...
Hello. On the Sunday evening after your arrival, *** and **** ***** have asked us all over to their house around early evening to meet our cousins from L.A., who are staying with them for a few days. This is my my first cousin on my Dad's side, his Mum and Dad are ***** and ***. ***** is my Dad's younger sister and ***'s mum is ***'s twin brother - hence the connection. They are a young couple with a baby aged 2. I said I would ask you both if you would like to come along (they live in ****** Lane, Hampstead). Please let me know if you would like to meet them.

Lots of overseas visitors coming soon - ****** is coming the same weekend as you to go to Milan for a wedding. I don 't know when we are seeing him yet but if you are around it will be nice.
***** and **** may be coming at the end of September so unfortunately you will miss them.

Also, I will book out some time for work. My days for going to work are on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Dad can probably get the time off as well. I will let you decide what you want to do.

Finally, if you happen to be passing Sephora or a good drug store please could you get a 180 ml (6 fl. ozs) tube of md formulations face and body sun protector factor 20. It is in a white and grey packaging and it is very, very good. We bought the present one in April and it is two-thirds used up after daily use by both of us. Very good product and comfortable to wear.

We are all really looking forward to your visit. Not too long now! Love Mum Dad and Nick xxxxxx

If it's any consolation, you'll never be dragged to any dinner parties in order to exchange banalities with whatever half-relatives she feels like forcing you to mingle with.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Dear Laura,

I was glad to hear how excited you are about New York. As to this apartment, I don't know the area or anything, but one thing that troubles me is the concept of "railroading." Please think about the long term effects of having to go thru some one else's bed room.

Another thought-- it's been two years since you WALKED in snow. How far do you want to walk -- in half a foot of snow -- to get to the subway? Just another consideration .... The winter gets even longer in the city.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Hi, John-- I received another ticket from the City of Chicago-- now totaling $125; second violation is for $75 for parking or standing in viaduct/underpass on 7/18. Did you pay the $50 ticket? It was not received as of the mailing of 8/03/05. Please clear this up. I hate getting this stuff in my name!!!

Otherwise, hope all is well with you. CD coming along OK?

Subject: Rock Star INXS

Last night we saw 4 terrific performances. As David Navorone said, "all were as exciting as a stadium quality concert."

David "rocked" with each person. He and Susie were terrific together.

Each one was so good that it will be hard for anyone to choose. It will now be down to things such as personality - will we get along- (JD might fit here) - ability to deal with stress & the press (Susie is the sensitive one).

Dad thinks Mig or Marty will be eliminated tonight,. I think Marty or JD will be eliminated. The answer is tonite at 9 pm. Can you go to someone's house and see it. The performances are well worth watching!!!

Love, Mom

They met with moderate success, but the support from the Nazi party was not as great as Lenard and Stark would have preferred. After a long period of harassment of the quantum physicist Werner Heisenberg, including getting him labeled a "White Jew" in the SS's weekly, Das Schwarze Korps (The Black Corps), they began to fall from influence. Heisenberg was not only a pre-eminent physicist whom even the Nazis realised they were better off with than without, however "Jewish" his theory might be in the eyes of Stark and Lenard, but Heisenberg had, as a young boy, attended school with SS chief Heinrich Himmler. In a moment of historical strangeness, Heisenberg's mother actually contacted Himmler's mother and asked her if she would please tell the SS to give "Werner" a break. After beginning a full character evaluation (which Heisenberg both instigated and passed), Himmler forbade further attack on the physicist. Heisenberg would later employ his "Jewish physics," in the stillborn Nazi project to develop nuclear fission for the purposes of weapons or energy use.

Good morning Theresa,

I hope you got a change to read the e-mail from Jane Claire.  Sounds like an interesting time; it was the first letter and I am relieved that her e-mail is functioning.  How are you?  Hope your day off yesterday was a good one and that today will be a nice one too.  What did you do?  Any plans for today?  Try to get some freah air and sun.  Are you feeling better?  Do you still have the cold?   I still am reall concerned about you.  You don’t have to send me a lengthy letter but just send me a couple of lines that you are up and moving.  Of course you can call any time.  Did you find your phone yet?

Love you,

MOM (10:34:56 AM): Wehad a nice time. Gma is still talking about her party! Gpa can do no wrong -- at least for another week or so!!
orion0014 (10:35:04 AM): great :-)
MOM (10:35:24 AM): And gpa started talking about Bomba books -- was glad that your books are still here-- he wants to borrow a couple to read -- that OK with you?

orion0014 (10:36:30 AM): sure, of course he can borrow them

MOM (10:38:04 AM): And I learned that his mom was an opera singer and dad an artrist! (Bomba not gpa!)
orion0014 (10:38:14 AM): yup.
MOM (10:38:47 AM): So DId you do any cleaning yesterday? I did a little -- and lots of laundry.

HAHAHAHAHA It's going to take me all night to calm Dad down :)
An off duty cop pulled over a car full of drunk Mexicans RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR HOUSE!!!! We didn't know he was a cop and all Dad sees while he's playing on his computer is a guy jump out of a big truck with a gun and a car full of Mexicans at gunpoint!!! He's yelling "CALL 911 RIGHT NOW!!!!" and he ran and got his gun.
By the time this was all said and done, there were six cop cars, one off duty cop and these Mexicans....It's like watching Cops on a big screen TV.

Subject: The Miracle of Toilet Paper...
Fresh from my shower, I stood in front of the mirror complaining to
my husband that my breasts were too small. Instead of characteristically telling me it's not so, he uncharacteristically comes up with a suggestion.

"If you want your breasts to grow, then every day take a piece of
toilet paper and rub it between them for a few seconds."
Willing to try anything, I fetched a piece of toilet paper and stood
in front of the mirror, rubbing it between my breasts.
"How long will this take?" I asked.
"They will grow larger over a period of years," my husband replies.
I stopped.
"Do you really think rubbing a piece of toilet paper between my
breasts every day will make my breasts larger over the years?"
Without missing a beat he says
"Worked for your butt, didn't it?"
He is still alive, and with a great deal of therapy, he may even walk
again. Stupid, stupid man.

Adam, did you say you had mold in your house?

Your shoes may have been molding. If you wear the same pairs of shoes often, you should invest in shoe dryers or a dehumidifier.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 2 March 2006 21:59 (twenty years ago)

The mold has been removed. House is now sparkling. Shoes were just old!

I was just thinking about that time in Chicago when I
mistook the airline pilot for a bellhop! We DID have
some fun on some of our wacky trips. Remember when
you had to sleep under the pool table at the Case
Western frat? Or when dad decided to take the Navaho
mud road in Arizona and I thought we were going to
plunge into a gulley?

Did you go to the party last night then? Looked for you on line a couple of times and didn't see you so I figured you did? How are you today? Mom is in a little bit better sprits. But, just a little. Guess it is my age. Okay well, off to my interview. I wish this interviewing nightmare was over. Then I am going to force myself to go to the GYM! So send me karma to go. Okay honey have a good day and let me know how you are.

i remember them; the tinkers. came every year in one of those caravans that you now rent as a tourist. camped on the old road near our house and we had to hide the washing because they'd nick your right arm if you weren't keeping an eye on it

56:17
but one family, my granny liked and our john as a little boy, so i'm told, used to spend long hours sitting with them in the caravan

57:23
they are in england now and are bad buggers
one of them pushed our joe aside and literally stole his truck with him standing next to it last yr. he got out to 'help' them find their way...

When U were 15, she came home late from
work, looking for a hug. U thanked her by
having Ur bedroom door locked.

When U were 16, she taught U how to
drive her car. U thanked her by taking it every
chance U could.

When U were 17, she was expecting an
important call. U thanked her by being
on the phone all nite.

When U were 18, she cried at Ur high
school graduation. U thanked her by staying
out partying until dawn.

When U were 19, she paid for Ur
college tuition, drove U to campus carried Ur
bags. U thanked her by saying good-bye
outside the dorm so U wouldn't be embarrassed in
front of Ur friends.

When U were 25, she helped to pay for
your wedding, & she cried & told U how
deeply she loved U. U thanked her by
moving halfway across the country.

When you were 50, she fell ill &
needed U to take care of her. U thanked her by
PUTTING HER INTO AN OLD FOLKS HOME

And then, 1 day, she quietly died. And
everything U never did came crashing

I've learned...that we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.

I spent an hour on the phone with my mom yesterday trying to help her set up an email account, despite the fact that she can't even keep her password straight long enough to enter it into the "re-enter your password" box on the registration page. I don't think she really "gets" passwords; she probably thinks she can type the name of any horse that she had as a child and it should work. Seriously doubting I'll get email from her any time soon.

oh yeah, so posting like her would be like: "What? contacts? do I put your email in the WWW box? and then click the x? Hey! Everything all went away! Did I send it to you?"

recent phone conversation:

mom: did you buy the tickets?
me: no, you said you were going to pay for them so i thought you would buy them
mom: well, why can't you get them? i can pay you back.
me: well, i don't get paid until tomorrow.
mom: can you buy them tomorrow?
me: if i can remember to do that while at work, i guess maybe? but why don't you just buy them so you don't have to worry about paying me back? you can go online right now and do it.
mom: well, i thought you might be able to avoid a service charge.
me: the only way to do this is to buy them in person i think, i'm not sure. i can't do that tomorrow after work because i have to come home to meet you.

this goes on back and forth for 5 minutes and reaches awesome depths of her digging for information about my finances, me going into 'i don't want to talk about this it is my business' mode, her eventually hanging up on me.

can't wait for that visit tomorrow!!

i kind of wish jess' mom was visiting instead!

tehresa, Friday, 16 March 2007 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
my mom just told me this awesome story about how when she was 2 months pregnant with me (summer 1974 aw yeah) she and my dad decided to go camping for a couple of weeks in BC, not that far from vancouver but still, at that time, pretty wilderness land. so they packed up the dodge station wagon and their three cats and a camp stove and some food and went off with their long hair (clearly) and headbands (yes) and homemade clothes (sure) and beaded leather necklaces (obv), totally oblivious to many things. like how when you're pregnant you have to pee a lot, and how you maybe shouldn't take three cats camping let alone just let them go free so they climb up trees and sneak into the ranger's cabin, and how if your wife is hormonal and in the middle of nowhere with you you should probably just let her win at canasta once in a while or she will throw two entire decks of cards at your competitive ass.

At the tender age of eight months little miss Tobie killed her first prey--a little birdie that she proudly left for me on the family room floor! I think she was pretty happy about it until I shrieked! She's the first in her litter to catch and kill anything, so that's pretty great. Except for the part where the little birdie kept twitching after I gently placed in the garden! %^(

Hi Guys-
I know it's not really your hip or geek indie kind of music, but we went to
the first real old-fashioned rock concert I've been to in 25 years this
weekend at the Cuthbert in Youjean: Melissa Etheridge on her national tour.
I'm not really a Melissa fan, but she's Lee's heartthrob for years, so we
had close-down seats (though most people were non-stop dancing). Anyway,
her band is something else! It was quite the high-energy show, above and
beyond, especially her axeman Philip Sayce, from Toronto. I guess he's been
around a little while, since '96, but he is pretty fantastic. Amazing how
much energy 47-year-old cancer-survivor Melissa can put into this, too.

New-age Dadz:
Dear Family,

This bounced, but I wanna share it with you, even a few days later.---DD

I am still emotionally labile and subject to fits of tears of joy since the election a week ago. Sleep comes with difficulty. I feel like my "inner squirrel", often frisky and energetic this time of year , has been gnawing on amphetamines. But it's truly a natural high, sort of like the second coming, sort of like VJ Day, sort of like waking from an ABu Ghraib nightmare and finding yourself pain-free with all your body parts intact.

I had no idea how depressed I was by the big public events of the last decade or so. Faith in America was deeply ingrained in me, sniffed in with the smells of desk varnish, inkwells, chalk dust, green sweeping powder, and cedar pencil shavings in my small town schoolrooms.

I've had to suppress all those memories and all that aliveness to survive in an America of stolen elections, torture, war, disinformation, rolling black-outs and theocrats subverting our institutions. Obama's election allows me to be more fully ALIVE! It has caught me by complete surprise with its intensity.

I'm trying to get in on the health reform team, or at least get my hands on a locker-room pass. Not very probable, but I have worked on it for decades and have learned a lot. My age will be against me, but Harvard helps. I'm firing off emails, memos and resumes already, and dusting off contacts with the Chicago leadership. Perhaps something will click into place. ANy connections of leads you can offer are welcome.

So many thoughts I'd like to share. Can you come to my Birthday Party here on the weekend of the 12th and 13th of December? Otherwise will you make it to the Island for one of the Holdays? Or can we rendezvous in Florida this winter during a visit to Gramma? My family is important to me, far-flung and independent as we all are.

Much love to you all. Please let me know if a trip to this part of the world is possible. If not, I'll come to you before many moons pass. Yes we can. Yes we can.
Much, much love,
Dad

Hi J and J, I'm working all weekend and Monday but Tuesday early I take off for the Tn. Fitness Spa. It's 100miles into the country and they don't get phone service on cells...so if you have an emergency here are two contact numbers.. I'll take walks, canoe, swim, eat healthy and live in an A frame cabin...Off to late summer camp I go!!! Love yous, Mums

Just a command from your MOM: If you don't register to vote and get out to vote, don't come home for the Holidays. This is important. If you want to vote for Romney/Ryan, go ahead. Just don't ever come home again. We all need to negate the votes of your crazy grandparents....
Love -yer Mom.

We too were a bit overwhelmed by the basement furnishings. The roof and the house color seems a little odd, but everything looks well maintained. I still wouldn't want to move back. No more south side for me.
