who is the "on the road again" cover by?

Yawn (Wintermute), Sunday, 5 February 2006 08:08 (twenty years ago)

Les Rockets, lp just got reissued, bought it from Flexx.be a few months ago...played it last night. Nobody ran up to me and screamed "oh my god it's a crazy vocoder cover version of that song!" as predicted. Of course, nobody was there.

(I was actually djing this fashion after-party thing with Kevin and Max. But it was double-booked, we played to an empty room, I went first at like 9:30, then those guys, then some dude with Final Scratch and Bee-Gees mp3s took over as suddenly the space filled for a different party, with literally, the most horrible people I've ever seen in my life.)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 5 February 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

i just listened to Jed's mix last week. and also loved the On the Road Again track. so much so that i wanted to buy the original.

lf (lfam), Saturday, 1 July 2006 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah, upon listening i think that drax is mixed with double fantasy's 'children of the universe,' which is what drax is an edit of. so double synth fantasy quicksand.

nice..i discovered my last mix goes into the red once the beer kicked in. lesson: when mixing l ate at night and keep monitors low, use headphones so you can hear when you overdrive. also: you can drink to much when "djing"

Episode 21, the latest, presents a re-enactment by BB (that's B. B4umes — not B.s Brecht, Bardot, or... Bennett) of a conversation between himself and CK. (Why can't CK remember when the hell THIS conversation might have possibly been had?! Possibly because CK opens bottles of sake and goes on the false-air to drunktextualize Evel Knievel before punking Jay Leno.) B. B4umes titles it "Ringing Through Finnegans Walk," and it begins after a short intro by Mr. CK.

another idjuts / theo parrish type filter abuse disco house thingy ... this is the first draft of the "euphoric house" mix i promised for the dj mix 2009 contest thread. instead we just ended up mashing together a bunch of jacking tracks with doubled-up basslines.

not sure if that's going to win any fans on ILX, so i am posting it here for feedback ... obviously we need to put it into audacity and clean up the bass levels a bit, we were jamming the EQ a bit beyond what common sense dictated. anyway ... i recommend not listening with the bass turned up, for now, unless you want a sort of disco-house meets black country techno type earbleed experience.

this was done live, in one take, four handed on two tables and one shitty mixer (still saving up for kp3 kaoss pad) with serato scratch live, so listen for the loops

joseph st. joseph vs dj moonship - dirty needles & dusty drawers

paul murphy & marc woolford - jazz room (spiritual south mix)
maas - powers of ten
jess & crabbe - spliff party 2000
wee papa girl rappers - heat it up (KMS acid mix)
ian drury - hit me with your rhythm stick (in flagranti edit)
mfon - ron hardy's revenge
todd terry - jumpin remix
aphrohead - body stronger
black science orchestra - save us (the jam)
maurizio - M5
dj garth & ETI - 20 minutes of disco glory (dj harvey remix)
paperclip people - the climax (12" edit)
chicago housing commision - the way i want ya
armand van helden - break da 80s
plastikman - kiropraktor
gene farris - confessions
sound stream - dance with me ... levels get painfully red here, sorry :-(
problem kids - our summer suite
artist unknown - ???
royal house - this shit iz 4 real
seven grand housing authority - love's got me high
random fuckery

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 1 March 2009 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

yeah sorry about the levels on this one, esp the back end ... we were trying to do some daft punk type stuff with levels but w/o actually owning a band pass filter or a proper mixer. next time i'll watch the levels a bit more closely!

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 1 March 2009 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

moonship, that mix is awesome; the levels are definitely no worse than rub-n-tug's campfire mix or something. hardly amateurish fuckery dude

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

however, THIS is some real amateurish fuckery...

DANCE AND SHAKE YOUR TAMBOURINE

a mountain of one - "can't be serious" (amo)
greg wilson - "cosmic dj delight" (rvng)
the bee gees - "love you inside out (cole medina edit)" (american standard)
bonar bradberry - "dungeons" (mindless boogie)
dr. john - "i walk on guilded splinters" (atco)
fleetwood mac - "tussskk (beard science extension)" (beard science)
universal robot band - "dance and shake your tambourine" (p & p)
grace jones - "williams blood (yam who? cosmic jam mix)" (bootleg)
soft rocks - "umut 2000" (soft rocks)
unknown artist - "sir mr. doctor to you" (golf channel)
hercules and love affair - "hercules' theme" (dfa)
noir désir - "le vent nous portera (rubber room rerub)" (mindless boogie)
the joubert singers - "stand on the word (larry levan mix)" (tirk)

thought i'd go for some feedback on my mix, too, as i'm considering entering this one in the ilm competition. it mostly just has a bunch of really obvious beardo choices i really dig, with minimal efforts being made on the dj trickery side of things. it's all vinyls though, recorded to a C-90 (hence the hiss- did this as a stylistic move but i'm not sure it works) and transferred to mp3

got some other, more housey mixes in the works for the competition though- maybe i'll even break out the kaos pad for some filter/effects fun eventually

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

also- be prepared for some real shaky mixing on that last one

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

feelin this!

yur twit (tehresa), Sunday, 1 March 2009 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

cept i just hit one weirdly mixed section but overall 18 min and i'm cool w/ it

yur twit (tehresa), Sunday, 1 March 2009 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

yea... i meant there's shaky mixing throughout the mix i posted, not just the end of it ha

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

tusk section: nice

yur twit (tehresa), Sunday, 1 March 2009 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

it is a good mood for me today, this mix is.

yur twit (tehresa), Sunday, 1 March 2009 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

thx!

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Sunday, 1 March 2009 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

my big issue w/ my mix is that from gene farris pretty much on through MAW there's a lot of hard clipping going on from levels being wayyyyyy in the red. if you look at it in audacity the second half essentially looks like a solid brick of sound. so some of the beats are getting cut in the middle and you get a "galloping" effect that sounds like we've not matched the beats up right. this is particularly bad in the soundstream / problem kids mix.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 1 March 2009 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, the kicks are getting cut in two because they're hard clipping at the peaks

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 1 March 2009 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

but thanks for the compliment, will listen to yours soon

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 1 March 2009 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

that is being burned and going in the car, stat

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 2 March 2009 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

my only feedback i can possibly give is that the second side is much *LOUDER* than the first, for some reason. can you fix that in audacity?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 2 March 2009 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, pretty sure i could figure that out

glad you liked it!

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Monday, 2 March 2009 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

i *loved* it

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 2 March 2009 06:40 (seventeen years ago)

yur twit (tehresa), Sunday, 8 March 2009 02:28 (seventeen years ago)

here is my kinda druggy house mix, which i recorded while drinking beer last night using two turntables and a shitty stanton mixer. opinions welcome.

dj haitch - sunday night at the apartment

walter jones - all god's children (maurice fulton remix)
fuckaponydelic - switch the lights
still going - on and on
neal howard - the gathering (joey negro edit)

idjut boys - droid one
alexander robotnick - the dark side of the spoon (lindstrom & prins thomas remix)
outlander - the vamp (prins thomas diskomiks)
harold melvin & the blue notes - bad luck (dimitri from paris edit)
reverso 68 - piece together part 2
house of house - running to paradise (walking these streets)

resident advice whore (haitch), Monday, 9 March 2009 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

i recorded a billion mixes this weekend only to throw them all away because of a shitty mix or two :(

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

haitch I listened to yours on the train this morning, I think it's a sign of a good selection that I liked the first half (where I didn't know any of the tracks ahead of time) better than the second (where I have a few of those records)

dmr, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

lol, i wondered if i was going a bit 'obvious' at the end there.

resident advice whore (haitch), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

nah I didnt mean it that way but I knew it was gonna sound like that

I meant just from looking at the tracklist I would consider the second half more up my alley but the first half was dope

threw that terje record in the mail btw, be on the lookout

dmr, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

since we're havin roundtable what do you all think of this edit. first time I've tried to make somethin like this, I tried not to go overboard on the f/x

http://deadheatnyc.com/tracks/AxondaEdit.mp3

i will def check that out when i get home

resident advice whore (haitch), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

the blurb about that record on discogs sounds pretty crazy. brings to mind that joakim edit of jj cale for me, good job! you wouldn't want to go too OTT with the effects, any more and it might start sounding a bit cluttered.

resident advice whore (haitch), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

thx! glad you dug it

dmr, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

just got around to listening to the edit. feeling it. it's def more edit feeling than the first one you played me. the subtle effects were a nice touch. that's all in audacity?

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

yeah all in audacity. "echo" and "phaser" on the effects menu is the only thing I used I think. besides looping stuff.

dmr, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

been listening to that bobby brown edit a ton, good stuff!

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Saturday, 14 March 2009 09:56 (seventeen years ago)

love can't turn around (lifelike remix) - farley jackmaster funk

hah, i assumed all those farley remixes from last year would be awful but this is not bad!

juniper jazz (haitch), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

hows the mix otherwise?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

am up to 'uptown', it's good! the transition from 'foxxy' to 'you should be dancin' was a bit rough but everything else seems fine to me.

think it's about time i did another one of these

juniper jazz (haitch), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm, well, you're in for a bit of a trainwreck next: the michael jackson mixes are all fucked up because the tempo on that track swings all over the place. also i thought going into "foxxy" was a lot worse than coming out.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

argh you almost had it on the way in... then it got away.

'buffalo bill' is amazing. (not $50 amazing though, jesus christ discogs)

well, i'm really really really depressed due to seasonal unemployment, ill health, impending divorce, etc so i made a mix to cheer myself up.

no beatmatching because it's all 60s/70s psych and jazz and there didn't seem to be any point in trying anything tricky.

it's a good semi-mellow mix for lying around on sunny days on high doses of clonezepam, which is what i've been up to lately

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Friday, 23 July 2010 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

sorry, i don't have it anymore.

in fact i don't even remember making that mix and i'm surprised i tried putting some of that stuff together.

did it sound good? i'd actually really like to hear it.

i was working on a slow motion house mix for a really long time but by now all of the tracks are really played out. i started on a new breakbeat techno mix too but technical difficulties are slowing that one down. i really need to learn ableton if i want to mix stuff like anthony shakir's "assimilated".
