Cleveland crushes Akron without a doubt. Cleveland at that time had much more while all Akron had were DEVO and Tin Huey and then a bunch of third tier bands.

tim, i found the album for like 3$. just a few weeks ago i found another copy of it for like 25$ and passed on it. the song that's really slaying me on it is Green Tambourine

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 13 August 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I'd buy it if I saw it cheap. I didn't know they did "Green Tambourine." I was actually listening to the Lemon Pipers the other day. The Green Tambourine album has a good song called "Rainbow Tree" on it (plus a couple of the singles: "Green Tambourine" and "Rice Is Nice" - "Jelly Jungle" is on another album, though).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 13 August 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Lemon Pipers were a local band around my hometown Cincinnati (actually Oxford Ohio/Miami University). they were a groovy garage band called Ivan & the Sabres who got signed by Kastenetz & Katz/Buddah and turned into a bubblegum group. their albums have an cut or two that hint at the band's original sound -- "Dead End Street" is the one I really like. the lead guitar player later had the band RamJam of "Black Betty" fame. I'm too young to have ever seen the Pipers but my older pals always described them as more progressive/psychedelic than their (enjoyably twee)records.

Archie's gonna be there
Jughead's gonna be there
Reggie's gonna be there, too
Betty's gonna be there
Veronica will be there
You and me will be there, too

Hey, Archie's parties are out of sight
He's gonna have one on Friday night
Pick you up about a half past eight
Please be ready; I don't want to be late

Archie's gonna be there
Jughead's gonna be there
Reggie's gonna be there, too
Betty's gonna be there
Veronica will be there
You and me will be there, too

Archie's parties are always the best
Why don't you wear your yellow mini-dress?
Everyone's gonna have a ball
Everyone, I mean one and all

Archie's gonna be there
Jughead's gonna be there
Reggie's gonna be there, too
Betty's gonna be there
Veronica will be there
You and me will be there, too

m.

msp (mspa), Thursday, 18 August 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I don't know yet, m. I need to give it a full listen where I'm paying attention to the whole thing. "Another One Goes By" is one of the best songs of the year. Sometimes, there's this kind of rambling melodicism on the album, though, that sounds like Neutral Milk Hotel (esp. coupled with the way the guy sings). The songs seem to transcend that, but I don't know how often yet or to what extent.

Rogerio Duprat - A Banda Tropicalista do Duprat
Gal Costa - s/t 1969 (same one jack cole has i think)

and from mr stormy davis: Buffalo - Volcanic Rock

there's a lot of scary David Hykes. in fact most of them I find uncomfortably cheese-drowned. but the very first one, with the first lineup of the Harmonic Choir, is a five star grade A auto-trepanning classic

tim, i'll put it on for you right now. i told another friend i got it and he told me it wasn't that hot :(

but a while ago i downloaded two other songs besides The Mexican, and i remember thinking they were cool (and it's a chick singing?!)

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Stormy, i just started listening to the Rogerio Duprat, and i see what you mean. it's not exactly what i was thinking (but i do like the 3 songs i listened to so far). it's a lot more happy-go-lucky, soft pop w/some nice orchestration and a bit of fuzz than a full out heavy psych tropicalia album.

do you remember which Milton Nascimento album you were talking about that was the total headfuck?

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

oh, it must be Milagre Dos Peixes.

what about the really experimental Caetano album you also mentioned? i've only got his self titled album that was in the tropicalia box set and an album he put out in the early/mid 70s that's all in english.

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

tim, so far, the Babe Ruth reminds me a lot of like Heart and Janis. nothing as funky or proggy as the mexican, but i like it (i'm also not hard to please unless something's boring)

Enjoyable and kind of pleasant, but nothing outstanding. Almost sounds like Neil Young's Dead Man soundtrack or some Morricone western soundtrack or maybe even Codeine (Hi Gygax!). Review by Mark Richardson
Yamatsuka Eye curates, produces (along with Keigo Oyamada aka Cornelius), and mixes this varied and powerful sampler of music from his Shock City label. The 23 tracks come from a number of different artists (many are thinly disguised Eye pseudonyms), but sturdy beats, flowing psychedelia, and Eye's anything-goes policy on the mixing desk are hallmarks of the set, giving Shock City Shockers a consistently skewed sensibility. Highlights include Psycho Baba's "Raga Gurjhari Todi," which combines tribal rock drumming with an endlessly unwinding coil of sitars. Eye's tracks offer a more sequenced and beat-friendly version of the sounds he pursued with the Boredoms at this time, and the reappearance of certain motifs through his work lends further cohesion. As SkyEye, he mixes drum'n'bass-style beats and swirling thumb piano with the sound of a baby crying, while the exciting DJ Pica Pica Pica piece, "Action Now," is a barrage of pounding drums and dense sheets of feedback. Boredoms drummer Yoshimi P-We leads OOIOO, and the fine "Asozan" later wound up on their album Feather Float. Yoshimi teams with Oyamada to record as Standing Earth & Touching Air, and their "Lotusful" explodes with energy, a swirl of acoustic guitar, bashing drums, and Jew's Harp. The track by Rovo (a band that includes Boredoms guitarist Seiichi Yamamoto) is a highly danceable amalgamation of psychedelic jamming and hypnotic electronic sequencing. With hardly a weak track and an exceptional sense of flow, Shock City Shockers gives a stunning indication of the depth of Japan's experimental scene. Throw in some of the most mind-blowing CD cover art you're ever likely to see (Eye cribbed from his own design here for Beck's Midnite Vultures cover) and you have a record that warrants the hefty import price tag.
