*tsk* that poor naive snitch oughta know better wearing a t-shirt like that

amon (eman), Saturday, 3 September 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Ian, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter is one of my favorite records ever. I originally got the Relics of the Incredible String Band comp when I was about sixteen. I had only ever read a chapter about them in this old book called The British Invasion by Nicholas Schaffner (first place I read about Syd Barrett, too). Can't tell you how much I loved that record. At the time, the original LPs were out of print, but I did find a used copy of 5,000 Spirits a year or two later and then there was a vinyl reissue of The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter which I bought and still have.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 3 September 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

got from worky today:

LP:

x "los angeles"

45:
skullflower split w. MTT
meters "Hey pocky a-way"

ian j (laurah), Sunday, 4 September 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

That Pussy Galore record is one of the best records from that time. Frenz Experiment is a good Fall album, too.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 4 September 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

It's funny how a lot of people (seemingly, anyway) used to think that the Fall jumped the shark with The Frenz Experiment. You never see anyone saying something like that now.

Capital Letter Rock (jaxon), Sunday, 11 September 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Capital Letter Rock (jaxon), Sunday, 11 September 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

the first track on the second side of the ian matthews is dope.
he's in a lot of used bins, but those records all have some good-to-great songs on em, or sweet versions of others' songs (incl. best "these days" ever?)

noizem duke (noize duke), Monday, 12 September 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

i'd rather listen to the first isb than anything by oregon, sheesh.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 12 September 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

i haven't listened to the Oregon yet, but i LOVE the CoDoNa records w/don cherry that he's part of and the back cover looked so fresh. dudes w/sitar, tablas, standup bass and guitar. and it's from 71 or 72. it's probably pretty rad.

Capital Letter Rock (jaxon), Monday, 12 September 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

I always wondered if The Xenon Codex was any good. I saw Hawkwind on that tour! (They were great!)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 12 September 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

jody, if you're reading, i bought that Hoover because i remember you posting the cover of it on this thread i started Can we talk about early-mid70s West Coast post-psych/pop/rock/folk-rock/country-rock?

it's really fucking rad.

the Shawn Phillips is great too.

tim, i'll listen to the hawkwind for you when i get home

Capital Letter Rock (jaxon), Monday, 12 September 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

only listened to the first side of the Hawkwind so far, but it's interesting. definitely sounds like it was made in the 80s. sounds almost like if Steve Miller went all kraut

Capital Letter Rock (jaxon), Monday, 12 September 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

it's really fucking rad.

it's good. if you like that i'd recommend the dave bixby record (ode to quetzalcoatl) from around the same time. druggy early '70s "christian loner folk."

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 12 September 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

i've got three of Bixby's mp3s on my ipod. prolly something you uploaded at one point or another. they sound real bedroom 4-tracky. just him and his guitar. you can hear the strums and everything.

Capital Letter Rock (jaxon), Monday, 12 September 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

i've still got it all on my laptop and i'll happily ysi the rest, tomorrow maybe.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 12 September 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

have you heard the two Armando Piazza albums? i downloaded them from http://cottoncandyhammer.com/ a while back and fell in love. he's an italian dude who put out two acid folk albums sung in english. super mellow. both have lead guitar by Shawn Phillips (actually how i learned about him). the first one is all acoustic leads and the second is all fuzzed out. i'll upload those soon too.

stormy, did you ever listen to them?

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 17 September 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Scott, did you ever hear that first Lavender Hill Mob album on United Artists from about 1977. They were this pretty cool kind of Wings-like band - they had some really good songs including "Loneliest Man on the Moon" ("Babe, I'm the loneliest man on the moon/Spendin' my nights with the meteorites/Oh, babe, I'm the loneliest man on the moon/Sharin' my lips with a total eclipse").

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 17 September 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

No, I have never heard Lavender Hill Mob, but I've heard good things about them. I have a good album by Wings that isn't Wings. It's another Wings. Cool pop-rock. Tim, do you like Crack The Sky? I forget. Their 70's albums are really cheap and cool. I can't remember what i'm supposed to tape you and el sabor. i know i was gonna tape you guys the most horrible song on the first horrible womb album. but not the whole album, cuz it is just too horrible. and the chubby checker acid-rock album. but i can't remember what else. does el sabor ever come on the noize board? how come el sabor doesn't come on the noize board? there should be an ask el sabor thread. you could ask him about bad metal and acidrok till the cows came home.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 17 September 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Scott, all I remember you mentioning is the Womb song. I will look forward to that tape, seriously.

Did u know I've been working on a hopeful book on psychedelic music? I just finished it, actually! Well, a draft, anyway. It's really academic! With music notation where I transcribed things like the first verse of "Who Are the Brain Police" and all kinds of stuff. I talk about the structure of Kim Fowley's "Strangers from the Sky." It's also my master's thesis!

I am going to check into Crack the Sky. I don't think sabor comes on the noize board, does he?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

chubby checker acid-rock album.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?

does el sabor ever come on the noize board? how come el sabor doesn't come on the noize board? there should be an ask el sabor thread. you could ask him about bad metal and acidrok till the cows came home.

seriously. besides noise dudes opinions on music on ILM, i always appreciate his

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?"

you can read all about it in my chubby checker piece in the new ugly things magazine on newsstands now!

i remember what i was gonna put on that tape now, tim. it was the cassette-only vinyl maniacs/open-minded men thing that my fave crazy philly dude made in 1999. i think me and everyone at the philly record exchange are the only people who have ever heard it. and whoever i played it for over the years. it's a hoot. he used to perform under the name Hoppy The Frog way back when. He wore a big frog suit. and he had a short-lived band called dyke that was really cool. a trio that played sensitive lesbian synth-pop songs in drag. he was ahead of his time. dyke opened for bunnybrains and mens recovery project (in their kraftwerk phase) at an amazing show at the astrocade in philly years back.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 17 September 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

scott, the piece in ugly things was excellent.

re GGF: it's completely not what i was expecting. it's so cute and jazzy and soft poppy and english. the vocal harmonies are really beautiful, the guitar work is amazing, but not overstated. there's just enough experimentation w/o beating you over the head with it.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I should get that, too. I haven't heard it.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I was listening to the first Family album, In a Doll's House, recently. Man, that album starts off great. And then it starts to lose me a little. I should listen to side two of that again.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

My favorite thing about the Ex disc is that it shows their progression from a 70's just learning to play punk riffage to the multi demensional musical clusterfuck they've become. Now how bout a reissue of the 6 7" (which was realy 5 7" s and a 12") set and Dead Fish next!!!!!!!

Ilk is progtastic- Early VDGG dukes it out with Yes as a bedroom duo. Their first disc is mighty fine too.
