i saw the masada group play once in college for free. that was pretty rad.

i know zorn is hated, but it always struck me as odd how much his naked city stuff fit in with some of the grind core emo violence stuff i was into in college.

Is there a way for John Zorn to be in the bottom corner of every thread?

He could be my friend and give me tips on HTML fixed positions.

haha, I should make a John Zorn desktop buddy....

I saw Painkiller play a WFMU benefit w/ Sonic Youth, Dim Stars, Gumball and Lovechild. Painkiller ruled. Or at least, it blew my high school mind.

ok jaxon, let's simultaneously keep the gayness high and introduce some non-gayness. who rules jaxon?

i like ayler, pharaoh sanders, later coltrane & miles, coleman, don cherry--typical stuff for the noize board. the only contemporary stuff i really know & like is corasno/flaherty/greg kelley. and nmperign, who aren't really that much of a jazz band.

I haven't heard the rash of Arthur Doyle releases that came out in the wake of his revival (including the home cassette stuff), but an album like Arthur Doyle Quartet Live @ the Cooler is NOT fucking overrated. In fact, it's probably one of the best free jazz albums of all time.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

jewish jazz is weird i admit

howell huser (chaki), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

I listen to TONS of jazz and hardly any of it is recent and hardly any of it is recent. i am a huge jazz rockist. which is why i never post on ilx jazz threads. i wouldn't know derek bailey if i stepped on him. i'm a herb ellis fan.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

oops, i meant to type "hardly any of it is recent and hardly any of it is free jazz.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

miles davis (bitches brew specifically... i can't figure out where to start in his weird period shit.)

On the Corner if that's what you mean by weird period shit.

Sun Ra is not really overrated. His rocker fans might be kind of annoying if they don't like any other jazz but in the jazz world he's really not rated highly enough IMO.

Can somebody please remove the Vince Guaraldi gif? Whatta mistake.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Sun Ra is not flipping overrated for chrissake.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 1 December 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

for too many annoying indie rockers, sun ra is the token jazz artist.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Thursday, 1 December 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

I come to the noise board to get away from the word 'Overrated', you guys are sounding like rock critics

I'm only really into about 5 or 6 of the 40 Sun Ra records I've heard, but those 5 or 6 records can not be fucked with)

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 1 December 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Foundation Maeght Nights Volumes 1 & 2
The Magic Sun (soundtrack to Phill Niblock film)
Strange Strings (by far the noisiest - I'm not that into Atlantis)
Secrets of the Sun
Concert for Comet Kohotek

and there's still tons of early 70's stuff I haven't heard

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 1 December 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

I love all of the typical noise-friendly stuff (Ornette, Ra, Ayler, Cecil Taylor, AEC, electric Miles, etc) and went through a big free jazz period when I was in college and before that a bebop period in high school.

Aside from that I love Mingus, Dolphy, Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Art Tatum, John McLaughlin, Don Cherry, Braxton, Headhunters, Tony Williams Lifetime, Herbie Hancock, Mose Allison, Bola Sete, some early Keith Jarret solo stuff, Dorothy Ashby - Afro Harping ... and many more!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

My fave RAs are:
Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy
Art Froms of Dimensions Tomorrow
Magic City
Space is the Place s/t
Angels & Demons at Play

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

"BREAKS"

i definitely got into jazz through hip hop. was always pretty interested in who sampled what. it's also what got me into funk and soul. my jazz record shelves are separated into two major categories. funky breaks/fusion and spiritual/free. i hardly listen to any jazz anymore. well any w/o vocals at least. i've gone through heavy free periods, but think that's over with as i get older and weaker.

here are some of my fave jazz albums i copy pasted from my post on the jazz poll thread:

Maurice McIntyre - Humility In Light of Creator
Eddie Gale - Black Music Happening
Eddie Gale - Ghetto Music
Bobby Hutcherson - Now!
Miles Davis - On The Corner
Ornete Coleman - Dancing In Your Head
Don Cherry - Mu, First and Second Parts
Don Cherry - Brown Rice (aka Don Cherry)
Andy Bey - Experience & Judgement
Archie Schepp - Atica Blues
Scorch Trio
Supersilent - 4
Max Roach - It's Time
Bill Cosby presents - Badfoot Brown & the Bunions Bradford Funeral & Marching Band
Abdullah Ibrahim & Johnny Dyani - Echos from Africa
Codona - 1
The Heath Brothers - Marchin' On
Alice Coltrane - Eternity
Alice Coltrane - Journey
Pharoah Sanders - Wisdom Through Music
John Klemmer - Blowin' Gold
Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine
Donald Byrd - Places & Spaces
Mahavishnu John McLaughlin - My Goal's Beyond
Weather Report - Mysterious Traveller
Bob James - One
Horace Silver - Silver 'n Percussion

dude who could hate on Guaraldi? we are talking about the man who wrote "Cast Your Fate to the Wind". U r all a bunch of corny fuxx. Next thing you'll tell me you hate Erroll Garner too.

Codona rules! its Colin Wolcott/ Don Cherry/ Nana Vasconcelos ... Codona 3 is my sentimental fave and one of the first jazz albums I really fell in love with. Heard "Hey Da Ba Doom" on late night public radio station when i wuz in high school and was transfixed. Totally spacy "ethnic" (well sure, look at the players!) vibes, very beautiful stuff. ECM sound, the whole bit...

five of the best records ever-

Count Basie / Billy Eckstine - Basie / Eckstine Inc.
Johnny Dyani 4tet - Song For Biko
Art Farmer / Benny Golson JAzztet - Meet the Jazztet
Art Ensemble of Chicago - People in Sorrow
Max Roach / Clifford Brown 5tet (w/ Rollins) - At Basin Street

Noise dudes should hear the first two Tony Williams Lifetime albums from when McLaughlin was in the band if they have not. Matter of fact, I should listen to my copies of them again. Fucking serious gnarly ass heavy psychedelic intensity.

I always really liked that late '60s Sun Ra collection that Blast First put out in '89 - Out There a Minute. Anyone know what the deal was with those tracks? Unreleased? From some late '60s LPs? Here's the track listing:

Love in Outer Space
Somewhere in Space
Dark Clouds with Silver Linings
Jazz and Romantic Sounds
When Angels Speak of Love
Cosmo Enticement
Song of Tree and Forest
Other Worlds
Journey Outward
Lights of a Satellite
Starships and Solar Boats
Out There a Minute

Scott, Herb Ellis was an early fave of mine as well, and I'll still take him or Kenny Burrell or Jim Hall or Tal Farlow or Barney Kessel or Bucky Pizzerelli or Billy Bauer or Wes Montgomery over Derek Bailey any day. And John Zorn sucks.

However, I resent the suggestion that Jewish Jazz is weird:

* Joey Baron, jazz drummer
* Jay Beckenstein, Dave Samuels, members of Spyro Gyra
* Bob Berg, jazz saxophonist
* Jane Ira Bloom, jazz saxophonist
* Michael Brecker, jazz saxophonist
* Randy Brecker, jazz trumpeter
* Bob Brozman, blues musician
* Uri Caine, jazz pianist
* Popa Chubby, blues singer
* Peter Cincotti, jazz pianist, singer (Jewish mother)
* Harry Connick, Jr., jazz pianist, singer (Jewish mother)
* Eddie Daniels, jazz clarinetist
* Bela Fleck, bluegrass musician
* Dave Frishberg, jazz pianist, singer/songwriter
* Stan Getz, jazz saxophonist
* Benny Goodman, jazz clarinetist
* David Grisman, bluegrass musician
* Fred Hersch, jazz pianist
* Lee Konitz, jazz saxophonist
* Steve Lacy, jazz saxophonist
* Mark Levine, jazz pianist, valve trombonist, teacher
* Mike Mainieri, jazz vibraphonist
* Herbie Mann, jazz flautist
* Shelly Manne, jazz drummer
* Mezz Mezzrow, jazz clarinetist
* Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, members of The Manhattan Transfer
* Joshua Redman, jazz saxophonist (Jewish mother)
* Buddy Rich, jazz drummer (Jewish father)
* Red Rodney, jazz trumpeter
* Raymond Scott, jazz musician & inventor
* Willie "The Lion" Smith, jazz pianist
* Artie Shaw, jazz clarinetist
* Ben Sidran, jazz pianist & producer
* Mel Torme, jazz singer
* John Zorn, jazz saxophonist

Out There A Minute is great! The third Tony Williams Lifetime (Ego?) is actually worth getting as well.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

Larry Young is in Lifetime, right? "Unity" is one of my favorite records.

Keith C (lync0), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

I think I prefer Dorothy Ashby's "The Rubaiyat of...". Afro-Harping is nice though. Also, the Ronnie Boykins album on ESP Disk is real nice n' loose.

I've been fancying a bit more jazz recently, free or otherwise. Maybe Grant Green!

Mestema (davidcorp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Lawrence of Newark is supposed to be awesome too. I've got Larry Young's Fuel. Good stuff.

Mestema (davidcorp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Is that Out There a Minute Ra compilation a good first pick? Always sturggled to pick an entry album. I always fancied Strange Celestial Road, for the cover as much as anything...

Mestema (davidcorp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

"Ego" has my (late) guitar teacher on it. It's pretty good.

Strange Strings

Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine

Do you really consider this to be a jazz album? It's great and all, but I always figured it would fall more into the "soul" category.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

it counts for "deep house" in this day n age

also:

Read the Ra bio "Space is the Place: The Lives of Sun Ra" by John F. Swzed. It's kind of the history of everything.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I hate the woman's vocals a lot of the time in the Space is the Place movie.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

you just hate women.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

also, John McLaughlin's "Devotion" is an incredibly heavy psych jam. Incredibly heavy bass & drums.. just lagging a tiny bit, while mclaughlin shreds overtop. The rest of the album (which is also called Devotion) is not as good. But that track is like 14 minutes long or something, so it's worth the $4 it will cost you.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

xpost: We went through this all before back when you hated The Fall.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

i've been through this many times since long before any of you knew jon. for a while he didn't even like black sabbath that much.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

I hate the woman's vocals a lot of the time in the Space is the Place movie.

Start with something like Magic City or Atlantis then.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Atlantis isn't that great. You guys are acting like I'VE NEVER HEARD SUN RA. Dicks.

Ian, blow me.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

The ESP Disks (Nothing Is, Heliocentric Worlds) are all good in the free vein. Concert For the Comet Kohoutek features a lot of amazingly wild organ noise (female singing though too).

My Brother The Wind Vol II is a noiseworty Ra record. The first side is groovy organ combo stuff but side 2 is all solo moog ramblings.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Heliocentric Worlds are ok.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine
Do you really consider this to be a jazz album? It's great and all, but I always figured it would fall more into the "soul" category.

it definitely straddles the line. there are a bunch of "jazz" artists where this was happening. almost anything produced by the Mizell brothers (donald byrd, bobbi humphrey, johnny hammond). but a ton of the stuff i listed above would fit in that not-strictly-jazz category. at least ten of my above picks are full of vocals. they could just as easily been filed in pop, soul, gospel, funk

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

that's what this thread was all about

Jazz in the late 70s / early 80s (jazz goes pop, jazz goes disco)

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

i bet Jon would be down with My Brother the Wind. that's a good suggestion. or The Singles, too, can't go wrong there..

Listened to some AEoC last night cuz of this thread.. and I just found out Muhal is playing this weekend! sweet.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I think The Singles comp is kind of patchy though and since it encompasses a broad range of periods I don't know if it's the best place to start, especially for someone who might not like the early big band stuff or the songs with vocals.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I like Ra's voice but I hate the cadence and tone of that woman in the movie.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

If you're listening to Ra just for noise, you're better off just listening to noise.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

I like Ra's voice but I hate the cadence and tone of that woman in the movie.

June Tyson didn't join the band until around '68 so anything before that is safe.

If you're listening to Ra just for noise, you're better off just listening to noise.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

"tim, i have that Out There a Minute Ra disc. on the back it says "This Compact Disc comprises Sun Ra's personal selection of rare Arkestra recordings from the late 60s made in and around 42nd st, new york city, planet Earth"."

Yeah I know, I was wondering what albums those tracks were from or if it was all unreleased stuff? That's some awesome stuff to have gone unreleased.

"Is that Out There a Minute Ra compilation a good first pick?"

I would think so.

"Larry Young is in Lifetime, right?"

Yeah, first album is just a trio of him, Williams, and McLaughlin. Second album adds Jack Bruce on bass.

What in the world is wrong with June Tyson?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

McLaughlin and Bruce also together on Jack's Things We Like lp from the same period...

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad that Vince came back.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

I read something once about how he can play a lot of Ornette Coleman solos note for note. (xp)

stence surely some zorn is jazz

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

he knows his ornette, sure.

xpost - jazz-ish, maybe, yeah ok, sure. but it's a sad state of affairs if when the subject jazz comes up, zorn's name is one of the first bandied about.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

AUTHENTICITY POLICE!!! WOOO WOOO

NEW YEAR'S EVE
Hemophiliac: John Zorn, Mike Patton & Ikue Mori
John Zorn's Electric Masada
Electric Masada w/ Mike Patton
Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

it's not about authenticity, it's about what SUCKS and what doesn't.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

i think hes jazz. he's just 'new york downtown' jazz which is its own thing i guess.

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

SUBJECTIVITY POLICE THEN

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

OH NOES I EXPRESSED AN OPINION ON A MESSAGE BORED THRED ASKING FOR OPINIONS!!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I sold my Naked City albums.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Is Frank Zappa jazz?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

zappa is jazz rock

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

zappa just plain sucks, sorry.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Zorn fuckin rules. Classic Guide to Strategy is an all-time beast of solo instrumentalism. Masada and Naked City two of the best ensembles of the 90s. and dig his playing on those John Patton records! Stence is insane.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

zappa is good. a noize dood should listen to lumpy gravy. stense is insane.

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

whatever dude, there's about 50 jazz dudes i'd list as ruling way before zorn.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

theres 50 funk doods id list before james brown. doesnt mean the dood sucks.

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Masada is very much in the jazz tradition (heads, solos, instrumentation).

Keith C (lync0), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I liked when Laura was talking to Joel about how she liked LCD Soundsystem and Joel was like BUT X IS BETTER. Great show, old man!

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Well, there's about 300 jazz dudes that totally rule, so Zorn being around say 50 is fine by me. I'd probably rank him lower than 50th, I dunno. I'm not saying he's Duke Ellington. but he does rule. It's a polyarchy.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Hey, why don't you guys turn this into another crappy list thread. That'd be great!!!!! 50 or 300, you pick!! Please!!!

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

joel hates everything.

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

but he did like (smog) once upon a time

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I'll bet there's some Zorn stuff I'd like. I never listened to the two Naked City albums I had, though (the first one w/ the dead guy on the cover and the one with the short songs and Eye was on it), and thought they were a little corny.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

the Unheard Music Series is so good.. I'm way behind, I need to get a ton of them

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 1 December 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

I listened to them numbers of times when I got them, but they sat there for years and then I sold 'em. You did not understand.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 1 December 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I read that as "I had two Naked City albums that I never listened to, but have heard these other two."\

Anyway, Naked City is not the greatest.

You can probably tell that I like the mysterioso stuff and the funky bass vamps. There's a part II if anyone is interested.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 5 December 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

awesome. i've never caught the Sun Ra bug. i've got a few albums (space is the place, lanquidity, out there a minute, concert for the comet..., and i think i have nuclear war on mp3s), but he never made me want to go out and pick up every one of his albums. i'm looking forward to listening to someone else's "greatest hits".

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 5 December 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

back to what ian and i were talking about upthread about roy ayers being "real jazz", here's a review of a Johnny Hammond Smith album. (not that you're necessarily a jazz purist)

Exposing a jazz purist to most recordings involving Fonce and Larry Mizell is much like shoving a vampire into daylight. Gambler's Life, the first of two Johnny "Hammond" Smith albums featuring the brothers' ambitious handiwork, isn't an exception. Watch a purist seek shelter in his dank cave whenever this album is within earshot. Smith switches to Fender Rhodes for most of the material, and the Mizells bring their ARPs (singe!), spirited if unpolished group vocal arrangements (crackle!), wah-wah guitars, and soaring instrumental arrangements made to shine on the dancefloor (sizzle!).

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 5 December 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

thanks walter, looking forward to this mix. I have Atlantis, Jazz in Silhouette & Heliocentric Worlds Vol.1, but none of them have ever really struck a chord with me. Maybe something on here will change that.

Keith C (lync0), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

i listened to that mix falling asleep last night and it was good. the end.
