there a thread on this yet?

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

saw x-press 2 playing the other week at the cross, dropping border community type stuff (i like soopertrack sure, but don't see how its any different from progtrance business), it doesn't surprise that digweeds done a set for fabric

weird thing about fabric is, while, out there, as a 'brand', 'product', fabric is a gentrifier, lifestyle accessory, 96 revisited, ministry of sound blueprint return, in the actual club itself, fabric is resolutely proletarian, ungentrified, mechanics from hertfordshire make up the base

calderdale in the 70s (gareth), Saturday, 17 December 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

weird thing is JESS GETS IT TOTALLY WRONG

he only talks about the boring tracks on the album (the first four, michael mayer) ... all the exciting stuff happens when slam / angel alanis / infusion / josh wink etc are involved ... those songs all have hummable hooks and stuff.

and yet he claims those are the songs "he can't remember" ... the nerve!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

i bought some more fabric mixes tonight. i even bought the MEAT KATIE volume - not as terrible as you'd think! not terrible at all!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

im not sure what "gentrification of dance music" is supposed to mean - hipsters clearing the dancefloor with ironic "raving"? or is this about home listening?

Yawn (Wintermute), Saturday, 17 December 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

home listening really, i guess

but it could apply in terms of social context as well. clubs that are shady, rough parts of town, local working class crowd etc, to those that are seen as safe (and prob whiter while we're at it). 'none of them badboys innit'.

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 December 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

i believe a hi-nrg remix of "like a prayer" was playing in the background at the time. (there was later a hi-nrg remix of "my humps." welcome to america.)

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

he also told me his favorite "band" was "those chemical guys," by which i found out he meant the chem bros, so take that for what it's worth.

but nah i meant coldcut not trip-hop in general

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 13 March 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

AH. but i think it would be interesting to trace the dots from "what trip-hop wanted to be / thought of itself as" to "music that had no aesthetic core".

in retrospect, i think the best trip-hop projects were the ones with monomaniacal "let's do the same thing 100x over" focus - mo'wax, major force west etc.

whatever murphy + goldsworthy want to say about those golden days ("oh, those guys just wanted to make sun ra / alice coltrane / silver apples / can / david axelrod mashup ripoffs" - as if that doesn't sound like the best thing ever anyway!) it's a lot better than post-everything multimedia moodfood.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 13 March 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

surely "oh, those guys just wanted to make sun ra / alice coltrane / silver apples / can / david axelrod mashup ripoffs" = skylab?

haha i would have agreed with you about the monomaniacal (and i do, really) thing until i had to review the new nightmares on wax record this weekend.

hey jess

are you excited about FABRICLIVE 25 - HIGH CONTRAST?

you should go to the website and listen to it.

the mellow tracks sound like level 42 / culture club / freez / late-era certain ratio sped up to 120 bpm (martyn, logistics, matrix vs futurebound, craggz + parallel forces, danny byrd, etc)

meanwhile the "rugged" tracks have this very depeche mode / human league / U2 sort of new wave melodic sensibility (it's very 80s britain BUT without sounding like electroclash) (check cyantific, state of mind, nero, total science, sparfunk + joe solo, high contrast, etc)

VERY POPPY AND MELODIC DRIVING NU-NRG DANCE MUSIC, PERFECT FOR CALISTHENICS, VACUUMING THE HOUSE OR DRIVING TO A DATE!!!! A+++++++!!!

STRONGO

are you like me? when the weather gets warm, do you start reaching for the circa 94-96 jungle classics? i tend to listen to techno and reggae in the fall and winter, and then when it gets to late april and it's 70 degrees at night it's all jungle and reggae and broken beat, all the time.

do you have reinforced's THE JUNGLE BOOK?

do you have SPEED LIMIT VOL 5?

do you know the track "burning passion" by urban shakedown?

when the weather's this warm, do you fall asleep in the afternoon, and then try to go out and get work done at a cafe, but your hands get so sweaty that the trackpad doesn't work right?

omg i totally lost track of this thread!

"are you like me? when the weather gets warm, do you start reaching for the circa 94-96 jungle classics?"

yes, but not quite as much since i don't have an automobile anymore.

"do you have reinforced's THE JUNGLE BOOK?"

yes, it is fab.

"do you have SPEED LIMIT VOL 5?"

yes, i caused a bit of a stir on the speed limit thread by claiming this was actually the best one.

"do you know the track "burning passion" by urban shakedown?"

i...think so.

"when the weather's this warm, do you fall asleep in the afternoon, and then try to go out and get work done at a cafe, but your hands get so sweaty that the trackpad doesn't work right?"

yes, but i don't have a laptop. it's more like i wake up and feel shitty for the rest of the evening and get little actually done.

"what is the thing to drink w/ jungle? mexican beer?"

probably a good choice. 40s for jump up, maybe. cheap whisky for techstep. this spring i enjoyed quite a run of lemonade/vodka concoctions.

"is there anything better than "last action hero"?"

potentially, but not while it's playing.

"what do you think are doc scott's "nasty habits"?"

well he doesn't look like he eats too well.

"why are ltj bukem + LGR aging so much worse than, say, alex reece, wax doctor or dj pulse?"

oh i don't agree with this at all.

"when did lemon d turn hard?"

arguably with "welcome to l.a." but most definitely with "fade ii black."

Bea Arthur - Lost COmic GEnius ? (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 25 June 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

"burning desire" is track 5 on "speed limit: vol 5". best track ever.

the fuckablity of late picasso (vahid), Sunday, 25 June 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

ok so officially it's called "burning passion" but on the sleeve for "speed limit vol 5" it's misprinted as "urban shakedown - burning".

"burning desire" = wrong

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Thursday, 21 September 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

the reason i was going to post about the dream on yr dance trends thread is because dream rub and tug's general idea was that the future for disco singles and edits would be based on the drum sounds of heavy metal (!) and more of a hard rockin feel.

WE SMOKED A STRANGE BLUE "JOINT" WHICH PRODUCED YELLOW SMOKE FLECKED WITH ORANGE SPARKLES

while conducting a 'fun with fireworks' session on a camping trip once my friend with military connections busted out a distress flare in the middle of the forest we were staying in and ripped it open. the resulting glow sent everything red except the campfire, which wnet blue-green.

two years later he pulled the same stunt on new year's eve on his own balcony in a crowded apartment development. the roffles stopped (for him) when he realised the magnesium being shed by the burning flare was marking the balcony tiles.

also you should give horsepower's "to the rescue" another shot. it's actually a really great disc! obv nowhere near as good as the 1st one, but it stands on its own merits, i think.

i think it probably says something that i've enjoyed the various production email more than any other dubstep related disc. the best parts of the burial record just sounded like listening to horsepower on the radio with the dial stuck between stations.

"to the rescue" is in my closet somewhere. maybe i'll pull it out this weekend.

the genre took a wrong turn when it decided to worship digidub instead of maurizio

bo janglin (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

but what's "the point" of dubstep?

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

well i was going to say it's for ex-dnb heads who were pissed at girls going back to dnb clubs over the last couple of years but perhaps that bizarre "skanking" photo on the other thread proves me wrong.
