skirts are one of god's great gifts.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, to WOMEN! Do you realize how much more comfortable they are than pants? Hallelujah.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

women and men can agree on some things, sometimes.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

pants are more comfortable, i think

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

girls butts look better in tight jeans than in almost anything else.

Are you forgetting pencil skirts?

Never.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

What are pencil skirts? At least once a week Laurel uses some fashion term I've never heard before.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

BIKES!

MAX BRODY, ULTIMATE ROADIE (ddb), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Slim, tapered skirts that narrow toward the hem, Jay. Max emphasis on hips & etc.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

tight jeaaaans. and those shorts-like underwares.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost) Oh, I love boyshorts, too.

Adam, I was being disingenuous: I'd heard the term "pencil skirt" before. I didn't know what it meant, though.

Also, you are married.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

I hate pants because they are always too short on me besides like 2 types of jeans. Only skirts.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ally is wise.

I had beers last night, but I was tired and in weird headspace -- sorry, Jon & anyone else. When will it be warm enough for bikes again?? No good if I have to wear gloves to go to brunch.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

How about "all skinny people wearing all-black & with helmets on look the same from a distance of about 30 feet." Now shut up.

That said, the monstertrack vid just made me SO happy. I will take it to heart and try to be less of a pansy next time I am stuck on fucking Flatbush.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 10 March 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

and BEER!

MEOW!!

KILLY WHO? (ddb), Friday, 10 March 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

I WISH. Ddb, you are my NYC bike guru, you know. Not so much for maintenance because for that I have myself and the nice people on Vbilt...but if I ever need to know what's kosher here, I will call you up.

Oh, XXXP. No skirts for groceries! Skirts are for biking to the social club in warm weather to drink vodka on the patio. Sooooon, my pretties, soon it will all be ours.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

aw yeah, patios and vodka (well, whiskey/beer) and bike riding in skirts spell REAL springtime. screw this rain today. i want to thread needles too, but still have some bus fear. (and need less wide handlebars. i can't remember the cool-word for handlebars right now...)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus, the buses are nice to me, esp on the back streets like Dean where idiots double-park so no one can pass -- buses usually wait for me to wave them by. It's stupid drivers on Flatbush that freak me out, and taxis. And yeah, I know: one of these days I'm going to have to ride somewhere NOT downtown Bklyn. Best case scenario is bike to Wburg and no more B48 bus!!

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking of which, have question: does night riding strictly require lights? Front/back/both? So far I've gotten away with short trips home from bar & etc but am starting to feel like I'm being stupid.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

i don't have lights, but that's because (a) my bike/bag are super reflecty and (b) i haven't gotten around to it. All you really need is a rear blinky.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I LOVE THIS THREAD.

I USE REAR RED BLINKER MOST OF THE TIME...ITS DEF. A GOOD IDEA.

I HAVE A WHITE FLASHER FOR FRONT (THX CUTTY)...THAT I BUST OUT IF I KNOW IM GONNA BE GOING AGAINST TRAFFIC OR FEELING SKETCHED OUT BY BAD DRIVERS/BAD BIKERS.

LAUREL, U SHOULD DEF GET A RED BLINKER...REFLECTORS REALLY DONT WORK.

THIS THREAD AND AWESOME NYC WEATHER IS MAKING ME WANT TO RIDE SO BAD....MY BIKE IS BEGGIN TO GET OUT OF THE OFFICE!!!!!!

GBX MEET ME AT MANHATTAN BRIDGE, NYC SIDE 6PM....FOR A QUICK BROOKLYN JAUNT.

:(

SIGH!!! (ddb), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

;_;

I just got lunch! ON MY BIKE!!!!

gbx (skowly), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

Okay! One red blinker TO GO, plus new chain needed. Also, once the days get longer I think I'm going to hop home from work and ride bike in to the Mass Transit workshop (or whoever that is) and get help balancing my brakes & figuring out why she hates 1st gear so much. Excitement!!

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

I LOVE PUTTING ON CHAINS...U USE THE BEST BIKE TOOL EVER!!!!!

TEH CHAIN BREAKER!!

GOOD TIMES!!!! (ddb), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

what is this "skirts are not for groceries" claim??

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't needed a chain breaker yet, mine has a pre-broken link thing that pops off! But for the new one I probably will need to tool up. Also, I think the best bike tool is the clamp that holds brake calipers closed while you tighten the fuckers...otherwise I thought that was what ROOMMATES were for but they whine about it and you have to gag them with ball-bearing grease.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

And I think I'm out of grease. Anyway, Ally, I was just declining to wear a skirt when I go out for groceries & toothpaste tomorrow...because if I have to make emergency repairs at Atlantic Center, I wd like to not be worrying about bending over bike to wrench on rear axle. It's a drag.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Oh where is yr sense of adventure gone?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

It fled the last time someone outside the deli next door called me "Loosey Goosey" for putting leg over bike, loudly and in front of a bunch of other assholes who thought it was hilarious. Can do without the commentary, thanks.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

Laurel,

Quick question: who the hell are you and where did you come from?

Steve

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

Ask jaymc, he has the file!

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

I need a network plug-in to jaymc's database.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

Steve, I came from the swamp, I mean, the West Michigan lakeshore. I'm uh, me. I like books and Bud out of a bottle; dislike onions and the endless paperwork that is my job today. Have been around ILX for a while, took a few years' break and came back post-London bombing and just kind of stuck.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Laurel once came to my house. This was many years ago. We hid in the kitchen with my gay singing friend who I don't know what happened to. Because...prominent ILX persona was in the living room...and also, we needed to smoke.

Just so y'all know about it.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

prominent... you mean ned?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yes but I was having class about it, unlike some people.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

Hey nice to meet you Laurel.

I'm Steve Shasta, semi-professional wakeboarder.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

i'm just like a holiday. no class.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

Always need to smoke!! Nice to meet you, Steve.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

it was a better story when it was the three of you smoking a joint in the kitchen while ned sat in the living room, quietly scrutinizing your cd collection.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't say what we were smoking! Nor did I say Ned was being quiet! because...he was not.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 11 March 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

i'm headed to the shop right now -- you need anything?

gbx (skowly), Saturday, 11 March 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

Aw thanks, dude, but I just got back from picking one up. AND one of the boys at the shop was wearing a Tshirt from last Saturday! But I'm going to need someone to hold the calipers closed while I thread & tighten cable -- you game?

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 11 March 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

aw, Laurel. It can be fixed though!

BIKE RIDING IS THE GREATEST THING EVER, TODAY
still cold out, but blue sky, some warmth in the sun - i rode up to the river and it was still mostly frozen over but point is i RODE (+ was not freezing). awesome.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 11 March 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

i agree. i biked around my neighborhood and i am going to bike along the creek with my dad in an hour! hurray for bikes!

killy (baby lenin pin), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, it can be fixed and I'm almost done! Although embarrassingly, I'm known at the bike shop as "that girl who accidentally took apart the 3-speed hub last summer", which is hardly the legacy I'd choose...luckily the husband & wife owners are very, very cool.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

MAX BRODY, ULTIMATE ROADIE (ddb), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Brian, you should have! Called, I mean. Ended up using twine to tie the brakes shut and it worked fine but I would have gone for a ride w/ front brakes only, in a pinch -- it was so gorgeous I wished I had something to do besides run errands, always assuming you don't mind my snail's pace. Am going for a drink on Hoyt St later, probably riding over even tho it's dark; how do I waited for bus?? I won't be back online tonight or probably in the AM so txt me if necessary.

I got out of a club on thursday night and this random dude got me to ride his friend's bike back to his place in the city. was cheaper than taxi! I came very close to binning it at one stage, but ended up gracefully dropping off the curb and continuing onwards. fixed-gear though, hard work at 5am.

WAU WEIRD:

after posting to this thread, i walked out of my office for a few minutes. across the street is a diff. hotel's loading dock that is guarded by police all day (it is a military hotel). there they had, hancuffed and face down on the ground, a GIRL WEARING A SKIRT and next to her was a BIKE and a backpack that they were searching. they had removed from the bag what appeared to be an empty bottle of BEER.

i was so distracted by this sight and the coincidence of it all that i walked right into a lampost. i'm holding ice to my fucking face over here.

Those bubblegum rims are LIKE WO, but I'll bet that bike weighs 48 lbs.

I rode my upright 3-spd last weekend after a few months on the road bike and I almost ran into cars/fell over/had my own highly comic scenario! Perfect posture, spread-apart hands, lack of foot secure-ment, shorter cranks, different braking required...very weird all 'round. Also: HEAVY.

oh hay, so yesterday as i was coming home late at night, my bike skipped gears and there was a guy riding ahead of me on the street and when we were stopped at the next stop sign he asked if he wanted me to have him look at my bike b/c he was a bike mechanic, and i'm, like, okay (b/c he seemed just fine), and so he does the total check it out bike mechanic thing and sees that the cable that goes to the back derailer (right?) is loose (he then tightened it yaay) - and in looking at it i see that some fucker tried to pry my lock off in that crowbar btwn lock and frame way and thereby put a dent in the cable (and maybe loosened cable too, though it had prob loosened on its own before) AND put a small dent in the bottom of my frame!! grrrrrrrrrarrr

it is an old steel rockhopper, so it's pretty solid, but agh i hope it has not srsly damaged bike structure - it's not like i'm going mtn biking on it or anything, but i don't want to hit a pothole one day and have my bike collapse...

(maybe should ask on an ile bike thread but i kinda feel i have done my ile time for today)

rrrobyn, Thursday, 7 June 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Rrrob, I think it's probably fine...? Dents are more troubleseome as an indicator that something has been done to the bike that you don't know about -- you never know if it was hit by a car or crunched under something in a way that did real structural damage -- but in your case you KNOW what was done, and that it won't have affected the fork, the rear alignment, etc etc important stuff. One thing you can do to make yrself feel better is to take a straight edge (metal ruler, or something rigid that you KNOW to be straight) and line it up with the dent to see if both sides of that tube around the dent are still even. If they are, I wouldn't worry.

Haha this advice comes from someone who rides with a bent fork, a bent seatstay, a front brake only, and many very questionable parts. But still.

Laurel, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

thanks laurel :)
the tube sides appear even - dent just looks bigger to my eye b/c it is my poor old bike and i love it so

I thought you meant Isadora from Dawson's creek

Heave Ho, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

Who from what?

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

It was some show, I've never seen it either, but I googled "Hello Isadora" and that's what came up :)

Heave Ho, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

That's disappointing.

One of Aleister Crowley's acolytes, the self-styled Mary Destri gave Duncan the fatal scarf the day of her death.

Trick question. It doesn't run out.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

Judging from the one roommate I've had like this, people who work at boutiques are the worst people in the world.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, there are def exceptions but I think maybe boutique people are either VERY cool and helpful or else godforsaken awful -- takin' it to extremes, maaan.

Laurel, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

Red Beri, for instance, on Flatbush, the owner is super nice and an ACTUAL grown-up independent person -- brusque maybe but v helpful and she does source all the stuff herself so can answer questions about it. And frankly that place is only mid-price range compared to say Castor & Pollux around the corner, which is the kind of boutique I have deep, deep reservations about.

Laurel, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not talking about owners. I'm talking about the scum that works for them.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

I've been dropped by friends, the other girls wouldn't talk to me b/c I wasn't ONE OF THEM, etc fill in the lame-O blanks. Maybe that was just how they like to have fun?

Laurel, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

laurel don't stereotype. the girls i know arnt like that. also, elmo, that pro wrestler style schtick has been apart of the rollerdery since the 50's.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/99/Roller_Derby_1950.jpg
these roller derby girls from the 1950's just want to be in bands but don't have enough ambition.

chaki, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

seriously, none of the girls i know are like that either.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

carne asada, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

Dude, pretty weak rhetoric sauce to imply hipstre rollerderby has any real connection to og rollerderby

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

rockabilly girls like the 50s...you're KIDDING

bell_labs, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

well one of the girl's mother i know was involved and coached her and shit. in la its still a thing kids go to and not so much of a hipster thing, though punk rock looking girls are involved. laurel is obviously bitter about something that happened between her friends and is blaming all girls that roller skate in a league for it.

chaki, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

How is my factual experience "stereotyping"??

Laurel, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

how is punk rock not hipstre?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

Haha also true.

Laurel, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

theres alot of punk looking people that work here in my office but my job is not a "hipster" job, jon.

chaki, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

how is punk rock not hipstre?

uhm, easily? and by definition?

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

Chaks, maybe E and W coasts are just different on this one?

Punk (or "punk") and hipster here are...inseparable at this point.

Laurel, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

fuck this, i am not having a conversation about "what's punk rock" in 2007.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

laurel, your basing how girls that roller skate in a derby league act on a bitter experience you had with your friends.

chaki, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not a hipster.
