Cambodian is like a cross between thai and vietnamese. I used to kinda like it, I like how they have 1,000,000 things on the menu, and how they have a note saying "if you're in a rush to see a movie, can we suggest the following 3 entrees?" Why? Because they're so damn slow. Seriously the worst service ever. Dare to sit in the porched in area...

Really good thai, well I've only been to Sri Pa Pa or whatever once, the super place in queens that everyone talks about, that was pretty amazing. I used to love the park slope place near 2nd st on the 2nd floor. I like Tuk Tuk in my hood. Really good basil fried rice, hot-pot dumplings (peanuts and radish) are super.

We had the Shanghai Crab and the pork dumplings (as well as the scallion pancakes). Not bad. There's a place in SF that makes the best Shanghai dumplings but the price is seriously out of control.

Tea & Sympathy on Greenwich:
-more cramped than mamoun's
-pitiful chav wait staff
-neurotic proprietor (see "Nicky's rules")
-horribly overpriced (7$ mac&cheese side dish)
-absolutely delicious

I recommend the welsh rarebit w/ bacon, but I don't recommend the restaurant.

new green bo used to be better. they still have the best vegetable dumplings i've ever had, though. dan, you might have been there. i had my birthday party there maybe 5 yrs ago and eveyrone complained because the food was weird, not sweet and sour-type stuff.
joe's shanghai is always annoyingly crowded, but their soup dumplings are great. goody's is pretty much the same quality, but never as packed with tourists. their pork shoulder is soooo good,

Kinara is the best -- and worst restaraunt. Sietsema turned me and the gf on to it, it seems you can never get a good curry in the Slope, but they do it right. I need vindaloos hot, and they'll throw fire it up for you, unlike all the other bland Slope places.

we were down in south slope once and walked in to eat there after ordering from them many times. totally awful decor, like these corny black chinese restaraunt style plastic tables and cold tile floor. they even have a 50% off eat-in special, and it's still empty. the reason why their delivery range is so huge is cos that's all the business they do.

get the crab curry. it is amazing, and for the $12 or $13 it costs, you probably get about $10 worth of lump crab meat, it is a hugely generous portion.

St. Clair is still there. But there's a better diner that opened up just down the street, Salonike, or the Carroll Garden's Diner. Their menu says "Where else are you gonna go?". It's 24 hours and standard diner fair, but suprisingly great hamburgers. I used to go there a ton, not so much lately.

How is Pioneer in Red Hook?

I used to go to Jakes on Columbia. Not the best, but good at times and nice people and at the time it was cool to go all the way down there. Now it's yet another Brooklyn resteraunt row, which brings me to my latest fave....

Pit Stop. French bistro on Columbia. GREAT hamburgers, ratotuille, eggs, merguez etc.

pit stop is nice. only had burgers + beers. weird strip there with that out of the way bookstore. I hate that mexican place Alma, everyone big ups it, but I had a horrible meal there and the crowds are a joke.

hstencil, the story I heard re: Biscuit's closing was that the owner just got tired of all the work he had to put into the place. owner is a classically trained French chef and got sick of restaraunt politics so he opened Biscuit. maybe he went back to high cuisine? it was an abrupt end, but they went out on top.

YES! I had a terrible time at Alma. Wait. Bad service, annoying crowds, and food that wasn't so special.

The bookstore is very cool, they have readings, sell local chap books, looks like a nice place to hang out and chill, if you're in the area. I've only been in once. Bookstore fans should keep supporting the Community book store on Court St, which is great, as is Book Court further up Court.

brunch in nyc for relatives: danal, public (very pricey otherwise but brunch is a good value), 9th street market, lucien*, les halles, cafe orlin, clinton street baking company, poeme, cafe habana.

*same menu for dinner and lunch so not a good opition if everyone wants pancakes, but great nevertheless plus if the owner is there he'll volunteer to cook you eggs and maybe give you free wine

it's way cute & corny but the restaurant in the basement of the Whitney Museum up on Madison ("Sarabeth's")is very parent-friendly and the food is good if a bit dainty and afterwards you always can sight-see, check the museum, go to central park etc.

the Whitney basement outpost of Sarabeth's is pretty dark and depressing, I recall, though a remodel might have made it nicer, though it might be suitable if you find the other locations too cutesy. also, I think the food is probably better at the "real" ones.

Anyway, if you think of a conventional "verse/chorus" structure, the verse part (although there is no singing) is this chunky sounding Nile Rodgers style guitar -- maybe a lil tougher sound than Nile gets -- and then the "chorus" part are these heavenly wordless vocals that go "AAAAAAAAHHHHHH" "AAAHH-AAAHH-AAAHHHHH" in a descending pattern for a couple of bars (maybe also some strings in the background?). And then it slams back into that guitar part. It's totally blissful. Definitely late-70s. U know?

there is a very nice man with a cart near the corner of delancey and norfolk selling the following: curry squid, curry fish balls, pork skin & radish, rice noodle w/ shrimp, and fried rice. nothing is more that $1.50. i just had the rice noodle w/ shrimp - fat noodles rolled up tight with scallions and tiny shrimp and covered with sriracha and brown sauce. so delicious, even if the refined carbs are going to make me puff out like a chubby balloon.

umm, nice try Lauren, I've been there twice. I said, "wow, I've always wanted to eat dinner INSIDE AN IPOD".

it was okay, I was really uncomfortable, too small.

My sister, the pastry chef, was dating a guy who was a sous-chef for like Ducasse or someone, and he said he went there and had the duck and it was great. My sister was suprised because he's one of those eat bone-marrow animal part foodies who always "mocks" vegans. My sister's all like, dude, that was MOCK duck, and he was like no way. Sure enough...

Republic was TOO LOUD TO HAVE A CONVERSATION.

But like, I live less then 10 blocks from Sri Pra Pha, I'm ruined for Thai food forever. Actually, around the corner is another lesser known place, Khao Homm, which is also wonderful if a little more standard. More low-key atmosphere. In any case, both of those places destroy all other Thai food I've had in NYC or elsewhere.

so at 2am I'm driving home by myself and think, why, this is the first real oppurtunity I've had to check out the taco truck. So I get off the BQE, drive a few blocks past my house to the 52nd st. 7 stop on roosevelt ave and sure enough, there it is, with two dudes waiting in front. I wait a bit, order 2 tacos, pollo and carnitas, wait a minute, tell them I'll eat it there, so she doesn't put any hot sauce on, leaving it up to me. She hands me 1 plate w/ two tacos, the aforementioned meats, some onions and cilantro and that's it, proper taco style. I put on the hot sauce and squeeze some limes and by 2:10 I'm eating two of the best tacos I've ever had. Fucking awesome. I wonder how late the truck stays there...

mr selzer, being a man of humor and taste, what are you feelin on this sound of silvah record by the lcd sound system? im diggin it this am, but this is a music that has gotten quite away from me (or vise versa -- there are a coupla reasons we euthanized Repellent, after all) so im askin...

to play Rock Critic for a blink, its striking me as a damned fine comment on the (us) kids and growin up and/or livin in these days, and throws up some damned fine little pop, but is there more (or "less")? is it just plain good? is there too much thinking and smirking amidst the fun? is it too cute for anyones good?

i'll say this, it does make me think kraftwerk is a halfway decent idea again for the 1st time in a forever long time.

b) Di Faras. No other pizza is worthy. Any of the classic brick oven places will do in a pinch, Lombardis, Patsys, Grimaldis. If you want just your average street slice there's places like those on Bleeker that are decent, and every hood has a few that standout, but the risk is you'll get something nasty. Di Fara's is worth the trip, get on the Q train during the week and go out for lunch. Google for more info.

peter luger steakhouse will hurt your bank account but not fatally. it's worth it imo.

been to the bar at keens plenty of times for the sick selection of bourbons but never ate there

I don't really think there is such a thing as a budget steakhouse in nyc. if you just want something more basic and not a big porterhouse, someplace like Steak Frites in Union Square or any french bistro type joint should be fine ....

NO NO NO to steak frites. i think it was probably good once upon a time, but it's seriously mediocore to bad now and also very pricey. the eponymous entree is about $30, which makes it more than steak for two at peter luger (i'm pretty sure) when you adjust. luger is expensive, but the last time i was there i paid $55 for my share in a large amount of outstanding beef, creamed spinach, hash browns, whiskey (they have surprisingly reasonable drink rates), etc etc. i consider that to be pretty good value. for comparison, my parents spent almost double that per person at smith & wollensky's last time they were in chicago. perhaps try luger at lunch, if your schedule permits.
as for hot dogs in the city, i prefer dash dogs on rivington. gray's are nice and cheap but nothing out of the ordinary.

hmm, pizza. definitely go to di fara but go for weekday lunch as dan says unless you enjoy 2 to 3 hour waits (no exaggeration), and the original patsy's in east harlem is much better than dan implies. a plain pie from there is pretty much thin crust perfection.

all i know is that i am going to eat a shit-ton of pizza while i'm there. when i was there in november i think i had pizza about every four hours. i left one bar, got pizza, then hopped in a cab (with more pizza) and went to another bar. i think i'll wear like cargo pants with the pockets lined with tin foil and always have a couple of slices on me at all times.

gabbned...Di Faras isn't a patsy's/tontoros type place. All those places are sit down brick oven type places, Di Faras is just a standard pizza place with a standard pizza oven and a few standard dirty tables. Only the ingredients and the way he makes the pizza are special.

oh lauren, if you like grandma pie, there's a place near me, just a dumpy pizzeria called Peppinos, but their Grandma slice is unbelievable on a good day, onions carmelized to the point that when you pick up the pizza your fingers are coated with gooey brown sugar goodness.

I've had good potato slices, but they're usually super classy simple pies, really thin crust, thin potato, pretty light. There's a bizarre fancy italian place near me that's in the back of a warehouse on an industrial road called S'apporo D'Ischia and their potato pie actually tasted healthy, if a bit lacking in strong flavors.

if you don't object to paying $15 or $16 for an individual-sized pizza OTTO on 8th st & 5th Ave is really quite good, the most approachable of mario batali's hyped restaurant empire. nice italian wines too. it's pricey for pizza and definitely not old-school style -- grilled not ovened -- but the clam pie is awes.

if you mean the contraversy about doh closing difaras in general and not just chowhound's response....whatever, Di Fara's is dirty as hell, always has been...and I've eaten in worse. Getting swept up in a doh sweep where tons of places are getting notices isn't too scary. If you've looked at the doh ratings online, you wouldn't eat out at all.

Just hit Spicy and Tasty. You know what? It was spicy and tasty. Best cold sesame noodles ever. Wasn't sure what to get because even the "vegetable" options have ingredients like "pork blood". Will have to go back. Flushing is CRAZY. Right next to a malaysian place that's supposed be great.

When the owners closed the original Roosevelt Avenue basement-level space, located in a somewhat seedy mini-mall, fans of the iconic pepper and its multiple Sichuan applications mourned.

on the high-end, Saul is supposed to be good but I've never had dinner there. The Grocery is the highest rated and most manhattan-esque. Chestnut however, is very classy and very delicious and I highly recommend it. Lower down the $$$ pole, Cafe Cubana or whatever the Cuban place is called, is pretty good, but for better bets, go around the corner on Atlantic Avenue...Bachus is one of brooklyns better french bistro type places, wed. night is 2 for 1 entrees, and next door is Stan's Place, really pretty good and pretty fun "new orleans" food, including crazy tasty beignets. It's also a great brunch spot.

Even cheaper/more casual is Zaytoons on smith st., pretty classic and dependable middle-eastern food, probably better then the more hardcore places on atlantic.

I'd say go for Chestnut, it's in the heart of Smith St. and is really good. You probably should get a reservation.

I went back to Spicy and Tasty last night and it totally delivered. I had a diced chicken with peanuts in spicy sauce and it was basically the tastiest kung-pao chicken in the world. We also had some sort of sweet rice balls in hot wine desert thing that almost made me throw up.

If you do sunnyside/woodside, the best places are De Mole on the southside, incredibly cheap, incredibly high-quality mexican food, and Sri Pra Phai for thai over in woodside. Neither are manhattany. Both are authentic and high quality and cheap.

I don't have nearly the distinguished palettes of Dan & Lauren, but my take on the Smith St environs:

The Bedouin Tent on Atlantic makes their own flatbread fresh for your order, that's the most fantastic thing I've noticed about them so far. Mostly I've only had take-out falafel but they have a lovely back garden and a wider menu.

Fragole on Court St (near Carroll) is my top top Italian place. Everything I've ever had there was good (with the possible exception of desserts, I don't think sweets are their specialty ) and it's hard to convince myself to order anything BESIDES the rigatoni bolognese, it's so rich and stewed-all-day-y. Their bruscheta also, despite having only four ingredients, has always been amazingly sweet and complex-tasting. absolutely...Fragole is a gem. It's just up the street from the much more famous and hip Frankies, which, admittedly, is awesome but always has a wait. I used to go to Fragole a lot when I lived down there (before that it was Max on Court and even before that, Mignon, which was great), and have actually driven down to carrol gardens for a "double-date" of sorts there.

Bedouin Tent is pretty good, but I don't think it's as good as Zaytoons. They're similar, as are Olive Vine in Park Slope, which has gotten really bad, and Black Iris on dekalb, which has good pitzas.

Oh man, Ian, that last visit to Academy was like, my one alloted record store shopping trip for the year. Actually, I'm going to Jerry's in pittsburgh this weekend which I'm excited about. I didn't get much good disco during that last Academy visit last week, though some nice basics like Knock on Wood...was happier with my cheap rock buys (Roxy's Manifesto, Bryan Ferry's first solo, The Strangler's Gospel..., and TWO vintage old-school boston scene Propellor 7"s from the Post-Punk/DIY bin.

As far as Chinatown, I haven't really eaten there much so I have no favorites. As mentioned above I've been going to Spicy and Tasty in Flushing, which is seriously good.

Back in queens, finally hit Himalayan Yak...the tibet stuff was just ok, but the Nepali stuff was really good, this dry vegetable dish that was out of this world.

the only time i went by setagaya, the line was way too long. very excited about ichiran opening in gpoint.

I mentioned this on the fried chicken thread but Unidentified Flying Chickens in Jackson Heights was pretty cool

"hot" and "soy garlic" flavors both get the thumbs-up. we asked the waitress abt spicy mustard flavor and she dissuaded us ... I think that one and sweet & spicy just come out of a jar but the other two are original recipes. the skin is real thin & crispy and not greasy. I'm not the kinda guy who eats three huge drumsticks and six wings at a sitting but at this place I devoured me some chickenz.

zabb city was pretty great! we got everything thai spicy, and they have a scale of 3, 4, or 5 stars. we got everything 4 stars and it was definitely more than enough. i took four bites and immediately ordered sticky rice and a beer. the waitress asked if it was spicy enough and laughed at us and then brought us a pitcher of water. my cold is totally gone now though.

had the pork labb, duck salad, and zabb noodle. and fried banana with honey for desert.

I'm not super into those tacos...Jeremy gets them ever time we do Dazzle Ships, but they're too messy! They start out good then they start adding the sauce, and adding, and adding!

My mind is boggling about the taco cart Siestema mentioned where they press fresh tortillas for your taco as you order it. That's pretty awesome.

The duck salad at both Zabbs was fantastic. Zabb Queens was a bit more refined, the apples and onions chopped finer and just more interesting, but Zabb City had bigger bits of apples and onion and added pineapple, which was pretty awesome. The duck itself was the same. The only other thing I've had at Zabb Queens was a shrimp dish someone on chowhound recommended, and something called Crispy rice and pork skin, which I miscontrued to mean crispy pork skin. The rice was crispy. The pork skin was not. It was the texture of skin, and I can't say I liked it very much.

I went to the new Arepas place in Astoria last night, pretty good and they were very nice. Got a free refill of their brown sugar lemonade, which was awesome.

ZABB was the only restaurant in NYC whose waiter asked if we wanted our Pad Kaprow to be served authentic Thai style. We said yes and to our delight, the chicken came diced, the way they serve it in Thailand.

This was good to read. The first time I ordered Kaprow at Sri, I was suprised the chicken came pretty much ground up, where I was used to the american thai version which is basically like the chicken you'd find in a chinese take-out. I wondered if the was just Sri or if that was the real way to do it. I've ordered it once or twice since then and sometimes they even ask "ground?" because I guess people come expecting the "usual".

zaragoza is great. they have plastic forks! what i do usually is eat a bit of the filling with said fork, then it's easier to wrap the taco up without spilling anything.

Zabb City was v v good, would eat again. My favorite was the duck salad; it had plenty of duck and it was crispy and had a really great flavor. The soup seemed kind of like normal soup, but we got it last and my taste buds were a little worn out from the intensity of the labb & duck salad. I think next time I might want to try one of the curries, even though they're not a specialty of the region. Or maybe one of the regular noodle dishes.

I've eaten smith st. zaytoons so much that one of the guys who used to work there bought me a drink at Boat once. That was weird. Anyway, it never made me sick, though when I got the chicken kebab platter for delivery it was sometimes undercooked. That's pretty gross. Their lentil soup is AWESOME, so thick you can eat it with a fork.

The Cup sucks, but Cafe Bar has some ok stuff.
