HA HA.
Cambodian is like a cross between thai and vietnamese. I used to kinda like it, I like how they have 1,000,000 things on the menu, and how they have a note saying "if you're in a rush to see a movie, can we suggest the following 3 entrees?" Why? Because they're so damn slow. Seriously the worst service ever. Dare to sit in the porched in area...
Really good thai, well I've only been to Sri Pa Pa or whatever once, the super place in queens that everyone talks about, that was pretty amazing. I used to love the park slope place near 2nd st on the 2nd floor. I like Tuk Tuk in my hood. Really good basil fried rice, hot-pot dumplings (peanuts and radish) are super.

Kinara is the best -- and worst restaraunt. Sietsema turned me and the gf on to it, it seems you can never get a good curry in the Slope, but they do it right. I need vindaloos hot, and they'll throw fire it up for you, unlike all the other bland Slope places.
we were down in south slope once and walked in to eat there after ordering from them many times. totally awful decor, like these corny black chinese restaraunt style plastic tables and cold tile floor. they even have a 50% off eat-in special, and it's still empty. the reason why their delivery range is so huge is cos that's all the business they do.
get the crab curry. it is amazing, and for the $12 or $13 it costs, you probably get about $10 worth of lump crab meat, it is a hugely generous portion.

hstencil, the story I heard re: Biscuit's closing was that the owner just got tired of all the work he had to put into the place. owner is a classically trained French chef and got sick of restaraunt politics so he opened Biscuit. maybe he went back to high cuisine? it was an abrupt end, but they went out on top.

Danny Wang played it out at a gig last year ... I wish I would have asked the fellow Maroon what it was after his set finished but I forgot
Anyway, if you think of a conventional "verse/chorus" structure, the verse part (although there is no singing) is this chunky sounding Nile Rodgers style guitar -- maybe a lil tougher sound than Nile gets -- and then the "chorus" part are these heavenly wordless vocals that go "AAAAAAAAHHHHHH" "AAAHH-AAAHH-AAAHHHHH" in a descending pattern for a couple of bars (maybe also some strings in the background?). And then it slams back into that guitar part. It's totally blissful. Definitely late-70s. U know?

it was okay, I was really uncomfortable, too small.
My sister, the pastry chef, was dating a guy who was a sous-chef for like Ducasse or someone, and he said he went there and had the duck and it was great. My sister was suprised because he's one of those eat bone-marrow animal part foodies who always "mocks" vegans. My sister's all like, dude, that was MOCK duck, and he was like no way. Sure enough...
Republic was TOO LOUD TO HAVE A CONVERSATION.
But like, I live less then 10 blocks from Sri Pra Pha, I'm ruined for Thai food forever. Actually, around the corner is another lesser known place, Khao Homm, which is also wonderful if a little more standard. More low-key atmosphere. In any case, both of those places destroy all other Thai food I've had in NYC or elsewhere.

What does Dan S. think about the Pink Pony? Once I had the pepper steak and it was fantastic. Once I had the cassoulet and it was gross. Haven't tried other stuff. Most things seem overpriced.

Has anyone ever been to the restaurant directly left of Panna II?I think it's just a decoy.
If Panna II is the one on the top right side in that quad of Indian places, it suxx. Terrible terrible food not even to be redeemed by absurdly cheap prices.

This time I was more drunk and had taken the train forever so it was that much more sweet. 3:30 or so and it was still there, dude in front of me getting the bistek tortas, I'll have to try that. The girlfriend got the Vegetariano which was lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, sour cream and cheese. They coulda thrown some radish in there or something...

Oh man, Ian, that last visit to Academy was like, my one alloted record store shopping trip for the year. Actually, I'm going to Jerry's in pittsburgh this weekend which I'm excited about. I didn't get much good disco during that last Academy visit last week, though some nice basics like Knock on Wood...was happier with my cheap rock buys (Roxy's Manifesto, Bryan Ferry's first solo, The Strangler's Gospel..., and TWO vintage old-school boston scene Propellor 7"s from the Post-Punk/DIY bin.
As far as Chinatown, I haven't really eaten there much so I have no favorites. As mentioned above I've been going to Spicy and Tasty in Flushing, which is seriously good.
Back in queens, finally hit Himalayan Yak...the tibet stuff was just ok, but the Nepali stuff was really good, this dry vegetable dish that was out of this world.

there have been a flurry of excellent (ie, not shitty momofuku garbage in a bowl) ramen shops opening in manhattan and brooklyn, what are your faves?
mine are setagaya, ippudo and rockmeisha (rokkumeisha).
― Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)
the only time i went by setagaya, the line was way too long. very excited about ichiran opening in gpoint.
not technically ramen, but i really want to try the cold noodles at saburi (japanese chinese place i think i mentioned to you).
― lauren, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)
I mentioned this on the fried chicken thread but Unidentified Flying Chickens in Jackson Heights was pretty cool
"hot" and "soy garlic" flavors both get the thumbs-up. we asked the waitress abt spicy mustard flavor and she dissuaded us ... I think that one and sweet & spicy just come out of a jar but the other two are original recipes. the skin is real thin & crispy and not greasy. I'm not the kinda guy who eats three huge drumsticks and six wings at a sitting but at this place I devoured me some chickenz.
― dmr, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)
One of my japanese coworkers has been repping Setagaya to me real hard lately. Really wanna go. He said try to go at night cuz the poor AC makes it almost unbearable at lucnhtime (in the current weather).

dan, what do you recommend at zabb city? i checked out their menu online and it looks like they have much less stuff than the zabb in queens. why no crispy pork and chinese broccoli, why!
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/417332
here's a chowhound thread that's sort of recent for reference. sounds like salads are the way to go, and it also sounds like it's nowhere near as good as zabb in qns.
― lauren, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)
(that thread is most valuable for a transliteration of how to say basic phrases in thai. keep reading to the end.)
― lauren, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)
zabb city was pretty great! we got everything thai spicy, and they have a scale of 3, 4, or 5 stars. we got everything 4 stars and it was definitely more than enough. i took four bites and immediately ordered sticky rice and a beer. the waitress asked if it was spicy enough and laughed at us and then brought us a pitcher of water. my cold is totally gone now though.
had the pork labb, duck salad, and zabb noodle. and fried banana with honey for desert.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 27 September 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)
those tacos across from heathers are no joke
― dmr, Thursday, 27 September 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)
also we tried to hit setagaya late-nite last night thinking it might not be crowded but they don't stay open past 11 on weekdays. shot down.
― dmr, Thursday, 27 September 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)
I'm not super into those tacos...Jeremy gets them ever time we do Dazzle Ships, but they're too messy! They start out good then they start adding the sauce, and adding, and adding!
My mind is boggling about the taco cart Siestema mentioned where they press fresh tortillas for your taco as you order it. That's pretty awesome.
The duck salad at both Zabbs was fantastic. Zabb Queens was a bit more refined, the apples and onions chopped finer and just more interesting, but Zabb City had bigger bits of apples and onion and added pineapple, which was pretty awesome. The duck itself was the same. The only other thing I've had at Zabb Queens was a shrimp dish someone on chowhound recommended, and something called Crispy rice and pork skin, which I miscontrued to mean crispy pork skin. The rice was crispy. The pork skin was not. It was the texture of skin, and I can't say I liked it very much.
I went to the new Arepas place in Astoria last night, pretty good and they were very nice. Got a free refill of their brown sugar lemonade, which was awesome.
― dan selzer, Thursday, 27 September 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

ZABB was the only restaurant in NYC whose waiter asked if we wanted our Pad Kaprow to be served authentic Thai style. We said yes and to our delight, the chicken came diced, the way they serve it in Thailand.
This was good to read. The first time I ordered Kaprow at Sri, I was suprised the chicken came pretty much ground up, where I was used to the american thai version which is basically like the chicken you'd find in a chinese take-out. I wondered if the was just Sri or if that was the real way to do it. I've ordered it once or twice since then and sometimes they even ask "ground?" because I guess people come expecting the "usual".
― dan selzer, Thursday, 27 September 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)
pork skin definitely needs to be crispy!
yeah, i've never been to setagaya or any of the fancy ramen places. i've been really in the mood for cold soba lately though...is there any place that specializes in that? do they hand-cut the noodles at any of these places? (this question may be better suited to the ask steve shasta thread)

― Jon Lewis, Thursday, 27 September 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)
zaragoza is great. they have plastic forks! what i do usually is eat a bit of the filling with said fork, then it's easier to wrap the taco up without spilling anything.
Zabb City was v v good, would eat again. My favorite was the duck salad; it had plenty of duck and it was crispy and had a really great flavor. The soup seemed kind of like normal soup, but we got it last and my taste buds were a little worn out from the intensity of the labb & duck salad. I think next time I might want to try one of the curries, even though they're not a specialty of the region. Or maybe one of the regular noodle dishes.

daer foodies,
i loathe st marks place, but should i go to kenku? is there a better alternative? need japanese snax soon
― sanskrit, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)
or kenka, whatever it's called http://www.yelp.com/biz/9xRIcn0jTyvWNH9aBO3oAA
― sanskrit, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)
ATTEN ZAYTOONS ON VBILT NOW OPEN STOP RUN DON'T WALK THERE STOP HALLELUJAH STOP.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)
kenka kind of rules. it is what i imagine tgifridays would be like in japan (pls note i have never been to japan). the beer is really cheap and you get to make your own cotton candy. foodies do not like the food but it's solid and not expensive.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)
at least one japaneses i know insists on eating there everytime he visits nyc
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
xxpost - yah I had zaytoons last thurs, it's pretty good
did I tell you guys, chavella's was fuckin with us the other day, they claimed they didn't deliver on our side of vanderbilt. and la taqueria won't deliver on our side of flatbush. SOUTH BROOKLYN NEGATIVE ZONE MEXICAN FOOD VORTEX
in the end we browbeat chavella's and they agreed to deliver
― dmr, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)
chavella's is basically the ONLY place that will deliver to me (wrong side of classon, so lonely)
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)
i'm thinking maybe that yakitori place also on st marx. but kenka might work. sounds fun.
it's been 4 years since i got food poisoned at smith street zaytoons. maybe it's time to forgive and forget.
― sanskrit, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)
yoko cho and yakitori taisho are totally solid and cheap, too.
― lauren, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)
Bell there's a possibly not that great but hey Japanese place on corner of Franklin and Dean now, they should deliver to you.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
yeah i have their menu. have you tried it? it looks very meh.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)
I had really great molé enchiladas on Roosevelt the one time I visited Dan's place in Queens.
I still think Village Yokosho is my fave yakitori/etc. place on/near St. Marks. I've tried a bunch of the new(er) joints but they didn't do it for me.
― Capitaine Jay Vee, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, it's pretty meh. I'm not gonna go out on a limb to defend that place fo shur except that it opened across the street from my prev apartment a few months after I moved out.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)
i actually haven't had the urge to get delivery since i've moved. having a much larger kitchen and no roomates to compete with for space makes cooking funnnnn.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)
who are all these new noisers
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

― Laurel, Thursday, 1 November 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)
it's very good (and delivers to franklin fuck yes!) but it possibly gave ian and i food poisoning last time we ate it.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)
xpost to morbs -- I kinda like Cronin & Phelan (fish & chips, Irish pub grub). 38th and Broadway. not a whole lot around there. Cup Diner is nearby (35st & 36av) but it kinda sucks imo.
wow really? me and shannon too. and check out sanskrit's comment upthread. gotta be more than a coincidence.
― dmr, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)
You guys, that is so depressing.
― Laurel, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)
sorry :(
if it makes you feel better I've had it four times but only got semi-ill once
― dmr, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)
try your luck
yeah, the other time i had it, i was fine. and i used to eat smith st zaytoons on a weekly basis when i lived over there and never had a problem.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)
i WILL eat it again. though i may avoid ground lamb stuff.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)
that is the same dish me & shannon split
― dmr, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

it was tasty :(
25% chance of spending a night in stomach hell... I LIKE THOSE ODDS
― Jon Lewis, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)
I've eaten smith st. zaytoons so much that one of the guys who used to work there bought me a drink at Boat once. That was weird. Anyway, it never made me sick, though when I got the chicken kebab platter for delivery it was sometimes undercooked. That's pretty gross. Their lentil soup is AWESOME, so thick you can eat it with a fork.
The Cup sucks, but Cafe Bar has some ok stuff.
― dan selzer, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)
yeah we went two weekends ago for schwarma brunch. really good. i've forgiven them for my smith st food poisoning of years ago. this place is much better than olive vine.
― sanskrit, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)
this place is much better than olive vine.
^^^ OTM x1000
― ian, Thursday, 1 November 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)
Yes. The Olive Vine on 6th ave or whereve is the WORST. The place on Dekalb is pretty good for some things, as is Beduin Tent on Atlantic, who make this insane Merguez.
― dan selzer, Thursday, 1 November 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

Kinara of Park Slope, mentioned here in years gone by, closing at month's end, I was told yesterday. Please holler for where I should get my Indian takeout off the F or Q in Brooklyn henceforth.

although we did go to Chicha in Bushwick and C.lo Cafe in east williamsburg last week and despite the former's beautiful design and more innovative/interesting menu, found C.lo Cafe shockingly delicious for what seems like a pretty humble under the radar place. Don't sleep.
Now can we talk about Queens please?
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 17 July 2018 23:41 (seven years ago)
when i move dere
― the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:07 (seven years ago)
i thought the food at chicha was comically bad but the drinks were very good. lotta instagram ass people in there for sure.
― adam, Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:40 (seven years ago)
Chimu is still open! Amazed.
― Yerac, Thursday, 19 July 2018 14:47 (seven years ago)
I liked my dish at Chicha by wife was underwhelmed. C.Lo was better!
― dan selzer, Thursday, 19 July 2018 16:34 (seven years ago)
I just re-read this entire thread. I am sad my only contribution was to bitch about accidentally getting mashed potatos on my pizza. A higher end sushi joint opened up kind of near my place. It's getting good reviews and I need to overcome my hesitations about sushi chefs who are not asian. https://www.gaijinny.com/
― Yerac, Thursday, 19 July 2018 16:44 (seven years ago)
I dunno about paying those prices in Astoria too. But I guess I pay a lot for good grilled octopus there.
