I live in Chicago.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 13 March 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

It's not too late to move, you've got a week.

Stence and Lauren: where are you flying to/from on that date??

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 March 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 March 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

i can probably fill the void of stenc's absent charisma (Lauren's, of course not).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 13 March 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

nice to know i'm replaceable.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

so, who is planning to come? should i bother with this at all? i always like the idea of having parties, but my energy decreases exponentially as the date approaches.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

What, I'm totally coming! And I just talked to Jon last night, he's supposed to be + Laura, obv. Who can't make it besides Stence/Lauren?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

people who don't feel like coming to park slope on saint patrick's day, probably!

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

Is Pk Slope going to be especially busy? Is there a parade or something I am complete unaware of?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

i'd be there, but im having a kegger in joel's absence....

or...ummm...if i come can i wear headphones?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

can someone give her another yellow card plz?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

Shut up, JMZ. You still haven't told me whether you liked any of the mp3s I sent you.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 22:57 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't listened to the whole disc yet! I was listening to it this afternoon but then got distracted by Indierockappella. That Stars remix is pretty rad, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha - indierockappella

I would go to a steely dan party as well.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

indierockappella

Eww. Funny, but ewww.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

yo krupa, will these ladies be there?

gritty sanskrit (sanskrit), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

There's an ILM thread about Indierockappella that is predictably full of Ned saying he wants to strangle small children, etc., but I kinda love the ambition of it. You know it's just some musical-theatre dork locked in his bedroom singing into his computer. Also I didn't see the people hating on this also dissing Petra Haden's a capella version of Who's Next.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

those are the words i was looking for.
xpost

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Dokkaka better. Speaking of which...

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes, I like the Stars remix lots more than the album version. There's such great PIANO, for one thing.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

sanskrit: yes.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

indierockapella: stay on one pitch owcch

elmo, holy helper (allocryptic), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

Results 1 - 10 of about 79 for Dokkaka. (0.28 seconds)

Did you mean: Bukkake

elmo, holy helper (allocryptic), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

What kind of Steely Dan party is this?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

....the kind where you might want to take a pass on the mashed potatoes.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

And when you say "to take a pass on"...

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know that I like the Stars remix LOTS more. To me, it's a really surprisingly inventive take on the original, but I have a major soft spot for that lush Lush sound.

That first Sufjan song has pitch problems, but some of the other songs are better. I think my favorite is the Arcade Fire one.

The Steely Dan song on the Dokaka site are okay but don't have as much character as Indierockapella. Plus, wtf is up with the vocals? I'm guessing he doesn't speak English? Which is fine, but he also makes no attempt to mimic Donald Fagen's timbre at all.

i'm flying back to the us bcz i've had my fill of being an expat.

USA! USA! USA!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

the Pk Slope St. Pat's parade isn't usu until Sunday noon. So I'll be home hiding under the covers on Friday night unless Ian goes thru with this and tells me where he lives.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

dude, we have been over this, i live like a block away from you!
and i probably will "go through with this."

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

That first Sufjan song has pitch problems, but some of the other songs are better. I think my favorite is the Arcade Fire one.
Surely this is not in reference to my mix? At least one of us is confused.

LAUREN, FOR REALZ?!? What excellent news! Are you going to resettle in our fair city??

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

yes! and yes. hopefully sometime in april.

Surely this is not in reference to my mix? At least one of us is confused.

Separate paragraphs for separate topics. I was still talking about Indierockappella. Best song on your mix is maybe "Nervous Wreck" by Call and Response!

Thinking of bringing full-on nacho makings. Will be sure to grab veg-friendly beans but for cheese/sour cream subsitutes, any vegans are on their own.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Best song on your mix is maybe "Nervous Wreck" by Call and Response!

Sorry, kiddo. I did warn you that I occasionally have the musical taste of a 35-yr old ex-punk socer player, because in my mind that's like the least affecting song out of all 30+.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

35-yr old ex-punk socer player

Wait. You're....not?

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

That song is so good, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

You may be confusing me with my ex-ex-ex, previously of s1n1ster and these boards, currently residing in Nashville, USA. (XP to Jib)

Jay, do you want more CAR? I have more.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

Sure. Anyway, I like other songs on the mix, too. I want to ask you what you mean by "affecting," but I'm afraid we would argue.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, to me Call & Reponse is something to put on while I do something else. It doesn't make me feel anything or I don't feel anything FOR it. Or something.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

Well, for me it was like I was listening to the mix yesterday morning on the train on the way to work, while reading, and while some songs were easy to tune out (which is not a comment on their quality, understand), that one totally called attention to itself, and I was like, "whaaaaaat's THIS now?"

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

I used to work with one of the Call & Responsers. Now one of their ex-husbands (who I also used to work with) is in a SHIT-HOT indie band of the mo-mo.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

You should start a thread of blind items, Steve Shasta.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

Just out of curiousity, Jay, did you know any of the songs?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

Does it bother you jaymc? Are you paused above your keyboard, slack-jawed, just waiting to fill in your spreadsheet with some vital entry...? ;-D

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost) I have "Falling and Laughing" by Orange Juice on a mix someone made me of early 80s Scottish bands, but it'd be a stretch to say I "knew" it, since I hardly ever listen to that mix. Otherwise it was all new!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

No, not really bothered all that much, Steve Musto -- I mean Shasta.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ian, I just watched the first DVD of Undeclared last night. It is exactly what I expected: a show with the same tone and high level of quality as Freaks and Geeks, but set in college.

Laurel, I am unfortunately sick as Jon has given me his plague. I had planned to go to Ian's, but if he is anti-people/fun I guess that is off. Let me see how I feel later, maybe we can still do something...
