crazy fucking landlady's son's acid-damaged funky backwoods psych

okay so one day i'm sitting parked outside of the house i rent a room in, smoking a cigarette, listening to ray barretto and waiting for the rain let up a bit before going inside. i look over and my landlady's 35 year old son is standing outside doing air guitar movements to ray baetto. He starts banging on the window so I roll it down. "HEY" he says "YOU LIKE FUNKY MUSIC??". He sort of looks like a cross between gandalf and a hobbit. He's got shoulder-length graying hair, thick black plastic-framed glasses, unshaven, crazy bloodshot eyes. He's wearing a multicolored handmade yarn sweater, grey sweatpants, a stocking cap, tiedye rainbow socks and tevas. i'm like "yeah, 1iam, i sorta do" and he goes "YOU GOTTA COME IN AND LISTEN TO THIS".

he leads me in through the backyard (i usually come in through the side yard), past the duck enclosure and goat barn and horse stable, we turn at the dog cages and enter into a little hut. "NOW YOU KNOW WHERE THE LITTLE HERMIT MOLE LIVES, HUH?!?" he says. we're in a hut, half of which is taken up by the bed. The ceiling clearance is seriously only like six feet high. He starts telling me this crazy story. About 15 years ago he graduated from redlands college and immediately decided to drop out of society and self-teach himself buddhism and asian languages (he has a master's degree in religious studies from a university in bangkok so i guess it worked?) and so he moved to a cabin somewhere in the woods around humboldt county.

I guess he didn't really have a whole lot to do out there, but he tells me he found a beat-up acoustic guitar in the attic, and there was a piano and an abandoned boombox in the livingroom, so he started fucking around with music. I don't want to make any assumptions but I get the sense he might have been fucking around with drugs. So we sit down in front of his computer, and he tells me that since he came down with "an uncurable cardiovascular condition" he's been living at his mom's in the converted goat shed out back and going through his old belongings that he left at home before he moved to thailand in the late 90s.

He tells me he found a big box of cassette tapes he recorded over a ten year period, and he's been loading them into some windows 95 era sound manipulation software (the rest of the room is taken up by his pentium 133 mhz setup). He's got "AT LEAST TWENTY ALBUMS WORTH, DUDE ... ALL MY HITS ... "SPRITUAL WARFARE" ... "SOUL SAILING" ... "TURTLE N4MED STUART" ... "MEAN MISTA MUGWUMP"... ETC ETC" ... he tells me he's grown up with arabic music since his mom converted to islam in the 60s, that she was once the reigning american competitive bellydancer, so he grew up with all of this mad arabic music around the house and he instinctively fused it with his "COLLECTION OF 3000 PSYCH AND PROG RECORDS, DUDE"

anyway he plays me a bunch of his songs that he's salvaged off tape ... mind you, he's been converting these to wav and cleaning them up, because they were recorded onto the internal microphone of a $50 1980s boombox ... and they STILL sound pretty damaged ... but i am STUNNED ... i mean, i can't tell if this guy is the next sun city girls or what ...

alright about a week ago, he came up to my room and dropped off a CD of his music - some of it is recent beat-oriented experiments, but i think it will be pretty easy to figure out which tracks are the original article and which are his recent stuff ...

would you guys be willing to listen and tell me if i should refer him to aquarius records and other music for distribution or what?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

gygax, i didn't like half moon bay so i hoofed it over the hill to palo alto / menlo park. it's still pretty crunchy around here, but upscale crunchy.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

i thought half moon bay was gonna be small-town santa cruz but it turned out to be this sort of weird combination of tourist trap and rural ghetto.

i am re-upping this right now BTW.

trees (treesessplode), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

OK he dropped by yesterday.

He was wearing a pinstriped navy suit, pinstriped white dress shirt, and navy tie w/ white "dobby" embroidery on it. Also he was wearing a multicolored rainbow fez.

He gave me vols 2 and 4. Apparently the 1st disc he gave me is called "The Basic E1ements", while disc 4 is called "Moroccan Cru1se". He described the 1st disc as "all the pop shit" (that's the album you have), while volume 4 is "the really out-there middle eastern jazz jams" and volume 2 (whose title escapes me right now) is the "smoothed out latin version". He didn't have much to say about volume 3 except it's "pretty crazy, man".

Also he told me he's worked on some "whacked out synthesizer drone experiments, really ambient weirdo shit".

Then, later, when I went out to my car, he'd put a sort of hand-copied pamphlet on my windshield. It's a hand-illustrated story called "Being one d4y in the l1fe of an except1ona11y we11-mannered dra5on". do you old-school guys remember that little doodle they used to post on ILE of the crowned dragon dancing with the thick-eyebrowed glasses midget? well, that's sort-of what the illustrations look like. the tone of the writing reminds me of daevid allen's stories for the PHP trilogy.

also, in the front of it i found volume 3, "emera1d triang1e".

so he's settled on an 11-disc set, in some sort of embossed leather sleeve. i've got the 1st copy reserved.

i had my doubts after hearing volume 1, but volume 4 is FUCKING INSANE. i listened through it START TO FINISH, without getting up and changing it. volume 1 has it's highs and lows. some of it is rad (particularly the 2nd half), some is cool but grating, some is just unlistenable.

but volume 4 ... holy shit man, volume 4 is THE REAL SHIT.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

i won't be getting to this tonight, but sometime within the next couple of days. i'll be starting with volume 4. if that's o.k., or should i start from the beginning?

so anyway, when i go to feed this into itunes and edit the tags, should the artist be crazy fucking landlady's son? also, since i keep my mp3s categorized by genre now, this should fall under obscuro, shouldn't it? oh, and do the songs have names at all? and i think i've gathered that this is a four-part set...?

oh, and you're totally like this dude's manager now or something.

i can re-up 1-4 if you want any of those ...

I managed to snag 1-4 when you re-upped them. I just went back to them earlier in the week and found so much to like that I wanted even more. Scary to think they're just 1/3 of the planned opus.

Did you ever share them with the Aquarius guys or anyone else? I think they definitely have a certain something that could find an audience.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

I've only heard her track off Golden Apples of the Sun

dmr, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

i'll have some free time in about a month, i'll drop by the bickfords and grab a photo and liam's address so that interested parties can get in touch with him.

though i actually feel kinda bad that i spread this thing all over the internet without telling him.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

I wouldn't feel bad about the spreading the music part, just slightly nervous about the calling him fucking crazy part
